Friday Favorites

It’s Friday…and I have the blues.

It happens every other year about this time…I start to think to myself, WHAT AM I GOING TO WATCH WHEN THE OLYMPICS ARE OVER?!

I mean…it’s consumed me for weeks and now, it’s about to be over.  Right?!  Does this mean I have to go back to watching regular TV?  How boring is that?!  I’m going to miss you Winter Games.

This is going to be a wet and yucky weekend here in North Texas.  We don’t have much planned but staying inside and keeping dry.  Here’s hoping you have a sunny weekend wherever you are!

Just like every Friday, I’m linking up with three of my besties, AndreaErika and Narci today and sharing my favorite things from this week.  Buckle up, today is a very random and fun assortment of things!!

I’m starting off with this…

…did you see my AT HOME WORKOUT post this week?!  You should read it just for the comments!!!  You girls gave me so many new suggestions for apps, types of workouts, different studios to try (hello all of you Orangetheory fans out there!)…it was nuts!  Now, based on all of this new info I received, I should be in amazing shape in no time flat 😉 .  Read about it HERE.

All of you mamas of kids with braces out there, this one is for you…

…Kensington has had her braces now for about six months, and bless her heart…but she was having the hardest time brushing around them and getting everything.  The dentist told us to buy this HD toothpaste and it has been AMAZING!  Kensington uses the mint version which is green, so that when she’s done brushing her teeth, anything that she didn’t get is then green in her mouth and she can easily see the spots where she missed and go back and get them.  This stuff has seriously been a lifesaver for us.

Okay, every year at this time, I start to dream about summer and then I notice how pasty I look and think “I need to self tan”.  Ha!  Anyone else???  Even though the high today is like 40, I am ready to get my self tan on.  I’ve told you about the Dr. Dennis Gross tanning wipes for YEARS and they’re my absolute favorite, but I only use them like once a week because I don’t want to run out…so this year, I have been using one tanning wipe a week plus then about two days in-between, I’ve been using this stuff (to make my self tan last longer) and friends, IT’S WORKING!  Erika and I were talking self-tanner at the gym on Wednesday and then about 15 minutes later, my friend Megan asked me how I was so tan.  Ha!

Here’s exactly what I do to get my faux-glow…

1: I use the Dr. Dennis Gross face wipes year around (about every 5 to 6 days) at night for a little color.  The face wipes give you just a hint of color and are easy to apply.  They’re one of my FAVORITE beauty products of all time!!!

2: At night, after I shower, I dry off really well and then use one of the tanning wipes for my whole body.  I either ask Andrew to get my back or I’m lazy and skip that part (sigh).  Quickly unfold the wipe and wipe your whole body.  You don’t immediately see color, so that’s why I do it at night (the next morning, you’ll wake up with it).  Stand there about five minutes and let it dry before putting your clothes on before bed.  On these nights, I do not moisturize on top of it.

3: About 2 days or so after I use the tanning wipes, I will use this bronzing mousse to stretch my tan out.  Again, after I get out of the shower and dry off, I add this all over.  You do see the color immediately with this one, so don’t be alarmed.  Work really fast and don’t use too much.  The bottle recommends using a mit, but I just use my hands and then wash them pretty well when I’m done.  I let that air dry about five minutes and then put my pjs on.

So, if you’re dreaming of warmer days like me…this might help you 😉 .

I have talked to you guys in great length about how I love this…

The One Year Bible.  I’ve read through it now two years in a row and LOVE it!  It breaks down the Bible into 365 sections, so that you can easily read through it.  Well, our church just started doing something similar but through the YouVersion app on our phones.  I decided to join in and love it too!  First, just download the YouVersion app (which is one of my FAVORITES!!) and then at the bottom, click on “plans” and then search for the plan called “Read the Bible for Life 4+1” plan (it should pop right up).

This plan breaks down the Bible into 312 daily installments for you to read right there on your phone.  Our pastor told us about this on Sunday, so I started Monday morning.  You can also set a reminder to read it every day on your phone.  If you’ve ever wanted to read the Bible all the way through in one year, this is a great way to do it!

You know how much I love this dress

…this pic is from last February.  I wear it all the time…

…this pic is from this past week.  It comes in black too, but I heart the pink.  (My shoes are HERE and they come in so many other colors!)  I also heart these…

…they’re big Kendra Scott earrings but they’re not heavy.  I cannot do her heavy earrings (they’re so cute but my ears can’t handle the weight).  These are so much lighter!!

Last week, I told you that I ordered these

…and this week, here’s a picture of them.  Can it please be spring already so that I can actually wear them out of the house?!  They’re comfy and they’re cute…my favorite criteria for a wedge 🙂 .

Wrapping up today…

Butterscotch Banana Bread

…my Butterscotch Banana Bread!  Your weekend is calling and it says it needs this 🙂 .  See the recipe HERE.

Happy Friday, friends!   I hope you have a blessed weekend!!

I feel ya’ on the wet and yucky week. The weather’s been terrible where I live in Hong Kong, too. Cold, rainy, just so humid. Ugh. But it’ll get better! Happy Friday, Shay, and enjoy your weekend! ❤️

I’m pretty sure I over-self-tanned my face yesterday! But maybe a dark glow is better than pale? Hahaha! I’m not sure!

  • Elspeth Mizner February 23, 2018 at 5:24 am

I’m with you Shay! I’m ready for warmer weather and sunnier days!

  • Lauren February 23, 2018 at 5:39 am

For the face wipes, do you use the gradual tan or the regular ones? I see Nordstrom has both.

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 6:02 am

I almost always use the regular ones.

  • Carly February 23, 2018 at 5:50 am

Feeling the same way about the Olympics!! Counting down to Summer 2020! Have a great weekend.

  • Sheaffer Sims February 23, 2018 at 5:52 am

  • Tara G. February 23, 2018 at 5:56 am

Our orthodontist recommended a water pik and that also helped greatly reduce leftovers. 🙂

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 6:01 am

We haven’t had much luck with that. She ends up spraying everything but her mouth 😉 .

  • Mindy Tierney February 23, 2018 at 6:15 am

My daughter gets her braces off at the end of April. Wish I knew of that toothpaste earlier! She uses a WaterPik, but doesn’t always help. It’s sad to say, but she is 13 now and due to the braces my husband still checks and cleans out stuff with a special cleaning pick our ortho gave us. He helps her about once or twice a week.

  • Narci Dreffs February 23, 2018 at 6:18 am

Buying that toothpaste ASAP, and I adore that pink dress on you! So cute!

  • Amanda @ Cupcake N Dreams February 23, 2018 at 6:25 am

It’s funny you wrote about the tanning wipes today because after years of you recommending them, I finally went out and bought them this week! They really do give my face some extra color! I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner. I’m a big fan of the St.Tropez mousse too. It has been my go to when I want a full body tan. It’ so easy to use and doesn’t streak! Also, loving those KS earrings!

  • Erin Port February 23, 2018 at 6:38 am

Those wedges are too cute and feeling oh so pasty up here in Iowa but spring break and sunshine is coming for me – wahoo! xoxo ERIN

  • Brooke Richardson February 23, 2018 at 7:04 am

I know it’s only February but I can’t stop thinking about all things Summer. I really need some tanning help before that happens though. Lol.

  • Charmaine February 23, 2018 at 7:15 am

Hey Shay! Completely off topic, but as a Travel Agent…. What is your view of travelling to South Africa with their current droughts in Cape Town?

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 7:28 am

Andrew has been to South Africa the last three years in a row. I wouldn’t want to dissuade anyone from going there. I hope to visit myself one day soon.

  • Amanda Wilson February 23, 2018 at 7:25 am

I feel ya with the need for Spring and warmer weather. Enjoy your snuggly weekend!! Definately making that banana bread it looks delish!!!

  • Samantha Carfi February 23, 2018 at 7:25 am

I used to use St. Tropez mousse — UNTIL I discovered Loving Tan. Holy Crap. Best Self Tanner around! Grab it and try it — you will love it!!

    • Caroline February 26, 2018 at 8:54 pm

I will absolutely second Loving Tan! The best!!

  • Laci February 23, 2018 at 7:50 am

Ohhh all this self tan love! Gotta check it out!

  • Lori February 23, 2018 at 7:55 am

I can never get past the self tanner smell. I don’t know if I’m just extra sensitive to it but I have yet to find a self tanner that I couldn’t smell on my skin for days after using it. Do you notice that “self tanner smell”?

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 9:07 am

I don’t think the wipes have a smell (they’re scented, but it’s not like the “tanning” smell other products have). The mousse does have that smell.

    • Pamela February 24, 2018 at 5:14 pm

Thanks for asking that! Ha! It was exactly what I was going to ask. I can’t stand that smell, either. My husband always say’s, “What is that smell?” It just bothers me and I don’t feel clean with that smell. Thanks for asking:)

  • Lora February 23, 2018 at 8:09 am

I used to cut those tan wipes in half and get double use out of one. Definitely makes a pack last longer!

  • Cathy Miller February 23, 2018 at 8:12 am

When my daughter had braces her Ortho had us get a Oral B electric toothbrush with the round tip that spins. It worked great!

  • Laura Thomas February 23, 2018 at 8:13 am

Just ordered that toothpaste… we are desperate over here now that my 9 year old has braces!!! I have been taking him for cleanings every two months… since I can’t stand the amount of time it takes to floss his teeth. 🙂
I need to get on that self tanner, too. I am so scared of it staining my sheets. I have read how you do it many times, but I just haven’t done it. We are heading to Mexico for my husband’s work trip in May!!

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 9:06 am

This has never stained my sheets!

  • Alexis deZayas February 23, 2018 at 8:23 am

Yes yes to Orange Theory! It’s amazing! And those face towels really do work!

  • Kenda Cecil February 23, 2018 at 8:31 am

As a dental hygienist and Burst Ambassador, I would love to share my favorite new product- Burst sonic toothbrush! It is super affordable at only $39.99 with my professional code JHTBRD! Order online Burst also has sensitivity free whitening strips for only $14.99 with my code JHTBRD.
My teeth feel like they were just professionally cleaned.

    • Lauren February 23, 2018 at 10:48 am

How does this compare to Sonicare? Is it good for receding gums?

  • Vicki February 23, 2018 at 8:41 am

My son will be getting braces soon, glad to know about the toothpaste.

  • Courtney T February 23, 2018 at 8:44 am

Do either of these self tanners leave a smell? I love a good self tanner, but cannot stand that smell!

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 9:06 am

I don’t think the wipes have a scent but the foam does.

  • Angela Ellingson February 23, 2018 at 8:45 am

I’m going to hop over and read those workout comments. Needing some motivation this morning. 🙂

  • Suzy February 23, 2018 at 8:53 am

Love those Kendra Scott earrings! I have the necklace that matches those and love it!

  • Amanda February 23, 2018 at 9:00 am

Watch Dr Foster on Netflix, it is set in England:))

  • Mallory Bakker February 23, 2018 at 9:02 am

I bought these tanning wipes when you recommended them last winter. I LOVE the face ones, but really struggle with the body ones. I end up with streaks everywhere! Any tips?

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 9:04 am

Use the foam the next morning to blend out any steak spots. I find that practice makes perfect with the wipes, but if I ever miss a spot, the foam blends it all together.

    • Betsy February 23, 2018 at 12:25 pm

I had streaks too until I started to rub in body lotion afterwards. Just wait 2-3 minutes after applying the wipe and then rub in the lotion (instructions say to do so for best results). Eliminates just about all streaking and your skin gets moisturized (tanning stuff always seems to dry out my skin).

    • Kristen February 24, 2018 at 6:43 am

Same boat! Have been using the facial wipes for years. Love them. But have failed miserably when I use the body wipes on my legs.

  • Shelby Bourgeois @xoShelby February 23, 2018 at 9:10 am

Your tanning routine just made me freak out about how pasty I am! I’ll have to try some of these tips before my legs see the light of day!

  • Allison February 23, 2018 at 9:16 am

How do you use the wipes around your hands?? I can do it on my legs no problem but am worried it will look weird on my hands and fingers? Thanks!!

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 9:19 am

I don’t! I do a quick swipe over the tops of my hands but not the palms. Do them at the end when your wipe is more dry.

      • Allison February 23, 2018 at 10:06 am

        Thank you!!

  • Kelly Franks February 23, 2018 at 9:52 am

Okay, so the real question. At what point in your night time skin routine do you use the facial tanner? I’ve switched to almost all of your night time suggestions just not sure when to add the self tanner. I did try the facial razors that Ericka mentioned the other day. I’ve been using them a month now and love the way it keeps excess hair off my face (hello brunettes and our lovely mustaches) and exfoliates at the same time.

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 11:32 am

I use it right after I cleanse and before I put anything else on. I let it sit about five minutes and then I proceed with my serum and moisturizer.

  • Amanda @ That Inspired Chick February 23, 2018 at 9:57 am

Those earrings are calling my name!!! I need to start thinking about bringing my pasty skin back to the land of the living as well so I’m glad you posted the tanning stuff! Love your new wedges!! That Inspired Chick

  • Amie P February 23, 2018 at 10:37 am

My daughter got her braces a couple of weeks ago and me, at 39..yikes!, am getting them Monday so I was excited to read the info about this toothpaste. I will definitely be getting some!! Any advice for getting them as an adult I will take!!

  • Andrea February 23, 2018 at 10:41 am

I’m super fair skinned and don’t usually self tan because it just looks strange on me. Do you think these are worth me trying being so fair skinned? I use to use Clarins self tanner years ago. Thanks for input! 🙂

Happy Friday! Hope y’all have a great weekend!

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 11:31 am

Oh gosh! I don’t know. I don’t know how it will fair on your skin type. If you happen to try it, let me know what you think!

    • Tina February 23, 2018 at 12:33 pm

I am very fair skinned as well and was also curious if these wipes (or any self tanner really!) would look fake…I mean I don’t tan AT ALL naturally (just burn if I’m in the sun) so maybe any sort of “tan” would look bad?? I’m too scared to try!! LOL!

  • Amy February 23, 2018 at 10:45 am

I did the One-Year Bible last year thanks to your suggestion! I am doing a different plan on the YouVersion app called Trusting and Believing: Devotions from Times of Grace. Excited to look into more plans once that one ends! Happy weekend 🙂

  • Jaren February 23, 2018 at 10:47 am

I’ve been thinking about needing a self-tanner. We’ve had such mild weather down here in Louisiana this last week. It’s got me thinking about shorts season. I’m going to order your self-tanning products.
And I love that that toothpaste shows them where they are missing spots!

  • Heather February 23, 2018 at 11:52 am

Random – but what is your favorite hot tea to order at Starbucks? I’m wanting to order something other than a coffee drink (typically a tall flat white!). Thanks for any suggestions! ☺

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 2:16 pm

Well, I’m not really original. It’s typically English Breakfast.

  • lauren February 23, 2018 at 11:57 am

off topic, but could you like your adorable pink slip on shoes please? I have been looking but not sure which ones they are? Thank you

    • Mix and Match Mama February 23, 2018 at 2:15 pm

They’re from Nordstrom and the brand is Vince 🙂 .

  • Jill February 23, 2018 at 12:35 pm

As a Registered Dental Hygienist who works in Pediatric Dentistry, just wanted to recommend Platypus Ortho flossers in case you’re not familiar with them. Flossing around wires and brackets is not an easy thing to do. These will make it much easier! You can find them on Amazon.

  • Laurie February 23, 2018 at 1:32 pm

A Waterpik Cordless Advanced is the best! It’s waterproof so used in the shower so little room for error! Can be bought on amazon.

  • Abby February 23, 2018 at 2:15 pm

My son got braces last year and he had a really hard time getting all the food out from in between. Then a friend suggested we get a waterpik because her sister used one when she was younger. That waterpik was a lifesaver! It got all the food out and helped clean the places where brushes couldn’t go. Also, flossing just didn’t happen with the braces but this waterpik pretty much did the job.

  • Emily February 23, 2018 at 2:24 pm

I LOVE these tanning wipes! Just wondering if you still use exfoliators and/or your Clairsonic when you’re using them? I feel like they just scrub off any “tan” I have on my face. I’m always torn – fresh, exfoliated face or sun-kissed face?? How do you do both? Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama February 24, 2018 at 6:21 am

I spread out the use of my Clarisonic and exfoliators when I use the tanning wipes. I don’t want to scrub them off.

  • Kim February 23, 2018 at 2:58 pm

Get her a sonicare for those braces! We recommend them to all our patients, especially the kids with braces, it really does help!

  • Abbey February 23, 2018 at 3:40 pm

Please do a closet post. Your closet always looks amazing in your pics!

  • Tammy February 24, 2018 at 8:56 am

I have the One Year Bible and love it ! It makes reading the Bible so much easier ! Those Kendra Scott Earrings are perfection !

  • Jill Hauck February 24, 2018 at 10:31 am

I love to be tan, but hate the smell of tanning creams. Do either of these products have strong scent?

    • Mix and Match Mama February 25, 2018 at 5:30 am

the wipes do not…the mousse has a scent. I don’t think it’s too strong, but it does have one.

  • Nicole February 25, 2018 at 1:06 pm

Is it difficult for you to hit your steps goal on Sundays? I don’t want to work out on Sundays, with church, lunch with family and evening church, we are pretty busy! But I find I’m not as active. What do your Sundays look like? Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama February 26, 2018 at 5:22 am

I teach the three year olds at church on Sundays…so that helps 😉 . We stay pretty busy around the house (especially when the weather is nice), so it’s usually not hard. That being said, if it’s cold and rainy, the couch will call my name on a Sunday and that’s okay with me too. xo

  • Erin February 26, 2018 at 6:53 pm

Try Sonicare toothbrushes for Kensington if you haven’t already! They saved me when I was in braces all through middle school and high school. I still use it to this day!

  • Heidi March 1, 2018 at 9:19 am

I used those tanning wipes for a while, but it just got to be too expensive. I found the L’Oreal Sublime wipes (sold EVERYWHERE!) for a fraction of the cost, and I haven’t used anything else since!
