Okay, now on to the book portion of today’s post. It’s my November Book Review!!
This month, I read one memoir and three Christmas books. I read #alltheChristmasbooks because I knew you ladies might want to read them this month. So, sit back, open your Amazon and start “adding to cart” 🙂 .
Several of you recommended Sisters First to me last month, so I read it first this month. As a native Texan, I’ve always kept my eye on the Bush twins. I am exactly one month older than them to the day, so we were always in the same grade growing up here in Texas, and they were always kind of like the “first daughters” of our state. I thought this book was sweet. It’s all about sisterhood and since I don’t have any sisters, but I am raising sisters, I love to read about stuff like this. I really love to read about how sisters can be so different, but yet so close. That’s a life lesson this mama heart needs to hear on repeat. I thought the book was funny, endearing and I thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling. I also thought the book was honest about sisterhood and how it ebbs and flows, but it’s a bond that lasts forever. This was a sweet book that you might want to gift to your sister this holiday season.
You know how much I love me a Nancy Thayer book…and this holiday one did not disappoint! A Nantucket Christmas is a sweet little fictional tale set during the holiday season on my favorite island of Nantucket. This book has all the makings of a holiday novel: lots of yummy references to food, a little family conflict, an unexpected twist and a happy ending. You can’t ask for more than that, right? The main character is dealing with her new hubby’s married daughter for their first Christmas together and well, as you can imagine, things don’t go as planned. This little read was easy to breeze through and made me happy. It’s a simple little book to put you in the holiday spirit!
I think this might be my favorite of the three Christmas novels! Merry and Bright was very much like the movie You’ve Got Mail. It’s about a girl and guy who meet on the internet and don’t realize that he’s the mean boss and she’s the sweet employee. I loved every turn of the page. This novel takes place in Seattle and not only are the main characters likable, but the secondary characters are too (her family and the other co-workers). This one was just sweet. If you love those Hallmark Christmas movies like me, you will love this one!
My fourth and final book this month was Christmas Bliss. This novel is about two best friends (one about to be married and the other, about to have a baby). This story takes place in Savannah, Georgia (with some moments in NYC) and honestly, I thought it was going to end a little differently than it did, so you could say that this one had enough plot twists to surprise me a bit. My favorite part about this book is that one of the main characters owns an antique store, and I loved reading about her finds (linens, silverware, place settings, etc). I thought she was charming, and I wanted to visit her shop. If you’re looking for sweet and easy to read, this one will do it for you! You’ll have this book read by tomorrow.
Okay, four books for the month! I’m already on my next book…Wonder! That will be the first book I review next month along with my 2017 Book Review (where I’ll name my FAVORITE book of the year!!). Right now, what would you say is your favorite book this year? I have a few I know I want to read in December, but who knows? Maybe you’ll convince me that I need to read something else! Please comment and share!!!

I think you have already read The Nightingale, so I highly highly suggest that you read Ready Player One!!! It’s going to be a Spielberg movie in March.
Emily Dunham says
I thought Merry and Bright was super cute. I am thinking they need to make it a Hallmark movie!! The play on names was super cute. I am in the midst of the Mary Kay Andrews book – curious about this twist you mentioned!!

My Kindle version came with the Julian chapter included, but I found out that not all do. I HIGHLY recommend you get the Julian chapter too, as it really helps wrap the book up from a different perspective!
Also- my daughter read it at the end of 3rd grade and I totally think K could handle it and be ready for it too! It is a novel that NEEDS to be known to our children.
ENJOY ??!

Angela says
UGG slippers and pjs?!!! Yes, please!! And thank you for posting that sweater!!! I just have to get it!! L
Stacy says
Reading “Before You Hit Send”. It’s about how we don’t think about what we are saying or writing before we speak or hit send. It’s so good.
Basic principle- before you speak/write think “is it true, kind, necessary and clear?”
Angela says
UGG slippers and pjs?!!! Yes, please!! And thank you for posting that sweater!!! I just have to get it! I love, love, love the gray!!!
LD says

Sarah Parsons says
I love Christmas books and those 3 are definitely on my list! Have you ever read the Christmas Chronicles by Jeff Guinn? There are 3 historical fiction novels that are so charming and put me right in the Christmas spirit each year when I read them. The titles are “The Autobiography of Santa Claus”, “How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas”, and “The Great Santa Search”. The third was my least favorite, but I really enjoyed them all. They were gifted to me and I have given them as gifts time and time again.
Brittany Hodges says
Mary Kay Andrews has a couple more books with those characters. Savannah Blues and Savannah Breeze. They are some of my favorites!
Kelli says
Wonder is an amazing book!!! The movie was wonderful as well!!
Linda Henderson says
I loved Wonder and hope you enjoy it too. The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick is one I recommend. Also, I get that Amazon is your go-to book supplier but I do worry that brick and mortar bookstores (which I love to visit) are struggling. The author events that they sponsor are wonderful.
Kelly Temple says
I have been looking for some good Christmas novels!!! So excited to read some of these on the list. Excited about the giveaway too!!! ?
Jennifer says
A book recommendation – The Light Between Oceans
Rhonda says
My 4th grade daughter and I both read Wonder three years ago, then passed it on to her middle school and high school age brother. After that I gave it to my niece and made my Mom read it. It’s a beautifully written book. The movie was so well done too. I “third” Eleanor Elephant is Completely Fine. It was a great book! I just finished The Hate You Give and it is probably one of the most important books I’ve read this year. My favorite this year I think has to be Far From the Tree by Robin Benway. It covers adoption, foster care, finding birth family and so many elements of what makes family family that as an adoptive mom I just loved it.
Keisha Dawson says
Always, always my favorite post! Sisters First is my next book in my “to read” stack! I can’t wait to read it. I’ve read so many great books this year! It’s so hard to choose! My top reads were Cancel the Wedding, The Secrets of Midwives, and The Language of Flowers. They were all so incredibly good and so very, very different from each other.
Heidi says
I have been gifted a few gifts over the years and some stand out .. my kitchen aid was one but my ugg slippers are probably my most favourite. I got them last year and I have worn they every single Day!!!!
Rhonda says
Ugh! Auto Correct! It’s Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and I also meant to say “brothers” on my previous comment. Both my middle school son and high school son read Wonder very quickly and thought it was well done.
Angela hunter says
I’m a mom to 6 kids and this would be such a awesome treat, uggs and pjs I love it!
Joanne Klein says
I know it’s an oldie but you have to read Love Story by Erich Segal. It’s written so beautifully but get your Kleenex ready. It’s a quick read but well worth it. My son is not much of a reader but he needs a book for his grade 9 independent study. From reading the comments, Wonder might be a good choice. I’m glad I checked these comments today. Thanks everyone!
Kristen says
Just finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completly Fine and although it took me a few chapters to really get into it, it was a great book that I keep thinking about!
Buckley says
Me too!!!
I miss Eleanor… I hope we get a sequel!!
Julie says
Have you read The Nightingale? I didn’t see it on your 2017 review but it’s older so you might’ve read it before this year. Anyway I just finished it and it was SO GOOD. Highly recommend!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes!! I loved that one!!
Kristi says
My favorite pajamas by far!! I get so excited when it’s cold enough to wear them.
As for books, I just finished Beartown and loved it. Other favorites this year areThese is My Words, Before We Were Yours, and a couple of Diane Chamberlin books-The Midwife’s Confession and Necessary Lies
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
I just finished Jenny Hale’s “We’ll Always Have Christmas” and it got such good reviews that I figured I’d love it. And the cover of it was so cute! I could not wait for it to be over though. It was like a really really long, predictable Hallmark movie except it wasn’t funny or very charming. It was, at best, fine. I had Christmas Bliss on my list. I will choose that one next. I read Savannah Blues and Savannah Breeze and love those characters!
That Inspired Chick

Have you read The Shack? It is sad, but SO good. For a happier, inspirational book I love “Love Does” by Bob Goff! Very interesting hearing about his life and how he started his Love Does Organization. Also, I loved your Instagram post about Miss Ashby this morning. So sweet and courageous.
Olivia says
Wonder is amazing! I recommend reading The Julian Chapter when you are done!!! As a former 4th grade teacher I LOVE reading this genre. Juvenile fiction is pretty spectacular!

Cher Rezac says
I love reading all your favorites! They quickly become mine!!!
Courtney says
I read ‘A Christmas Wedding’ by James Patterson. I also read ‘Too Late’ by Colleen Hoover. I DO NOT recommend it. It was horrible. Right now I’m catching up on the shopaholic series and reading ‘Shopaholic to the Stars’ by Sophie Kinsella.
Laura E Fredlund says
I’ve read many good ones this year, but my favorite would have to be Edenbrooke. I stayed up until 2am to finish it. ? And I love my sleep, I just HAD to get to the ending and it was not disappointing one bit.
Amanda @ Cupcake N Dreams says
Sister’s First is on my list after I saw the Bush daughters on the Today show promoting it! How did I miss Nancy Thayer’s A Nantucket Christmas too?! Thanks for the book reviews, Shay! Love those PJS!!

Nicole says
What size did you get in your Ugg slippers? Size up?
Mix and Match Mama says
True to size. They stretch with wear, so better to be a tad snug than big.
Melissa D. says
A few of my favorites this year have been, We Were the Lucky Ones (historical fiction(ish), Swear on This Life (young adult novel), and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.
Nikki Merritt says
What fun!!! I’m behind on your reading list … just about half way through Crazy Rich Asians.
Michelle Reiter says
Such an awesome gift and I’m adding this books to my reading list!! thanks!

They’re from a boutique in town called Primp.

Is it crazy that I just realized this year that Christmas chick lit was an actual thing ha??? I’m on book 3 of the Winter Street series and already have book 4 on hold at the library. I’m loving the holiday aspect at this time of year!
Kelly says
PJ’s and slippers, can’t go wrong there;). Thanks for posting the Christmas books, I was able to reserve all three of them from my library.
Elissa says
My favorite book of the year (so far) is The Garden of Small Beginnings by Abbi Waxman. I know you aren’t supposed to judge a book by the cove but this one pulled me in and the book was so sweet. It is a story of loss, love, sisters, mother and daughters, and community. It was a great read!
Julie says
Thanks for the book recommendations! I have been in a reading funk. Christmas books sound fabulous! Have put them all on my Kindle!!!

Hi Shay, have you ever done a post about hosting a great party..some tips and tricks.
I’m hosting Christmas this year for my family..15 kids (ranging from 2 to 13) and 18 adults. I’m overwhelmed just thinking about it. Thanks!
Colleen says
Best book I’ve read this year is Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. I had seen it pop up on a lot of “best book” lists and wasn’t sure what to expect but absolutely loved it and the characters in it. Reese Witherspoon is going to produce the movie. Just finished A Column of Fire by Ken Follett which was also amazing and absolutely love his writing and the series. If you haven’t read the series that starts with Pillars of the Earth you MUST! Such great books.
Sarah says
Wonder is a must read! Such a great message of kindness. I’m not sure about a favorite book, but Kristin Hannah is my current favorite author. I read Winter Garden and Night Road this month and loved both. They are stories that stuck with me long after reading. And of course the Nightingale is great too!
Mix and Match Mama says
I loved Winter Garden! I need to read Night Road now.
Leah Claire Hall says
My friends and I recently read Daring to Hope by Katie Davis Majors. She is the author to Kisses for Katie. It was all about finding God’s goodness in the broken and beautiful. It reminds you of God’s faithfulness through the hard times and good times in life. It was so encouraging and uplifting. It was a book I couldn’t put down, and never wanted it to end.
Kay says
You MUST resd The Teagirl of Hummingbird Lane (it’s actually a really good audio book). It’s hard at the start but stick with it. It covers the life of a woman forced to give up her infant daughter in China. She is adopted by American parents and the story follows both lifes.
Sharon Sykes says
Just finished “My Not So Perfect Life” by Sophie Kinsella (of Shopaholic series). Loved it. I mean it’s not highbrow or anything but was super fun.
Mix and Match Mama says
I loved that one too!!
Danya Bell says
I just finished The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See. I loved this book! My grandparents are from China and it was amazing to feel transported to China to see how different parts of China are yet to be discovered even in the 1990s. It is about traditions, family and obligations. I know this book is fiction but I felt like I was seeing my grandparents relatives in this book. I started it on a flight and I couldn’t put it down!
Danya Bell says
Last Year I read “Kitchens of the Great Midwest: A Novel” by J. Ryan Stradal for book club. It follows the life of the main character from Birth to adulthood. Each chapter focuses on a person and their life and how it intersects with the main character told from their point of view with a sprinkle of midwestern food. I loved it! Another book that I read that I found interesting is Together Tea by Marjan Kamail about an Iranian-American mother and daughter and the cultural differences they have in a first generation american. It is about a mom, finding out who she is as a person and where her Iranian traditions fit in america and about her daughter and how she finds her way into adulthood (family, traditions and love).
Kelly says
Before we were yours was the book that stayed with me the most this year. Also, my Christmas book pick would be Christmas Bells by Jennifer Chiaverini. Her historical fiction books are so good!
Traci says

Ready Player One, Elinor Eliphont is Completely Fine, and Garden Spells we’re my fave books of the year!! I’d love to hear your review of Garden Spells!! Don’t let the title throw you off, it is such a sweet and lovely book!!! Ready player One was completely out of my comfort zone but I LOVED it and have suggested it to so many people!! Love your book reviews 🙂
Stacey Jamieson says
I love your book reviews! I picked up Merry and Bright and read it that day!!
Kelsey Curry says
Christmas Bliss is actually part of a series. It’s the Weezie and Bebe Mysteries. The first one is Savannah Breeze and it is more of a mystery. I loved it. Definitely recommend!
Mary Jane McNeill says
Shay, do you wear your Ugg slippers outside, or are they strickly indoor slippers? I noticed the tread on the bottom and wondered.
And when are Andrew and your Dad going to be on the Amazing Race??? 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I wear my old ones outside, but my new ones inside. I sit on my couch and stuff with them on, so I wouldn’t want them to be dirty from outdoors.
Danielle K says
I love your book reviews and I have enjoyed many of the books that you’ve suggested. I think you would absolutely LOVE books by Sarah Jio. Her books are fictional but with a touch of history, romance and tradition. I’d start with The Bungalow and work your way through her other books if you like it. She’s a hidden gem! Happy holidays 🙂
