Oatmeal is one of my favorite things to make and eat in the morning. It’s simple, it’s hot and it’s versatile.
I’m always getting requests for more breakfast recipes for busy families, so here you go…basic oatmeal topped four different ways.
On a crazy morning, all you do is whip up one batch of your favorite oatmeal or steel cut oats and then each of your kiddos can top it any way they like. Perfect.
For this topping, I just placed a handful of shredded coconut and macadamia nuts in a clean, dry skillet and toasted them up about 2 minutes together. Then, sprinkle the toasted goodness on top of your oatmeal. Simple and done!
This topping is such a cinch! Just sprinkle a handful of butterscotch chips and walnut pieces on top of hot oatmeal. The chips will get all melty and delicious running through your breakfast. Love this!
A dash of cinnamon and a few sliced strawberries is all you need for this simple topping and then you’re out the door to start your day!
A handful full of blueberries and a little lemon zest…perfection. Lemon and blueberries were made for each other.
That’s it! Next time, don’t buy the flavored oatmeal…instead, buy the regular kind and then jazz up the toppings with your kiddos. Let them mix and match it any way they like.

We do plain oatmeal and add in a TBSP of Honey with 1/4c of fruit that is a nice twist on the plain stuff as well, definitely will be trying the strawberry and cinnamon twist 🙂

These look delicious! I buy the plain oatmeal and add banana slices that are a little overripe for sweetness, then cinnamon and toasted sliced almonds.

Buying butterscotch chips is a must! I LOVE oatmeal and have been trying to come up with some different twists on mix-ins other than my typical craisins or blueberries. Can't wait to try these!

I only buy plain oatmeal now because it's so easy to create different flavors! My favorite is peanut butter and banana. Stir a spoonful of peanut butter into the hot oatmeal and top with ripe banana slices. Add a little honey or maple syrup for extra sweetness if you want. Sometimes I *accidentally* drop in a few chocolate chips too… 🙂

Love these oatmeal topping suggestions! Two of my favorites are: (1) diced apple with chopped mixed nuts and (2) diced oranges with chopped mixed nuts. The salt from the nuts and the sweetness from the fruits are a great combo. Yum!

Have you ever tried a touch of freshly grated ginger or even ginger powder in your oatmeal! Sounds potent but it's really great

Plain oatmeal is all I buy anymore. When I'm feeling healthy, I eat my oatmeal with only a banana to sweeten it. My daughter likes hers with a little brown sugar and cinnamon. Even after adding the brown sugar, it's still healthier than the pre-sweetened instant kind!

I love cinnamon with bananas sliced very thin….and I love a spoonful of brown sugar added too!! Yummy!!!!!

Love peanut butter and a little brown sugar. The protein in the peanut butter balances the carbs for me. Also love plain Fage Greek yogurt and a drizzle of maple syrup. The yogurt adds protein and makes it really creamy!

I like to put the new health craze-coconut oil, along with cinnamon, blueberries, and ground chia seeds, in plain oatmeal. I have added yogurt, and walnuts as well. It may be overboard on the healthy items though! HA
