Well…it’s Show and Tell Tuesday with Andrea over at Momfessionals and today…we’re all sharing our most embarrassing moments.
These are going to be funny to go back and read :).
The ironic part about my most embarrassing moment to date is that after I shared it with a few girlfriends, I repeated the incident (just in a different location and as a 33 year old instead of a 16 year old). So needless to say, we all got a laugh out of that too.
One day when I was a sophomore in high school, I was walking from one class to another class with my boyfriend during passing period. Our school was pretty big with a lot of students and we were walking from an upstairs class to a downstairs class down our school’s main staircase…
…I remember it like it was yesterday…I was wearing a long black maxi skirt with black clogs (sounds fab, right?!) and carrying my big school tote and purse. Just as we were stepping off the landing to the top step, the back of my maxi skirt got caught in-between my foot and the bottom of my clog and I started falling forward…and then I proceeded to fall down the entire flight of stairs…in front of everyone…
…and because maxi skirts have an elastic waste-band, my skirt came down quite a bit too. Yup.
So there I was…16…sprawled out at the bottom of the staircase with my skirt pulled down and books and purse all around me…and my boyfriend looking at me with a horrified expression on his face (that quickly turned into laughter) from waaaaay up at the top of the staircase where I had just fallen from.
Because I was 16 (that horrible self-conscious age when you’re really concerned about what others think about you), I wanted to die right then and there. My skirt was down and my immature boyfriend and his buddies thought it was hilarious…I was wishing for the sweet relief of death.
So, the funny part about this story is that a few weeks ago, my girlfriends and I were discussing what we would blog about for our most embarrassing moments and I shared this story…and then…
…a few days later, I was leaving church after teaching the 3 year old class. Andrew already had our kids in the car and they were in the parking lot waiting for me. I was walking across our church parking lot (a very flat surface) with lots and lots of people around…and all of a sudden, I fell flat on my face. My heels flew off in different directions…I was holding my bag and Ashby’s bag and they went flying and the next thing I knew…three people from church who I didn’t know were helping me up, retrieving my shoes for me and asking if I was okay.
Sigh.
Me and my pride walked to the car as quickly as I could and when I told Andrew he said…well, it was bound to happen in those shoes you wear.
Thanks honey.
And then…
…as we were driving out of the parking lot, someone from church sent me a Facebook message about the fact that they had just seen me fall.
Apparently, I was everyone’s pre-lunch entertainment ;).
So, there you have it. I’m off to buy one of those life alert necklaces now…I’m pretty sure that one of these days, I’m going to fall and not be able to get back up…
One last thing…you want to hear something ironic? On March 17, 1992, exactly 23 years ago today…I broke my arm…by falling down in my grandparents’ living room. You can’t make this stuff up people ;).
Next time on Show & Tell Tuesdays…
…we’re sharing our favorite vacation ever. Eeks! This is going to be so hard for me!
And in honor of today being St. Patrick’s Day…
Happy St. Paddy’s Day!

Our embarrassing stories are so similar! Oh to be 16 and fall down stairs in front of your peers! So embarrassing. You are not alone! So at least we can take comfort in knowing that everybody does something like that at some point. And I just ate it in front of a whole bunch of people at the mall the other day too. It never ends! Have a good day :).
Kathryn says
Glad you're okay! Thankfully at that rate you've got another 16-17 years before it may happen again! I would have fallen way more frequently in your shoes…you've got skills to walk in high wedges 24/7! ?
Denise Panetta says
I fall over my own feet too all the time! Running joke in my family. Be careful today! I also made that St. Patrick's Day munch … taking it to work for my co-workers to munch on it all day!
Narci says
Such a good story. Oh gosh–the entire flight of stairs? Poor thing! That is awful, and I can't believe your boyfriend laughed! What a meanie!
Erika Slaughter says
Hahahahaha!!!! It was fate that aligned all these dates! Hilarious!!!

I'm glad to know I'm in good company! I have a history of falling down stairs. The worst time was when my college roommate's mom was getting remarried and I was invited to her engagement party an an historic home. The stairs had just been waxed, so, of course, I fell down them twice in one night. With lots of local prominent people around. Not one of my finer moments, but at least I can laugh about it now!

Isn't it crazy how much better we recover from the embarrassing moments as an adult though? Heels have gotten me many times.
Leigh says
Oh girl I am the exact same way. I can fall and twist my ankle no matter what shoes I'm wearing. I don't need heels to help me. You got skills walking in tall shoes like you do. I'm glad you're okay. And that part about the life alert necklace, lol!!!
Lisa says
Been there, done that!! I laughed so hard at Andrew's response….men!! lol. Little do they know even something embarassing like that WILL NOT keep us from wearing our heels. Period:)
Erin says
Oh my gosh that sounds painful! You poor thing!! I have tripped, slipped and fallen many times so I understand your pain!

Haha I've had many of those moments! One in high school as well and fell into the middle pole between the doors – that hurt. I broke my arm when I was 8 weeks pregnant with my first child in NYC – fell down a flight of stairs. Then not but a month ago my husband and I were at church walking to pick up the kids and my heel got stuck in my jeans cuff and I totally ate it – carpet burns and all.
Kelly @ The OK Momma says
Oh man, I fell down an entire flight of stairs in my sorority house in college and had the bruise the size of Texas to show for it. SO PAINFUL! But more hilarious than embarrassing since I was among friends!
Jenny says
I understand! Ha! I was about 16 when I slipped on ice on the crosswalk and fell down in the middle of Main Street. I had cars lined up on both sides of the road and since it is really small town, most everyone knew me, and honked their horns and waved. :/
Daily Momtivity says
That sounds awful! I can't believe you weren't hurt falling like that! I remember my first day as a jr in high school I tripped going up the steps. It was so embarrassing but I don't think anyone saw me 🙂
Hanging with the Hirsts says
Oh no! That's so embarrassing (but funny now). I had a nasty fall 3 years ago on my first run for my half marathon training – somehow I caught the sidewalk with my shoe and tumbled down so hard that I ripped up both knees, shoulder, elbow and hand. An older man saw me and tried to help and then I walked a mile home while crying to my mom on the phone and bleeding out… I also started back at work 3 days later and had to explain all the band-aids. The scars are still there and I had to ask our engagement photographer to Photoshop them out of our pictures! Meanwhile, my roommate at the time still can't find the part of the sidewalk that I tripped on!

One of my first jobs after college was doing public relations for a nonprofit – part of my job was to also be a tour guide. We worked in a historic building and one day getting ready for a tour, I tripped and fell down the stairs onto the front door landing. Well management didn't want me to move until they were sure that I wasn't injured, so my entire tour group that was entering the building had to step over me. SO embarrassing!
Kara says
How do I not remember this? I have a similar story to falling down those stairs too. So funny now!
sarah c says
Omg falling down a whole flight of stairs. Im glad you were ok. At least Andrew does have a point though. It was bound to happen in those shoes that looks ouch or yup those look like I would fall down in and injure myself.

When I was younger like 8 or 9 , I will fall down on the same spot like 4 times which was my right elbow whenever i had ridden my bike . I still have a scar from it.

I feel so much better after reading these posts. I'm not the only one who notoriously falls. My husband always makes fun of me! I claim to be coordinated..he on the other hand disputes. 😉

One of my most embarrassing moments was in the Nordstroms bathroom. I was using the potty with my infant on my lap and my three year old standing beside me. The lady in the stall next to me was taking care of business. My three year old said, "Mommy, that lady tooted and it STINKS"!! Insert me dying.
Nikki says
Falling is always so embarrassing, especially when you are 16 and in high school! I just busted my butt a few weeks ago while I was cleaning the snow/ice off of my car. Naturally I blamed in on my husband because he didn't clean off my car…yup totally his fault! LOL 🙂

Most embarrassing moment as an adult: I was riding my bike in a long gauzy skirt (rally dumb, but it was hot out!). I had done this many times with no issue, but on this day I only made it about a block down the street when my skirt got caught in the chain. I stopped and tried to unravel it from the chain but it kept getting sucked in further and further. I realized it was not going to come out so I tried walking my bike back home, but I could not roll it. I tried to carry it, but my skirt was so caught that if I lifted the bike my skirt was getting pulled up with the bike. I was stuck.
I ended up having to call out to a random man doing yard work and asking him to cut my skirt out of the chain so I could go home. When he cut it, it ended up taking out so much of one side of the skirt that you could see my undies. I turned the skirt so the hole was on my hip and half carried, half dragged my bike back home.

I fall quite frequently, and believe me, when you get to be my age, it is difficult to get up! My most embarrassing moment came when I went into work very early one morning to work overtime. There was a guy who worked in another area of our building who I could tell kinda liked me. As I walked into the building, there he was in the lobby. He said, "Good morning, beautiful." I gave him the biggest smile I could and said good morning back to him. I noticed a funny look on his face, but didn't pay much attention until I got to my office and noticed I forgot to put my partial in my mouth that morning. There I was with my big smile, missing one of my front teeth! You're right. You can't make this stuff upQ!

Glad you are ok girl!!

Be careful, Shay!

Oh, MAN! That is so embarrassing! I remember falling as I got off a bus when I was in the 7th or 8th grade. I remember wearing this little green and white skirt that I thought was SO cute. Even more special, was that I always, ALWAYS wore green underwear every time I wore it…which, I guess was a treat for everyone who saw them that day. UGH.
Dianna says
I am sorry but that is so funny. A huge fear of mine is falling down stairs in front of other people. Or I also worry about doing it at work and hurting myself and waiting for someone to find me (hopefully without anything private showing in public!Ha!)
