It’s a day in the life of us.
Occasionally, I do one of these posts and they’re always really popular. And listen…I get it! These are my favorite posts to read on other people’s blogs too. I always find it so fascinating to read about the daily life of a complete stranger. #imweirdlikethat #weirdosunite
Another reason I love doing these posts though is because these are my absolute favorite to go back and reread later. I love remembering these little days right here that I get to spend with my kiddos.
Before we begin, two disclaimers:
1. I always pick these days randomly on my calendar and let them turn into what they are.
2. For some reason, when I went back through this day, I’m a hot mess in every picture. I either just took a shower or needed a shower. It was just one of those days.
Good morning. My alarm went off at 4:40 AM. I walked past Andrew already up and doing his quiet time when I went to fetch my coffee.
Robe, check. Cozy blanket, check. Coffee, check. A lot of work to do early in the morning, check, check.
Before I dive into work, I always do my quiet time. I’m halfway through my One Year Bible and LOVING IT! I think I’ll even do it again next year.
My company every morning.
Double checked my blog posts for the day. Don’t you love the shark on my monitor? #boymom
At 6:30, I emptied the dishwasher and made breakfast…a cold-pressed juice and toast with almond butter and flax for the win.
Someone had a bad dream the night before and was in our bed. Two days a week over the summer, I wake them up and we head to the gym…this was one of those days. Kiddos up at 7:00.
(And you can see my Week in Workouts post HERE.)
I woke up the sisters too.
The next hour was a blur of breakfast, bed making, getting dressed and out the door at 8:00.
They wore their swimsuits to the gym so we could swim right after.
At the gym and loading my stuff in my locker.
Ha! I took three selfies while we worked out…and two of them looked like I was dying. My Wednesday morning class is HARD! Love working out with my friends though…that makes everything better :).
I showered at the gym, changed into my swimsuit, grabbed the kids and we headed to the grocery store to get lunch before the pool. Some days we bring our lunch from home, some days we order lunch at the pool and some days, we grab stuff at the grocery store on our way. This was one of those days.
At the pool with Meg…my summer BFF :). Meg and I joke that we’re besties during the summer because we see each other every day all summer long and then really don’t see each other the rest of the year. We’re like summer framily at the pool…and that’s one of the main reasons we love going to the pool during the day instead of just swimming alone at home…all of the new people you meet! I adore Meg.
Let’s do this pool!
The best part of the day? The cannon ball contest!
Waiting their turn for the cannon ball contest.
Smith!
Whew! At home right at 1:50, Ashby down for a nap, big kids “resting” in their rooms (they color/read/play with toys…just have quiet time while Ashby naps). I’m doing a quick load of laundry in my swimsuit.
Refueling for work at 2:00. Water, crackers and spicy hummus while I blog, write cookbooks, plan vacations, pay bills, answer emails, write recipes and all of that other stuff that comes from my job(s). I really try and scale back over the summer while my kiddos are home and not in school. I only get to do this “young kids at home” once in my lifetime, so I must prioritize!
At 3:50, Andrew came home to work from his home office and stay with the girls while Smith and I went to golf lessons. Ha! Love this sweet boy so much!
Golf was over at 5:00 and Smith and I headed home. The next 45 minutes was a complete blur: I made dinner (burgers!), helped a customer plan a Caribbean vacation over the phone, and once a summer, we have sleepovers with the Slaughter kids, so Smith headed out for boy time at Erika’s while Ebby Lee joined us for a girls night.
After dinner, we let the girls pick our evening activities and they said first, ride the golf cart to Starbucks for dessert and then swim. Girls on a golf cart, check!
All of us on the golf cart!
Headed inside for our treats!
Back home, the girls put on their swimsuits and Andrew watched them swim while I folded laundry inside…
My Sox were playing the Rangers, so I watched baseball while I folded laundry. Everyone note the score please ;).
After laundry was put up, I went out back to see what they were doing…the girls had paused swimming for the swing set…
…and then they jumped right back in!
After swimming and showers, I played a speech therapy game with Ashby. Now that Ashby has been home 18 months, we have started speech therapy once a week. She is doing such a great job with her language but English as a second language is tough, so we want her to have all of the resources she needs to thrive before kinder starts in two years. She loves her speech therapist because they play games that she gets to bring home and play with us. Right now, we’re working on consonant clusters and pronouncing certain letters at the end of words (like toad instead of saying “toe”).
The girls picked a movie to watch before bed…
…and after a shower (because holy moly, I needed one!), this guy and I watched one of our favorite shows together.
And that my friends, is a day in the life of us.
Random, uneventful, full of outdoor activities and busy.
And for grins, here are some other day in the life posts from years past:
Amen.
See you tomorrow friends. xo

I’m with you–I love these posts too! I just like to see the daily happenings of people! Random question: Where did you get your round table that was in your breakfast room? I’m looking at a round table for my dining room and need a 72″ table–Restoration Hardware is the only place I’ve found that has round tables that big. Thank you!

Day in the Life posts are definitely a favorite to read for me! I am so happy that Ashby is loving speech. Nikki is amazing with articulation and it’s so fun to watch her work her magic (all the while the kids never know they are actually working on anything)! I’m so excited to see all of Ashby’s progress!!!
Lizzie says

WOW! You sure packed it in! How much do you schedule your day vs. how much just sort of happens? Do you set a block of time for gym, swimming, lunch, etc. This last year I have managed to consistently wake up every morning and do a three mile walk with the dog which was a huge change/accomplishment for me the night owl. I get distracted on random projects, like when it’s time to blog I am setting up social posts, fixing my slider, etc. when I probably should spend an hour just working on the post and move on. I am so impressed with your time management skills – I feel like you should teach a course. I just started getting into Hal Elrod’s The Miracle Morning which lists the things you should do to start your day off right and it seems like you are incorporating most of them. Maybe that is the trick!

I’m curious where you found the area rug in the movie room. I’ve been searching for that color, but having a tough time finding it.

Love these posts! My favorite. Question – do you still do your everyday brownie or have another treat? 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Most days I do! On this day, I had a cookie at Starbucks instead :). But most days, I do have a little brownie with my TV :).

I love day in the life posts too! I mostly love reading other people’s because I’m nosy but I also love to do them as well, though they take a lot of effort to remember to actually take pictures 🙂 haha. Love your day! It sounds like a perfect summer day.
Hannah Hardy says
Love when you do these posts! I’m going to look into that one-year bible you mentioned. I’ve been wanting to read all the way through and that looks perfect!
Loren says
My favorite posts! #weirdosunite 🙂 What beach/pool bag are you using?
Deirdre says
Love your blogs Shay. You have a beautiful family. Question. In your dinner picture I noticed the girls all having a hamburger, but no bun. Is this how you always serve burgers or does it depend on what has been eaten earlier in the day? I was impressed the girls would go bunless, my family would be like “we want buns” Lol
Mix and Match Mama says
We almost always eat our burgers open-face (because of the toppings), so even on plain old cheeseburger nights, we do it out of habit.
Karleigh Johnson says
Shay!
I have to ask, but feel free to tell me to mind my own business or privately message me if you want. Just out of curiosity, how do you find time intimacy with your husband? It’s evident that you are so extremely busy, and I just don’t know how you do it all! I’m a recently married woman with no kids and sometimes I don’t even feel like I have the time!
Lynsey says
I feel like such a stalker, but it is so helpful at times to see how others live. I love learning from you. Two things: 1) Is that a rolling hamper basket? ; 2) Do you naturally wake up so early and need less sleep? Seems like you run on about 6 hours of sleep a night. I’m super jeally, if so, and have you always been this way or did you have to train yourself? Tips are much appreciated in this arena.
Kendra says
Love reading about your day!! I don’t think I could ever get tired of reading your blog! I LOVE it and just adore you and your family! Thank you for sharing with all of us! You are a blessed Mama, a hard working Mama and a Mama that knows how to add some fun into your day! xoxo

What kind of bread do you Use for your toast?
Meredith Briggs says
