Two weeks ago, I shared my favorite makeup and the most frequently asked question on that post was…tell us about your skin care routine. So, today…my favorite skin care.
I am a skin care junkie. I always feel like the more you take care of your skin, the less makeup you have to wear…so, I’m pretty religious about my routine. I also invest in quality products because I do feel like you get what you pay for in this department annnnd…they last a long time, so even though one bottle might be expensive, you only buy maybe one or two a year, so when divided out per daily use, it’s not that much.
Other things to note:
1: When I turned 30, I started getting regular microderms and chem peels at my dermatologist’s office. I was getting them done monthly, but lately, I’ve been doing them much further apart (because I just don’t have the time). The last time I had microderm was June and a chem peel was July (so, I’m way due for more). The dermatologist does different peels depending on my skin condition that day, but most of the time they’re salicylic peels.
2: If you’ve read my blog for long, you know that I’m a huge advocate for routine skin checks. I’ve had some very scary stuff taken off of my back because when I was a teen, I was an idiot and lived in tanning beds. And now…I have three very ugly scars to prove it. So, I get two skin checks every year to prevent skin cancer. If you don’t read anything else today, read this: MAKE A SKIN CHECK APPOINTMENT! Skin cancer is so scary and can often be prevented with just routine checks. Make an appointment TODAY!
3: My skin can break out like nobody’s business and for me, it’s always a result in not drinking enough water and eating unhealthy food. All of a sudden, I’ll get a big zit and think dang, where did that come from and then I’ll remember…oh yeah, I just came off a vacation where I ate a lot of yummy, cheesy, rich, food and didn’t drink enough water…so for me, diet and clear skin go hand in hand.
So, I opened my cabinets and pulled out exactly what I use for my routine. Please, please, please share your skin secrets in the comment section! I eat this stuff up!!! My grandmother and mom have beautiful skin and I know it’s because they’re also religious about products and such…so, please, the more tips for us, the better! Please share!
This is what I love:
As far as face washes go, this right here is my fave. Good old fashioned, purchased at the grocery store coconut oil. I keep a jar in my pantry for cooking and a jar in my bathroom for a multitude of reasons: sunburns, dry skin, dry lips and best of all, makeup remover! All you do is rub a little amount of this on your face (including eye makeup) and then wipe it off with a damp towel and not only will all of your makeup come off, but it leaves your face feeling moisturized and not dried out and tight. Coconut oil is my favorite face wash!
In the morning, my routine is to wash my face with just a little water and a drop of coconut oil and then I apply these products:
SK-II Repair C Serum//Eye Cream//Rodan+Fields AM Moisturizer
So, I’ve tried a ton of vitamin C serums and this one is the only one I’ve found that doesn’t make my face red. My face is easily irritated and this serum never irritates it. I put a pea-sized amount over my clean skin every morning before moisturizing. Read the reviews…it’s a favorite of many!
After my serum, I apply a little eye cream and a daily moisturizer. Several years ago, Erika began working with Rodan+Fields and so I decided to try it. At first, I looked online and told her what I wanted but she encouraged me to use their Solution Tool and it told me to use something completely different, so I did…and I’ve been a devotee ever since. Based on my Solution Tool, I use the Redefine Regimen and their eye cream (I do not use the toner or face wash since I use this other stuff, I just use the AM & PM moisturizers). I love both of these moisturizers because they’re thick and creamy…so my face feels really hydrated. It’s thick but rubs right into my face without leaving residue…my skin just feels so moisturized and wonderful. To order Rodan+Fields, you need a consultant, so to use Erika too, email her at alittlebitofeverything83@yahoo.com. She can answer your questions and hook you up with these products (or talk to you about becoming a consultant).
And finally, I top everything off with my Clinque SPF because even though there is SPF in my AM cream, I just realllly want to make sure I have enough coverage so I use this one because it also doubles as a makeup primer (which is why I also listed it on my favorite makeup products too!).
At night, I always wash my face with coconut oil and then apply the following products:
Night Repair Serum//Eye Cream//Rodan+Fields PM Moisturizer//Retin-A
So, I kept reading about this cult favorite night repair serum by Estee Lauder and decided to try it…and now, I’m obsessed. I’ve been using this for a year now and just started my second bottle in October. It lasts forever because you only use a tiny little amount. I apply a pea-sized drop on my clean face and then apply Rodan+Fields PM Moisturizer along with their eye cream and then finish with prescription strength Retin-A that I get from my dermatologist. The women in my family agree…nothing is better than good old-fashioned Retin-A. I started using this when I was probably 20 (not while I was pregnant though) and it’s a miracle worker. A tiny little pea-sized amount on my face after everything else works wonders. You can buy products with Retin-A in them…but I like just straight Retin-A. My dermatologist always tells me that I can’t just use it without a moisturizer though because it’s drying, so you need all of the other benefits from your night cream to go along with it.
So, that’s my daily routine. On top of that stuff, I frequently use these products too:
Dr. Dennis Gross Glow Pads//Clarisonic//Bobbi Brown Radiance Scrub//GlamGlow Gravity Mask
So, I’ve only mentioned my love for Dr. Dennis Gross Glow Pads four hundred million times on here. These little tanning towels for your face are my FAVORITE! I use them once a week for just a little color. I use one wipe after washing my face and then let it dry a minute before proceeding with my nighttime routine. I think it takes a few hours for them to work, so I always use one right before bed and that way, when you wake up, your face looks a little more tan. I mean…I ADORE these! They wear off after a few days (more if you’re really scrubbing your face), so I will apply one and then skip my Clarisonic for two days just to stretch it out. I only use them once a week but you could use them more often. Speaking of my Clarisonic, this is one of my favorite gifts to give because everyone loves them (even guys!). I use mine about 4 or 5 times a week. It just really gets all of your makeup and such off of your face. I just add a basic little cleanser like Cetaphil on mine and go.
My favorite little face scrub is Bobbi Brown’s Radiance Boost Scrub. It smells like a juicy orange and just lightly buffs and exfoliates. I probably use it once or twice a week. And then when I just want a good tightening mask, I use this GlamGlow Gravity Tightening Mask (maybe once a week).
Soooo…that’s what I use. What do you use? Give me your favorites! I love trying new stuff!!!
And, if you missed my makeup post…
…you can see it HERE.
Happy Tuesday friends!

I use retina also but I was told to use first then morsturize on top of that. I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing. Thank you so much!
Mix and Match Mama says
My derm said to use the Retin-A last…but I seriously doubt it really makes that big of a difference either way, right? I’m sure we’re both doing okay!
Lindsey Schubert says
For what it’s worth, I am an esthetician and the derm probably told you to do Retin-A last because if you do it first you can swipe leftover product too close into your eye area when you layer your other products over it. Retin-A too close to the eye hurts!
I would also recommend trying the St. Tropez face tanning lotion, you can get SO dark so easily and I think the color might last you longer than the DD Peel pads, just an option!
I would also highly recommend trying the Tarte BB 12-Hour Tinted Primer with Spf 30. It’s kinda like a 3-in-1 and I LOVE the coverage that it gives and it has a high spf!! You can wear it buy itself or pair it with your regular foundation routine and it will look flawless!!!
Crissy Talley says
Thank you for your recommendations! I use the Obagi system with the retina and it has you put the moisturizer on after the retina but I am not thrilled with their moisturizer and there is no moisturizer or eye cream for in the morning. I am almost 44 so working hard to keep youthful skin. Blessings
Crissy Talley says
Thank you!

I love this post! I’m always trying new serums so I’ll be checking out your a.m. And p.m. Serums next time I run out. I started using Paula’s choice skin care products last year and love them. They’re reasonably priced, too! I like the Redness relief and Resist line cleansers, toners, exfoliants and moisturizers. I order mine online, but I believe Nordstrom carries most of the products as well.
Sheaffer says
Love these posts! It’s like looking into a friend’s medicine cabinet (which is so fun)! I also love seeing what’s in people’s grocery carts. Ha! I’m going to have to pick up some coconut oil today!
Jenny says
I resisted the pull of Rodan+Fields for a long time, but finally got sucked in and now I adore it!
I use the Gentle Cream Wash, Night Renewing Serum, Night Cream and Eye Cream at night. I found an age spot on my face over the summer, so I sped to Sephora and bought the Murad skin lightening and age spot remover and that took care of the age spot, plus seemed to really brighten and tighten my skin. Now, I’m only using the Murad a couple of times a week. I also use the R+F Microdermabrasion Paste a couple of times a week. That’s the stuff that got me hooked on R+F! Love it!
emily @ a little bit of emily says
I really love Kielh’s Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque. I would use it about once or sometimes twice a week and could definitely tell a difference in how my skin looked. It lasts a really long time, too! I buy mine at Nordstrom, and they have a super fun holiday sampler with two other masques that I really want to try!
Erika Slaughter says
Eek! Give me all the makeup and skincare posts! I love reading these. I’m gonna head to the store today to get some Coconut Oil. I usually take my makeup off with Cetaphil but I’m so intrigued!
Asher Davies says
I used to use Cetaphil until my sister sent me an article telling me how terrible it is for your skin! I stopped using it immediately and started using Go-To Skincare range by Zoe Foster (not sure if she posts internationally). I recently ran out of the cleanser and went back to a leftover bottle of Cetaphil I had in the cupboard (until my Go-To order arrived). I could almost instantly tell the difference in my skin – it was dry and dull. The second I went back to Go-To, my skin was so much better!
Mailyn Wolske Mendoza says
Through Younique, we have a wonderful, oxygenating, bamboo charcoal face mask. It drawseems impurities from your pores for a deep clean. I use it once or twice a week for a deep clean. My husband is a mechanic and uses it to remove the grease, oil and salt (Ohio living!) from his pores.
Jenn Mills says
Love this post.
I, too use coconut oil on my face especially if I’m wearing waterproof mascara. I use Arbonne (Swiss Company) for my face wash, am & pm moisturizers. I have have a deep cleansing mask that I use once a week and a hydrating mask when my face feels dry. Both by Arbonne. I might need to try that Estée Lauder night repair.
Kacy says
I’m a license aesthetician and cosmetologist. AVEDA trained now for over 10 years. Taking care of your skin is so so important. Drinking lots of water is crucial, it flushes out impurities and adds hydration to your skin. Thru the years I’ve used Mary Kay (still love) Rodan & Fields (not crazy about but everybody’s skin is different) I now use a product formulated in Germany called, BABOR!!! Hands down, it’s AH- MAE- ZING! They have several formulations for different skin types. My skin neck and decollete has NEVER looked so good and I’m 34! I also get regular hydro facials and exfoliate 2x’s a week!! Coconut oil is the BEST for everything! ????
Katie Williams says
Great post! Have you heard about or tried BeautyCounter? I am considering trying it because I love that it’s all natural and free of toxins, but curious if it helps with skin clearing. The makeup looks fabulous too!
Becky says
Hi Katie –
I have been using Beautycounter for two years and my skin has never been better. I would be happy to answer any questions you have!
KimW says
Becky which products do you recommend? I have looked into this line since they started selling it at Target but am not sure which ones to try.
Becky says
Hi Kim –
I currently use the Rejuvinating Line (their anti-aging line_ as well as the body line for myself and the kids line for all three of my kids. One of my favorite products is their charcoal mask. It has worked wonders on my skin. You can feel it working almost as soon as you put it on. Please feel free to email me at rebecca.granieri@gmail.com if you have specific questions about their products.
Alexandria says
I am a Beautycounter consultant and it’s fine wonders for my skin! Send me an email alexandriasbeautycounter@gmail.com and I can help you figure out what you need based on your skin type!

I absolutely love Rodan + Fields products!! I use Redefine as well. I love that the face wash is more of a mask. Also, have you tried the Microdermabrasion Paste? It’s the best stuff ever!
Denise says
When are we going to see a post on your remodeling of part of your house?
Mix and Match Mama says
I just need to take some pics!
Lori says
I love the skin care posts! I’m trying to decide on trying the R&Fs new lash growth product. But I’m with Denise too, I’m dying to see the remodel posts and Christmas decoration posts for inspiration and a Hobby Lobby list.
Kathy maas says
Yes….bring on the Christmas decor and renovation!
(Why did you both feel the need to do anything to your lovely home?)
Great Wednesday question, if you knew you were going to be in your home for 25 more years, what would you insist on redoing?
I love decorating topics!
Blair says
Just had my first chemical peel and I’m hooked! What exactly does microdermabrasion do for you that the peel doesn’t?? I love this stuff 🙂 great post!! Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
The tool buffs your face. It removes a lot of dead skin and such without the chemicals.
Kelly says
I’m loving Clinique Take the Day Off balm to remove my makeup (similar to Coconut oil). It gets rid of all of it, and leaves my skin so smooth. I also love Sunday Riley Good Genes (expensive, but lasts a while) and FRESH eye age defy cream (expensive, too, but lasts FOREVER). I AM ALSO a skincare freak. I love Glam Glow masks, they work.
Becky says
About two years ago my friend introduced me to Beautycounter and encouraged me to use the Environmental Working Group’s website Skin Deep (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/) to look into the ingredients that were in my skincare products. I was horrified to discover that the ingredients I was putting on not only myself but my kids as well had been linked to serious health problems. The fact that they said “all natural” and “organic” meant nothing because there is no regulation. What I loved about Beautycounter is that while they offer safe products that perform, they were more focused on educating people and helping to get safe products into the hands of everyone. One of the number one things they recommend as an alternative to their products is coconut oil. I agree that it is amazing. My skin has never been better and I now know that what I am putting on my skin is safe.
Susan says
My favorite sunscreen is elta md 46 clear! I have used it for over 15 years. Best ever!
aimee says
yes! this is my most favorite sunscreen. I’ve tried so many others, but always go back to this one 🙂
Alex says
I used to get chemical peels on a regular basis as well, just for fine lines, acne scarring and to improve my skin texture overall. However, it started to get pretty pricey, so I did some research and found a very minimal at-home glycolic peel by Perfect Image (30% glycolic peel).. this stuff has literally changed my life. I use it every other week and only leave it on for about a minute at a time, and it has helped significantly with the tone of my skin, appearance of fine lines and any scarring that I once had. Definitely not as strong as some of the chemical peels you could get at the derm, but comparable to a light peel. I love it!!
Concetta says
Hi shay are you not using neocutis anymore
Mix and Match Mama says
When I started using Rodan + Fields, I never switched back!
Bernadine says
We all use Coconut oil for everything!!!!
Are your house renovations done? Keep hoping that “today is the day I will see Miss M new room” day…..
Lindsey says
I am a licensed esthetician also and I could not agree more about drinking water. I have always told my clients the two best things you can do for your skin is wear sunscreen and drink water. If you enjoy the benefits of the microdermabrasion and peels, you may like trying something like the Skinpin. Microneedling is wonderful to help to naturally produce collagen and eslastin production. It really helps with fine lines, wrinkles etc. Some people will do that in conjunction with PRP ( platelet rich plasma ) . If you only use a small amount of Retin-A you should be ok for the microneedling , just check with your provider and make sure you have no other contraindications and yours skin looks good to go. You have a wonderful product line up and definitely have skin to reflect that! I was so excited to see this post since I love all things skin care!

I think there is not much better than taking off your face at the end of the night and moisturizing, it feels so good!

Yes, Rodan+Fields has excellent products to combat those. But regardless of what brand you go with, you’ll want a combination of Vitamin C and Retinol.
Emily says
I agree 110% about having annual skin checks. So very important.
I use the Reverse line of Rodan + Fields. I’ve added in some of their other products too like the roller, lip serum and eye cream. I’ve recently added in their Lash Boost. This is such a great post.
Colleen says
Love the DERMAdoctor Kakadu c Amethyst Clay Detox Mask. It cleans out my pores and brightens without being too drying. I use it 2x a week and love it.

Love these posts!! So fun to get recommendations and try new things! I recently started using BeautyCounter products and fell in love. They are completely safe and so good for your skin. BeautyCounter bans over 1500 chemicals that are toxic, and they also have beautiful makeup products too! If you want, take a look http://www.beautycounter.com/leiahgordon I recently became a consultant and I would be happy to send you some fun samples!

When do you use clarisonic and cetaphil??? Is it at night on top of/after washing your face with coconut oil & washcloth or instead of it?? Or do you use in morning instead of coconut oil to wash thanks!!!! Thank you for doing this post 😉
Mix and Match Mama says
I do it after I wash my face at night (or in the morning) just so it doesn’t get all gunky with makeup. Just a bit off Cetaphil and I use it.
Brittany Tinsley says
Arbonne has a brand new device that launched earlier this year called the Genius Ultra. It is the only in home ultrasound anti aging device available on the market and it has AMAZING results! Highly highly recommend it to everyone!
Meredith says
I had my first visit to the dermatologist at the ripe old age of 32! And she prescribed green cream retinol. What is the difference between a Retin A and retinol? Do you recommend one more than the other?
Jessica Tribbett says
I have also been using Beautycounter for a couple of years. When I became pregnant with my first child I started looking into what I was putting on my skin. I’m so careful about eating quality food but what you put on your skin is just as important. I love the line – love their make up too, the Tinted Skin is perfect for every day. Also use coconut oil, love it!

I love Merle Norman’s Anti-Aging eye cream and also Dr. Dennis Gross’s extra strength alpha-beta peels are wonderful. Yes, yes, yes I would also love to see a post on your house remodel!

I swear by Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay mask! It is a one-pound jar of PURE clay powder that you find in Whole Foods store. You only need one teaspoon or even less and mix it with little water or apple cider vinegar (if you have sensitive skin, use water) to create a paste. Apply all over your face and leave it alone for about 20 minutes – you will feel it pulsating and tightening your skin. It really DEEP CLEANSE your skin. Strong stuff. I prefer to take hot shower to remove the mask – it is a lot less messy plus the steam of the shower softens the mask and the mask comes off easier when I massage my face. You could also take it off by using wet towel but it can be messy and takes more effort to remove the mask because it is hard after 20 minutes. It is just my personal preference to do it in the hot shower. My skin clarified and improved so much with regular use of this mask. I use it once a week. Best part? The jar is only $9 and will last you forever because you only need a little each time. Oh and it is organic, all natural stuff that really works!
Coconut oil! I love massaging it all over my hair as hair mask. It is super moisturizing. I massage my scalp really well to stimulate and encourage blood flow. I leave it on for few hours while hanging around the house (hair tied up in high bun) or even overnight (cover pillow with a towel). Shampoo as usual in the shower (I typically skip conditioner this time as the coconut oil itself is already super moisturizing but if you have rough hair then you may want to use conditioner), hair will feel so smooth, soft, and manageable. It really controls frizz too. Try it if you haven’t already!! It’s even great during pregnancy for stretch marks and belly itchiness. It also makes amazing lip scrub – mix little coconut oil and sugar and massage it over the lips (or even face!). Your lips/face will feel amazingly soft and smooth afterwards.
I use Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar as toner on my face. I buy the bottle from Whole Foods and it lasts me a long time. I have a travel-sized bottle purchased from Target which I fill up with ACV and leave on my bathroom counter. Every night after cleansing my face, I use this toner with cotton pad and apply it all over my face before moisturizing my face. Read the reviews! It is all natural. If you have sensitive skin, it is highly recommended to dilute ACV with water in your travel size bottle.
I love beauty posts! I enjoy reading what others use/recommend!

You have gorgeous skin! Thanks for sharing all of your secrets! 😉 My absolutely favorite thing that I’ve been using every day for over 6 years is Norwex’s body pack body cloths. You wash your face (and body if you want) with just a cloth and water. They take off makeup and feel amazing! Lots of people say that the cloths have really helped their acne issues as well. I just LOVE them and always have to bring one along when I travel. They can be ordered here: angelaellingson.norwex.biz 🙂

I use an Olay Pore Minimizer face wash every day. I was finding that my pores on my nose were becoming super noticeable so I search for a minimizer. The Olay face wash has been a life saver! Hi Shay! I’ve read your blog for a long time, but never commented yet. Have you tried the Cure Natural Aqua Gel? I heard about it through MaskCara’s blog, and she highly recommended it. It is a very gentle exfoliator. I got mine on Amazon–just look at the reviews! #1 skin care product in China. Just use a nickel sized amount and rub it on your face and after a few seconds you can feel all the dead skin coming off. It is amazing and helped my complexion so much. I have even used it on my 10 year old when she gets dry patches. It is so gentle. I also use it on my knees and elbows–you wouldn’t believe how it gets rid of all the dead skin. You gotta try it!

I’ve been using Beautycounter products for about a month and my skin is looking and feeling great. My pores are smaller and almost no blackheads. It’s so nice to know the products contain ingredients that work but no harmful chemicals. There are so many untested products we are exposed to, my face isn’t somewhere I want a company to experiment! If curious, check out the charcoal soap and charcoal mask, rejuvenating serum. I too and a busy mom so I use the PMD (personal microdermabrasion) at home once-twice a month and I love it!! I also just discovered the Bobbi Brown cleansing oil and I LOVE it for winter 😉

Beautycounter all the way! As others have pointed out, Beautycounter is the safest and most effective skin care company out there. My fav is the Cleansing Balm. You can use it as an overbite mask and you will wake up with baby soft skin! I’ll never use another skin care line again.
Dana Powell says
So you don’t use the stuff that your dermatologist used to say was the best anymore (I can’t remember what it’s called, but you really liked it)? I’ve always wanted to try it, but it was just so pricey. I love reading everyone’s suggestions, too!

I have been using Beautycounter products for over a year and just recently became a Consultant. I am a full time lawyer for my day job, but I loved these products and the social mission of the company so much that I decided to become a Consultant. Becky’s comment about focusing on education is a core mission of the company. The company is also a Certified B Corp – meaning they value people, the planet and profits equally. I’ve attached a brief video that tells more about the company and their products:
https://youtu.be/LCur_ywX8Lo
But, the bottom line about the products for me is that they work! I’ve tried safer beauty products before, but if they didn’t work, I didn’t have an interest in them. Beautycounter’s line is just as luxurious as any department store brand I’ve tried. The Rejuvenating Radiating Serum is fabulous and has made such a difference in the wrinkles on my face. The Cleansing Balm is a game changer. I’m shocked at how many women don’t wash their makeup off at night! This product is a great way to get into a night time beauty routine. Wash with the Cleansing Balm and go to bed! You can skip the moisturizer if you want – the Cleansing Balm is that moisturizing. The face oils have changed my skin for the better. I add just a few drops with my day and night cream so it lasts forever.
Check out the video and my website (www.beautycounter.com/korichambers) for more details about the products. I’m happy to send samples to anyone who would like to try the products.

Oh, and in case it can help someone: I have struggled with acne for years and been on all kinds of Retin-A, Accutane, etc. I went to the dermatologist in the spring and she put me on Clindamycin, Finacea, and sodium sulfacetamide. I literally never break out now. I just wanted that to be an encouragement to anyone with persistent adult acne- don’t give up! It makes such a difference to not have to deal with painful and embarrassing blemishes.

CRUDE Personal Care products are the best skin care products I have ever used. I always struggle when there are multiple steps: cleanser, scrub, moisturizer etc. The Crude Everything Oil removes your make up, leaves your face feeling amazing, and works with the natural oils already in your body; just in two steps: 1. Put in on 2. Wipe it off with a microfiber cloth. (https://livecrude.com/) I also use my PMD once a week: (https://pmdbeauty.com/)

Hi Shay, thanks for sharing the goodies you use! Can you tell my who your dermatologist is? I was seeing one on Sherman but would like a new one…my dermatologist has a new baby and has cut her hours drastically and it’s looking like she’ll become a stay at home home in the very near future. Thank you!

I have been on a journey to switch out my former toxic routine to a non toxic one for the last year. I have discovered some fabulous products along the way that are all natural, nontoxic, vegan & gluten free. My favorite exfoliating cleanser is by Tata Harper(can be found at Nordstrom.com). I use this every morning ….. And it smells like an orange ice cream bar! I also use a Lavender toner and pomegranate moisturizer from http://www.rootpretty.com. These are both are so soothing to skin….. I love them! I also have started using coconut oil to remove makeup and love it as well.

I think to discuss skin care, aging has to be bought up. Being 48 makes me giggle as I’ve tried everything along the way from hi to low end.
Most results bar none has been Obagi products! But I don’t use year round as one needs to rotate regime every so often during the year.
Also use, cetaphil moisturizer, oil of Olay serum, vitamin c and of course retinol A! (Sunscreen at all times)
Does Botox count?

I’m hooked on dermaplaning…Its same concept as microderm but also removes peach fuzz and leaves your face baby butt smooth 🙂 i get it done at my derma’s office, because it has to be done under medical license. check it out, you would love it.
Now I’m going to try coconut oil as my cleanser!
And YES for Retin-A. Every night for 20 years. Nothing better.
Super fun post!

I’m a skincare freak as well. I use Cerave Foaming Cleanser (it really gets everything off) and Dr. Jart UV Sun Fluid in the AM. In the evening, I use Cerave cleanser, Dr. Jart Tiger Grass Cream (it’s a moisturizer that is for sensitive skin with redness), and then I put on my a pea sized drop of medication from Curology dermatologists. It’s an online company that you pay $20/month and you consult with them via their website and they prescribe a formulation just for you that lasts 3 months. Mine has Tretinoin (retin A), Clindamycin (for acne) and Azealic acid (for redness and exfoliation).

I’ve used the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair since I worked at their make-up counter in college, I’m 33 now. Yes, it’s expensive but like you said it last forever and it’s totally worth the value. I would rather spend now and be thankful I did in 30 years vs. the alternative.
I also pair it with Fruit of The Earth Vitamin E cream from the drugstore. You get 2 containers for less than 4$, I use one after my Estee Lauder and the other jar on my body, thick and creamy!

So, I love coconut oil, it’s my go-to eye makeup remover because I use waterproof mascara daily. However, wouldn’t coconut oil clog your pores if you don’t wash it off? I feel like I have to wash my face after using the oil. I had a hard time finding a good, gentle cleanser that wouldn’t dry my skin out since it’s so dry, so I use Philosophy but maybe I should try this. Is your skin dry or oily? And I definitely need that Clinique SPF, I will be getting that soon!! Thanks for all the info!
Ariadna says
Oh, I just thought of something, you can also use coconut oil as a cuticle oil. That’s what I use, I just transfer a little bit into a small jar that I carry in my purse and put some on when I have a couple minutes where I don’t need to touch anything since it’s so oily. Will you please share you favorite nail care products too? Thanks!

I love hearing about products other women love!! So this post is great. My absolute favorite product to zap a pimple overnight is Mario Badeacu’s Drying Lotion. I get mine at Ulta. Most of my friends have never heard of it, but as soon as they try it they are hooked!! My two teen daughters love it too!

I absolutely love these types of posts! I use Ole Henriksen products religiously. The African Red Tea foaming cleanser and then their Truth Serum (Vitamin C), followed by Sheer Transformation moisturizer. Plus some of their eye creams and face scrubs/masks. I bought this line for my mom as well and the Vitamin C helped lighten up some of the darker areas on her face. I just bought a Clarisonic Fit and I am hooked. My face has never felt so clean!

French products are my current obsession!
Caudalie beauty elixir
Caudalie moisturizing sorbet
La Roche Porsay Effaclar Cleanser
Avene Thermal Water
Avene Cleanance Cleanser
Vichy 2-in-1 exfoliating mask
Embryolisse lait cream concentrate
I also like the Korean brand Tony Moly for face masks (can get at Ulta or Sephora)

I use the same exact coconut oil both day and night as my face wash! Twins 🙂 except sometimes I use Acne Clear face wash (can buy at CVS) for days my diet was poor and feel acne coming or its that time of the month. I would highly recommend Algenist Brightening Mask if you ever get tired of the Glam Glow one. It provides a boost of radiance and even complexion. I love it so much!

Love SK-II products! Made me happy to see that you like it too 🙂

LOVE Beautycounter (truly safer products with 100% transparency of what’s in every single product). Favorites include our Rejuvenating Radiance Serum, Cleansing Balm (the holy grail of products!), Dew Skin (tinted moisturizer with SPF), and our Purifying Charcoal Mask (great for adults, teens with acne, even men)! If you try anything it must be Thayers Alcohol Free Witch Hazel in Rose Petal or Lavendar (I perfer Rose Petal). My skin did a complete 180 after using it during my morning and evening routine right after washing. I just pour alittle on a cotton ball and swipe all over my face. It helps to keep acne and breakouts at bay and gives your skin such a rosy pink glow. My husband tried it ONCE and said how “bright” it made his face. I get mine at Whole Foods for $10 for a large bottle. I think you’d love it, so many great reviews!!

Rodan + Fields has changed my skin and my life! I decided to become a consultant, and it has been completely life changing to me! I love knowing that I’m using the #1 anti-aging line on the market! I certainly don’t want to look my age! 🙂

My skin gets really dry, so a handmade natural soap made with coconut oil (like Naturally Silky Soap) works really well to keep my skin moisturized.

Love coconut oil! I use it for cooking, cleansing, as well as for shaving in lieu of all those chemical creams! Big fan of the Foreo Luna, even traded in my Mia in as it is less harsh on my sensitive skin. Love the microdermabrasion at home by Dr Jart as well as Ole Henriksen line at Sephora too. The Vit-C truth serum is amazing! What is the possibility of you starting your 50 Shades over again with all updated posts? Would love to see that series come back, it was my fav ????????

My skin can be oily (and dry in the winter months) ive been afraid to use coconut oil thinking it might break me out or be too oily. I am going to try it now.

It’s Mary Kay TimeWise Repair for me! I use Foaming Cleanser, Lifting serum, Day Cream SPF 30, Night Treatment with Retinol, and Eye Renewal Cream. We also have TimeWise Repair Revealing Radiance glycolic facial peel to use twice a week. It’s my favorite skin care system ever! Check it out at http://www.marykay.com/tmorris6🙂

This isn’t really a direct product, but six months ago I switched my regular washcloth to the Norwex Body Cloth (I don’t sell Norwex, just bought it at a party). It has been incredible. I now don’t even use any make up remover or soap – just clean water and a gentle wash with the cloth. It takes off all my makeup, including waterproof, with just a few fast swipes. I love it!

I LOVE this. Coconut oil is a life saver. And I have always wanted to try glam glow!!!! I hear it is incredible!!!!

I am embarrassed to say I NEVER used moisturizer until my 40’s after I had lost a lot of weight and the wrinkles were no longer naturally filled in. 😉 I started using the Lancôme samples for Renergie and loved it, it wasn’t too heavy which is why I had resisted moisturizers in the past but I liked to joke it costs a million dollars. In an attempt to save money, I tried lots of other moisturizers but NOTHING worked as well as the Renergerie and I didn’t save any money in the long run. I finally decided to buy the Lancôme and have never looked back, I usually buy it twice a year when Lancôme.com offers 20% off. It’s made a huge difference! I also get glycolic peels every 6 weeks, they have been life changing as well.

Hi! I have been looking for good skin products for years and finally found a SAFE beauty care line, BeautyCounter. I was amazed when I found out that the cosmetic industry isn’t regulated at all and was even more scared when I started reading what was in my lotion, face wash, etc. BeautyCounter (and other organic brands I’ve found) have been so helpful in cleaning up my routine.
Lauren says
I use many different products but my favourite regulars are Chanel moisturizers, Le Lift Crème Riche and Hydra Beauty Crème. It is worth spending money on good quality skin care products. Your skin always looks incredible!

Great list – I’ll have to check out some of the items you recommend.

Hello! Do you remember your skincare routine when you were pregnant? It seems that I am either trying to get pregnant, pregnant, or nursing, and I can’t use anything to treat my acne.
Kelsey says
Hi Shay! On days you use the face scrub and/or mask do you skip any other steps? Or just add after washing your face and before using a serum & moisturizer? Also, do you use in AM or PM?
Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t skip, I just add. I tend to always do it at night, so I would use the PM moisturizer!
Heather says
I was wondering about this too- not sure if I’m reading it correctly- on some days do you only wash your face with coconut oil (in addition to moisturizers, serum, etc)?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! That’s correct!

Hi! I’m also a skincare junkie 😉
Sharla’s in downtown has great skincare products. I would highly recommend her vitamin c serum, pore corrector, and hyaluronic hydration.
Sunday Riley Good Genes is worth the hype.
And I totally agree on Advanced Night Repair, Retin-A, and micro derms.

What did we do before coconut oil!!? Lifesaver!

Philosophy products are amazing! You said something about the Bobbi Brown scrub – you should try philosophy Microdelivery- literally life changing. Also, any moisturizer by them is amazing. Also – if your ever in the market for a fun mask – Boscia Charcoal Mask is awesome – great for cleaning your pores. 🙂

Great recommendations!! I haven’t tried coconut oil on my face but I think it’s about time!

To piggy back off the simplicity of your coconut oil routine (which I’m interested in trying out for makeup removal, that is one usage I have not been brave enough to attempt. I’m so afraid it’ll make my face oily?) have you ever tried using micellar cleansing water before? I’ve been using that for eye makeup removal for the last few months and I’m pleasantly surprised how well it works and how hydrating it feels. I’m a Rodan+Fields girl all the way but I like to try out different products to remove eye makeup. It’s just straight up drugstore brand Garnier. But you might like it!

Thanks to this post, I literally washed my face with coconut oil for the first time ever last night. It was amazing! Why have I been putting it off? I’ve heard about it for the longest time but thought, I can’t be one of those people that’s putting coconut oil on everything… well… now I am! My question is that I would love to start washing my face with that at night, but I also love my Clarisonic. When you do use the Clarisonic – at what point in the routine do you do the Clarisonic? Thanks for this page and said a prayer today for sweet Ashby. We’re waiting for TA from China (praying it comes by Friday) and then we’ll travel in December to pick up our 19 month old daughter. She’ll be our fifth child but first adoption. So excited! Love following your blog. 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Yay!! I’m so happy to hear that! What a blessing! Okay, I use the Clarisonic after I use the coconut oil :).

I have a very similar skin care routine to you, but I LOVE Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentarte over the Estee Lauder one!!! I put it on my hands too! I use thier VIt C also, but can not compare it to the one you use!

I got introduced to Perfecly Posh, a naturally-based line of pampering products, starting using the the Look Natural facial line, and immediately switched over from Clinque and became a consultant. They are made without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, petroleum, etc., and full of good ingredients for your skin! My favorites are the BFF daily scrub, the Cackle Spackle charcoal face mask, the Never Grow Up Serum and Creme, and the face oils….oh my, the face oils. I never thought I would be slathering my face with oil, but it’s actually fantastic for all skin types (oil fights the excess oil your skin was making itself to compensate) and it works as a wonderful primer! Email me at poshbykalynn@gmail.com for any questions or samples!

I am an ingredients girl! Always looking to make sure what I am putting on my skin has ingredients that are free of parabens sulfates etc So when I ended up in the clinical trial for Stella and Dot’s sister brand EVER skincare I knew I was in the right place. Hi! Any recommendations for removal of dark spots/ uneven skin tone?
Thanks!
Alison T says
I used the Reverse regimen from R+F to help fade sun damage and even out my skin tone. It was a huge win for me! Because my complexion was super drab and needed a huge lift. And now I feel much more comfortable in my skin. Perhaps you’d have similar success with it?

I love Renee Rouleau skin care products and have been using them for almost 2 years now. She has products for I believe 9 different skin care types so it’s tailored specifically what you need. My fav skin has never been better. My favorite products are the anti cyst serum (now that I” in my 40’s I get these awful cysts and this stuff is amazing), the Vitamin C serum and the pro-remedy oil.

I use Paula’s Choice skin care. It is phenomenal, reasonably priced, and with solid science behind the line. The spf game is strong!! Love, love, love!

Clinique’s Take The Day Off Balm works wonders! I saw it on a few beauty blogs and it seriously melts away makeup. Has the same texture as coconut oil. Definitely worth a try!
