Friday Favorites

Happy 3 Day Weekend Friday!
I’m waking up this morning in my very favorite city…Boston :).  Really and truly, that makes this Friday a favorite for me.

Today, I’m linking up with NarciAndrea and Erika and sharing a few favorites with you.

I hope you have big plans this weekend that include friends, family, food and a moment to remember those men and women that serve or have served in our armed forces.  God bless these brave soldiers and their precious families that support them from home.

UPDATED: Hey look what I just found 40% off

I bought both of these shoes this spring.  To see the heels, click here and the wedges, click here (available in other colors too!).  I ordered true to size with both :).

Also, don’t forget, Wednesday is What’s Up Wednesday!  Don’t forget to answer the questions and link up…

Memorial Day always brings back memories for me.  On Memorial Day 2007, I found out I was pregnant.  After a year of fertility treatments and an IUI, I took a test that morning and found out we were (finally!) having a baby.  It was a great day :).
Unfortunately, on June 25, I miscarried.
Fast forward to Memorial Day 2009…
…I had a precious 8 month old baby and unbeknownst to me at this time…but I was also pregnant with Smith :).  I’m sharing my infertility story over at The Baby Wait today.  I know there are many, many, many of you who are trying to get pregnant right now and my heart truly breaks for this season in your life.  I’m praying for you and your journey today.

And speaking of me becoming a mama…God has truly shown me that you don’t have to birth a baby to be its mother.  Sweet little Ashby is no less mine than Kensington or Smith.  When Dawn reached out and asked if I would share this with you guys…
…I didn’t hesitate one bit.  She is making custom address stamps and the proceeds go to her family’s adoption from China.  Another child is being adopted into a family…my heart gets full just thinking about that.  I’m sure you could use a custom stamp for your mail (think of the Christmas cards!).  Support Dawn and her family today!

One of my favorite things to pin are quotes…some are silly, some are serious…but they’re always meaningful to me.  I thought this one was very fitting for those of you struggling with fertility, adoption or really, anything in life…
You can see all of my pinned quotes here…

If you still don’t know what you’re making this Memorial Day weekend, you can check out my suggested menu here.

And you can also check out my Simple Summer Grilling here

And because it’s been raining for two months straight here…I’m having to create my own sunshine.  I found this cute bracelet and thought it was a nice little happy touch on even the rainiest days (and won’t it look cute when it’s actually sunny outside?!?!).

See…it’s just one bracelet…
…you have to make your own sunshine even on gloomy days :).

I ordered it on May 13 and it’s already sold out.  I blame the Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale.  If it comes back in stock, I’ll let you know.  I love a fun bracelet!

Here are a few more similar ones…

Stretch Bracelet (in 4 colors)// Turquoise Bracelet// Beaded Bracelet

And dinner tonight…

…a Strawberry Jam & Goat Cheese Turkey Burger.  It will rock your world.

I’m taking Monday off to be with my family, so from Boston to you, Happy Memorial Day!

xoxo

Oh I am definitely making that burger for dinner soon! My husband will 1000% look at me like I'm crazy when I serve that to him though. Is it okay to require blindfolds at the dinner table?

Though I appreciate you calling attention to Memorial Day, it is not a day for everyone that has served or is serving, that is Veterans Day. Memorial Day is to honor service members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, dying while serving their country. As a Air Force wife I take this seriously. It is a somber day for us, remembering and honoring our friends and peers that have passed while in the line of duty. They deserve that recognition, those that are still here are lucky enough not to.

Thx for pointing this out Erica. As a Marine Corps wife I too take this seriously. It's good to educate those that aren't clear on this. We've lost many friends in combat and home (flying mishaps), Memorial Day is a day to pay tribute to them. But please thank our veterans on Veterans Day! =)

I just popped over to the infertility post. What condition did the doctor say you had that he thought you'd never be able to get pregnant? For some reason, I didn't know you had infertility issues.

    • Mix and Match Mama May 22, 2015 at 3:14 pm

My body stopped producing the right amounts of estrogen and progesteron.

Hi Shay! If you don't mind me asking- What part of Texas do you live in? Is it directly in McKinney? We're looking for a house in Texas and so far we like Allen,Fairview and McKinney! Thank you so much! I love your sweet family! Have an amazing trip! 🙂

    • Mix and Match Mama May 22, 2015 at 7:26 pm

Thank you so much! We found a school that we just love in McKinney so McKinney was our number one option but my hubby got a new job which is about 45 minutes away! Thanks again! 🙂

My favorite restaurant ever is in Boston! It's in the north end and it's called La Familia Gigorios! I'm not sure how to spell it but they have THE BEST Italian food EVER! I get tortellini with chicken broccoli and Alfredo sauce!another great place in the north end is called Mikes Pastry! The best canolis! Let me know if you end up going there! I strongly recommend them! Also a great place is Sweet Caroline's right by Fenway! Xoxo have a great trip! 🙂

Have a great, long weekend with your family!

  • Anonymous May 23, 2015 at 12:43 pm

Why is Andrew's family rarely mentioned? Doesn't he have siblings? Strange that you see them so seldomly. I know they live far, but it's not like you guys don't have the means to visit them or the space to have them stay with you. You've never posted a pic with them and Ashby. I'm assuming there has been a falling out of some sort. Only logical explanation.

    • Mix and Match Mama May 23, 2015 at 5:12 pm

I believe I've mentioned this before, but a few years ago, Andrew's brother and his wife decided to remove themselves and their kiddos from all forms of social media. Out of respect for them, we don't post our time together. We have a wonderful relationship with Andrew's sweet family and wish they all lived closer. His family met Ashby in March and since then, Smith and Andrew have been up to visit (I couldn't take K because she was in school, so we had to stay home). Those times together are just private.

    • Anonymous May 25, 2015 at 5:10 pm

Do Andrew's parents object to being put on the blog? I understand his brother's reasoning but what about his parents?

    • Mix and Match Mama May 25, 2015 at 6:08 pm

You know, I always try to be respectful of other people on my social media. Sometimes, the moment is private and doesn't need to be publicized. They're on here when it's right for them and we're private when that's appropriate too. Just because I blog doesn't mean everyone in the family has to always be a part of it. I would never want to put people in that position unless they're always okay with it. Plus, sometimes, we get together and it's all about private time with the family and it's okay not to document it online. This happens with both sides of our families (and with friends too!). I document a lot on here but most certainly not everything and everyone.

    • Anonymous May 25, 2015 at 8:18 pm

You do seem to blog about your family and document events much more than Andrews side of the family

    • Mix and Match Mama May 25, 2015 at 9:35 pm

By default, we see them a lot more. My parents live an hour away and Andrew's live six hours away. That's just a matter of geography. Thank goodness for Facetime ;). 2015 has really made distance a lot easier, right?

  • The Nelson Happenings May 23, 2015 at 12:35 pm

I love your foodie blog too ! So glad I stopped by and read up on your latest posts.

  • Anonymous May 23, 2015 at 5:46 pm

Hi Shay! I'm 18 years old and I have been reading your blog since December last year and I just wanted to tell you that I learned/am learning so much from you! Your family inspires me and your faith brings me joy. Looking at your blog makes me happy and makes me hope that someday God blesses me with a family of my own! Most times life gets me down but when I look at your blog I am reminded of the possibilities God has in store for me, and in the end, your blog is the kind of positivity the internet needs. Your family is so precious and your daughter Ashby is beautiful. At a young age, you helped me realize the beauty of mothering a child from another woman, and I am praying that someday God gifts me with that kind of responsibility and gift. Stay amazing! Can't wait to learn more from you! God bless!

I have the bracelet and love it! Looks more expensive than it was. Happy weekend!
