Happy Friday!
Since my kiddos missed school on Monday and Tuesday due to ice, I feel like today is Wednesday…I’ve been confused all week. Thankfully, it’s not Wednesday and it truly is Friday!
My favorite part from Tuesday’s “Shay’s Favorite Beauty Product” post? Reading your comments!! You ladies offer up the BEST suggestions! I have already purchased one product that was recommended to me once via a comment and twice via email on Tuesday…Kiehl’s Deeply Repairative Hair Mask. After the third person suggested it, I went online and read the reviews and decided to give it a try. I’ll let you know what I think. With summer coming up, this mama is going to need a good hair mask to help with all of the sun and chlorine my poor head is about to see.
This week, a sweet reader named Kristen emailed me and told me to watch this Josh Kelley video on YouTube about he and wife Katherine Heigl’s daughter Naleigh Moon. Oh heavens! Lots of tears were shed when I watched this video for the first time. This is the sweetest song and video about their adoption. This made me a big Josh Kelley fan…such a sweet video :).
I don’t know about you…but I stayed up way past my bedtime on Sunday watching the Oscars. My favorite part…
…Lady Gaga singing a Sound of Music medley.
Who would have thought those 8 words would ever come out of my mouth?
It was brilliant. Whoever had that idea should get a raise. Brilliant.
Two weeks ago, I was told by my doctor that I needed a mammogram…since I’m only 33, this was a first for me. After my doctor reviewed my first mammogram, I was told to go back for another one. After the second mammogram, I had to have a sonogram. Fun times.
Thankfully, everything is okay. The doctor said she’s confident it’s nothing (but I’ll go back in six months for another mammogram just to be 100% sure). I wasn’t really planning on blogging about this, but then Erika said it was a good PSA for me to encourage my friends online to get their girls checked too (if you’re the right age and your doctor recommends it).
Going into my first mammogram, I was under the impression that it would hurt like none other but honestly, it was no big deal. If you have been putting off a mammogram, consider this my encouragement to get one. We have to take care of each other :).
My Grasshopper Pie is number five this week…
…it’s a chocolate and mint ice cream pie that you totally need to make for St. Patrick’s Day (or any day for that matter!).
Happy Friday friends!!
XOXO

So thankful your girls are okay! Off to watch that video now, and I'm prepared to boo hoo.
It's 5:14, and I need that pie immediately. I also need tacos. Lots of tacos. But instead, I think I'll eat a salad for lunch. AGAIN. #lettuceforthewin

I need to go back and read all your other comments from Tuesday's post! That hair mask sounds great! I missed Lady Gaga's performance but have heard so many good things!! And…so glad you did a PSA! We gotta help each other out!!

Happy Friday, Shay! I love your blog but rarely comment. You are so right about the Lady Gaga performance. And thank you for the encouragement to get a mammogram. I'm 30, but even with a lot of breast cancer in my family, I've yet to have one. I need to make an appt asap! Writing it on my to-do list now. Lindsay @ http://sevenlayercharlotte.com

Lady Gaga was fabulous, and I am so thankful that you are okay! Love you!!

I ordered some oil and should get it today! I can't wait to try it. I also grabbed a wet brush jr for my daughter and it works wonders. She no longer cries that it hurts when I am brushing her tender, little head. Thanks for all the things you share on your blog. I love coming here each day and reading. 🙂 I hope you have a great weekend with your sweet family!
Tara G. says
I think that they should let ladies reserve blocks of time for mammogram appointments so you can go with a group of friends. I mean, if you have to sit and wait in a gown while they read the results, you might as well be with friends, right?! And then go out to eat.

Thank you so much for telling people about getting mammograms!!! My mom started getting them every year since she was 35 and she is now 60 and never missed one and because she was so regular they found a cancerous spot. She had a mastectomy to remove one breast this fall and now is cancer free. She truly believes that getting her regular mammograms helped save her life!
Thanks for creating such a fun blog to read and look forward to every morning!!

Way to make me cry at 6:30 am. 🙂 What a beautiful song! Adoption is incredible. So happy you are ok! You are such a good example for preventive care and early detection.
Rachel Emily says
Who knew that Lady Gaga had that beautiful voice hiding under all that ridiculousness?! I'm a HUGE Sound of Music fan and I was pretty skeptical when I heard she was doing the tribute, but she killed it! Have a great weekend Shay!!
Julie Magdic says
I agree with Tara!! Great idea.
Ashley Weeks says
The Josh Kelly video is beautiful!!! Brought me to tears, as well.

I too was in fear of my first mammogram after a friend told me it hurt like nothing else. I took an advil an hour before I went and it was nothing. Sure, a tad uncomfortable but nothing serious at all. I just had my second one a couple of years later and it was the same deal. So thanks for the PSA. I've had 5 close women in my life with breast cancer. Be vigilant ladies.
Cheri says
Never heard Josh Kelly sing and that song was wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

Happy Friday Shay. I will be checking out the videos and makeup comments. THANK YOU for the shout out about mammograms -it's very important. Also it's very important to do monthly self breast exams -this is where I fail in my health regimen. The more you know your body the better it is to spot abnormalities. The week after your period is the best time, I am told.

Oh, friend, thank goodness you are ok!

Shay, this may be a very personal question and I apologize if it is too personal to answer. I have dense breast tissue and have been thinking about actually requesting getting a mammogram myself at my annual check up (I am about to turn 28). Do you happen to have dense tissue as well?
Cara@HomespunKitchen says
I'm so glad everything turned out ok! My question though is how exactly do they do a mammogram when the girls are so.small??? After nursing three kids, I got nuthin!!!
Alison F says
Cara, I am probably an A cup on a good day (B when I nursed my babies), and I wondered the same thing. I've had two mammograms now and it's not that difficult, just uncomfortable. I think those mammogram techs are used to all shapes and sizes, so they know where to push and pull! Go do it for your peace of mind.

I Can't believe I missed lady gaga! Have a great weekend

Oh my goodness…..that VIDEO!! So sweet. And, I agree with you…I am so not a Lady Gaga fan, but she nailed it at the Oscars! She IS talented. Just a little unusual, to say the least. And, thank you for the hair mask recommendation. I need to try that!

I just wanted you to know I love reading your blog everyday!

Lady Gaga totally was amazing… proved she's a real singer
Natalie Zambreski says
I have yet to watch the Lady Gaga video but I've heard it's fantastic!

I've been getting mammograms since I was 27!!! My mom died of breast cancer when she was 39 so that is why I've had to go starting at such a young age. I'm 32 now. You get used to it after a while, but man the whole smashing your boob thing can hurt!
Janet says
So glad you went with Erika's encouragement to post. If you help just one person make the decision to have a mammogram, it's worth it.
Kecia Parrish says
My mom just beat breast cancer! Yay! I have had to go back for the same thing and just went this week for my check up after 6 months. All was good…cyst…but am clear to go back in a year now. I'm 34….thanks for sharing! Early detection is key. 🙂

I love watching your adoption journey unfold! I used to practice law exclusively doing adoptions, a wonderful and emotionally difficult job, and there are so many wonderful stories and it is so fun to see your family and Ashby growing together.

As a HUGE Sound of Music fan, I was not a fan of Lady Gaga singing songs from the movie. Don't get me wrong I think Lady Gaga is extremely talented but not who I would pick to sing songs from one of my favourite movies. Each to their own!

I agree Danika.

I'm also 33 and had my first mammogram a few months ago. I felt a couple spots that just didn't feel right and asked my doc who referred me for one. And then, they sent me for a sonogram. Ugh. I also was told not to worry about it but still come back in 6 months to be sure. The doc said it was probably a "fibroadenoma." And I'll say too, the mammogram was not that bad. Uncomfortable, but it didn't hurt.
Caitlin says
I'm only 30 when my Dr. sent me for a mammogram, then a sonogram, then a biopsy…it runs in my family, but still, I'm 30! Luckily it was nothing but my sorority big sis was diagnosed at 26…its happening earlier and earlier and your PSA is a great reminder to check early.
Jaclyn Johnson says
Hi Shay! I'm glad you're ok and I think it was a good idea for you to blog about getting your girls checked, thanks for the encouragement!
Jaren says
Shay, I just scheduled my first mammogram today! I'm 35, and my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. I'm not taking any chances, and I'm going to MD Anderson to get my first one at their diagnostic clinic. I'm a bit scared. I'm glad you posted something about it.
Haley Southey says
Boom Shaka Laka is right!! So happy for the PSA. thanks for the reminder!

Also, I missed the Oscars and I heard Lady Gaga sang songs from the sound of music. I thought she would absolutely butcher it but low and behold I found the video on YouTube and I am so surprised! I love the sound of music and thought she was great! I also love how Julie Andrews came onstage afterward! Lady gaga, you are redeemed in my book! 😉
Jen Watts says
I just purchased moroccan oil products via your recommendations on Tuesday. So excited!

I am convinced that whoever invented that mammogram machine was a man! I am pretty positive that a woman would have come up with something a little more comfortable. It doesn't "hurt", but gosh it is so awkward and intimidating. I am going this week. Ready to get it over and done!
Lexie Loo, Lily, Liam, and Dylan Too! says
I spy the wet brush! Best brush ever! Stopping by from the linkup. Enjoy your weekend!
Angie says
I had my first mammogram at 30 and it wasn't a pleasant experience but I rested so much easier knowing everything was okay. Glad your results came back good.
Chic Coastal Living says
Love that video! So sweet! I had my first mammogram at 35 and I ended up having to have surgery to get a biopsy and everything was fine. Thank You Jesus. I would recommend getting an ultrasound as well every time you have a mammogram. God bless you sweetie! XO

I just want to say that I'm thankful you're okay and that all of your tests came out fine. Like you, I was scared to death to have my first mammogram years ago, because everyone just goes ON and ON about how painful/uncomfortable they are. Well, I don't know if it's because I'm OLD (I was in my 40's when I had my first one) or because I spent nearly 4 years of my life having one of our 4 babies tuggin' on me…but the mammogram was no big deal. Well, other than the fact that the technician was young and perky, and looked at me like I was the crypt-keeper, and THAT kind of hurt my pride! HA! All this to say: don't be afraid. Make your appointment. The whole thing takes, like, 2 seconds. You won't regret it.
