Friday Favorites

It’s the first Friday Favorites of 2018!  Just like every Friday, I’m linking up with three of my besties, AndreaErika and Narci today and sharing my favorite things from this week.

This weekend, my boys are back on the slopes and the girls are spending the three day weekend relaxin’ at home. #soundssonice  I hope you have cozy weekend plans too!

Here is my first batch of faves for the year…

I never, ever, ever thought I’d say this…but I am obsessed with my Kindle.

On our trip, I read two books with my Kindle and then had two books packed away.  When it was time to read my actual books, I was honestly kind of bummed.

Here is why I love the Kindle: First, it was so light to carry around with me.  I’m used to packing at least two novels in my carry on bag, and to just have a Kindle in there made my bag so much lighter!!  Second, I don’t need a light to read with it.  That one…became more important to me than I thought it would.  I could sit anywhere, by anyone at any time of day with my Kindle to read, but once I pulled out my real book, I needed to sit where there was light and it made reading in bed so much trickier too (because I had to have a bright lamp on instead of just me and the glow from my Kindle).

Thanks to intense polling of you sweet people…

…we picked Kindle Paperwhites and haven’t looked back.  I have one account for all three Kindles which means I can see what my kids are reading and how much they’ve read right from my tablet.  I’m obsessed.  I’m currently reading another book on there now…because I just can’t stop.  As a devout “I will never not read an actual book” person, let me apologize for being wrong 😉 .

Friends…I have an obsession with this…

Oh. My. Word.

Not since Blackfish have I been so obsessed with one subject matter.  (For those of you who don’t know, I watched Blackfish and then proceeded to talk about it to any and everyone because I could NOT stop processing that film.  It consumed me for months.)

Soooooo…the other day, I downloaded the A&E app on my phone and started watching Leah Remini’s series on Scientology…and well, if you know me in real life, then I’ve already talked to you about it 😉 .  I. CANNOT. STOP. TALKING. ABOUT. IT.  I’m obsessed.  I find the entire thing absolutely fascinating and cannot get enough.  I read her book back in 2016 and absolutely loved it.  The show is her interviewing other people (so not about her).  If you liked the book, you’ll love this (and vice versa).  I am sucked in!

It’s January which means…

…I wear my Uggs every day.  These right here are on major sale!  They come in two colors and this is my third winter with them and they’re still my favorite!!

I’m also loving my Ugg booties which are waterproof and cozy inside…plus, there are treads on the bottom to keep me from falling on slick days.  #yesyesyes

Look at this cute cup I just bought from my friend Amanda

…how perfect for winter is that?!  You can see her adorable Etsy shop HERE.  It just makes me happy 🙂 .

You know how much I love my Apple Watch (you can read my latest post about it HERE), but look how cute these bracelets are with it!!  Cute little layering pieces to wear every day.  From left to right, here they are BRACELET #1 (comes in multiple colors), BRACELET #2 (comes in 2 other colors), BRACELET #3 (also in 2 other colors).

I always write on the kids’ chalkboards with each season, but this time, I gave my chalk markers to Kensington and she did it instead…

…and they make me so happy!!  I will never do it again!!  I love walking by and seeing her artwork up there every day 🙂 .  Side note, Smith immediately told Kensington that she spelled “shining” wrong.  #becausebrotherspointouttheobvious Ha!   This just gives me all the happy feelings when I see it.

And speaking of happy…

this sweater makes me happy.

It comes in two other colors too!  It’s so soft and actually quite light (not bulky and heavy).

And then in the car, I realized I have my bracelets on again 🙂 .  Love them so much!

And finally…

20 Cozy Winter Soups

…if you’re looking for something warm and yummy to make this weekend, look no further than my 20 Cozy Winter Soups.  They’re all easy, quick and delicious!  You can see them HERE.

That wraps up this week’s favorites!  Have a wonderful weekend!! xo

I remember back when Uggs were super popular! I wanted a pair so much at the time, but never got them. Now I want a pair too but for the warmth!

  • Amanda @ Cupcake N Dreams January 12, 2018 at 5:12 am

Aw I like Kensington’s chalk designs too! What a great idea to ask her to do it. I think the baby it’s cold outside and the white sweater would bring some happy to these winter days. Have a relaxing weekend with the girls!

  • Elspeth Mizner January 12, 2018 at 5:45 am

Love the chalkboard ideas. Great way to get your kids involved and have fine with it.

  • Paula Hawthorne January 12, 2018 at 6:01 am

    I got a Paper White for Christmas….LOVE!

Scientology… OBSESSION! I get it. It is hard to warm my head around how full grown adults, intelligent fall for this. The how “mob” like feel is crazy. The deception so easily accepted. The years of battle wound scars for those getting out. The mind control. All so fasinating.

    • Paula Hawthorne January 12, 2018 at 6:29 am

      Wrap my head…

  • Narci Dreffs January 12, 2018 at 6:03 am

That sweater is darling on you!! And, how cute are those chalkboards?? Happy Friday, friend!! Xo

  • Jenna January 12, 2018 at 6:08 am

I think I need to watch that Leah Remini show because it sounds fascinating. I got on a roll this summer with reading books about women who had escaped polygamist cults and it sounds like this would be similar. Also, you should read the Sound of Gravel because I’m thinking you would find it riveting.

  • Erika Slaughter January 12, 2018 at 6:09 am

Yes!!! After hearing you talk about that show I cannot wait to watch! And I’m bummed you’re loving your Kindle so much-I’m losing my book swapper. Hahaha! Happy Friday!

    • Kim January 12, 2018 at 8:28 am

I too am a Kindle lover (pretty much read exclusively on Kindle now) but this is the one thing I miss! Being able to lend someone a great book!

      • Alicia Stonebraker January 13, 2018 at 4:46 am

You can still lend and borrow books with your kindle. Depending on the author.
        Love my kindle.
Here’s a website that has free books listed. Different genres and not just for the kindle.

    • Kelli January 12, 2018 at 9:18 pm

You can still swap books with kindles!!

  • Sheaffer Sims January 12, 2018 at 6:22 am

I am so impressed with K’s chalkboard art work!!!! And yeah, that sweater is darling.

  • Grace January 12, 2018 at 6:22 am

I love your watch at the end!! how frequently do you wear a regular watch since you have an apple one?

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 6:35 am

I wear my Apple Watch in my home every minute of every day. I would say one or two days a week, I”ll wear another watch outside of my house.

  • Dana January 12, 2018 at 6:29 am

I don’t know if you’ve stumbled across the statement that French women wouldn’t be caught dead in Uggs (I’ve seen that in at least one of those French lifestyle books), but I think it’s so funny that they are just now coming into fashion here. They are the old style chunky ones though and seem to be about twice the price. Random, but it always makes me think of you- you make them look so cute!!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 6:34 am

They’re just so warm and comfy! They’re hard to resist!! 😉

  • sydnee January 12, 2018 at 6:39 am

Kensington is so talented! You should capture a photo of her artwork every time before it gets erased.

OMG – your obsesion with Leah’s show and the impact she is making on those people is not alone!! I can’t get enough! It breaks my heart and gets me excited for thier futures in so many ways!!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 8:04 am

      I’m obsessed with her too 🙂 .

  • Alexis deZayas January 12, 2018 at 6:54 am

I bought a Kindle in November and felt the same way when I traveled this holiday season… it was great! I also love all of the deals I’m able to score on it 🙂 Heading to check out that sweater!

  • Kara January 12, 2018 at 6:57 am

I once sat next to an eye doctor on a flight with my kindle in tow. He was asking how I liked reading on it over an actual book. I said that I loved how fast I could read on it, much faster than a physical book. He said that your eyes adjust with every page turn and on a kindle they don’t adjust as much. I don’t know if it’s true….Just be careful. I am on my 3rd kindle because the previous two had minor accidents….I feel like an iPad is much durable.

  • Kristi January 12, 2018 at 6:59 am

That sweater is beautiful! What size do you wear? The website says true to size but it looks oversized on the website. Wondering if I should size down?

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 8:03 am

I bought xsmall and feel it’s very true to size.

  • Erin Port January 12, 2018 at 7:08 am

Love a good cozy sweater in the winter. We are using the “Baby it’s Cold Outside” theme for my sister’s winter baby shower. Love that cup! xoxo ERIN

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 8:04 am

      That’s adorable!!

  • Amy January 12, 2018 at 7:36 am

Wow I’m impressed…Kensington did a great job on the chalkboards.❤️ Oh I wish I could be artistic like that! 😊I just got an Apple Watch for Christmas, been looking for some stylish bracelets to help dress it up. 😉

  • KimW January 12, 2018 at 7:44 am

yikes! Sure wish that sweater wasn’t $128?!???

  • Kim Busman January 12, 2018 at 7:45 am

I keep hemming and hawing about biting the bullet and purchasing the Kindle. I am wondering if you all have cases for your Kindles? What are the biggest differences in the Kindle and the Kindle Paperwhite?

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 8:03 am

Yes, I just bought the Kindle cases off of Amazon in different colors. I like the paperwhite because there is no glare and it’s only for reading (we don’t have it hooked to wifi, so no one is distracted by other things). Plus, when I polled people on here, the Paperwhite won 🙂 .

  • Kara January 12, 2018 at 7:52 am

Hi Shay!!! First, love your sweet blog!!!! Quick question about your Kindle Paperwhites! My kids are the same age as yours and I am thinking about getting them each one! Does the Paperwhite have Audible or anything that will read aloud to them? I think they might like that option occasionally! I know you can download Audible on some Kindles? Also, do either of your kids have a favorite book or book series that you recommend? Thank You!!! Happy Friday!!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 8:02 am

I can’t say 100%, but yes, I believe you can download audio books.

    • Kim Busman January 12, 2018 at 8:58 am

I just read a comparison of the Kindles on Amazon and according to that, the regular Kindle has Audible available, but the Kindle Paperwhite does not allow that option. Hmmm…

  • Laci January 12, 2018 at 7:56 am

I think I need a kindle. My husband goes to sleep before me due to a crazy work schedule and I always want to read a book and not bother him with the lamp! Happy Friday!

  • Lindsay January 12, 2018 at 8:01 am

What kind of leggings are you wearing in #7? They look like the perfect length!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 8:02 am

They’re not leggings, they’re my AG jeans from Nordstrom!

  • Kelly January 12, 2018 at 8:03 am

I received my first ever pair of Uggs for Christmas. Love them! K’s art on the chalk boards is awesome, you have a little artist there:). Those bracelets went directly into my cart, now if that sweater would just go on sale:). Happy Friday, Shay!

  • Laura January 12, 2018 at 8:13 am

I live in Hemet…Neighbors to Scientology Gold Base….it’s very concerning to learn about there culture and think it’s in my backyard. We drive by regularly and I always say a prayer for those that might be trapped 😥

  • Annalisa January 12, 2018 at 8:17 am

On your Apple Watch…I have the same face as yours, but my question is how did you change your calorie goal?! I hate not hitting goals and mine prefilled to 800 and I can’t ever seem to hit that! I’d like to set a more realistic goal for myself and can’t figure out how to change it!! Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 8:30 am

You can do that through your health app, but every Monday morning, it prompts me to make a calorie goal for the week (by days). Have you done an apple watch app update lately?

  • Bailey Bryant January 12, 2018 at 8:17 am

Blackfish!! Yes! I still talk about it today. So sad. Scientology is crazy & I can’t hear enough of these people’s stories.

  • Abigail January 12, 2018 at 8:21 am

I know this doesn’t fit with Friday Favorites, but do you have shoe recommendations (or packing in general) for an Alaska cruise? Just found out we are going this July!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 8:30 am

Yay!! It was cold when we were there, so I wore my Uggs many days and then my Nikes other days (because we walked a ton!).

  • Lindsay Evans January 12, 2018 at 8:24 am

Love all your posts! Can we see your layout of your master closet? We are in the process of designing our master closet and need any tips!

  • Whitney Pegram January 12, 2018 at 8:31 am

That sweater looks so cozy!! And those chalkboards are perfect! Happy Friday!

  • Heather January 12, 2018 at 8:53 am

A documentary that made me think for days (…..months) was “Mommy Dead and Dearest”on HBO and Netflix’s ‘Making a Murder’. I have a thing for true-life crime where cases aren’t black and white.

  • Adrienne January 12, 2018 at 8:57 am

Good morning from California! If you liked Leah Remini’s book and the subject matter, give “Going Clear” a read. Super fascinating-I finished it in a day because I could
Not put it down!!! Thanks for sharing your favorites with us-I have found so many new favorites of my own with your help! 🙂

  • Emily January 12, 2018 at 9:08 am

My pink apple watch band is starting to look a little rough. Where did you get that cute white one? Was it easy to switch out the band? Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:50 am

      Sooooooo easy! From 🙂

  • Kim Busman January 12, 2018 at 9:09 am

Is there a particular chalk board paint/markers that you use? I am debating on a chalk board or a felt board and would like to do some comparisons before purchasing. Thanks!!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:50 am

      They’re Chalktastic!

  • Erin January 12, 2018 at 9:21 am

Yep. My husband and I are also obsessed with Leah Remini’s Scientology series. Eye opening for sure. I will refrain from commenting more, only with we were friends IRL so we could obsess over it together 😉

  • Kristy January 12, 2018 at 9:28 am

Where did you find those chalk markers? Do you find they erase as easily as regular chalk?

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:49 am

Amazon and no, you need to use a Magic Eraser to erase!

  • Meg January 12, 2018 at 9:33 am

I’m such a Leah fan- always have been but infinitely more after (obsessively!) watching her show and seeing how much good she is doing in that “community.” After reading her book and watching the show, I read a couple others on the topic because I just cannot wrap my head around it. “Beyond Belief” by Jenna Miscavige Hill in particular was shocking!

  • Elise January 12, 2018 at 9:39 am

I’m also obsessed with Scientology. Watch the documentary, “Going Clear”. It. is. mind. blowing. If you haven’t read Leah’s book, it is also a very interesting read.

  • Heather January 12, 2018 at 9:42 am

I love that sweater! What color polish do you have on in those pics?

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:49 am

      OPI Let’s Be Friends 🙂

  • Katherine January 12, 2018 at 9:46 am

Where is your watch from?? I love it!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:49 am

  • Amber January 12, 2018 at 9:50 am

Cute sweater, but yeah, out of my price range. Let us know if it happens to go on (major!) sale.

  • Susan Shelton January 12, 2018 at 9:54 am

My husband and I are obsessed with Leah’s show. My husband got the book “Ruthless”, written by Ron Miscavige, David’s father. He is planning to read it next week on our cruise. I have a feeling it will be a good one.

  • Ashlea January 12, 2018 at 9:58 am

Care to share the details of the black coat you’re wearing with your UGGS? Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:48 am

      The North Face 🙂

  • Lizzie @ This Happy Life January 12, 2018 at 9:58 am

So many awesome favorites!! I’ve always said I’d never use a Kindle and I’m thinking I need to re-think that one! The hubby does not like the bright light in his face every night LOL!! LOVE Amanda’s shop, so many awesome things!!

  • Christie January 12, 2018 at 10:02 am

Love your blog… can you link your watch at the end? Love it! Thanks

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:48 am

It’s not current, but I bought it at Nordstrom.

  • Katie January 12, 2018 at 10:12 am

Hi Shay! Have you ever linked your phone case? I just love it!!!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:48 am

      I have! It’s from Amazon!

      • Katie January 12, 2018 at 12:55 pm

Oh thank you!! I’ll search on your site! 😊

  • Amanda @ That Inspired Chick January 12, 2018 at 10:17 am

Thanks for sharing my cup, friend!! And Leah Remini’s show—yes!!! I watch it all the time too!! It really is fascinating how these people will freely give up their lives to this organization! So glad she is so bravely shining the light on what really goes on! That Inspired Chick

  • Mary January 12, 2018 at 10:43 am

I love your Tissot watch that you’re wearing in the last picture. Is this a men’s watch and wear did you purchase it?

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:48 am

I bought it from Nordstrom. I bought it in the women’s department, but I believe it goes both ways.

  • Kelsey Miller January 12, 2018 at 10:45 am

I love Leah’s show!! I am OBSESSED! I don’t understand how this craziness can still be happening. I read her book and was so fascinated and I just couldn’t stop. I just cannot believe the things these people went through and how others think it’s ok. It’s absolutely insane! I’m glad I’m not the only one obsessed!

  • Jess Olds January 12, 2018 at 11:20 am

Where are your rugs from in your closet? They are beautiful!!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:47 am

      Joanna Gaines 🙂

  • Kelly Franks January 12, 2018 at 11:21 am

I feel the same way about the Kindle. I was totally against using it full time however my husband surprised me and got me one for Christmas. Now I’m obsessed with it. I’ve already read two books this month. I also travel for work alot and this is so much easier than carrying an actual book.

  • Tina January 12, 2018 at 11:26 am

Now that you love your Apple Watch so much, do you find it hard to wear your other watches and be without it some days? I think I would love one, but I also spent a lot of money on my current watches that I swap out. I’m afraid I would stop wearing anything else.☺️

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 11:46 am

      I do…I love my Apple watch 🙂 .

  • Michelle Antunez January 12, 2018 at 11:43 am

I am with you on the whole kindle debate. My first one was gifted to me and I said I will never not read a book. I took it on my first trip and I haven’t bought a “real” book since. I’ve now upgraded to the Kindle paper white and it’s a preference but I’m not a fan of the blue light the fire gives off and it’s too much of an iPad to me. Also, Leah Remini’s show OMG!! I’ve been obsessed with it. You should watch Going Clear it has the same format. She is incredibly brave to be doing this show.

  • Morgan January 12, 2018 at 12:28 pm

The Scientology show is fascinating and heartbreaking!!! I think I’ve cried during every episode! I have family in Clearwater and we drive by the Scientology headquarters every time we visit…very eerie!

  • Kara T. January 12, 2018 at 12:31 pm

OH, how I love Leah Remini’s Scientology Documentary! It is amazing! I’m so glad people are getting out and making their families their priority! And I clicked on the UGGs link to find they are called “KARA”! I thought it was “meant to be”!I But, they are out of my size in black! Love all of your faves for the new year! I hope 2018 is a happy and blessed one for your family!

  • Andrea January 12, 2018 at 1:04 pm

Love your sweater! We are heading to Breck next month so I think I need to add it to my list of things to buy!

Totally random question, what do you have under your handbags on your closet shelves? I put the dust covers under mine for now wanted something more consistent in appearance.

    • Mix and Match Mama January 12, 2018 at 1:08 pm

      It’s just felt 🙂 .

      • Andrea January 12, 2018 at 1:58 pm

        Perfect, thank you!

  • Angela Ellingson January 12, 2018 at 1:19 pm

I need to give my kindle more of a chance.

  • Angela Ellingson January 12, 2018 at 1:21 pm

I’m still just buying the hard copies. The point about not needing a light is tempting though!

  • Sara January 12, 2018 at 1:52 pm

I got a Kindle Paperwhite as a Christmas gift from my husband and I too am obsessed! I still read some old-school books but I’m finding I like my Kindle way more than I thought I would.

  • Jacklyn January 12, 2018 at 2:54 pm

I watched season one of Leah Remini’s show in about two days!! I couldn’t turn it off. It is SO fascinating! My poor coworkers also had to listen to me talk about it for weeks afterward! Just realized there is another season out so I know what I’ll be doing this weekend. If you haven’t seen the Scientology documentary “Going Clear” you absolutely MUST WATCH! A lot of the people Leah interviews are in it and their stories are so crazy!

  • Bev January 12, 2018 at 5:48 pm

Hi Shay, I’m like you, do most of my reading on my iPad but was given the Bush twins book, Sisters First, from my own twin 😊 so I ordered this night light to keep from having to keep the lamp on:
It’s a soft light and clips to your book or even a magazine.

  • maria January 12, 2018 at 8:37 pm

Love the chalkboards. Are they regular chalkboards and do you use chalk pens?

    • Mix and Match Mama January 13, 2018 at 6:26 am

They’re regular chalkboards and I use those chalktastic chalk markers :).

  • Kimberly January 12, 2018 at 10:13 pm

Couple of closet questions… 1-how tall are your ceilings?! 2-have you or would you ever do a closet tour? We desperately need to redo ours and I’d love some inspirational ideas! 💖

P.S. — made your Taco Tortellini Skillet for dinner tonight and everyone (even the 1.5 and 3 year olds) loved it 😀

    • Mix and Match Mama January 13, 2018 at 6:25 am

Ah! Well, that makes me so happy! Okay…I don’t know how tall and perhaps? I’ll find out how tall and let you know!

  • Jessica January 13, 2018 at 12:01 am

I love Leah’s show. I have been obsessed since it first aired. I watched Blackfish but then I fact checked it and they lied so I wasn’t as obsessed about that. I love my Kindle.

  • Sarah N January 13, 2018 at 6:55 am

Watching Leah’s show and my heart is breaking. There’s a God-shaped hole in all of us…..
I keep thinking of Katie Holmes and Suri and I’m so glad she got out of there with her daughter.

  • Nichole January 13, 2018 at 7:07 am

I was totally shocked that you were hesitant to get a Kindle…I prefer reading on mine for the same reasons you mentioned. And with as much as you travel it seemed like such a logical jump! I also sometimes read REALLY long books (well over 1000 pages) and just holding something like that to read is a nightmare. I’m on my second…my first was from about six years ago and was before the Paperwhite…after my husband moved to the Paperwhite I had to have one too! I still read physical books sometimes, but I am a total Kindle fan.

  • Beth January 13, 2018 at 9:28 am

What colors are your bracelets? The link took me to a turquoise one and there are so many color options. Thanks in advance!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 14, 2018 at 5:22 am

      Mine is pyrite and gold!

  • Nicole January 13, 2018 at 3:12 pm

Hi Shay!! Super random, but you have the best taste in everything…I have to ask, what is the main beige paint color throughout your home? And is your trim white or off white? Thanks!!!

    • Mix and Match Mama January 14, 2018 at 5:20 am

Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige 🙂 . And my trim is white.

      • Nicole January 14, 2018 at 6:30 am

Thank you, thank you! Is the island in your kitchen a blue-ish color? Do you know that paint color too? Thanks! 🙂 Oh and PS. Last night I hosted dinner and everyone LOVED your Sweet Corn Chili and Cherry Berry Cobbler, they all left with your recipe! 🙂

        • Mix and Match Mama January 14, 2018 at 6:33 am

It is a Sherwin Williams mix of blueish/grayish colors (I’m sorry, I don’t know the names!) with a black glaze on top. And yay! That sounds like a great meal!!!

I use my Paperwhite all the time, but when I travel, I take my iPad mini 4 with me for email, etc…, and it has the Kindle app on it. So whatever book I’m reading on my Kindle, I sync it on the app on my iPad and then I don’t have to carry two devices (and their charge cords). So much easier! And I can control the brightness on the iPad as well.

Your daughter’s artwork is amazing! Love this post and especially those Ugg booties. Curious what size you order for Uggs? Are they true to size (I’m normally a 7) or should I go up or down a half size.
