Inside Our Kitchen


A few weeks ago, I shared photos of the inside of our pantry and many of you asked to see our kitchen too.
In our 10 years of married life, Andrew and I have lived in 5 different places…and in every single home, the kitchen was the center of the house.  When we started planning and preparing to build our new house, the functionality and design of our kitchen was really one of our biggest priorities.
This kitchen is where we live.
Come on inside our kitchen :).
 We wanted the kitchen really open and in the center of the house.  We wanted it to be the spot where people gathered.

 On either side of my farmhouse sink is a dishwasher.

This is our favorite part of the kitchen (and maybe even my favorite part of the house).  We sit up here, the kids play up here, every morning, I read my Bible and have breakfast up here, I can use this space for serving platters during parties, people can sit right there and chat with us while we’re cooking… it’s just a great place right by the big windows looking out.

Right off of the coffee bar area is our little prep kitchen area.  This little area (often called a butler’s pantry) is between the kitchen and dining room and holds an extra sink, mini fridge, ice maker and all of our china, seasonal dishes and serving pieces.

We’ve lived in our house about 8 weeks now and the kitchen is most definitely our favorite room.  The best parts of my day are spent in that room with my sweet hubby and kiddos.

    Oh my gosh – your kitchen is dreamy. That stone, the layout, the colors – everything! Do you love the big farmhouse sink? I love the look and really want one, but also love letting dishes drip dry in my double sink. And I'm totally envious of your two dishwashers!

    Stunning! I can't imagine it ever looking bad…even with dishes piled up, it must still look beautiful! The stone sort of reminds me of some of the kitchens I've seen on cooking shows – maybe Paula Deen's??

    Do you have 4 dishwashers? You mentioned 2 by the farmhouse sink but are those 2 in the butlers pantry as well?

    Love, love, love! Simply gorgeous. I have an open kitchen too and love how everyone can hang out and chat when I'm cooking. What I don't have and would love is a second dishwasher, ice maker, and coffee bar (although I'm working on that one!). Thanks for letting us into your kitchen. Now I want a piece of cake! 🙂

    I love your Butlers Pantry area (always wanted one). That was such a smart idea to do the granite in front of the windows for an extra serving area, I probably would have done a window seat but like what you did instead. You have a gorgeous house, what does the outside look like?

    Your kitchen is magnificent. I love all the lighting fixtures and the bar stools. I clicked on your link to look at what's on your walls…somehow I missed that post from June. I visited Monticello last week and your library reminded me of Thomas Jefferson's library (very old books with similar covers). Anyway, I thought two great Jefferson quotes would look really good if they were made into signs to display in your library. "Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom" and "I cannot live without books".

    Hey ladies! The funny thing is that the one thing that didn't go smoothly with our house was that darn rug in front of the stove! It took the store 11 months to get it to me (when it should have taken them like a month). It was such a weird mess. Anyway…it's from Anderson's Home Furnishings if you dare order one for yourself…hopefully, you won't need it until next year :).

We have talked about when we build putting in two washing machines and two washers. Lets be honest – you just need these things if there is more than one person living in a house! Beautiful choices!     I love what Nate Berkus says: "Your home should rise up to greet you." Since you rise early and head straight to the kitchen for your coffee, I can only imagine that your kitchen does this for you. It's truly a beautiful space! After such a long process and countless hours planning what it would look like, are there still days that you can't believe it's all real and actually done?     Everything is beautiful! I would so love to know your paint colors on your kitchen cabinets (cabinets and island!) and the paint color on the wall with the canvas pictures of your kids (run color?). We're, similar to you, building a custom home on over an acre with a creek ha, just over in Georgia, and oh the endless decision! Of then all, I've had the hardest time nailing down paint colors! But like you said in another post, we're also aiming for the grays/blues palette but I want warmer grays that aren't too far off from a good beige. And that's what yours looks like. Thanks!! And p.s. have totally gone to Savannah (when we lived in North Carolina, like 10 hrs away), just for Lady & Sons. Can't be beat! 🙂 I hope you got a praline from River Street Sweets too!

    Can you please tell me where you bought the small lamps I have seen in several places in your home. You have one in your office and one by the coffee maker. I have looked everywhere: stores and websites and can't find anything.

    Hi Shay! I was wondering what type of flooring you have in your kitchen? We recently had a pipe burst in our kitchen wall, and it's now completely gutted. I would like to replace the flooring with a wood or wood laminate or something similar, in the kitchen and throughout the whole house. The reconstruction guy recommended us not putting that type in the kitchen, as it would not hold up well!? Your flooring looks exactly as I would like and I would like to get your thoughts on the durability of it, and whether you would recommend it for the kitchen? Thanks so much!!

      Hi there! Okay, they are custom cabinets and we kind of created a custom paint by combining several shades of blue and gray and then antiquing them with black. The lights are from Passion Lighting. You have a great day too!
