I’m linking up with Andrea today for Show & Tell Tuesday and today is…back to school traditions!
I’m actually really excited about this link up because we need ideas at the Shull house! So far, we only have a couple of traditions…but we would love some more! I can’t wait to look through the link up and see what you guys are doing. Also, please feel free to comment below and share what you and your family do for back to school traditions. I’m totally needing the help!
Last year, we did this…
Kensington requested green pancakes for breakfast (why not?!?).
We took our annual front door pic :). Andrea gave me this sign a few years ago and they’re available on Etsy if you need one. Look at my kindergarten girl there!!
We took a picture of her big girl back pack…
…and then dropped her off as a family.
I also asked her these questions on her first day…
1. How old are you?
2. What is your favorite color?
3. What is your favorite food?
4. What is your favorite TV show?
5. What is your favorite holiday?
6. What is your favorite thing to do with Mom?
7. What is your favorite thing to do with Dad?
8. What is your favorite thing to do with Smith?
9. What excites you the most about having Ashby home?
10. What are you most excited about this year in kindergarten?
11. What are you most nervous about this year in kindergarten?
12. What do you want to be when you grow up?
13. What is your favorite movie?
14. What is your favorite toy/stuffed animal?
15. What is your favorite thing to wear?
16. Who are you going to marry when you grow up?
17. What are you going to name your kids when you grow up?
(You can see her cute little answers here.)
After school, I had her favorite cookies waiting and we sat at the bar and talked about her first day.
That’s what we’re doing around here. I cannot wait to read your suggestions and ideas!!
Also, you can find my Back to School recipes here.
And here’s my Back to School Pinterest board…
Next time on Show & Tell Tuesdays, we’re showing you who we were in high school!
And to see posts from the past…
(I was in China for the first two, so I wasn’t able to participate.)
And speaking of Back to School traditions…
…hop on over to my foodie blog today!! I’m collecting ideas for school lunches. Help me please! I’m hoping we can all share some suggestions for lunchbox goodies. Click here to give and/or receive lunchbox ideas.

So I cannot find that sign since the move! I'm going to need to figure it out fast because we need it SOON! And I can't get over how much more grown up K looks in just one short year. WHAH! 😉

I am SO stealing those interview questions to use with my little guy! That seems like just a great tradition to have and look back on for years. And I bet it's funny, too. Thanks for the great idea. Hope you all have a good week!

Every year we go to bath and body works and my daughter picks out a new mini hand sanitizer and rubber case to attach to her backpack. She always picks a cute little fuzzy animal shape. It may be a little random tradition, but my daughter gets so excited to pick…it only takes her about 30 minutes to decide;)
Erika Slaughter says
Girl! So thankful I get to do life with you! It's fun getting to make these memories with our kiddos together!!

Every year we go to eat Mexican food as soon as school is out like 3 pm. My kids are in different buildings now so it is a cool way to just chat about the day. Plus the kids are ALWAYS hungry. BTW – My daughter started this tradition her first day of kindergarten. She is our oldest and we were so excited to hear every detail. When we picked her up and asked her to tell us everything, she replied "for Mexican food." Clearly they learned about extortion. It was awesome then so we have just kept it up and that same girl is starting 8th grade in a few days. We will hear all about her and her brother's (5th grade) day over tortillas and salsa.
Jola Mochoge says
So precious time does fly we have to cherish the memories.
My dad used to take my brother and I to McDonald. We always said we would try something new, but they always ordered Big Macs and I got a fish sandwich. My dad passed away on the 20th of July this year.
Those times are some of my fondest childhood memories. Trying to do the same with my daughter!

Love the green pancake request! lol! Too cute 🙂
Kristin McGeeney says
When you use the curlers in K's hair, do you put any product on it in the morning or just pull some back out of her face? It looks so tamed. Well…tamer than when I do the same style on my sweet daughter. Thanks!
Kristin McGeeney says
For some reason, we have tie dyed t shirts/socks/underwear/etc. the weekend before school starts for the past 3 years now. Not sure how it happened that way, but hey who's to stop a tradition! Can't wait to do it again this year!

I hope we get an Ashby update tomorrow – I've been looking forward to reading it all morning!

We always have freshly baked chocolate chip cookies made when he comes home. There's just something about a homemade cookie that makes everything better!
Renee King says
Once school starts (which is after Labor Day for us), I'm all about Sunday night being my food prep day for cookies, snack mix, and on-the-go breakfast ideas. Here are two of my girls favorites: http://www.blessthismessplease.com/2013/08/homemade-granola-bar-recipes.html and http://www.the36thavenue.com/baked-oatmeal-bars/#_a5y_p=3254264 The snack mix favorite has Cheerios, Kix, pretzels, chocolate chips, butter and honey and is an old Parents magazine recipe I have taped to an index card. My girls still request it for the school year and my oldest will be a junior in high school.

My daughter starts Kindergarten this year!! (insert sobs!) Question on pb backpack- you said it was a small right? Is it big enough to fit a binder/folder?
KRISTIN TATE says
Some our back to school traditions are the night before his big day he chooses what we have for dinner and we celebrate with party plates and cups. Also, we read The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn, and pray over him and his backpack as a family. He is going to 1st grade this year, hope y'all have a wonderful school year. Prayers.
marla says
My boys are now 20 & 22!! Makes my stomach drop to write that. Anyway, we also read the Kissing Hand before the first day of school for many years. Love that story and cherish the memories!
Whitney Woolley says
We have a tradition where I live for the mom's on the first day of school. We drop our kids off then gather at a home for a prayer breakfast for our kids and the teachers. We also write cards to our kids teachers to let them know that we are thankful for them and that we will be praying for them throughout the year. As a mom, I have found that I have first day jitters too and it helps that first day to go by so much quicker and it's very comforting to have your friends with you covering the school and our kids in prayer!
Ashley Kent says
That is just too sweet. I'm sure those teachers appreciate y'all so much!!

Matching bracelets. A big one for mom and a small one for daughter. Search Pinterest , I think there's a poem that goes with it. You could even make a bracelet

Hi Shay and fellow readers! My pastor just wrote a book called "The Daniel Prayer for Parents" and it became available today! It focuses on praying for your child's good health, educational excellence, resolve to serve God, divine favor, and supernatural promotion and influence. It would be a great August read to prepare for your kids starting back to school. Please check it out on Amazon! http://t.co/nWStxOWWnI http://www.thedanielprayer.com

Ahh! My son starts kindergarten this year and Mama has been crying about it since last year! However, I'm trying to just think of fun things instead of being sad. We are hosting a little hot dog cookout for a few families with kids going to kindergarten. The night before, we will lay out our new first day outfit and read the Night Before Kindergarten. I've ordered some jumbo sized gold foil balloons with a K and a 5 to take pictures with!! Trying to make it as fun and exciting of a day as possible- even though I know I will cry my little heart out- I even cried at Target while getting school supplies!!
Mama Of Boys says
OMG so cute!! We are about to have our very first day of Kindergarten over here (well, in another 5 weeks!) and I am all excited and also terrified. How can he possibly be big enough for SCHOOL?? I will be following the comments on this post for ideas on how to celebrate and mark the occasion xx
Leigh Clark says
So cute! Will be so much with fun two in school this year!!
Kathy Stevens says
On the last day of summer, I always buy a piñata from Target and fill it with pencils, erasers, little notebooks, post-its, hand sanitizer, etc.. and let the kids have at it! It's a good way to end the summer with a bang!
Beautifully Seaside // Formerly Chic Coastal Living says
That's so sweet! I like to have a favorite treat waiting for them when they get home on the first day. I'm sure you're enjoying all of these precious moments! XOXO

We have ice cream for breakfast on the last day of summer break. My kids, 13 year old triplets and an 11 year old (as well as an 8 month old!), talk about this tradition and look forward to it every summer! Your children are precious!

We do special breakfast, and after school treat….last year we went for smoothies and this year we did Dilly bars at DQ 😉 love all the ideas!
Lisa Nortman says
When my girls were younger I put a simple note in their lunch every day. Some days it was a word scramble about an upcoming exciting event and they always got to choose a favorite meal for supper. When they began driving to school, I put a bag of treats on the car seat for the first day…decorated bag full of snacks, gum, pencils, pens notepads, fun lip gloss or Chapstick and always Tide to go pens or shout wipes! Then college came and more cute school supplies, planners, energy bars and trail mix were added. My oldest is beginning her fourth year of teaching 1st grade and my youngest is starting her first year teaching 2nd grade…both still live at home, and the traditions continue and this year I have added your suggestion of Evian mineral face spray for those hot days after recess!! And yes, I still take their picture on the first day of school:) And this year, for the first time in years, they have the same first day at the same school they both attended as students, but now as teachers!
You all have so much to look forward to…. so don't be sad. It just gets better and better and more fulfilling. When people asked me when they were graduating high school if I was sad, I said no, because I was there for all of it…no regrets…didn't miss a thing and I still yet have so much to look forward to…the Good Lord willing:)

love that you still take their picture on the first day!
