Happy happy Tuesday, friends!
Well, based on your blog topic suggestions (that I collected at the beginning of January), “how to get started in the Bible” was one of the most popular ones…which makes my heart SO HAPPY! 🙂
Today, I’m going to share my tips and suggestions, but I certainly hope others of you who also read and study God’s word each day chime in as well.
First and foremost, you’re going to need a Bible to study the Bible, so here are my two favorite suggestions:
1: There is no “right” or “wrong” edition of the Bible, but my favorite is the New Living Translation (NLT) Life Application Study Bible. I love this version because it includes commentary. As you read, you can refer to the bottom of each page for additional commentary to help you really understand and comprehend the Bible. Plus, there are entire pages of maps, profiles of people, etc that also help me have a better understanding. I have had my edition of this Bible for 21 years now, and it’s still my very very favorite.
2: I highly recommend everyone owning a physical Bible, but if you can’t or should you just want a second option, I also love the Bible app called YouVersion. This is the most comprehensive Bible app I’ve found, and I use mine all the time as a reference. Not only does this app have every version of the Bible (so you could look up what you’re studying in the King James if you want or the NIV, etc), but it also has Bible studies, devotionals, videos, a place to share and connect with others…it’s a great app.
So, after you have your copy of God’s word, my suggestion is to actually S-T-U-D-Y it with intentionality. You can study it on your own (which a lot of people do!), but I prefer a “study guide” to help guide me through the Bible, offer insights and additional commentary, questions to have me reflect and/or questions to challenge me. I love an actual study. You could do this on an app (like through YouVersion), but I love a good old fashioned book…
My “typical” routine is to go through The Bible Recap each day and then add a little bit of an additional Bible study along with it. Do you have to do that? No way! This is just what works for me. Why do I do this? Well, this is my fourth trip through The Bible Recap, and I LOVE IT. I’ve learned more through this study than I did the other 30 years of reading God’s word. I absolutely love reading it and then listening to the podcast each day. (For more details on what it is head here!)
Now, since this is my fourth time through The Bible Recap though, I also want to add a little “non-chronological” and more “topical” Bible studying to my days, so I also include a little bit of a separate Bible study to my routine. Right now, I’m currently also studying No Other Gods by Kelly Minter each morning too.
If you’ve never studied God’s word before, my advice would be to start out with a Bible and a study. Whether you choose a topical study (like on parenting or marriage or anxiety, etc) or a study of a particular person (like Jesus or David or Moses) or a chronological study (like The Bible Recap), I do not think ANY of it returns void. I think no matter what you’re opening the Bible and studying each day (reading, filling out your Bible study, praying over), you will be blessed by it and GROW in your relationship with Christ.
How do you find a Bible study? Well, you can look on Amazon or you can search them on Bible bookstores’ websites too. For instance, here is one store’s site where you can find Bible studies. I think Lifeway has a wonderful selection of studies too!
So find a nice comfy place that’s quiet, settle in with your Bible, your study, your favorite pens and markers and get to reading. I like to read my Bible at home, but my dad, for example, reads and studies his at Starbucks every morning. You do what works best for YOU!
Now, what about “devotionals”?
This particular devotional is my very favorite. I’ve read it many times over the years, and I recommend it often.
This one…
…is a new one I’m reading this year and really like it too. How do I incorporate devotionals? Well, for me personally, they’re quick little nuggets that I can read at the end of my Bible study time. They’re often really short with a verse or two and a little commentary. These can be used in addition to your time in God’s word studying scripture. I don’t read my devotional book every day (because by the time I’m done with my two studies, there often isn’t a need for more), but on days when I have time/need a little something extra, it’s nice to have a devotional option too.
Should you really want to dig in deep in God’s word, it’s great to have commentaries available as an extra resource. These are my favorites. This really gets you in deeper.
And just as a reference, these are the Bible studies that I have done and LOVED over the years. I think I’ve done that David study four times. These are all great resources.
One more great resource, I shared this last year…
…but if your current Bible needs to be rebound, I used Legacy Bible Rebinders…
…and cannot rave about them enough. My “new” old Bible looks AMAZING! None of the pages are falling out any longer, the cover is holding it up now…I’m beyond thrilled with what they did. My Bible looked so good that Andrew used them for his too.
So, there you go.
If you have ANY questions whatsoever, please comment. I’m happy to offer my advice/opinion to anyone looking to study God’s word. If you would love a Bible and cannot afford one at this time, please email me! It would be my honor to send you one. mixandmatchmama@yahoo.com
Have the best day, friends! I’ll see you tomorrow. 😉

Hi Shay! Thank you for providing so many devotional suggestions. I’m curious, are you reading anything special for lent? Or, do you have a lenten devotional you recommend?
Mix and Match Mama says
No, I’m not reading anything specifically for lent. I’m currently doing The Bible Recap and the Kelly Minter studies alone.
jess says
I recently started using the Through the Word app and I really love it! I got an email yesterday that they have a Lent study.
Lorraine says
Paul David Trip has a WONDERFUL lent devotional, called Journey to the Cross. It will stir your heart in new ways toward Jesus. I have read it three years in a row and am excited to read it again this year.
Bethany says
The She Reads Truth community has a study on Isaiah!
Sarah Snell says
Love The Bible Recap! Tara Leigh Cobble has some other great studies too – currently doing one on Matthew by her. She Reads Truth is another great resource that I have found wonderful studies on as well. And one of my all time favorites, Knowing God by Name by Mary Kassian. Thanks for the great words this morning Shay!
Sarah says
I started doing The Bible Recap this year because of you. I am loving it and it has brought consistency and a plan to my intention/desire to read scripture daily. I so appreciate you sharing about it. I think your offer at the end here is so genuine and shows your heart. Thank you for doing this and being a light!
Abby Larson says
Love this! Thanks for sharing. One of my favorite Bible studies EVER is Seamless (Angie Smith). I’ve done it now 3 times I think with a few different groups. It connected so many dots for me on how the Bible is one continuous story. I grew up hearing different Bible stories and about different characters, but just never saw how it all tied together. I had so many “aha” moments and truly recommend it for anyone as a crash course. I’m doing The Bible Recap now and it’s connecting even more dots for me. I’m also leading The Armor of God (Priscilla Shirer) teen study with my 13-year-old and 10 girls from her school. It’s a great study. The teen version is still pretty advanced, though- I was hoping for simpler language and more relatable junior high/high school references. And it’s quite a bit of study work for them, in addition to school work. But it’s clicking after 3 weeks now, girls are gelling, girls are pretty much staying up on their independent study, moms are helping out too. It’s at least teaching them the value of independent study time and having prayer strategies. So great! Anyway, thanks for sharing your story and being so open about your faith. I point people to your blog often with a comment about how I admire and enjoy how you “show up”. Please keep doing it- you make such an impact! Thanks, Shay!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much for sharing these studies with our group. I am so so grateful for YOU! xx

I loved Seamless! Wonderful study and really connected the dots for me as Abby stated above! I need to do it again!
Kelly Wren says
“Seamless” is a GREAT starting place for someone just starting to study God’s word. I grew up in church and did this study with a new believer and we both learned and grew from this study. It is a great “flyover” of the entire Bible and will connect important dots for someone just starting to study.
Jenna says
Seamless is one of my favorites as well!

Great suggestions, Shay! Can I add something? I am not a fast reader (at all) so when I started I found reading the Bible plus all the things a little intimidating. I just read the Bible & would briefly write in a notebook things that stood out to me. For a first time reader my suggestion would be to start with the book of Mark. It’s a concise look at Jesus which is what the entire Bible points toward. Then I’d read it chronology (like Shay suggested) which will make the most sense.
Thanks for another great post, Shay💛

I love this!! Thank YOU for sharing!!

Probably my favorite post and topic. I love reading the Bible and it wasn’t until I discovered The Bible Recap 5 years ago, at age 43, that all the puzzle pieces started to fit. Reading the Bible in one year and in chronological order can seem incredibly daunting, but it has been the greatest commitment I have made and saw through. So much, I am in my 5th year and have no plans on stopping.
I would like to suggest a Journaling Bible. A Bible you can write in. I write extra prayers for my family or thoughts on the scripture that speak deeply to me with the dates. I love going back through years and seeing answered prayers, continual prayers and thought at the time.
Also, I decided four years ago, to switch up my Bible each year with one of my 3 different Bibles and roate them. Then when I pass, each of my children will have one of my Bibles with notes, dates, etc. Just something a little extra I wish I started 25 years ago when I got married.
Lastly, a discussion and questions I get from my teens constantly are about the Bible. How to study? What to study? What does it mean? Where do I start? How do you stick with it? How is it not boring? How can I be on “your level”? Will I ever love studying and understand like you? Why doesn’t mine look like so and so? ……
My answer to my kids, this is a journey you will take until your last breath. The Lord isn’t looking for perfection, He is looking for a relationship. None of us are perfect, but we’re being perfected daily. Sanctified. Made new…daily. You invest in you friendships, siblings, this family because you care. You do the same with your relationship with God. Talk to him daily. Professional athletes don’t become great at their sport over night, they practices for hours and years. Doctors don’t wake up doctors, they go to school for years and learn from people before them. My point to them is, it takes years to semi understand the Bible and you will still not fully know all there is. This is a journey. Just stay committed. Ask questions. Realize not every day is the Ah-ha revelation day. But, you are still learning and growing. Most importantly, don’t compare where you are in your journey and continue to talk to the Lord and read His Word. They way I study verses my husband, my friend, my pastor, are all different. Like in school, we all learn and receive information differently. My husband hates reading, he listens to You Version 90% of the time. I love physical books, extra historical facts and taking notes, so I do that. Some people really love teachers and extra input, Q& A, therefore a small group would be fabulous. Think about your learning style and try to go into that direction of learning.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well yes, yes, and YES! Thank YOU so much for sharing all of this! I really really appreciate everything you said here. xx

Hands down my favorite devotional is Songs of Jesus by Kathy and Tim Keller. It gets you through the Psalms in a year and is such a great start to prime the pump before I begin my time with the Lord in the mornings. My ESV study Bible is my go to translation. 🩷

Thanks for a great post, Shay!
Something that’s helped me is reading a devotional in the pick up line at my daughter’s school. It’s kind of a long wait, so I’ll read a devotional before reading something else on my kindle!
The people at my church have loved New Morning Mercies a daily devotional by Paul David Tripp. It’s SO good and gospel centered! I loved the Jackie Hill Perry one, too!
Erika Slaughter says
I agree with that comment above…Seamless is SUCH a good study and you’ll learn something no matter if you’re someone who’s never picked up the Bible or have been studying for years!
Sheaffer says
So many great tips to get people started!

Shay, how do you get your kids connected with reading the Bible?Do yall do a family devotional or reading time?My daughter is 9 and goes to a Christian school. She has a memory verse she has to memorize weekly so I help her with that. During December her and I read Luke nightly. We like to do it right before bed to calm us both down from a busy day. It doesn’t always get done nightly but we will catch up. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s a hard question to answer because I honestly don’t think there is a right or wrong way. Andrew and I both often reflect back on our parents doing their own quiet times, so we make sure our kids see our example too. Even if they aren’t awake every single morning and see us having our time in God’s word, they know we do. They see us on vacations, they see us on the weekend, they see our Bibles and studies on the kitchen table/in the suitcase. We talk about it, our kids know that mom and dad wake up early first for Bible study and second to workout (and never in reverse). I think setting that example quietly speaks loudly. We always pray at every meal/discuss things we’re praying for/people we’re praying over/etc. We buy them devotionals and studies as well. We don’t harp on them “doing them”, we kind of just subtly say “hey, I thought this sounded like you” and leave it in their room. More times than not, I can tell they’re reading them. I think it all adds up. Our kids know our hearts and our priorities just like I knew my parents and that made the biggest impression on me, so I’m prayerful it’s making one on them too.

I would also encourage looking into a local Bible Study in your city. Bible Study Fellowship is incredibly for anyone who wants to dig deeper into the word. My family has been involved with BSF for 11 years now and it’s been life changing for us. It’s interdenominational & EVERYONE is invited to attend. You come as you are whether you’re new to scripture or have studied all your life, you’re welcome. The children’s program is phenomenal too. It’s a worldwide Bible Study. I highly recommend anyone who longs for community to discuss, bring their questions, and fall deeper in love with God’s word.
Cindi says
I was coming on to recommend Bible Study Fellowship, too! BSF’s layered learning process is perfect for someone brand new to the Bible, as well as seasoned students of scripture. And BSF offers classes for babies, children and students, too. First layer, we read and answer questions on our own. Then we gather and discuss those questions in a group setting. (Groups meet in person or on Zoom.) And the last two learning layers are listening to a lecture and then reading notes provided by BSF. It’s truly the best study I’ve ever done! And I’ve done many Beth Moore studies, the Bible Recap and church led yearly reading plans. I think studying scripture with others, in a group of like-minded people, holds me accountable and teaches me even more, as we share with each other what we’re learning.
And I highly recommend Shay’s current devotional by Jackie Hill Perry! But as Jackie writes “…this work isn’t the meal; it’s the appetizer.” Devotionals are great to start our mornings, but quoting Jackie again: “The Scriptures are the meal and Christ is its bread. Go to Him and be filled.”
Lisa D says
I love this! I’ve been reading Jesus Calling for years. My favorite Bible study has been The Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer. Oh my goodness it’s so, so good! I’m currently reading a devotional booklet for caregivers that Guideposts sent called Strength & Grace. I think there are many awesome Bible studies available, just get started 😊
Paula Hobbs says
For me, I found that reading the Bible to myself was a bit hard (trying to sound out the names, etc) so, I use the audio version of the You Version Bible App and follow along in my Bible each morning during my quiet time. Maybe this tip will be helpful to someone else. I always love hearing suggestions from you and your followers.
KC says
Same here. I started doing that last year and it was a game changer for me!
Clary says
I started doing a daily quiet time in 2015, thanks to one of Shay’s posts at that time! I started with The One Year Bible study that takes you through the entire Bible chronologically. I’ve done that one a few years and then did The Bible Recap for the first time last year. Both are GREAT guides. I also really like the Seamless study by Angie Smith. Like Abby said, it makes you see how the Bible is connected from beginning to end. I learned so much from that study.
But mainly I will say that spending time in God’s Word every day has changed my life. Period. However you want to start, just start! Do it today. The Lord will bless your effort to get to know Him more.
Brittney says
I have struggled so much over the years to read the Bible daily. I would always do well for a few days, then fall off the wagon. I’m finally reading daily and digging in and enjoying scripture, and I totally attribute that to accountability! At the beginning of the year, our small group decided we would pick a book of the Bible and read one chapter a day. Then, we all text the group a verse that stood out to us. It has been so fun seeing other people’s perspectives. Plus, it brings up struggles that we can then encourage each other through. It’s been totally life changing!
Melissa says
Thanks for this post, Shay! I also love The Bible Recap and have done it three times. The daily podcasts are also available as YouTube videos, and are really enjoyable. I recommend them. I was able to meet Tara Leigh when she was in our town last fall, and she was exactly as you’d imagine her to be from listening to podcasts and watching the videos. Such a special person. They also offer other great Bible studies available besides the Recap.
Colleen says
Love all of this and I’m so happy your readers are interested in learning more about God through the Bible. I would like to add a suggestion for new-ish believers: try reading How (Not) to Read the Bible by Dan Kimball first. It gives a really solid background of what the Bible is/isn’t and how to approach it (especially considering how many verses are quoted out of context to support anti-Christian arguments). Readers may approach the Bible with a more confident perspective and understanding if they have that book in their back pocket first!
K.K. says
Love this post. Most important investment we can make is this one right here. It’s nice to be reminded! Also, finally doing Bible Recap as well, and I’m loving it!
One additional study to consider if someone is in a season of trial or grief: Why?: Trusting God When You Don’t Understand
by Anne Graham Lotz. This was so powerful for me in a difficult time.
Mandi says
My best advice for those intimidated by the Bible or who may have a hard time understanding it is to read the Jesus Storybook Bible! I was in church my whole life but it wasn’t until I had kids and started reading this children’s Bible to them that it all started to make sense 🙂 I am on my fourth time through the Bible (three with Bible Recap) and having the basics from the children’s Bible made a huge difference in my understanding.
Charman says
I would also recommend She Reads Truth (https://shereadstruth.com/). Their reading plans are easy to follow, and they produce beautiful resources. The weekly podcast and the daily devotionals add value and clarity to the reading. Don’t miss the comment threads. It is so moving to read insights from women all over the world who are reading God’s word together. Their Lent reading plan just started yesterday.
Pamela Garrett says
I love all your faith based blog posts…I would love you to do one on how you organize your prayer life. I want to pray for all requests but either forget or get so many that it would take all day…I just don’t have a good way to do it…Also I did the Ruth Bible Study by Kelly Minter and it was the best one I have ever done.
Mix and Match Mama says
I personally just write them down in a basic old notebook. You can make categories “family”/”cancer”/etc or just keep lists. I go back through my lists and add notes, mark things out and add new ones. I personally think simple is better for me.

The Bible Recap is amazing. I so appreciate you sharing it years ago. I am 65 and have been a Christian for YEARS, but as I sat through church I usually felt like I was understanding things for the first time. Now thanks to you & The Bible Recap – I have an understanding of what our pastor is talking about from beginning to end. It allows it to sink in so much deeper. Who knew as we studied the Book of Job – I’d have already really understood it. That’s one of the books I always scratched my head over. You recommending this and me following through made me for the first time really feel like I could finally start to forgive myself for some of my many mistakes. Thank you for for being a great leader towards all the important things – skin and hair care, clothes, organization, and Jesus.

A couple of my favorite devotionals that I just read over and over again are:
Be Still 90 Devotions for the Hopeful Heart by Cleere Cherry
Seeing God in the Sweet Ordinary by Becky Strahle
They are quick reads that I do every day!

Thank you so much for this post! I have followed you for years, started out looking for book recommendations, my second favorite part of all of your posts, so hard to choose a favorite! That led to the recipes and travel, and now I have 4 little boys of my own so all the holiday traditions and fun things you do with your family and friends give me great inspiration for my fam here in MN. My MOST favorite thing about your site is your strong faith and introducing me to TBR. Last year when our little guy was diagnosed with a birth defect at 20 weeks pregnant, I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat, couldn’t take care of my 3 healthy boys. I just needed more Jesus in my life everyday and to help with all the unknown and anxiety. I could not believe in my 30 years as a Christian I had never read the bible completely. It was the best blessing, I swear my anxieties and worries about our little man melted off when I was listening to Tara Leigh, and diving into the WORD. I never thought I would be able to keep up with reading, with how crazy life is with 4 littles, and here I am, on my second trip around this year and I am learning so much more. I love everything about TBR and how well things are explained. I even recruited by mom and husband to start this year, because I couldn’t stop talking about it last year and we have our own little D-group. Our little Gus just turned one, and he is a healthy little miracle. I am so grateful for all your posts, but especially the TBR ones. Thank YOU Shay!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh Julie, I am so excited about your comment! Thank YOU for sharing this with me!! This just means the world to me. Sending you so much love. xx

I always love a good reminder that this is such a life-changing habit, to say the least. A couple of things that have helped me over the years as well is to also listen to the Bible (I love the ESV app). I listen as I get ready in the morning, as I walk back from taking our son to school, etc. It’s also a pretty painless way to memorize without even realizing it! And Jackie Hill Perry recorded the entire Bible on that app, too. It’s free for one year for anyone living overseas! And I don’t think it’s very expensive to buy it.
One thing I recently started doing with our kids that has been really fun is to introduce them to some of our favorite Bible teachers on YouTube. It’s surprising how much you can find on there now! It not only helps us to understand the text, but it’s also been great to see how the Lord uses all different kinds of personalities and styles to help us understand his Word. It’s something we look forward to every night now!
KC says
I have tried so many times to read the Bible but it wasn’t until 4 years ago when I heard of the Bible Recap that I read the Bible in its entirety and actually understood what I was reading. And everytime I read it, year after year, I learn something new. It has been a life changer in my relationship with Christ! I recommend it to everyone. Another tip I started doing last year is I get my physical Bible and then I turn on the Bible app and have them read while I follow along in my Bible. I found that sometimes I spent so much time trying to pronounce names, tribes, cities, etc that I missed the point of the whole chapter. Now I can follow along, highlight and make notes while they are reading it correctly to me.
Alison says
A gal from a Bible study gifted me Jesus Calling 15 years ago and while I have others, that one remains my favorite and the one I still reach for often! Sarah Young had such a gift with her words and her biblical wisdom. Several of her books take up space on my desk. I welcomed the Bible Recap into my routine last year after hearing you share about it a few times but I must’ve overlooked that there’s a podcast, too! Looking that up now!
Erin says
The best thing I think anyone can do before opening their Bible if to first pray and ask Holy Spirit to bring understanding and to, must importantly, reveal Jesus. 🔥
Kerrie Hofstad says
Yes, to this!!! I just recently realized how much more the Lord reveals to us in our studies when we ask Him to! Ask Him to remove anything that would block or hinder us from seeing what He wants us to see. Also, my pastor says “look for Jesus and you will see Him on every page”. It’s all about Him! I’ve been in church all my life but at 43 I’m learning so much I never knew. Shay, thank you for sharing Jesus. I hope I get to stand by you in Heaven when the Lord tells you how many people have come to Him, because of you.
Lois says
Along with other suggestions already given, may I suggest The Child’s Story Bible by Catherine F. Vos? Written especially for children but it can be helpful used by an adult, especially one who is new to Bible study.

Best Bible study EVER is Seamless!! I recommend to everyone I talk to!

I have loved studying from an ESV Study Bible. Having a plan has helped me the most to be consistent in being in God’s Word! I really enjoy “A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace.” I have found them to be solid biblically and theologically! You can find their plans on The Bible app and then listen to a very short commentary of the day’s reading on their podcast. If you want hard copies of their studies, check out their website.

I used to read Jesus Calling on the daily and bought/recommended it often to others, but no longer do after reading this article and feeling convicted. Also this website has been excellent in answering biblical questions for me…they have a podcast as well!

Love this post and all the great comments! I’ve screenshot the books recommended from you all. Right now I’m studying the Book of Psalms and the devotional I’m reading John Greco’s “The Ascent, The Devotional Adventure Through the Book of Psalms”. And the ladies at church have started a Bible Study on “The Bible in 52 Weeks “ by Dr. Kimberly D. Moore. We’re really enjoying this. In the mornings, I make my coffee, my Bible is beside my chair, pen and paper (I like to write down the scriptures to read later) and settle in. It starts my day with the sunrise and saying prayers for thankfulness and gratitude. Thank you, Shay, and all the ladies here! Love you all!

I love this post and all the comments!
This year I started doing the Bible in a Year podcast with Fr Mike, and it is SO wonderful! It’s easy to understand, and I’m learning so much! It is so inspiring and such a delight. 🙂

A couple of my favorite studies are Priscilla Shirer’s Armor of God and Beth Moore’s Believing God. A devotional book that I liked was Ellie Holcomb’s Fighting Words. My very favorite way to study God’s Word, though, is to pick a passage and read until a word or phrase stands out, and then look it up on Blue Letter Bible and really swish it around in my brain. I can sometimes get days of “juice” out of one word!

Love this post so much!
Do you know where you can get the Bible personalized with a name on it, like your Bible? Thank you. Really enjoy your uplifting posts.

The Legacy Bible Rebinders can do that for you or many times Christian bookstores have a place inside where they can do it too. (I bet even Etsy offers this service!)

Great post. Thank you. I am doing the Bible recap, thanks to you, and loving it. I started in January.

I started reading the Bible in full for the first time in 2023. Before every new book, I watch the recap about it from Bible Project on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVfwlh9XpX2Y_tQfjeln9QA). The recaps are less than 10 minutes, beautifully animated, and so insightful so you have context for what your’e about to read.

I did Kelly Minters Bible study with a group at my church last year, it was wonderful. The supplemental videos she had were so good! She does such a great job explaining things and stories in the Bible. She is a wonderful speaker!

I love this post and topic! My favorite devotional is also Jesus Calling. Since Easter is approaching thought I would share that she has one for Easter too, “Jesus Calling for Easter” by Sarah Young.
Kandi Sullivan says
Living by the Book by Howard and William Hendricks is also a great book to teach you how to study the Bible. It teaches you and then gives practical examples and exercises. My pastor recommended it to me.
