I’m so excited!! Today’s the first day of mine and Erika’s new link up STRANDED!
We started talking about things we couldn’t live without and thought…why not make it into a link up? Each month will have a different topic (see below for all of the topics) and today, we’re blogging (and hopefully many of you are too!) what three things out of our medicine cabinet we would take if we were stranded on a deserted island.
Let me be clear.
I would not fair well stranded on a deserted island.
Andrew would immediately get to work, build a village, roads, bridges…he’d probably figure out how to create electricity, clean water and indoor plumbing…but I would be in the fetal position. The entire time.
So…for those rare moments when I find myself out of the fetal position, here are the three things from my medicine cabinet that I cannot live without and would take (and narrowing it down to three was hard!)…
Coconut Oil.
I’m going to need a Costco size jar though…
I used to live and die by Vaseline, and even though I still love Vaseline, coconut oil has replaced it in my medicine cabinet. Yes, I keep coconut oil in my bathroom. Coconut oil does EVERYTHING. It takes off makeup (even eye makeup without irritating your eyes!), it moisturizes (great for body lotion!), it makes your hair soft (hello stranded on an island hair), soothes cuts, scrapes and sunburns (#islandlife) and…if I were to get hungry, it tastes good spread on a piece of toast (or whatever I mange to find on that island). I love coconut oil.
The one thing it doesn’t do though…
…is give me SPF.
I would take sunscreen and as you guys know…this Clinique City Block is my favorite for my face (it doubles as a primer). I’m sure to burn (and still worry about skin cancer) on an island, so I would need to be slathering my face with this stuff several times a day.
A toothbrush.
Because…ugg…I would need to be able to properly brush my teeth with a toothbrush. I’m hoping someone else on the island brings toothpaste, because this is my third pick and I’m happy to share toothpaste, but I’m not sharing a toothbrush.
Those are my three things from my medicine cabinet if I’m stranded on a deserted island: Coconut Oil, Sunscreen and a Toothbrush! What would you bring? I’d LOVE to know!! Comment below (or link up!) and share this with us! What would you bring from your medicine cabinet?
And to see the other topics for the rest of the year…
…tomorrow is National Pecan Day and I’m celebrating with both sweet and savory recipes!
See them all here.

Oh no!!! I forgot a toothbrush!! I was too worried about my hair and some moisturizer lips!! Hahahaha!! So glad it's hypothetical. I'd be in major trouble!!
Sheaffer {Pinterest Told Me To} says
Well, that does it. I'm getting some coconut oil today. I can hardly wait to put it on my hair and my toast.
Melanie says
Laughing out loud!!!! 🙂
Narci says
Wait, your items were so smart! I'm laughing that you are bringing a toothbrush, but I'm bringing eye masks! Clearly, you'd be much better prepared!! Haha!! Love Coconut oil, too!
Caravan Sonnet says
I love your items! And seriously how hard was it to pick just three items? Now I want to go back and edit my list because a tootbrush is a must! Here is hoping someone would have an extra one and toothpaste if I was stranded! Hahaha! Thanks for this fun link up!! It is delightful 🙂
Blessings, Rebecca 🙂
Laura says
Shay!! Why are you bringing coconut oil?? In my head this island has plentiful coconuts already and Andrew can MAKE you some coconut oil!! Haha!
Mix and Match Mama says
You are so SMART!!!!!!
Christina says
Did you know you can brush your teeth with coconut oil? You have to get used to the taste but it takes the plaque off really well. It will feel as clean as a dentist visit with one brushing! You're saved;)
Mix and Match Mama says
Woohoo! Now, I am SET!
Andrea K says
Love it! Shay did you see the new Disney cruise itineraries? Eek. I may have to try going on a cruise now!
Mix and Match Mama says
I have!!! So much fun!!
Cori Cane says
Do you put coconut oil on your wet or dry hair??
Mix and Match Mama says
Both! I put it on there dry before I swim (so that it protects it from the chlorine) and then I put it on there as a hair mask when my hair is wet and then wash it out later (five minutes later or even the next morning!).
Leigh (Balancing By Faith) says
Oh yes – toothbrush on the top of the list for me!! Ugh I cannot imagine not brushing my teeth!!!
Liz F. says
I can't believe I forgot sunscreen! I guess the aloe vera gel I DID remember to bring will be working overtime 😉 Liz @ familyoffoley.wordpress.com

This was such a fun link up!!! I thought about a toothbrush too!! Good pick. I think people brush their teeth with coconut oil too. (Oil pulling – I tried once and gagged big time) but in a pinch it would work!!
Donna says
No need for the toothpaste with the coconut oil! It might not be minty but coconut oil totally works as a toothpaste as well! 🙂
I don't think I could make it without a hair elastic to tame my mane, some sunscreen and a toothbrush (I'm going to hope there are coconuts on the island to use)!
Lindsay at Lindsay'sSweetWorld says
Coconut oil is a good one since it's so versatile! I would have never even thought about that!
Janet says
In a pinch, you can make a toothbrush from a small twig. You peel back the outer bark to reveal the soft fibers. If you are in luck, you will find a spice tree of sorts for flavor.
The Queen says
I cheated and made toothpaste/toothbrush one items – I love a good 2fer deal! Super fun link-up!
Dana says
I am going to buy a can of coconut oil today… haha! Had no idea of all those uses! And I'm with you on the toothbrush!

Life without a razor though?!! Ah.
Watching Survivor pains me when I see those armpits and leg hairs…
Queen In Between says
I had no idea all the good coconut oil brings to the bathroom!! I think you gals are going to have to add a 3 toiletries section because I need my toothbrush!!!!
E Star says
Have you used the coconut oil to shave with yet?? Life changing I tell you! I have rid my bathroom with so many products and replaced with coconut oil. I even feed it to my new lil puppy to help his dry skin. I am an addict!

Apparently, you don't keep your razor in your medicine cabinet. 🙂
Nathalia Washington says
Hey Shay!
Could you one day please do a post on why use coconut oil and what you use it on. I want more details please before I just buy a jar. Thanks so much! I can't wait to see what books you pick because then I will know those are must reads if I haven't read them yet. ; ) No pressure! haha
Annie Malone says
Shay, I need to introduce you to my friend Danielle that started a company called Conscious Coconut! It's the first coconut oil in a tube (amazing for travel!) and for every tube sold a child is given a meal through feeding america food banks!!! Here's her site: http://consciouscoconut.com

Coconut oil! I almost forgot that!

THAT is an amazing list! Have you ever tried essential oils along with your coconut oil? I would have to figure out how to narrow down my essential oil cabinet if I were stranded because I am HOOKED. 😉
