You guys…I’m laughing even before I start this post…
…bahahahaha!
I would say that on my list of “things people want me to blog about” this topic here is in the top five…which is insane because I really need someone else to write this post so that I have ideas for my own crazy life!
What’s my key for working at home during the summer?
Tequila.
Kidding.
It’s a joke.
Please don’t email me.
#butilltakeamargaritaifyouhaveone
I would also like to say that I worked from home over the summer much better in 2020.
And 2021.
When my kids had much less to do and most people weren’t traveling.
That is not this year.
Nope.
That is not this year.
About 14 hours into this summer, I told Andrew that I was pretty sure this was the hardest summer of my parenting life so far. Ha! Funny, true and thankfully, we’re getting the hang of it.
The thing is working over the summer with my kids at home goes against everything in my being. My planner/Type-A/organized/structured/time management/productive/routine self loathes having her schedule different/disrupted each and every day…BUT…my outdoorsy/sunshine loving/super active/energetic/adores being with my kids self loathes being indoors during the day when my children are home…thus, I’m constantly battling the need to sit and work and the desire to go jump in the pool. Throw in four kids with activities/camps/therapies/friends/sports/the need to be fed and my day is pretty much organized chaos.
But I’m trying to soak it in.
I’m trying really hard to be present while I work and present when I’m with my family.
I’m trying realllllly hard to enjoy summer, and so, I have some keys/tips on how I’m “trying” to make it work as “peacefully” as possible. Thus, today’s post 🙂 .
I came up with some of my personal keys to working from home during the summer months. Some are silly, some are practical, some are just tools on how I personally get it “done”. There are no right or wrong ways here and seriously, I need someone else to give me ideas, so please share yours too! I know working from home or working outside of the home or working in the home all look different/have their perks/have their cons/have their good days and bad. I’m just sharing what I do for my own sanity to keep my work flow going well and yet still have time for myself and my kids when they’re not in school. I might be 40 years old, but I still want it to feel like summer for me too! Life is too short to not enjoy the simple blessings of each season.
Now, my list is super specific to me at this stage in my life with kids who are 13, 12, 10 and 7. I’m not saying that this will apply to you with smaller kids at home or those of you with a more structured work from home day…BUT…maybe one of my tips here will give you an idea to help you in whatever stage you’re in. Again…you asked, so I’m sharing 😉 .
In no particular order, here are my 21 Keys for Working From Home {SUMMER EDITION} …
#1: Wake up early. I still wake up early even during the summer months. Some mornings, I’ll sleep in until maybe 5:00 but for the most part, my alarm goes off each day by 4:30. If I wake up early, I’m guaranteed at least a solid 2 to 3 hours of my own time before my kids need to wake up and be somewhere (if they don’t have anything that day, I just bought myself even more time as they’ll all sleep later). I personally use this time to study my Bible, exercise, answer emails, work on my blog, make my bed, eat breakfast, shower and get ready for the day.
#2: Don’t get “dressed” every day. I mean, I love taking a shower and getting ready, but some days in the summer, if I know I’m going to be swimming/playing outside later on in the day, I forgo the “getting dressed” part to buy me more time. What’s the point if I’m jumping in the pool later on? Save time some days and just work from home in your swimsuit and coverup if that makes the most sense (plus, it cuts down on laundry!).
#3: Exercise every morning before your kids wake up. It’s easy to not work out later in the day once your kiddos are awake. Get it done early.
#4: Set office hours. I have set office hours each day that I make known to anyone I’m working with that day. I let people know when we’re communicating by phone or email how long I’m “in the office” each day or if I’m going to take a break during the day, I let them know “I will be out of the office from 11 to 2 today, but I will be back from 2 until 6”. I set hours each day based on that day’s schedule. This way, everyone knows the expectation and then if I do take three hours mid-day to do something fun with my kids (like swim across the street at the country club pool), I don’t have to worry about checking my phone. I can be fully present with the kiddos.
#5: Take days off. I love that we live in a go, go, be productive country. I very much like to go, go and be productive…buuuuuut I often think that some of these other countries who value working hard but not working themselves to death…might be on to something too. If you can take a day (or more!) off, you probably will come back even more energetic and ready to tackle work. Take that day off.
#6: Find a driver. Ohhhhh, God bless the older teens that help me drive my kids. I have a few college-aged kids who often help me take or pick up to activities. This saves me a TON of time! So many things do not require parents to be there (sports camps for instance!), so if I can carpool with another parent or have a neighborhood/church college friend pick up and drop off, that is amazing. Speaking of which…
#7: Pay someone to run errands. I was at a football game one time when my friend who had a brand new 16 year old driver in her house tell me that her daughter was so excited to have her license that she was dying to run any errand. She told me her daughter was just looking for errands to run for her and her husband. I was like “Um…does she want to run my errands?” and my friend was like “She would LOVE that!” and thus…I found an age/demographic of sweet young drivers that might not be ready to drive my kiddos around, but they certainly love running my package to the post office. Or returning that item for me at Target. Or picking up something for me at the store. I don’t do this all the time, but during the busy summer months when I’m trying to work and also have time with my kids, having someone happily run errands that would hang over my head for dayyyyyyys is a life-saver!
#8: Use an out of office assistant on your email. If your office hours vary or are erratic this time of year, make sure you add an out of office message on your email to let people know.
#9: Set boundaries with your kids. My kiddos know that if they give me time to focus on work, then I’ll have more time to focus on playing with them. They also know that I’m a sucker for their faces and will stop what I’m doing to talk to them if they come in my office. Andrew has had to repeatedly tell me to set better boundaries when I’m working from home. That just because I’m here does not mean I have to tell them where we keep the bananas (in the same spot we always keep bananas), and that they have to be a little more independent and not just rely on mom for every little thing (so go actually look for the bananas instead of asking mom). I keep my office door open most of the day unless I really need time to focus/make calls/etc and then I let them know that I’m shutting it for _ amount of minutes (10 minutes, one hour, whatever), so can they please consider that before opening it. I would say that this is a work in progress over here (because I stink at this), but I’m trying to get better.
#10: Set boundaries with your work. This can be tricky when work is happening right there inside your house and easy to access. When I’m at work, I’m at work. When I’m not at work, I’m not looking at my emails or going back to my desk. Just because my computer and desk are riiiiight there doesn’t mean I have to keep going back to it if I’m not “at work”.
#11: Set your phone to Do Not Disturb hours. Andrew teases me that my phone is basically turned “off” all day long and useless BUT I love these features! On my iPhone, I have the settings to where every single day my phone goes into Do Not Disturb during certain hours (when I’m focused on my family and not work) and then, I also have it set to where my apps all shut off each day at a certain time too. These settings are amazing. You can make them consistent every day or change them each day or make them for only certain days. You can also override them should you need to, but for the most part, this helps me tremendously not look at my phone when I’m having family time because…I basically have it turned off 😉 .
#12: Find camps/activities that serve your family that year. I will say that one thing COVID taught my family was to pick and chose activities that serve us and stop doing ones that don’t. My kids used to do a ton of sports camps just because they were offered in our town and everyone else was doing them. This year, we cut back biiiiig time. If my kids don’t absolutely love it, they don’t need to do it. It took me a long time to realize that just because it used to serve my family doesn’t mean that it always serves my family. Sometimes sleeping longer, playing outside and not running to camps serves us and then other weeks, waking up early and getting in the car to go to something they’re truly excited about, serves us.
#13: Get babysitters! There is nothing wrong with having someone come over and watch your kiddos while you leave or…hang out with your kiddos while you work/do laundry/make dinner. Your kids will probably love it, the person who comes over will probably love it and you will love knowing your kids are being looked after (if even for an hour!) while you handle your mom life.
#14: Leave your work space tidy and organized for the next day. When your work time ends, make sure it’s tidy and sets you up for an easy morning the following day.
#15: Don’t get distracted with household chores. If you’re working, you’re working. Just because you know there is laundry in the dryer that needs to be folded doesn’t mean you stop your work and fold it. It took me a long time to realize that Andrew is super helpful, but he never leaves his office and drives home to fold laundry during the day because he’s at work and that would be ridiculous…so why do I leave my desk and do it?
#16: Make sure to meal plan! I love meal planning in the fall, but geez, life is easier in the summer if you always have recipes and groceries on hand for all of your meals.
#17: Speaking of which, use that slow cooker! I have a whole batch of summer slow cooker suppers you can check out, but my slow cooker friend is just as helpful during the summer as the school year!
#18: Invest in activities your kids can do at home while you’re working. At the beginning of summer, we made sure we had a lot of things at home ready and waiting for the kids. We showed the big kids how to air up their bike tires, we made sure everyone had helmets that fit, we bought new sidewalk chalk, paint, blank paper, kinetic sand and other crafty things. We keep the bins in the pantry loaded with easy snacks, and we let them know when it’s okay to watch a movie should the weather be yucky. I do think it helps if you’re stocked and ready for things your kids can do to entertain themselves while you work a bit each day.
#19: Have easy lunches on hand. Whether your kids need to make their own or you just want easy stuff for everyone, coming up with what to eat for lunch is one of my least favorite things to do during the summer, so when you meal plan, make sure you specifically think of easy things for everyone to eat at lunch.
#20: Don’t make unnecessary appointments. Yeah, this is not the time of year to do anything *extra*. I typically get my hair highlighted every six weeks…over the summer, I only do it one time (at the 8 week middle mark) so that I only have to go once instead of twice while the kids are home. I let me nails go longer by a week so that I am only getting them “dipped” every 3ish weeks instead of two. We paused our podcast recording for the summer. I did all of the dentist/doctor appointments earlier in the year before school let out. I am trying so hard not to do anything unnecessary right now so that I can use that extra time to work and/or hang out with the fam.
#21: Unplug. Enjoy. Show yourself grace. It’s summer! I’m trying really hard to ENJOY the time with my kids. Nothing is going to be perfect in my life, so I’m constantly reminding myself to show myself grace when I’m a mess/they’re a mess/my schedule is a mess. We don’t get these days back, savor them.
Guys, we need a name for this new series I accidentally created. Help. Pleassssse! So far, I’ve shared my 25 Keys to a Peaceful Morning, my 25 Keys to Maintaining our Yard and my 25 Keys to Outdoor Summer Entertaining. Apparently, I’ve started a blog series, but I don’t have a name for it so that I can properly tag it on my sidebar. Best suggestion for a name wins you a prize (to be decided later…I’ll think of something fun!). I’m not sure I’m committing to the number 25 or the word “keys” but honestly, I didn’t realize I was committing to this series either but it’s taken on a life of its own. Suggestions in the comment section please 😉 .
I mean…I know many of these were no-brainers/cheesy/you’re already doing them, but it’s what my brain came up with today as I sat here and thought about it. I would LOVE to know what you’re doing to keep yourself sane as you work from home with kiddos. Please, please, please comment and share! All the mamas need to work together here so we can ALL enjoy our summer 🙂 .

I’m not sure I have something to add – but as a homeschooling mom who works from home part-time, a lot of this resonates with me! I think that having boundaries but being okay if the edges of those get fuzzy is so key.

I think food prepping is key! I hate having to take tons of little breaks to cut an apple, cut a cucumber, rinse the blueberries…etc… I try to get in the kitchen early in the morning and food prep lots of fruits and veggies so the kids can grab them whenever they want and I like that they are usually getting a healthy snack first before we move on to junk food. 🙂

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this! I was one of the many hoping for this post. One of my problems is trying to conquer the next day’s to-do list to get ahead. But yesterday after I finished, I closed my laptop, and we headed to the pool! Some days don’t look as balanced but yesterday I made both work!

“Shay’s Keys to….” could be a good title.
I have also been working from home during COVID, and while my kids are older – 14 and (a young adult), 19, when they were both home during the day, I would start my day early – like you, I’m up at 4:30 a.m. and cranking out the work. They are pretty independent, so no worries there. It is a whole lot easier since they are not dependent upon me. Do I still get interrupted? Yes, but it comes with the territory and I would not change being at home with them.

All our children are grown now 28, 29, 30, and 34. I worked outside the home at a university. A rite of passage for our children when they hit middle school (6th grade in our town) was to begin doing their laundry. Did it mean all the time? No, I would still help out but overall they worked it out among themselves. Each child had their own day to do laundry. It was so fun to hear the boys begging their sister to let them trade days or even offering to pay her to do their workout gear. The point is we started with towels. It was a huge help. It taught them independence and life skills. It all started when I came home from work one day in the summer and our youngest, our daughter, was standing on their step stool used when they were too little to reach the sink, and she was putting towels in the washer. She had watched me and took it upon herself to do a big girl job. She even had written down notes on what to do. That is when we got the idea and it really took off. We found it to be a great motivator for learning more adult tasks as they grew older.

I’ve also found giving my big kids (ages 7 and 11) a to-do list helps them have some structure and responsibility. I have some broad items on their list like – do something creative, read to your sister ( we have a 7 month old baby), spend time outside, play a game and then things like do something for someone else and ask mom what chore she needs you to do. They don’t get everything marked off everyday but that’s ok. At supper we talk about what they didn’t get to and brainstorm ideas for the next day and they’ve come up with some great additions to their lists.

Making a list of various tasks I need to do, then setting timers on my phone to accomplish each task is my trick. -and another idea: why don’t you take reader questions (as in needing help/advice) once a month for a blog post? You could call it A Little Help From a Friend. OR, you and Erica could go it on the podcast and call it Friend to Friend or something like that.
I know you weren’t asking for blog ideas, but I thought of one more😊 Since you are such a wonderful travel agent and very knowledgeable about it, why not have a once- month (or even quarter) post about travel advice – specifically about where to go for what as opposed to packing tips or something like that. Not to step on the toes of what the travel agency does, but maybe something like, Destination Breakdown, where you share one place and top 8 orm10 reasons to travel there. Budget destinations from East Coast, Anniversary getaway, Girls’ trip, and so on. Some of us don’t know where to start. We could still call your agency for details, of course!
Have a happy summer! You’ve got this!

I love this type of post and everyone’s creative ideas for what to call them. My favorite is Shay’s Ways because when you have a name that rhymes with so many things, I say take advantage of it! Mine doesn’t rhyme with anything (Kimberly). I guess Kim rhymes with a few things but nothing useful 🙂
