Happy Wednesday, friends!
Today’s post was on my “you should blog about this” list, so I hope you like it…it’s a little look at me heading from ACK to DFW and bACK 🙂 .
I mean, this is either going to be very interesting or very boring…I don’t know yet, but as I was taking pictures I kept thinking “this is a lot of me in the airport”, ha!
There are several ways one could get to get to Nantucket…but let’s save that for another day. Today is just a DAY(S) IN THE LIFE as I traveled from Nantucket to Dallas and back over the weekend.
Here we go…
Good morning from Nantucket! The sun shines bright and early on the island this time of year, so I was up and out of bed at 5:30 that morning with my coffee and quiet time. Spoiler alert, I awoke to my connecting flight from Boston to DFW being cancelled due to weather in Dallas…so my morning started with a frantic call to American Airlines to get me rebooked followed by time with the Lord. (Let’s be clear though, I was praying the entire time I was on hold 😉 ).
After that, I went for a run, did some laundry, hung with my littles for a bit, showered and…
…got ready to leave.
Andrew dropped me off at the airport around 9:15…
…just like Wings 😉 .
I checked in for my Cape Air flight, and it was the normal drill: they weighed my tote, my carry on bag and asked me how much I weighed. All the fun details when flying on a small prop plane.
And then we boarded. Where does the luggage go one might ask? Well, there are all sorts of compartments in the wings, in the nose of the plane (see how it’s lifted up there), and literally everything goes in there. You can hold your phone and a drink or something, but you can’t take bags and purses inside with you.
I had the window seat in the very back (they assign your seat as you’re boarding based on weights and balances).
And off we went! One thing I LOVE about Nantucket is that it’s not over-developed. In fact, they have a Land Bank that requires a 2% purchase fee for every transfer of property. For instance, when we bought our home, we had to pay in our closing costs 2% to the Land Bank so that they can purchase land on the island for the express purpose of people not being able to develop it…which is why, as you can see, it’s so undeveloped.
Off we went. As you can imagine, this plane is tiny and my motion sickness is on high alert which is why I always pop in my AirPods, turn on The Office Ladies and close my eyes for the 45 minute ride to Boston.
There’s Boston!
TOUCH DOWN! Woohoo!
I got off the plane and walked over to the other side of the airport for…
..lunch. I had a salad with extra extra protein.
After that…
…I grabbed a coffee and worked.
Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’ to my gate…
Time to catch my flight to Dallas…
…off we went…
…from Boston to…
…Dallas 🙂 .
I landed, drove home, ordered takeout, took a shower…
…and was in my bed by 7:45 watching The Office (with my pups!). Weird fact, we’ve lived here for 10 years, and this was the very first time I had EVER slept in my house alone. Andrew has slept there alone, but I never had until this night.
The next morning, I was up at 5:00…
…with my dogs and my morning routine 🙂 .
I got ready and then…
…picked up my bestie so that we could drive to…
…SMU to watch our girls perform at the last day of cheer camp and bring them home after.
It was so much fun watching the girls, but the a/c wasn’t turned on in the coliseum and we were HOT! By the time we dropped off the Slaughter girls, we headed home, showered, and chilled out the rest of the day/night. We were beat.
Around 9:00ish, I told Kensington that I was heading to bed, and she said “We could go get Sonic Blasts. I’ll drive.”. I can’t turn that down. In our pjs, she drove us…
…and we listened to Taylor Swift and ate ice cream in the car.
The next morning as I strolled through the house…
…I smiled at my pup sitting there so happy and sweet.
After church, we headed to the grocery store to get food for lunch and other necessities including…
…these are the best sparkling waters when making Ranch Waters. Our store has been out, but they were in stock on this day, so I bought four boxes.
Later that night, I was supposed to have dinner with my cheer mom friends but it POURED…
…sooooo much rain! We cancelled dinner which means that Kensington and I put on our pjs, watched a movie (500 Days of Summer), and I made us my EASY EGG SCRAMBLE. I went to bed around 9:00 because…
…my Monday morning started early as I made my way back to Nantucket…
…here I go through the parking lot at DFW. Let’s do this in reverse now…
…inside DFW Airport…
…my flight was delayed by 45 minutes, so I grabbed coffee and worked…
…and waited for my flight.
Woohoo! Off I go back to Boston…
..it was a wheels up work day!
About 3.5 hours later…
…we landed in Boston.
I walked over from my gate to where Cape Air is located in the airport…
…I grabbed the most random lunch (I was looking for protein). I had a breakfast sandwich and a chicken Caesar salad with regular water AND sparkling water.
Around 4:00 it was time…
…to board the Cessna and take the 45 minute flight to Nantucket.
I sat behind the copilot which, if I’m being honest, thrilled me because about half the time there is not a copilot and call me crazy, but I prefer when at least two people on board know how to not kill me in the tiny plane. Please note how close I am sitting to said copilot.
Up we went.
Now, I am not a large person (like my husband for example). Some might even call me “petite”.
This is legitimately how I had to sit for the 45 minute flight…
Yup. See the feet of the lady next to me? She’s having to do the same. It’s a tiny little bird we’re on.
And there’s Nantucket!
They always let us know we can take pics but ask that we don’t show the pilot’s instruments (why I scribbled them out). Do you see her visor though? You better believe that when I’m on that plane without a copilot I read the “landing instructions” that are printed on there. I have no idea what the heck a “flap” is, but it tells me what to do with one when landing.
And just like that, I’m back on Nantucket.
Here we are walking from the plane into the airport where…a VERY excited 9 year old (still in her pajamas…even though it was 5:00 PM!) greeted me with her daddy 🙂 .
And that’s a day(s) in the life of me going from ACK to DFW and bACK. xx
Lori Whittington says
I love these post! Where is Kensington? Does she have to do this by herself when she comes?
Mix and Match Mama says
She will not come back by herself. In the meantime, she had somewhere else to be, so I got her squared away and came back.
Jess says
Random odd question. What do you pack in your suitcase on a trip back to Dallas and then back to Nantucket? Do you just switch out some clothes? Or do you bring it incase you get “stuck” somewhere? Just curious!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Not a lot of things. I had my Bible, Bible Recap and journal (my morning stuff), a pair of shoes I realized I didn’t need up there, one dress of Mades’ that I wanted to take back…I’m trying to think, it wasn’t much. On the return, I brought back with me a pair of shorts, a pair of cream colored jeans, my Bible stuff again…not much.
Shana Gardner says
I’m so glad you asked this question! Lol I was wondering the same thing. There’s no way I’d want to take a carryon if I did not need one and thought surely she didn’t in this scenario. Just how our curious minds work, not judging whatever 😊
Elspeth says
What a quick trip! Did Kensington come back with you to stay home? Thanks for letting us tag along!
http://www.elspethsdaybyday.com
Mix and Match Mama says
Details to come! She actually left and went somewhere else. It’s been a busy summer already for the Shulls!
Sheaffer says
So much good information here….. but all I can focus on is that THE AIR WASN’T ON AT SMU. What????? WHY NOT?
Mix and Match Mama says
No one could ever give us a clear explanation. Some said it was broken, others said they just didn’t turn it on. We were ROASTING!
Lori says
How does Andrew fit on the small plane?!?!
Mix and Match Mama says
uncomfortably.
Robin says
😂
Ashlea Patterson says
I get crazy motion sick ! Is the airplane better than the ferry?
Mix and Match Mama says
It depends on the day. The ferry takes longer (60 minutes on the speed ferry) and from Boston, it includes a car ride of an hour and a half to two hours, so you really have to “pick your motion sickness poison”.
Karen Tyler says
Because of your posts all these years, I’ve chosen Nantucket to celebrate my 50th Birthday next month. Trying to decide how to get from Boston to Nantucket. Is the very easiest to fly over to the island? Or ubering and taking the ferry? We want to maximize our time there! Please keep the Nantucket updates coming… we have no idea what we are doing so I love all of your posts! 🙂 Enjoy!
Mix and Match Mama says
Do you have to come from Boston? Do you live there? If you live elsewhere, there are easier ways during the month of July. Email me! I’d love to help you especially since it’s for something SO special! mixandmatchmama@yahoo.com 🙂
Natalie A. says
Thanks for sharing! Will your other dogs be joining you in Nantucket? 😊 🐶
Mix and Match Mama says
They will!
Michelle says
I was wondering the same thing! Will they fly or are you having them escorted again?
Mix and Match Mama says
Once you’re 15+ you don’t have to be escorted any more. All passengers under 15 are required to be escorted. She’s not returning alone though, so it’s not an issue. I absolutely think she could do it though 🙂 .
Natasha says
I think they meant the dogs, not Kensington! 🙂
Although speaking of 15+, my 15 year old son is flying halfway across the country on his own for the first time this summer and I could use some prayers… I’m super excited for him and kind of a wreck for me.
Mix and Match Mama says
Wow! I LOVE that he’s willing/able to do that! Amazing!
Kristen says
I think she is talking about the dogs!! , lol
MelanieL says
Oh my goodness, this is fascinating!! Ha ha! I love that you make the best of your life and time and go bACK and forth so you don’t miss out on any of the summer fun. 🙂
Stacey says
Love posts like this. Thanks for sharing!!
Sara Alexander says
So many logistics in your summer already! All fun stuff, but so much to think and plan for! Do you just leave your car at the DFW airport? And how many people can fly on the little prop plane? Thanks for taking us along!
Maddy says
So fun! Is it hard to navigate delays/cancelled flights when connecting through ACK? I’m assuming they only offer a few fights a day since it’s a small airline?
Mix and Match Mama says
The DFW weather delays have been terrible over the last few weeks. Cape Air, this time of year, has several flights going to ACK each day, so that helps. I gave myself room though between connections, so I never missed my original flights.
Kay says
This was such a fun post! I am (unfortunately) absolutely terrified of flying. So I really liked seeing how it can be just a normal, non event in someone else’s life! I may be biased (I live in the Boston suburbs) but I love the Boston skyline. It’s so pretty! Hope you have a wonderful time back on Nantucket!
Beth says
I love that I knew exactly what Office episode you were watching— Cafe Disco! Is there anything better than the office??
Thanks for sharing your weekend 💕
Mix and Match Mama says
It NEVER gets old!!!
Lisa Black says
Me too! 😂🤦🏻♀️
Grace says
When you noted below that you were greeted by a very excited 9 year old still in their PJ’s at 5pm, the days in life of the family in Nantucket would have been interesting:). Glad you had a safe and fun trip to TX and back.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well that is certainly a day in the life when dad is in charge. Bahaha! I was like “Mades, those are you pjs!”. She had clearly been too busy playing to change.
Patty Anderson says
That high protein salad you had in Boston as you headed to Dallas…yum! It looked amazing! We’ll be flying into Boston in March…where can I get such a thing?
Mix and Match Mama says
Right next to gate B8 at Legal Sea Foods 🙂 .

To comment on what you started off with – this was such an interesting post! I so enjoy reading about the step-by-step process for others’ travels and it inspires me for our own. There’s just something special to me in seeing and learning about where others are and what they are up to. I had to smile at how excited I was when it was time for you guys to return to Nantucket for the summer because last summer, I so enjoyed reading what you shared. Do you guys have any plans to vacation elsewhere this summer, or are you sticking close and soaking up your time on the island? Summer goes by so fast, doesn’t it? As always, thanks for what you share!
Mix and Match Mama says
Summer goes by SO FAST! I’m already afraid I won’t be able to do/see “all the things”.
Susan says
We are visiting Arlington right now and yesterday drove through the DFW coming back from Grapevine…it’s beyond massive and I just kept thinking (as I was white knuckling the passenger door) Shay does this ALL the time!!! 😳😳
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s beyond massive! I don’t do it every day though, I like to say within a two mile radius of my house. Hahahaha!
Ana says
Loved this post, Shay! Would you mind linking the dress you’re wearing on your way back to Nantucket, please? Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! It’s the same one I wore coming home from Bali. It’s so comfy! https://shopstyle.it/l/cb84b
Amy J says
You told us about the ginger Dramamine in a post. I took it riding backseat for a 2 hour road trip. It worked great with no sleepiness. Do you take it for the small plane? If not, I’m curious why not?
Mix and Match Mama says
YAY!!!! It’s so great, right?! I was taking one before each flight, but now that it’s summer and the weather seems much calmer than when I went in Feb and March, I haven’t been taking them in advance…but they’re in my bag right there with me. Do you see the little blue pouch in that photo where I’m crammed in my seat? I have four of the ginger gummies in there “just in case” along with one pill (why I have the water with me in the photo too). I didn’t need any but I was prepared!
Kimberlee S Nelson says
Would you mind sharing the link for the ginger gummies that you mention? Sounds like a good thing to have on hand for upcoming flights and travel. Thank you so much!
Mix and Match Mama says
If you’re not a ginger fan, no worries, in my opinion, they taste like a lemon cream pie. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Dramamine-Ginger-Chews-Relieves-Nausea-Lemon-Honey-Ginger-Flavor-20-Soft-Chews/1885287718?from=/search
Kimberlee S Nelson says
Ordered! Thank you so much! 🙂
Laci L Murray says
this was fun to see the details! Busy lady!
Kristin Lyngaas says
That was so fun to look at 😁🩷 my favorite was you going to Sonic with Kensington. What a fabulous and unplanned night. Plus T Swift? Who would turn that down 🩷🩷
Michelle Nobbe says
Love this post! I want to visit Nantucket because of you and your family. Ha! Random question, how do you make your ranch water?
Mix and Match Mama says
Tequila, Topo Chico (if I can’t find these sparkling waters in the post) and lime. Easy as that!
Nicole says
what a great post! I have always wanted to visit, but never realized all the logistics
Quick question…what is the little blue bag you had with you on the small flight back? I have been looking for something like that!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s the little bag that comes inside my St. Louis Goyard tote. I just bring it on board with me because it has my AirPods and Dramamine 😉 .
Martha says
Loved this post… thank you!!
K.K. says
I LOVE these posts!! I think the conversations in the comments are just as entertaining!
andrea in mn says
How did you get from the Dallas airport home? Had someone placed the car there for you in advance?
Mix and Match Mama says
I had parked my car there when I left on Saturday. I just walked to my car and drove myself home 🙂 .
Jodi says
Were the dogs with a boarder at home?
Mix and Match Mama says
They were home with Kensington and other people. They weren’t alone (and neither was she!). They were certainly excited to see me though. Kensington was pretty excited, the dogs LOST THEIR MINDS. 🙂
Arika says
These “boring” posts are my favorite ones! Seeing how other people navigate the logistics of everyday life is fun to read about, And Nantucket takes the blue ribbon for cutest airport of all time! Wings was one of my favorite shows ever, so I always love those references in your posts!
Monica Stoleson says
Loved this post SO very much!
Thank you for sharing and for the gummy recommendations.
Sarah Shaneyfelt says
This was such a fun post!!! And I cannot believe they didn’t have the air on in SMU’s gym–those poor girls were probably about to die from heat exhaustion!

Emily says
Do you have a link for your suitcase? I’m in the market for a new carry-on.
Curious – could you take larger suitcases on the Nantucket flight? Is it only propeller planes that go there (other than private)?
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s a Tumi. I just looked it up. Ours isn’t new (so they might be slightly different), but it’s this model: https://www.tumi.com/p/international-dual-access-4-wheeled-carry-on-01171602693/ You can take a larger suitcase but there are size limits and you’re limited to how much you can check.
hayley beck says
Did I miss why you went home for the weekend? Couldn’t Erica have picked K up? I totally must have missed something!
Also, have you ever gotten your kidney function checked? I read in Outlive that a surplus of protein requires regular kidney checks as they filter the protein / can get clogged. Just wondered your thoughts!
Mix and Match Mama says
Well, I wanted to see them perform too! Erika could have totally picked them up, but I wanted to watch the competition and see my girl 🙂 . And yes, in fact, I just did a really comprehensive physical in April. I’m so glad you read Outlive!
Beth Knecht says
Are you wearing a black bodysuit in the picture with your luggage in Nantucket? Love the look!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you! No, I’m wearing a Michael Stars tank from Evereve 🙂 .
Maggie Eterno says
Love these posts! I’d love to know what’s in your tote when you travel on a plane! I travel a lot and I carry the whole house with me 😂. I’m always curious to see what others travel with.
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s always the same things: wallet, a little pouch with a few pieces of makeup (lipstick, gloss, etc), a little pouch that holds pens, band aids, eye drops, a tiny bottle of antibacterial, a little lotion, extra hair ties…this pouch has all the random things, my MacBook, my kindle, my AirPods and then once I’m through security, maybe a bottle of water. Plus, I alway put a scarf in there to use as a blanket on the flight.
Laura C says
Love your posts and getting to know your beautiful family. And thanks to you, I love Bible recap!
Question about the scarf you take that you use as a blanket, can you share a link for it? I’m always so cold in an airplane! Thanks again!
Mix and Match Mama says
I always use a different one. I prefer the ones that are really big but light in material as they cover me (and can double over) but they’re not heavy in my bag.
