Hello! Hello! Happy Thursday to you!!
Listen, this week has been busy. Busy and hot. When it’s hot outside, that makes being busy that much harder. Thankfully, a nice cold front is blowing in today and I think (hopefully!!), we have seen the end of the hot weather here in North Texas.
I’ve had one of those weeks where I’ve been asking myself “Why did I agree to this? Why didn’t I say no?”…so, next week, I’m going to work on editing down my life. I don’t like feeling over-committed and anxious about a busy schedule…we’ll see if I make it happen or not ;).
Day 246: The carpool line is 30 minutes at Kensington’s school…I have discovered that a good latte and something to read is the key. I really have also learned to love this down time…I’m forced to just sit there in the quiet of my car and relax…a much needed break most days.
Day 247: So on this day, we walked to pick up K from school and walked home…it was 99 degrees outside. By the time we got home, the three of us were worn out. I really think we’ll love walking when the weather is cooler…but on this day…we sat here and watched Barbie and didn’t move for an hour!
Day 248: One kid was in school and the other was at Erika’s house, so I indulged and went to Hobby Lobby with a Pumpkin Spice Latte…it was pure bliss.
Day 249: Saturdays. Oh the possibilities.
Day 250: How can I not have a great day with this cutie in my backseat?!?!
Day 251: First day of tennis this fall! Our little team did such a great job! It was so hot but they were such troopers!!
Day 252: In honor of my Starbucks post on Tuesday, Smith and I had breakfast there that morning. He ordered a Cotton Candy Frappuccino off of the secret menu thanks to your suggestion!
On another note, yesterday, the minute Kensington got into the car after school, she burst into tears. Apparently something happened at school that really upset her and she had held it in all day long. I cannot tell you how many times I have had bad days and the minute I see my mom or hear her voice on the phone, I fall apart. This was a first for us…a hard first…being a mama is tough some days…and yesterday, when my sweet girl was sobbing in the car, was a tough day. Today is a new day…and we’re praying, a much happier one.

Shay,
I read your blog every morning as I drink my cup of coffee. I can thank you for my shopping obsessions, Fall decorated home, and clarisonic (sp?) face brush, but most of all I just wanted you to know that I love reading your daily adventures! I feel like I have a friend up North. (fellow Texan) Your family, home, and life are a morning treat!
Love,

You should read Lysa TerKeurst's new book, The Best Yes. It looks like a life changer with evaluating what gets a yes and what gets a no.

I'm so sorry she had a hard day… it's so incredibly painful as a mom when your baby is hurting because of the way they've been treated by others. I hope today is the best day ever for her!!

I am feeling a bit over commited also. It must be something about the school year starting that makes me always feel that way.Poor K! I always boo hooed every day when I came home the first week of school every year all the way through senior year… It was bad! I am not even sure why I was that way! Change is hard for me. I'll be thinking about K the rest of the week as she goes to school!

Hi Shay, I love reading your blog every day. I am so sorry Kensington had a rough day. Those kind of moments with the kids we love break my heart.
Do you think you could edit a prayer for 9/11 into your blog? You always have such inspiring words for the hard moments in our lives and I opened your blog expecting to see something commemorating our country today.
It is obviously your choice and you don't have to. But for readers of our beautiful country and for those who lost someone special, I thought it would be a beautiful place to write something to bless those gone and bless our country.
Either way God bless and have a beautiful day.

Hi Shay, Have you heard of Lysa Terkeurst's new book, "The Best Yes" I know you enjoy reading and her book walks you through having your best yes answers and not overwhelming your schedule. She quotes, "An overwhelmed schedule often leads to an underwhelmed soul." "Never is a woman so fulfilled as when she chooses to underwhelm her schedule so she can let God overwhelm her soul." I recently had a liver transplant at age 25 in February. Due to my immune system being suppressed I have had to learn to slow down and only say YES to the things God wants me to be doing. I thought I would share this with you.. it is an incredible book on learning to only say yes to the things God has planned for your day. Thanks for your daily blog and encouragement. -Lisa Barker @lbarker6

Hey Shay,
I was wondering if you ever experience anxiety or depression, and if so, how you deal with it? Do you use your faith to get by or have you ever had to get more help? I know that mental health issues are so taboo, but I am really struggling right now and I love reading your blog because you always have such amazing words of wisdom.

I've never commented, but wanted to start by saying I loved your blog about your hair last month. After 36 years I have told my friends and family I am ready to embrace my curls. (Especially since my youngest has really curly hair and everyone asks where she gets it from!) 🙂 So I ordered your recommended products and am still in the learning curve of fixing my hair, but I am so much happier! It's saving tons of time and I feel more "natural". The reason I wanted to comment today though was from the start of your post. It made me immediately think of a new book by Lysa Terkuest that she's using as an on-line bible study through her ministry Proverbs31. It's called "The Best Yes". I thought it might be something you would enjoy! 🙂

I have a 21 year old daughter, but I will never forget when she came into my high school classroom one day after a difficult day in first grade. I too had a hard day as one of my special ed students had passed away. We just sat in the chair in my classroom, her on my lap and we both cried. Times like that, as well as the fun memories, are what bind mothers and daughters together. Kensington knows she can rely on you. And yes, at the age of almost 50, my mom is still my best friend. She was my matron of honor 23 years ago. I always knew she is who I wanted standing by me in my most important times. Debbie K from northern IN

Shay, have you ever done a shade of shay on your gym routine/workout program for the week? I'd love to know what your regimen is! Thanks!!

Praying Miss K has a better day at school today. Being a girl can be tough at times. Especially an emotional one who wears her heart on her sleeve. I know from experience. 🙂

My sister taught Kindergarten for years, and I remember her saying that if the child didn't cry the first day they were crying by the end of the second week. She said by then they were just so exhausted, and overwhelmed. Praying that Kensington has a wonderful weekend, and feels refreshed to start a new week. 🙂 Dawn

Macy, you sweet girl, you are not a mistake! Don't listen to those people. I know it's easier said than done, but be you, find friends that fill your heart with joy. Also, talk to someone you trust about your feelings. Xo

Macy-You are NOT a mistake!! You are one of God's children and He does NOT make mistakes. Try to talk to a supportive adult, and I will keep you in my thoughts.

You are not a mistake. People can be mean. Can you talk to a teacher, parent or somebody close to you?

I read periodically, and don't usually comment. I hope you don't mind my suggestion, and take it in the spirit in which it is meant. If your daughter typically wears her chest buckle on her carseat that low, you should readjust. It is supposed to be essentially at nipple height on the chest. Carseat.org and other sources probably have some info for you. If that's not how she typically wears it, just ignore me. With it low, there's a risk of sliding out underneath.
