Well friends, I am officially obsessed with the candied jalapeno.
Recently, I’ve been finding them in everything, so I decided to pick up a jar and use them at home too. So far, I’ve added them to a burger, tacos and my scrambled eggs. They’re just a sweetened (yet still hot) jalapeno pepper and can be bought in jars at the grocery store. I found them in two different stores both on the Tex-Mex aisle next to the chopped green chiles, canned jalapenos and taco fixings.
It’s hard to describe how good they are…you really just need to try them. They still have a nice kick but they’re mild enough that you can just pop one in your mouth and eat it plain too. Since Sunday is National Grilled Cheese Day, Ashby and I decided to make us some Candied Jalapeno Grilled Cheese Sandwiches for lunch while the big kids were at school. We used turkey bacon on ours, but you can totally use pork…or skip the bacon and keep this vegetarian…totally up to you. My little two year old looooooves spicy food, so it’s no big surprise that she ate this up…and mama did too!
Make these. I promise…you’ll love them! Happy Grilled Cheese Day!
This makes enough for one sandwich…multiply it out if you’re making this for more people.
Shopping List
2 pieces of bread (I used a crunchy French loaf)
a few nice slices of sharp cheddar cheese
2 pieces of bacon, cooked to crisp
6 or 8 candied jalapenos
Preheat your grill pan or a large skillet to medium-high. Lightly spray with cooking spray.
Assemble your sandwich (bread, cheese, bacon, jalapenos and top with bread), Grill up your sandwich until the cheese is nice and melted (flipping it over halfway). If you really want your sandwich to be decadent, add a little butter to the outside of both pieces of bread before grilling.
Once cheese is melted, slice and serve.
One of my favorite little restaurants in town makes their sandwich with pimento cheese…you can totally sub that for the sharp cheddar if you prefer.
Happy eating!

I have never heard of or seen them before. I'll be on the hunt now though. All of your ideas using them sound delish.

So are candied jalapenos different than jarred jalapenos? I'm assuming candied would be on the sweet side? I love the regular jarred jalapenos! My favorite thing to put them on is popcorn at the movies…and recently? They've been on my pizza…so yum! Thanks for the suggestion…this grilled cheese sounds awesome.

I love candied jalepenos. I had no idea you could buy them in the store. I use this recipe to can them with peppers from my garden. So yummy even over cream cheese with crackers! http://tastykitchen.com/recipes/canning/candied-jalapenos-cowboy-candy/
