Boston 2017

Well, today is the last day of school.  I have REALLY mixed emotions about this.  I am thrilled that my kiddos will be home all summer with me…but I’m sad because I felt like this year just flew by.  I don’t know…I wish they would stay little forever, but it feels like time is actually speeding up.  First and second grades this year were great!  My kids loved their teachers, they made new friends, they enjoyed going to school and I know that might not always be the case, so I try not to take it for granted.  I’m just a ball of emotions.  It’s bittersweet, you know?  I was tucking Kensington into bed last night and it was like “wow”, she is a big kid now.  It just happened fast.  Okay…on to today’s post…

Last Thursday, I made my annual trip to Boston to watch the Red Sox play!

I had my book and was ready to go!  (And pssssst: in case you missed my book review, you can read it HERE.)

My flight landed at 1:24 AM and instead of taking a cab to the hotel, look who was there to pick me up?!  Ah!  I just love my dad!  My parents had been there the day before to see another Sox game (I stayed home one extra day so that I didn’t miss Britt’s arrival!).

We set out to enjoy Boston the next morning and it was cold and raining, but that did not dampen our spirits!

It’s always so special to hang out with my parents 🙂 .

(And pssssst: you can find my scarf HERE.)

We stopped for lunch at Joe’s American Grill on Newbury Street and had the PERFECT table!  It kept us dry, but we felt like we were outside (it was enclosed).

Blackened fish sandwich.  Yes, ma’am!

It stopped raining, and we we explored a bit more before our game that night.

Love my mama.

And then…it was time for this…

Our game at Fenway Park!!

My happy place.

Lookin’ at our little piece of Fenway.

And then we watched the Sox beat the Mariners 🙂 .  It was a great day!

We woke up the next morning and were back at the airport before 6:00 AM.  It was a short trip, but just what I needed!

I just love me some Boston!

  • Toni :0) June 1, 2017 at 4:44 am

Your mom looks like she could be your sister she looks so young! Major League Baseball games are always a blast.

  • Samantha June 1, 2017 at 4:48 am

I just love how close you are to your parents. I pray my kids still want to hangout with me when they are adults. I would love to read a post on how your family cultivated such a strong bond. So special!

    • KP June 1, 2017 at 12:48 pm

I agree, would love to hear that as well!

  • Niki June 1, 2017 at 5:23 am

Love and what a fun trip with your parents! That is awesome and hope to have that with my kiddos in their adult years.

On the last day of school, always bittersweet for a mama’s heart, but so LOVE having them home (I’m the one hoping for snow days so they can stay home, ha). Elementary flew by, and today my oldest does his last walk down the hall as a 5th grader…I already know this mom will need some Kleenex.

  • Bailey June 1, 2017 at 5:24 am

The picture of you and your mom standing by The Sevens & Ninos is EXACTLY where I pictured BIB’s to be. 🙂

  • Shay June 1, 2017 at 5:24 am

I was in Boston last week also. What is your favorite hotel to stay at near Fenway? Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 1, 2017 at 5:38 am

I actually stay near Beacon Hill and use the subway system!

    • WhittyWife June 1, 2017 at 2:13 pm

Jumping in here… I live in Maine and have spent a lot of time in Boston. I adore the Marriot Custom House – it’s the building with the clock tower. It’s also in a great location, right by the aquarium and near the North End (the Italian section of the city). 🙂

  • Alexis deZayas June 1, 2017 at 6:05 am

You make me want to go back to Boston! Quick question – where are your mom’s boots from? They are awesome. Maybe a Friday Favourites with your mom???

    • Mix and Match Mama June 1, 2017 at 6:29 am

I asked her the same question! She said she bought them in Belgium :).

  • Leslie Z. June 1, 2017 at 6:15 am

  • Dianna June 1, 2017 at 7:17 am

Love to see the Loft sweater still in your cold weather preferences! I may have gotten both colors (by your recommendation) on really good sales since I live in Florida and no one wants to buy sweaters but me 😉

  • Caroline June 1, 2017 at 7:24 am

Love this so much! I’ve been on many trips with my parents as an adult (leaving hubby and kids at home) and felt like I was the only one! Love seeing this! Thanks for sharing! I think I need to make it a bucket list item to hear “my song” played at Fenway!

  • Kristen June 1, 2017 at 7:26 am

You have such a gorgeous mama!

  • Jenna June 1, 2017 at 7:41 am

As a Mariner fan, that was a bad game 🙂 What a fun trip! It looks like you guys had a great time and it is always fun! It is always extra fun when your team wins and you are at the games.

I think Kensington looks like your mama.

  • Rebecca Brittain June 1, 2017 at 8:10 am

I was just there this past weekend too! Beautiful city and pics of your sweet parents. I think I stopped at most of the same places except for the Red Sox game. =)))

  • Kelly June 1, 2017 at 8:19 am

Such sweet times with your parents, you are blessed:) We are planning a Boston trip (not for baseball, more for homeschool/historical reasons:) next year. Do you have suggestions on where to stay? Thanks so much, Shay and enjoy your last day of school/first day of summer!

I love the Beacon Hill area!!

  • Kay June 1, 2017 at 8:37 am

Looked like such a fun trip, a special time having your parents all to yourself. Is your LV bag the Bloomsbury? I think I might need it.

  • Heather June 1, 2017 at 8:42 am

What kind of boots is your mom wearing? They are very cute for a rainy day!

  • Jessica June 1, 2017 at 8:44 am

I am going to be the crazy lady that asks you what book light you have 🙂 my little guy just doesn’t seem to provide me with enough light! I hope this makes you smile though as you realize you really do get asked it ALL!

  • Amanda @ Cupcake N Dreams June 1, 2017 at 8:45 am

Nothing like Boston and Boston sports! I’m with you on loving New England? Having a bond with your parents like that is so special isn’t it?!

  • Corinne Wright June 1, 2017 at 9:05 am

I love the relationship you have with your parents, especially your Dad. My Dad is a bit of a dud… just not a very nice guy and we are not close at all. I hope you know how lucky you are!

My dad brainwashed me when I was young 😉 .

  • Keisha M Dawson June 1, 2017 at 11:53 am

Your trips to Boston have inspired me. My hubby and I are headed there in the fall, and I can’t wait! I noticed your book light in the first picture, and my kiddos have both asked for one recently for their bedtime reading. Is there one in particular you recommend? Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 1, 2017 at 12:29 pm

I buy them off of Amazon! I’m obsessed with them!!

  • Kim June 1, 2017 at 12:01 pm

Out of all the things you post this trip is always one of my favorites. It just feels so special! Maybe it’s because I grew up without my Dad? Idk. I just think it’s the cutest thing that you do this!! Family time is the BEST time!

  • Kim in RI June 1, 2017 at 12:26 pm

Love Boston! Next time you are in town I would so love to meet you in person!!!

  • Heather June 1, 2017 at 12:57 pm

Is your Dad from Boston/ New England? Just curious where the love for the Red Sox came from! And yes! Everyone must take a Duck your, so much fun and awesome way to see the city and learn some of the history!

Your mom looks so youthful and beautiful! I’m close to her age and would love to hear her “secret” to staying in shape and aging so gracefully! What a special time the three of you had in this special short getaway! Happy Summer!

  • Marta June 2, 2017 at 2:04 pm

You have such a close relationship with your dad. I love to see that! Mine passed away last year. Enjoy these wonderful times. Maybe one day you can share a pic of both your parents young, they are such a cute couple.

  • bean99 June 2, 2017 at 3:22 pm

We had 2 days in Boston last fall at the end of a cruise and loved it! One of our favorites was the Fenway Park tour. It was during the playoffs last year so didn’t get to see a game. We enjoyed following the Freedom Trail and had to have dinner at an Italian restaurant in the North end (ours was Limoncello which was wonderful). We stayed in a nice hotel in Back Bay which was really convenient to the Boston Common and the subway which was much easier than in NYC and faster and a lot cheaper than taxis, especially to the airport.

  • Cheryl June 4, 2017 at 9:32 am

Please tell me how you manage to keep your hair looking good in the humid, rainy weather. I’ve tried everything to get that lift at the roots but nothing works. Do you use a certain product? How do you keep it from going flat?

    • Mix and Match Mama June 5, 2017 at 5:04 am

Ha! You might not be so impressed in person!! I use all of the products in my beachy hair post!!

  • kim June 4, 2017 at 11:52 am

I love your jacket! Please share the details. Thx!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 5, 2017 at 5:02 am

It’s a North Face that I bought at Nordstrom about 2.5 years ago. Love that one!

  • Lori Drake June 5, 2017 at 8:29 pm

My family is considering a trip to Boston this summer. Do you have a recommendation of a good centrally located place to stay? We are a family of 5. Want something nice, but not overly nice.

    • Mix and Match Mama June 6, 2017 at 5:08 am

We love to stay in Beacon Hill! That area of Boston makes walking and subway rides very easy!

  • Denise June 5, 2017 at 9:05 pm

I’m really curious as how a Texas family has such a love of Boston and especially the Sox? Please don’t misunderstand as I’m a native Bostonian and love my NE teams!

    • Mix and Match Mama June 6, 2017 at 5:07 am

My dad grew up a Sox fan and it has rubbed off on me :).

  • Jenny Jo June 8, 2017 at 1:04 pm

Ah Shay!!! I was so upset that you flew into Boston the day that I was leaving for my California vacation! I had my Cravings book in hand wishing for an autograph! Come back soon!!!
