Hello and Happy Thursday!
Today, we’re going on a little field trip 🙂 .
Over the weekend, we had friends in town and took them to our very favorite little section of Nantucket, Sconset.
While we were there, we showed them the Sconset Market and famous roses that adorn the cottages, and Courtney said “Why haven’t you put this on your blog yet?”.
And you know what, she was right.
I have shared Sconset with you a bazillion times. It’s truly our favorite section of the island and one you’ve seen my family visiting for YEARS…but I have never specifically covered the little market or the roses.
A few things before we begin our field trip (of course):
#1: Here’s my favorite little map of Nantucket…
…as you can see Sconset is the far eastern end of the island. For an island that’s only about 15 miles long, that probably doesn’t seem far from town. It’s a hike though. It’s a beautiful drive, but it certainly is a hike so please don’t think you can walk there. The easiest way from town to get there is to take a cab/Uber or the Wave (the free public bus).
#2: I will do a separate post on the entire section of Sconset (so stand by for that!). This post is just about the roses and the market. This is not a complete breakdown of this area. On that note…
#3: The roses don’t bloom all season. They’re at their peak right now. We are out there often and two weeks ago, they were not quite in full bloom yet (on the verge, but not spectacular). Right now, they’re absolutely magnificent, but that won’t last all summer. Just know that you might show up pre/during/post roses. Also note…
#4: The market and surrounding little area (one cafe, a sandwich shop, and two little stores) are open for the summer season, but they will close right after Labor Day and not re-open until next summer. I drive out to Sconset every time I visit during the off season because it just holds a special place in my heart…and it’s a ghost town. These cottages are mostly not winterized, so everything is shuttered until summertime.
#5: The sun rises early on Nantucket this time of year (5:11 this morning!), but the market doesn’t open until 8:00 (sometimes a bit earlier). As much as I would have loved to have taken pics with the most ideal morning light, I didn’t want to hang out several hours and wait until the market opened…so please forgive some of the “bright” photos with full sun. It’s great for a beach day, bad for a blogger trying to snap pics for an online field trip 😉 .
This is the busiest week of the year on Nantucket, and I keep repeating to myself “just get through it this week, just get through it this week”. The drive from my house to Sconset *typically* takes me about 20 minutes. On this day, it took almost an hour. #julyfourthweekproblems

Good morning! I arrived right at 8:00. It was already a spectacular Nantucket July day…
One can have lunch at Claudette’s (on the right) or dinner at Sconset Cafe (in the middle).
Sconset even gets its own little post office.
This is a real estate office. Just the cutest.

The area is called ‘Sconset for short.
If you are one of the Wings watchers out there, you’ll probably remember that in the TV show, they all went to Sconset High School (which was fictitious as the actual high school is Nantucket High 😉 ).
Alrighty, I showed up at 8:00 because I wanted to pop in before it was totally slammed with people. No one wants to see me wondering around taking photos while they’re trying to actually shop. I did my best to be subtle and stay out of the way, but the market is fairly tiny and was already bustling.

…they not only sell food, but they sell some merch too. Behind that white counter is where they serve ice cream during the day. You order and receive it from the window outside the front of the store.

…I wanted to capture a few photos of homes from the bluff walk. See the ocean? These cottages are set right on the bluff overlooking the Atlantic. This time of year, they are COVERED in roses.

I’m not sure how I ended up with a work day that involved sipping coffee and walking around my favorite place in the world on a gorgeous morning, but THANK YOU all for allowing me to do it. This wouldn’t be my work day without YOU being here.
After I was finished taking pics, I hopped back in my car and drove back home (it only took 30 minutes going that direction, woohoo!). The littles were at tennis when I arrived home and Smith was at work, so I took a few minutes to snap photos of what I purchased at the Sconset Market…
I brought back some cookies…
…we tried them after our lunch yesterday, and they were delish!
I also picked up these…
…because OF COURSE!
I brought home a jar of red pepper jelly for this weekend’s July 4th charcuterie, and…
…a bag of beans for my coffee maker.
And that’s a little field trip of beautiful Sconset.

Awwww. That is such a cute little town. I love the hilly streets through the town. It reminds me of the first time I visited Grass Valley, CA back in the 1960s, except that Grass Valley is not near an ocean. Thanks for the pics. Adorable!

Thanks for the great pics! When we were there last year we rented bikes and biked from town to Sconset. The best way to go but ooh, we felt it the next day! Meatloaf sandwich at Claudettes as a reward! So glad you get to enjoy that every day!

This might sound goofy but if the business and homes close up for winter does the post office close too? Just seems odd?

Being that Nantucket is situated off the coast, do people have to run their air conditioner alot or just a few weeks out of the year. Also, how cold does it get in the winter and do they ever have snow? Enjoy your holiday. Its going to be record heat here in VA with a heat index of 110°+

So many places do not have AC here (even quite a few restaurants and some hotels). We typically don’t turn ours on until July. It snows a lot on the mainland in Massachusetts, so relative to that, not much. It snows some but because it’s an island, the water keeps it from snowing a ton.

Do people live there year round in the cottages? I was just curious with everything being closed down most of the year, do people only live in their houses during that time? Thanks for sharing <3

They do not. I would say none (or almost none) of them are winterized.

Absolutely beautiful, I really hope to get there someday. The roses and all the flowers are gorgeous. They are especially wonderful growing against the cottages and gracing the small lawns and flowerbeds. I bet the air smells crisp and salty. You are a lucky girl Shay! You have been to SO many places around the world, so I am curious (and nosy) and wondered what makes this specific place on Nantucket your absolute favorite places. However; if that is something you want to keep close to the chest, I understand.

No, great question! I love traveling. It is truly my favorite, favorite thing to do…but something about Nantucket feels more like home. I promise you, most people come here and see it and have a fine time, but they don’t feel that “home” feeling you know? Kind of like when I travel to 99% of places. I love them, but it doesn’t feel like home to me.

Gorgeous roses!!!! I have Sadie working on the exact rose varietal that is and if there is any hope for those of us in Zone 8B!🙏🏻 and if some of those butter toffee peanuts made there way back to Mckinney…I mean I wouldn’t turn them away!
