So day four was one of my very favorite days:).
We drove from Bern to Interlaken and then went up in the mountains. It was gorgeous. I mean…hands down, the prettiest place I’ve ever been. It was so gorgeous that it didn’t even look real…it looked like a backdrop. God is the master artist and in my opinion, he did his best work in Interlaken, Switzerland :).
This was basically me all day.
Side note: we love, love, love The Sound of Music over at our house. A few times a year, we even have The Sound of Music nights where we order pizza and watch it as a family. Any of us could belt out a tune from the movie if asked…we’re pretty obsessed. So, even though that was Salzburg, Austria and we were in Switzerland…the setting looked similar and we sang many a tune on this day. The funny part is when I got back home and Erika asked me what my favorite part was and I told her about this day, she said, “I bet you sang a lot of Sound of Music songs.”. #sheknowsmesowell #noshame #thehillsarealive
When we arrived in Interlaken, we stopped at a grocery store to get picnic stuff. Love these girls!
The Shulls at the base of the mountain. Interlaken is the city at the base and then you take big gondolas or funiculars up to the cities on the side (there were four).
I mean, gorgeous, right?
I looked down in one of the gondolas and saw this. Look at her arm around her big brother. Melt my heart.
Lots of fun!! We stopped in each city and walked around. They are amazing built up there on the side of the mountain. Just spectacular! We enjoyed our picnic and the view :).
When you’re as high as the clouds…
Each little town had a park and we stopped to play at each of them. I love their big grins here.
This girl had a BLAST!
Park zip lining :).
The mountain behind Kensington is the tallest mountain in the Swiss Alps.
They had this map right there to prove it :). It’s the Jungfrau.
To get to the top town, we had to take a funicular (like a train going straight up a mountain). This is our decent down…a-mazing!
The girls got matching sister necklaces in one town :). It was just the nicest day outside with my people.
We left Interlaken around 5:30 and drove back to Bern for dinner…
…my handsome men at dinner.
I mean…how could you not love you some Ashby?!
Walking back to the hotel, we saw kids playing in this fountain area where the water sprayed up from the ground. My kiddos had a blast playing in the freezing cold water!
And that was Day Four :).
Day Five…
We spent Day Five in Lucerne, Switzerland!
Just another day enjoying a lovely Swiss town…eating lots of Swiss food…touring lots of Swiss churches/museums/stores/activities…with my loves.
Lucerne is home to one of the largest wooden bridges in all of Europe, so of course, we walked across it and took in the view!
The big kids got Swiss watches…Swatch Watches :). One child learned how to tell time quickly and the other child just wanted a pretty accessory…you decide which is which…
Andrew and I knew we wanted a cuckoo clock on this trip to bring home…and we found the perfect one. Smith was super pumped about this clock :).
Hey Lucerne! We loved you!
We went back tired and ready for bed. The next day, we moved to the other side of Switzerland and checked out Lake Geneva.
On my foodie blog today…
…a Lemon Berry Trifle for your Wednesday. Simple and delicious…my two favorite things!

I had a blast from the past when you talked about the Swatch watches! I had to BEG for one for months, but I finally broke my parents down! 🙂 The pic of Ashby with her arm around Smith is just the sweetest thing EVER. And the pics from today are absolutely gorgeous.

The Jungfrau is actually only the tallest in the Swiss Alps. There are others taller throughout Europe. Just wanted to share. 🙂

Your pics today brought me back to our visit to Switzerland and Interlaken. It's literally one of the prettiest places on earth! We paraglided off a mountain when we were there 🙂 Did you stop in the town of Grindewald? That's the town we stayed in and it's the prettiest little town ever.
Lauren says
Wouldn't it be great if they had slides on the way down the mountains!?
This is such a beautiful vacation!

We are on furlough from our work in Zambia at New Day Orphanage and my husband and I stopped for a 4 day trip in Switzerland on our way home! (Aug 6-10). We did Zurich, Bregenz, Austria, and Lindau, Germany. We will definitely have to go back with our kids and do Interlaken!! Your post made me laugh because when we were in Austria I sang The Sound of Music all day long and called my husband "Gey-org" all day. 😉
Robyn Marrie says
Love the pics! And I was brought back in time with the swatches too! I think I had one…and it was a hand-me- down! All the rage back in the day!

We went to Interlaken on our honeymoon. I sang Edelweiss when I saw it growing out of the side of a rock wall. Love me some Sound of Music!

Your photos brought back so many memories for me. My family and I visited Switzerland when I was younger. I distinctly remembered Lucerne because of the wooden bridge. I had a wonderful time and look forward to bringing my own family there some day.
Smith and Kensington are so cute with their watches. My two little ones are the same way. One picked up on telling time quickly while the other just like it for the bling 🙂

Love your vacation posts! Switzerland is on my bucket list. Will you be doing a blog on how you travel with a family of 5 and advice on how you do it? We took planes and trains through Europe and you're driving. I would be terrified. I was hoping you could give details on how you travel, pack, where to stay, and the logistics of traveling between countries. I want to explore more, but doing with the whole family scares me.
Mix and Match Mama says
Driving is really pretty simple! We rented a car from Enterprise (so a US company), paid a little extra for their navigation and three carseats/booster seats and took off. Streets, exits, road sign are all clearly marked. As for Switzerland, it was just like driving in the US. We've also rented cars in The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Austria without any problems. This way, we can go at our own pace and see exactly what we want to see.
Cristin says
I am also interested in the car rental/crossing the borders/reading the signs portion of your trip. Its the way we like to travel, but it sounds intimidating.
skmanning says
You must show us where you hung the clock in your home!
Mix and Match Mama says
I've already taken like 20 pictures of my kids standing in front of it! Every hour when it goes off, they go bananas over it! I'll post a pic!
Janet says
Gorgeous mountains. The hills are alive for sure.

Love your vacation recap posts! Looks like a great trip! 🙂

I want to go to Switzerland so bad! Did you make all hotel arrangements yourself have an idea where you wanted to go while there/etc? Or wing it? Looks amazing!
Courtney says
WOW–what gorgeous pictures! And once I saw the cuckoo clock, all I could sing was "And up in the bedroom, an absurd little bird is popping up to say–Cuckoo! Cuckoo!" We're huge Sound of Music movie lovers as well! Did you get one of those awesome puppet theaters by chance while you were there too?!?
Keri says
The Berner Oberland is my favorite part of the world! I am glad to see you went to Gimmelwald and Murren. We spent four nights in Lauterbrunnen exploring both sides of the valley with many hikes and stops for drinks. The cliffs in Lauterbrunnen with all of the waterfalls are simply breathtaking! We loved Lucerne as well. It is such a gorgeous city.
Caroline @ In Due Time says
Interlaken is THE best!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
We rented them as well! They were just like the US ones and fit nicely in our car (we happened to have rented a Volkswagon). We requested them when we made our rental car reservations.

Can you please adopt me and my family? 🙂 Your vacations look anazing!!

My heart skipped a beat when you mentioned Interlaken, the one and only time i've visited switzerland that is where we stayed and i want to go back every year! It is quite honestly my favourite place on earth! the Jungfrau is an amazing experience too, it really feels like the top of the world (although the queue for the last train down was more like a cattle market). I need to go back, a quick weekend anniversary trip to Vienna, Austria for the Christmas markets will have to give me my sound of music fix for now!
Morgan says
It's so gorgeous there! You're definitely inspiring me to plan a Europe trip sooner than later. I'll have to reference your older posts about traveling to Europe with toddlers! I have to say – I just love it that you guys brought a cuckoo clock home! Something we'd totally do.
Denise Ross says
Loving travelling vicariously through you. Travelling through Europe is on my bucket list too, and I've always wanted a cuckoo clock too. My parents had one and I loved hearing it every hour.
Amanda & Jerrod Carpenter says
Would you recommend the chicco stroller thats in your pictures?
Aubrey says
I love Interlaken! It's definitely one of the most beautiful places I've been too. Your cuckoo clock made me laugh. They say when you live in Germany you either leave with a cuckoo clock or a baby. Let's just say I don't have a cuckoo clock. 🙂
Dale Docken says
What a wonderful vacation. The Sound of Music is my favorite film of all time. Switzerland is beautiful. It's on our bucket list. You have been truly blessed by God. Thank you for sharing your pictures with us.

I’ve been following your blog for a long time, but now that my husband and I are going to London, Munich and Zurich in a few weeks, I re-visited this post. We are going for our 10 year anniversary without our 3 small children, so I may have a nervous breakdown! Anyway, I have a quick question – we are debating doing only a carry-on. But what about our souvenirs?? Did you have that awesome clock shipped home or did you carefully pack it in your luggage? Thank you!
