It’s  What’s Up Wednesday !

Once a month, my friends Mel, Sheaffer and I host this link up where we share some random and fun stuff that’s up with us today.  If you blogged WUW too (even if you posted it last week!), make sure you link up at the bottom of the post!  Every month, we answer these questions…

wuwquestions-edit

…in our What’s Up Wednesday posts!

It’s been a big week around here!  The little two girls headed off to preschool and Pre-K yesterday and this mama celebrated with a Pumpkin Spice Latte 🙂 .

#amen

We’re having a great start to our (short) week.

Okay, here’s what’s up today…

1: WHAT WE’RE EATING THIS WEEK:

Meal Planning Monday

Things that are putting us back into the school mood.  My MEAL PLANNING MONDAY was up earlier this week and it includes five simple suppers, a yummy little fall dessert and even a breakfast recipe.  You can see it all HERE.

And then did you see this post yesterday…

All About Apples!

…come September, I want anything and everything apple, so I posted All About Apples yesterday!  From savory to sweet, I have every apple recipe you need this fall!  See it HERE.

2. WHAT I’M REMINISCING ABOUT:

One year ago, on September 8, the Shull five headed out to become the Shull SIX!! In some ways, it’s so hard to believe it’s almost been a year…but then in other ways, it feels like we’ve had Madeley FOREVER.  We’ve been thinking so much about that time period lately.  We received our travel approval so quickly and were out the door in about six days…it was crazy fast but so much FUN!

3: WHAT I’M LOVING:

These pajamas

They are sooooooo soft!  I loved my owl ones so much that I bought them in a second print…

I really love these!  They would make excellent Christmas gifts by the way.  I’ve washed and dried them so many times already and they hold up perfectly.  So comfy and cute!!

4: WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:

Everything back to school…

…new classes, new teachers, new extracurricular activities, new schedules, new routines, new, new, new…everything is new for back to school.

5: WHAT I’M DREADING:

Well, I was kind of dreading my kids going back to school last week, so now that that’s behind me, I guess I’m not dreading anything at the moment.

6: WHAT I’M WORKING ON:

Keeping my sanity this fall and holiday season.

I’m really trying to do less.  I have really trimmed my calendar this season so that I’m not overwhelmed/too busy/frazzled.  There were certain things that I just knew needed to be cut this fall and so, I cut them.  I’m sure there is more I can/should/will eliminate, but for now, I feel really good.  One thing I didn’t cut?  Helping people plan their vacations.

Look at this sweet couple!  They just came home from their honeymoon 🙂 .  How sweet are they?!  We loved working with them to plan it!

Plus…friends, NOW IS THE TIME TO BOOK YOUR SPRING BREAK VACATION!  Whoa!  We book a gazillion spring break trips this time of year because…come March or April, you’ll be so happy you already have plans!  Remember how much fun we had last year during spring break…

…Disney Cruise for the WIN over spring break!!   Best. Vacation. Ever.  You can look back at my recaps here: PART ONE, PART TWO, PART THREE, PART FOUR.  Yeah, there were four parts because it was so darn fun 😉 !

I just love talking to customers about traveling…that is a JOY in my day!  Right now, we are sending new clients departing after November 1st to Walt Disney World, Mexican all-inclusives and cruises.  If you want us to help you with your next vacation, email us at mixandmatchtravelagency@yahoo.com 🙂 .

7: WHAT I’M EXCITED ABOUT:

ALL THINGS FALL!

Ah!  This picture is from last October 1.  I just love all things fall, and we have lots to be excited about!  Oktoberfest, pumpkin patches, pumpkin carving, The State Fair of Texas and two little fall birthdays (Kensington and Madeley).  It’s going to be a great season!

8: WHAT I’M WATCHING/READING:

My August Book Review was up on Friday!!  I read five really good books last month…

August Book Reivew

…you can see it HERE.  You can see all of the books and read my reviews HERE.  This is such a great time of year to read!

After my kids watched Uncle Sean on the first episode of Worst Cooks in America…

…they asked if we could watch more cooking shows like that, so I turned on this…

…and we’ve been watching it every night since.  I’ve had so many of you tell me to watch this over the years, and I’m so glad because it’s PERFECT family TV!  All of my kids love it (and Andrew and I do too!).  It’s been a fun show to turn on in the evenings before they head to bed.

9: WHAT I’M LISTENING TO:

And I do this every year, but when the season starts to change, I start watching/listening to this on repeat while I’m at home doing work and such…

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!  I bet that I’ve watched it (or listened to it in the background) five times this week.  NO LIE!  The music in the background is my absolute favorite, and I just love the banter/dialogue between Meg and Billy.  It just plays on repeat in my office.  Love, love, love this movie.

10: WHAT I’M WEARING:

Well, it’s in the low 80s here right now, so I’m still wearing warmer weather clothes.  That being said, I have had the opportunity to sneak in some fall-ish things lately.  Like…

this top (it comes in 5 prints/colors) with my booties (in 3 colors) and favorite jeans.  I haven’t worn the scarf out of the house yet, but I wanted you to see how cute it is for fall!!  I bought the mustard color but it comes in five other colors too!  So soft and cute!  In fact, I threw it on with this top on Monday before I went to run errands to see how it looked with it and it was so cute…

…same jeans, same booties, same scarf and this top from Loft.  My basic uniform 🙂 .

And speaking of scarves…

this scarf from the Anniversary Sale is back in stock!  I will be wearing the heck out of this baby!!  And I’m wearing those booties in both pictures.  They are so comfortable!

And then this pic is from last year, but I noticed that the ruffle dress is back in stock in four colors.  I wore this dress a lot during fall and winter to church and whatnot. The little ruffle detail was just too cute!

11: WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND:

It’s my mama’s birthday!  We’re celebrating on Saturday!

12: WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT MONTH:

Um, did I mention that I love all of this fall stuff?  Because I do.

13: WHAT ELSE IS NEW:

I think that’s all for right now!  This time last year, we were gearing up to get Miss Madeley!  It’s hard to believe it’s almost been one year!

Bonus question this month: Your best lunch box ideas and tips:

Last year, I discovered Yumboxes thanks to my friend Andrea…and they’ve been making lunchtime more fun ever since!  So, I guess I have two tips: First, I really love these boxes because they encourage me to be a little more creative.  Instead of wasting a million baggies on little bits of things, I can just add them to the box.  I fill their boxes, pop them in their lunch boxes and off to school they go!

My second tip is that I try to prep and/or make as much as I can on Sunday afternoons so that during the week, I don’t have to make lunches.  This has shaved so much time from my already hectic afternoons.  After school, we just clean out their lunch box and pop in new stuff that is already waiting and ready.  I either pre-fill extra Yumboxes or I grab things that I’ve already prepped in baggies out of a big 9×13 casserole dish that I keep in our garage fridge.  (The casserole dish just corrals everything together during the week.) I have bags of chips, trail mix, grapes and such in there along with individual yogurts (with the spoons right next to them!).  I also have anything that’s larger that I’ve pre-made but didn’t fit in their boxes (or they opted out of a Yumbox that day) like wraps and sandwiches.  My kids help me on Sundays and are honestly so proud during the week to run out there and grab their stuff for the following day.  Sunday prepping has totally changed our afternoons.  Isn’t that weird?  Something so simple made such a big difference!  I cannot wait to read your tips too!

Okay!  That’s What’s Up Wednesday today! If you blogged too, make sure you link up below.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

I’m with you on cutting plans this season. I find my happiest days are simple ones surrounded by my family (and pumpkins, of course, haha). Happy early bday to your mama!!!

I cannot believe you’re about to celebrate one year with Madeley. It feels like she’s been a part of the group forever! ❤️❤️❤️

  • Bethany September 6, 2017 at 5:35 am

YAY for all the scarves and ridiculous pumpkin things!

  • Nicole September 6, 2017 at 6:06 am

With your littles in school now, I would love to hear your weekly routine/schedule. I always go back to your “daily routine” post. Routines make things go so much smoother and you’re so organized and intentional with your time. 🙂

  • Lizzie @ This Happy Life September 6, 2017 at 6:19 am

We love our Bentgo box which is very similar to Yumbox! Lifesaver!! Loving your mustard scarf!

  • jamie September 6, 2017 at 6:22 am

currently it is 45 degrees with a high of 67 in the ann arbor area. call me crazy but our windows are open wide! it’s warm enough during the day to keep them open and so fallish to know in the morning it’ll be chilly! i have so many favorites when it comes to reading your blog. one of my top favorites? your music. i just went to my amazon music and added the {when harry met sally} soundtrack. i almost always have music playing 24/7. i’ve started over the past few months to play my favorite movies/tv series in the background of my working/cleaning life. at first i thought it was kind of weird but it is super calming and cozy. thank you for inspiring!

I’ve definitely heard great things about Yumboxes but we are huge Bentgo Box fans in our house. Love them! Okay, now I’m off to figure out our spring travel plans. Yikes – I was just getting into this fall thing and now I’m thinking spring! 😉

Hahaha!! That girl at the beginning with the “when you realize you don’t need that negativity”.. that is PERFECT. hahaha!! Such a special time of year- as y’all became the “SIX” instead of the “FIVE”. SO wonderful!!! Happy beginnings of fall! 🙂

Love the yum boxes too! Even my “big” 7th grader loves to use it! My tip….Kensington is almost at the perfect age to learn this…..let her pick out her lunch items. Give rules: 2-3 healthynitems, 1-fun non-healthy, a protein or two etc…..teach her the first trip and then let her go pick out her stuff! I let Jack take a basket around while I did the big grocery shopping at about fourth/fifth grade. That avoids any whining on what you send because they pick most of it out! Would be a great weekly “girl” night with Kensington!

Watching Sean on Worst Cooks is hilarious!

Until he burned bacon, then I was sad. Burning bacon is sinful.

  • Amanda September 6, 2017 at 8:14 am

Those pyjamas look seriously comfortable!! Sad that Nordstroms is sooo badly priced in Canada. Might have to do some over the border shopping and get those!
Can’t wait for your 1 year Madeley update!

Loved everything you shared. I talked about fall as well (because who isn’t?!) in my WUW post: https://haleysulka.wixsite.com/coffeetalk/single-post/2017/09/06/Whats-Up-Wednesday

  • Leslie September 6, 2017 at 8:43 am

What lunch boxes do you use? Do you have something the yum box fits into? Or just the yum box in the book Bag? We’ve always loved the PBK lunch boxes and so many things just don’t fit!

    • Mix and Match Mama September 6, 2017 at 11:48 am

I get my kids’ Yumboxes to fit inside their PB lunchboxes!

  • Amy D. September 6, 2017 at 8:49 am

Yay for WUW! I hope your mom has a great birthday. Have fun celebrating!

  • Ella September 6, 2017 at 9:05 am

How do you cut things out of your fall schedule?
The only thing I could cut out is sleeping or my social life which won’t have good results.

    • Mix and Match Mama September 6, 2017 at 11:47 am

Ha! I’ve cut out certain work commitments: no speaking engagements this school year (I think I had 18 last year), I’ve decided not to write any cookbooks this school year and things like that. I also changed out how I’m volunteering at my kids’ schools. I’m still volunteering, but in different ways. On top of that, I’ve just been saying no to somethings (a girls night here, a gym workout there) and trying to keep my head above water.

  • Betsy September 6, 2017 at 9:15 am

The best tip a fellow mom (with kids older than mine) told me was young kids can pack their own lunches. Until then I was doing all the planning, packing and stressing. So when the light bulb went off, I talked with my daughter (2nd grader at the time) and told her she was going to get to help me pack her own lunch. She was so excited to take ownership and now my youngest, a kindergartner, loves to pack her own lunch, as well. My husband or I supervise and make sure there is enough food and that it’s balanced, but they do the work. And it has been a great help!

So if a mom reading these comments needs to have the same light bulb moment, here it is! It was good advice from my friend. It also reminded me our kids are capable of being helpers when we moms unintentionally take over.

  • Kayla B September 6, 2017 at 9:23 am

I LOVE this post. It’s filled with so many of my very favorite things: travel, fall, school, adoption… and Great British Bake Off!! SO glad you are watching. It has become my “listening in the background” show because I love the British banter and the lovely music. There is lots to be praying for in the world, but I really appreciate your blog because it celebrates life and happiness, and I think we need more of that!

  • Angela Ellingson September 6, 2017 at 9:30 am

So much goodness! Love fall, too! Love your recommendations. You are a joy, Shay!

  • Natausha Manis September 6, 2017 at 10:19 am

Shay, We would love to see a picture of that 9×13 dish with all your pre-made lunchbox items! I am a crazy lady who packs and MAKES lunch every morning!! I know…I’m nuts! I want to be more prepared, but I haven’t just bit the bullet and done it yet! Also, so happy for Madeley’s 1 year adoption day and Happy birthday to your momma!! I HEART all the Fall things too! This is my favorite time of the year. Fall leads to my favorite holiday too!! CHRISTMAS!! I’m already trying to think of things to buy my 4 babies for Christmas this year! I will have have an 8 year old, two 3 year olds and a 7 month old by then!

Have you ever made your own granola? I’m trying to find a good recipie, but always have the most luck with yours. I have had someone tell me ones with oats, syrup, almond slices, chocolate, etc is good but I have no idea how much ingredients to add! Let me know if you have a good one or would discover your own 🙂

  • Chelsea September 7, 2017 at 10:04 pm

Hi Shay! Random question but do you have a certain Nespresso coffee flavor that you love? Do you use the 8oz coffee pods or the small espresso ones and do you heat up any creamers in the frother? I just got my first Nespresso and milk frother and trying to find the best combo!

    • Mix and Match Mama September 8, 2017 at 5:33 am

I like the caramel one the best and I use the Vertuoline with those pods.

  • Dianna September 15, 2017 at 10:03 am

I feel like prepping all of that on Sunday things would be soggy by Friday. Do your kids seem to notice? Is there anything you don’t put in the fridge because of that?

    • Mix and Match Mama September 15, 2017 at 10:59 am

I don’t pack anything that gets soggy. If I’m making wraps, I leave off a condiment (meat and cheese) and the rest is fine in the fridge (yogurt, bags of chips, bags of fruit, veggies, hummus, trail mix, etc).
