On Friday morning, we woke up early (hello, 3:30 AM!) and boarded a flight from Dallas to Boston to see our Red Sox play some baseball!
This was little Madeley’s first trip to Boston, and we were so excited to bring her along!! I asked the other two kids if they wanted to go and got these reactions:
Smith: Um, no. (Like it was the dumbest question ever.)
Ashby: Are there shows there? Like Anastasia? (Like on Broadway…). When I told her no, but there was other fun stuff, she was like “no thanks”.
What is wrong with those two Yankee kids?!?! #theirfather
So, it was just me, my biggest and my littlest (with my parents!). We had so much fun!!!
On the plane and ready to go!!
Happy faces when we landed in Boston 🙂 .
As soon as we got there, we checked into our hotel and then hit the ground running.
Our view from the hotel was nice, right?! I love you, Boston!
Off we went to explore some Boston before the night’s game.
My sweet mama 🙂 .
The city had this amazing energy because it was the weekend before the marathon! See! Everywhere you looked there were runners and other people wearing their Boston Strong and/or Boston Marathon shirts. It was so fun!
We had lunch at Joe’s 🙂 .
Lobster roll for me, please!
After that, we enjoyed the beautiful day. By the way, my top is HERE. It is this amazingly soft, fleece top that kept me so comfy during the flight and as we explored. It comes in many colors, but I liked the striped version.
Waking up at 3:30 got the best of Miss Madeley.
This girl saw the sign for Georgetown Cupcake and had to have one!
Who could blame her?!
She also lovvvvves chasing the birds and running around Boston Common. See her way over there…
…she was having the best day!
We love the shops on Charles Street! And Madeley is still napping 🙂 .
Everyone is up and happy!
Love these girls!
122 years!
Around 5:30, my mom took the girls to dinner while my dad and I headed to the game.
I always have so much fun with my dad 🙂 .
Best place to be!
We always go by and see our brick 🙂 .
We had a-mazing seats!!
Before the game, they had a ceremony for the victims of the Boston bombing. I’ve never seen such an emotional ceremony before at a stadium. It was incredible to watch.
And that sums up our night. Bam. So much fun! #dirtywater
The next day, we woke up to cold weather, so before our afternoon game, we decided to keep warm inside. There was a mall connected to our hotel, so we slept late, enjoyed a Starbucks breakfast and milled around until 11:30 when it was time to head to Fenway.
Papa Jay loves his Sox girls!
This girl…
…was having so much fun!
Back to Fenway with two of my girls!
Kensington was showing Madeley our brick…
…so sweet!
This girl is getting SO BIG! I love, love, love spending time with her.
It was cold (it was 36!), but we stayed warm with yummy food!
This girl was so sweet! She just watched, danced and ate her way through 9 innings.
It was such a fun weekend!
I told Smith when we came home that next time, I’ll take them and we’ll see the Sox play the Yankees at Fenway. He said, “No, thanks”. Sigh. Those Yankee kids of mine!
I love this tradition with my dad (and girls!) so much 🙂 . xo

Haha, the kids’ reaction to Boston before you went is the funniest! So cheeky! 😉 And 3:30am sounds crazy early – sometimes I’m still awake at that time!

I truly understand your baseball fervor as I am the same way when it comes to my Cubbies! I love Wrigley Field and would love to watch a game at Fenway some day. If I had to pick an AL team, it would definitely be the Bo Sox!
Ariadna says
We’re in exactly the same boat!! If it wasn’t for the Cubbies I’d root for the Red Sox!
Sheaffer Sims says

I’m with Madeley…I enjoy eating my way through any sporting event. ;). Looks like you guys had a great time! And I’m still confused about why you couldn’t bring a lobster roll back for me in your purse? ??

I’m just dying at the pictures of Madeley in her Sox shirt! She was born to be a Sox fan like her mama 🙂

Maybe Andrew could stress how iconic Fenway is… Even my Yankee friends have made trips to Fenway to experience it! Y’all could do a whole house divided family trip! Y’all had a great series to go and see! What a start to our season! 15-2! #gosox
Mix and Match Mama says
He has! Andrew has even been there to see the Sox play the Yankees. Maybe one day that stubborn boy of mine will change his mind. Right now, I think he just enjoys giving his mama a hard time 😉 .
Theresa Wenz says
I always, always look forward to your recaps of your annual baseball trips. What a great tradition for you all. As a diehard Yankees fan, I was lovin the responses from Smith and Ashby. ??

My daughter and I went to Boston the same weekend. I loved the energy too in the city because of Marathon weekend. We saw the Blue Man Group and my daughter loved it. Definitely an idea for you the next time you make the trip!
nichole says
I love Joe’s! I haven’t been there in ages. My husband and I are heading to New England next summer and I already have plans to bring him to Fenway. We see the Red Sox here everytime they play the Rangers, but I keep telling him that Fenway Park is special!

Next time you are on NewberryStreet you muct stop at Teuscher. The most amazing chocolates and truffles. The champagne truffles are incredible!

Hi shay! Your Boston trips always look super fun!! Quick question, my hubby is taking our boys on a NY/BOSTON baseball trip and I was curious, what hotel do you stay at in Boston (and Andrew NY?) he wants to be close to the fields and I trust that you stay in decent hotels ??thank you so much!
Julie Gould says
Oh my goodness, this makes me so excited for our Boston trip in two weeks!!! My hubby and I are headed to Boston and Cape Cod for 8 days for our 10 year anniversary trip 🙂
Karen says
What a beautiful family you have! Totally off the subject but can you please tell me in what store and city you found your LV crossbody. I’ve been looking for that certain one and can’t find it anywhere…..I think it’s called the Twice or Twinset. Thank you so much!
Amie says
Looks like such a fun time!!! At the second game, that all of you went to, which earrings are you wearing?? I am always looking for a cute stud.
Mix and Match Mama says

Dianna says
I just love this post! I want to do these kinds of trips with my boys some day.
Constance says
What a fun trip! Just curious-since you flew in so early, what did you do with all your luggage?? Did the hotel hold it for you before you checked in? My husband and I are stopping in Boston for 2 days before we travel to Europe this summer and have this dilemma with luggage… also, what are some of your favorite places in Boston? You should do a travel guide of Boston 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes, they typically hold it for us, but by the time we arrived (we didn’t land in Boston until 11:00 because of the hour time change) at our hotel, our room was ready.
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
Love the pictures of Madeley sitting in her seat, eating her french fries with her little legs sticking straight out in front of her. Such great memories with your girls!! That Inspired Chick
Cassidy says
Great pictures!! I love little Madeley’s hand trying to reach around Kensington in that pic with them and Papa Jay. Those girls are so sweet!
Danielle says
We’re going to Boston for the first time with 2 kids in July. Any great restaurant recommendations for families? I’m struggling!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! I’m going to post some soon!
Shelly says
I just love that you have this special tradition with your dad. So sweet!
Carrie Brown says
You girls look like you had a great time in Boston! We husband and I are taking our son the last weekend in June for his 16th birthday! We are going to a Red Sox game of course, and would love some suggestions of places to eat and other things to see! Thanks!
Ariadna says
I kinda love that your 4 kids are evenly split, I think it’s fair. It would be fun to see you all go to a Sox/Yankees game at both stadiums, and go as a family. But what I love even more is that both of you spend quality time with your kids in your own ways. Maybe someday your girls will get you a brick too, just like you did for your dad! How sweet would that be?
Mary Jane McNeill says
What a fun trip! Tell me about your crossbody purse!
Audrey says
FYI there absolutely is theater in Boston. Next time you come check out what is going on at the Wang, Shubert, Opera House, just to name a few. I’ve seen the Boston Ballet, Phantom, Les Mis, Lion King… All in Boston, all amazing!
Mix and Match Mama says
I know…but wouldn’t that take away from my Red Sox watching?! Hahaha! Maybe I’ll offer that up next time!! 🙂
Jasmin says
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Boston and miss that city so much! I always visit Georgetown Cupcakes when I’m there. If you like hot chocolate, there’s LA Burdick near Newbury Street that has the best “drinking” chocolate. So good. Your trip pictures are adorable! Madeley seems to have enjoyed all the food. 🙂
WhittyWife says
Such a fun weekend!! You visited my favorite city on earth. 🙂 I have family in the Boston area and have spent a lot of time there. If you haven’t already, you need to visit Mike’s Pastry next time in the North End. They’re famous for their cannoli, but they also have amazing cheesecake, cupcakes, etc. You and your kiddos will love it!! 🙂 It’s cash only, so come prepared. And sometimes there are lines outside the restaurant, but they typically move quickly.
P.S. Wasn’t the Copley Mall disappointing?! I remember when that mall was busy and full of stores! 🙁
Yley Allen says
Looks like a fun trip! We are also a house divided- My husband is a Yankee fan and I’m a Dodger fan!! So we teach our son to cheer for both and he has been to games at both stadiums, BUT I know he’ll grow up to be a Dodger fan since we live here in Southern California. I call it the local advantage :0) Just don’t tell my husband! Lol.
Beth Jensen says
Shay, Where did you get your cute Boston shirt? Always looking for new gear to wear to the games.
Mix and Match Mama says
The store on Yawkey Way inside Fenway Park!
Biby Chacon says
Such a fun trip! I was in Boston this weekend too. I ran the Marathon and was at the same Friday night game. Glad Madeley had a great first trip!
Tausha Manis says
So special! What precious memories you are building!
Lindsay Dunagan says
Looks like so much fun! I love Boston!!
Bri says
Hi Shay! You might have already explained this, but did your dad grow up in Boston? So curious how the Red Sox fan in you came to be living in TX! (And now that I think about it, does Andrew have ties to NY?) No Astros or Rangers fans?? Or you could just love the teams, I don’t judge just wondering 😉 Looks like a fun trip!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
He just didn’t grow up a Rangers fan (his parents aren’t Rangers fans either). He’s always loved the Sox, so it was easy for me to fall in love with them too. Andrew grew up in the middle of no where and always just liked the big bad Yankees 🙂 .
Andrea says
Omg!!!! We were in the commons at probably the same time. That’s crazy!
Mariah says
I always feel like the weather is never on it’s best behavior when you visit! I wish you sunny, blue sky, warm day for your next game here!
Kimberly says
Out of curiosity, does your family have some kind of connection to Boston (family originally from there long ago)? Or just always been big fans?
Mix and Match Mama says
My dad has just always loved the Sox…and it’s easy for me to see why 🙂 .
Carol says
How did a texas girl end up as a Red Sox fan?
Mix and Match Mama says
My dad has never been a Rangers fan (his parents aren’t, so he wasn’t raised to be one)…so that’s how.
Meredith says
Did you see the “rumor” of the Red Sox and Yankees playing in London next summer!? I am crossing my fingers it is true.. how fun would that be? Maybe Smith would join you there 😉
KC Dimmig says
Boston is my hometown so I love these posts. The city just has a special magical feel. Plus the Sox RULE!! Glad you enjoy the city and your visits. You are great ambassador for Beantown!
Kelli Harshman says
Shay,
What type LV is your cross body purse? I can’t find it on the website! 🙁
Thank you in advance!
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t know the name of that one. It’s a few years old, so it might be discontinued. I bought that one in NYC.
Jeannie C Pietrowiak says
I was based in Boston as a Delta flight attendant right out of A&M..so glad you love it too. I have a love affair with that city and her salty people! I enjoy reading your blog but your Boston posts really get my attention 🙂 Go Sox!!
