Hey hey Wellness Wednesday!
You guys, settle in because today, I have three VERY different blog posts for you.
First up, I’m sharing my EVEN EASIER WEEKNIGHT FAJITAS (perfect for this last week of school!) plus, it’s the 2025 EDITION OF MY SUMMER CLOSET STAPLES, and then in this post, I’m going to hopefully get us all thinking about our URINARY, PELVIC FLOOR, & BLADDER HEALTH.
Truly, could that be a more eclectic mix of posts? I think not. 😉
Here’s the deal, I don’t have a lot to say on today’s wellness topic. I more want to point you in the direction of experts who do have a lot to say and then I just want us all to think about it. Sound like a plan?
This topic is near and dear to my heart. I shared this in a Bestie Breakdown podcast episode, but in August 2022, I had surgery for a bladder sling because you guys, post-hysterectomy, my bladder was a MESS.
Please note, there are A LOT of disclaimers/I’m not telling you to do this/please hear me/etc. in that last sentence.
The more I learn about my own health and wellness, the more I realize just how unfortunate it was that I had a hysterectomy at 38 and a bladder sling at 40. Both of these things are EXTREME. They were necessary, and I still feel good about those decisions, but I wouldn’t want anyone to think I take them lightly. I just want you to know that I’m over here thinking about my bladder and based on a lot of podcasts I listen to, I think many of you might be too. Aging is hard. Aging for women is really hard. And our bladders don’t make it easier for us.
So, if you are thinking about your bladder, your pelvic floor, your urinary issues (and honestly, I didn’t even realize I had so many *issues* until I listened to a lot of podcasts/read a lot of books and learned what I was/am experiencing is not ‘normal’), then I really think these next two episodes are for YOU. I listened to both and found them SO valuable.
Both of these are from Everyday Wellness with Cynthia Thurlow…
I really encourage you to listen to both!
I shared this on Friday, but I also cannot recommend…
…Peter Attia’s podcast episode on Women’s Sexual Health, Menopause, and HRT enough. Truly, this episode is LOADED with information about women and our health.
So, that’s it for today. Don’t forget, I also have EVEN EASIER WEEKNIGHT FAJITAS and the 2025 EDITION OF MY SUMMER CLOSET STAPLES today too!
I hope this post gives us all something to think about today. Sending you so much love! xx

Thank you for sharing these podcasts. I’m actually in the middle of listening to the Peter Attia from when you first shared it. It’s just so hard to find time when the kids aren’t in the car lol. I’m really so grateful that in general there is so much more attention to these issues for women.

Interesting topics!! I’ll have to check them out!

Love Peter Attia’s episode with Dr. Rachel Rubin. It was so so good! Everyone should take a listen! Thanks for sharing!

Happy Wed! I listen to the Peter Atia podcast each week, but the episode on hormones and sexual health was incredible. WOW, so much good information. I love love love knowledge (knowledge is power) when it comes to our health and wellness, because we are our own advocates and need to be informed so we can make the best choices for our health and lives. Thanks for sharing these types of podcasts and the information!

I do too, but that one in particular was EXTRA amazing.

Shay, please share your Dr and HRT clinic again. Thank you

Just started pelvic floor therapy at age 52 and it is necessary and helping me make some changes before surgery. Wish I would have none about it 8 years ago when I had my hysterectomy.

Thank you for sharing this info! I am in my mid 40s and have been experiencing bladder and pelvic floor issues. I look forward to listening to these podcasts!

Fantastic recommendations! I had a hystertomy at age 53; suffered the first 4 months of last year with various post surgery issues. Luckily my doctor is awesome and referred me to their PRISM program at the hospital. I ended up doing two months of pelvic floor therapy. What a difference that made in my life!
Thank you for addressing issues that might be uncomfortable to talk/write about. You really do create a safe space in your blog!
I hope you have a great summer with your family!

Already listen to both while doing yard and house work. Such good information. Since it’s Wellness Wed, I have two questions. When you blogged about your supplements, you said brain health is so important to you. Have you taken the APOE blood test that shows your risk for Alzheimer’s? Second question, do you still lift heavy in a fastest state? I heard Cynthia Thurlow and Mindy Pelz both talk about how they are starting to incorporate eating protein before heavy lifting when trying to gain muscle.
Mix and Match Mama says
I have not taken the test to see if I have the 4 gene, but I’ve thought about it. I do not have any family history of Alzheimer’s (I know that certainly doesn’t eliminate me from getting it), so getting the genetic test has been on my mind but not the forefront. I lift in a fasted state because I lift so early in the day (around 5:30/6:00ish).

I listened to the Peter Attia podcast you recommended and it was really good. The doctor clearly came from a conventional medicine perspective which I can appreciate but I think there is a lot of good out there in the alternative side of things especially since traditional allopathic medicine clearly has let down women in a huge way. She gave more cart blanche credit to the FDA than I am comfortable with but it still was a great podcast and I agree with your recommendation.
I almost sent you an email to recommend that podcast with Dr. Sara Reardon! So it’s funny to see it here! I’m going to have to listen to the other one you mention.
I’m 66 and have not been on HRT but am moving in that direction. It is VERY hard to find doctors. I feel so frustrated that I was not steered in that direction years ago and so agree with Dr. Rachel Rubin that perimenopausal (me when in my 40s) and menopausal (me now) women have received terrible service from the medical establishment. The more I learn the more frustrated I have gotten and to get good help now is hard to come by. If you have any GYN recommendations (I am in your same area), I would love to hear. (I do know about Dr. Reigel but am looking for a GYN even aside from HRT).
Thanks for sharing all the good info!

Thank you for sharing about this! I definitely want to listen to the podcast episodes. I’ve been doing virtual pelvic floor therapy kind of as a preventative because I’m 40. Never had kids, but have had pressure and the urge to go more, but no other perimenopause symptoms as of yet. Hopefully all this info you compiled will have some good tips!

After you talked to openly about your sling, and after birthing 5 babies in 5.5 years… I went to a urogynocologist, who immediately told me I was a perfect candidate for a sling – and after trying to find the perfect time to be out of commission for a while with 5 little kids I finally had my procedure and LIFE CHANGING is an understatement! I can now run, play jump, drive over speed bumps 🤪
Thank you for sharing your journey and giving me the courage to take my health in my own hands!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh my goodness, thank YOU for sharing your story. I am so happy you and your doctor made proactive choices for your health. xx

Shay, may I suggest another podcast for you to listen to?
Sue’s Healthy Minutes with Sue Becker | The Bread Beckers
https://open.spotify.com/show/5IfHB2yQzvYDU8q3PqcNYp?si=Jh8dWL-qSGeXeuxpRj4t5A
Sue is a food scientist that explains the science behind how our bodies react to everything we eat, and she also manages to tie a lot of it back to Biblical references. It’s been fascinating! She also has a lot of “poopy talk” (digestion and elimination discussions) in her episodes, which made me think of you 🤣😜
