Gooey Butter Bars…or maybe you’ve heard of them as Neiman Marcus bars…or maybe Gooey Butter Cakes…no matter what the name, the bar is delish! It’s kind of a blondie…kind of a cheesecake square…kind of a cake…it’s flippin’ awesome. That’s what it is.
My grandmother has been making these for at least 40 years. They’re a staple in our family. They’re easy, they’re a crowd pleaser, they’re absolutely perfect. You’ll make these again and again…and then I’ll mix and match the recipe and you’ll make them some more.
The main ingredients couldn’t be simpler. You might even have everything on hand.
The first layer is the base..the crust, sort of…then the second layer is spread on top.
Shopping List
1 box of yellow cake mix
4 eggs
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 box of powdered sugar (about 4 cups)
8 oz package of cream cheese, softened
4 eggs
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 box of powdered sugar (about 4 cups)
8 oz package of cream cheese, softened
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease (I use Pam) a 9×13 inch baking dish.
In bowl, combine cake mix, 2 eggs and melted butter. Spread in bottom of pan.
In a second bowl, beat with electric mixer, powdered sugar, 2 more eggs and cream cheese until smooth. Spread on top of crust mixture.
Bake 35-40 minutes until edges are brown and center set (it will still be slightly wobbly in the middle).
Cool on counter 30 minutes, then refrigerate 2 hours up to 2 days.
Slice…devour…thank me. They’re that good.

Love these! They are a staple in our family too (we call them chess squares). By the way, I'm making red velvet whoopie pies today 🙂

Can't wait to make these to take on my family vacation. However, up here in Canada we buy powdered sugar in the bag. Do you happen to know the quantity of powdered sugar in a box, so I can hopefully find something of the same amount up here?
Thanks kindly!
Kristy 🙂
