Friday Favorites


It’s the first Friday Favorites of 2018!  Just like every Friday, I’m linking up with three of my besties, Andrea, Erika and Narci today and sharing my favorite things from this week.

This weekend, my boys are back on the slopes and the girls are spending the three day weekend relaxin’ at home. #soundssonice  I hope you have cozy weekend plans too!

Here is my first batch of faves for the year…

I never, ever, ever thought I’d say this…but I am obsessed with my Kindle.

Obsessed.

On our trip, I read two books with my Kindle and then had two books packed away.  When it was time to read my actual books, I was honestly kind of bummed.

Here is why I love the Kindle: First, it was so light to carry around with me.  I’m used to packing at least two novels in my carry on bag, and to just have a Kindle in there made my bag so much lighter!!  Second, I don’t need a light to read with it.  That one…became more important to me than I thought it would.  I could sit anywhere, by anyone at any time of day with my Kindle to read, but once I pulled out my real book, I needed to sit where there was light and it made reading in bed so much trickier too (because I had to have a bright lamp on instead of just me and the glow from my Kindle).

Thanks to intense polling of you sweet people…

…we picked Kindle Paperwhites and haven’t looked back.  I have one account for all three Kindles which means I can see what my kids are reading and how much they’ve read right from my tablet.  I’m obsessed.  I’m currently reading another book on there now…because I just can’t stop.  As a devout “I will never not read an actual book” person, let me apologize for being wrong 😉 .

Friends…I have an obsession with this…

Oh. My. Word.

Not since Blackfish have I been so obsessed with one subject matter.  (For those of you who don’t know, I watched Blackfish and then proceeded to talk about it to any and everyone because I could NOT stop processing that film.  It consumed me for months.)

Soooooo…the other day, I downloaded the A&E app on my phone and started watching Leah Remini’s series on Scientology…and well, if you know me in real life, then I’ve already talked to you about it 😉 .  I. CANNOT. STOP. TALKING. ABOUT. IT.  I’m obsessed.  I find the entire thing absolutely fascinating and cannot get enough.  I read her book back in 2016 and absolutely loved it.  The show is her interviewing other people (so not about her).  If you liked the book, you’ll love this (and vice versa).  I am sucked in!

It’s January which means…

…I wear my Uggs every day.  These right here are on major sale!  They come in two colors and this is my third winter with them and they’re still my favorite!!

I’m also loving my Ugg booties which are waterproof and cozy inside…plus, there are treads on the bottom to keep me from falling on slick days.  #yesyesyes

Look at this cute cup I just bought from my friend Amanda…

…how perfect for winter is that?!  You can see her adorable Etsy shop HERE.  It just makes me happy 🙂 .

You know how much I love my Apple Watch (you can read my latest post about it HERE), but look how cute these bracelets are with it!!  Cute little layering pieces to wear every day.  From left to right, here they are BRACELET #1 (comes in multiple colors), BRACELET #2 (comes in 2 other colors), BRACELET #3 (also in 2 other colors).

I always write on the kids’ chalkboards with each season, but this time, I gave my chalk markers to Kensington and she did it instead…

 

…and they make me so happy!!  I will never do it again!!  I love walking by and seeing her artwork up there every day 🙂 .  Side note, Smith immediately told Kensington that she spelled “shining” wrong.  #becausebrotherspointouttheobvious Ha!   This just gives me all the happy feelings when I see it.

And speaking of happy…

…this sweater makes me happy.

It comes in two other colors too!  It’s so soft and actually quite light (not bulky and heavy).

And then in the car, I realized I have my bracelets on again 🙂 .  Love them so much!

    Scientology… OBSESSION! I get it. It is hard to warm my head around how full grown adults, intelligent fall for this. The how “mob” like feel is crazy. The deception so easily accepted. The years of battle wound scars for those getting out. The mind control. All so fasinating.

    I think I need to watch that Leah Remini show because it sounds fascinating. I got on a roll this summer with reading books about women who had escaped polygamist cults and it sounds like this would be similar. Also, you should read the Sound of Gravel because I’m thinking you would find it riveting.

      I wear my Apple Watch in my home every minute of every day. I would say one or two days a week, I”ll wear another watch outside of my house.

    I don’t know if you’ve stumbled across the statement that French women wouldn’t be caught dead in Uggs (I’ve seen that in at least one of those French lifestyle books), but I think it’s so funny that they are just now coming into fashion here. They are the old style chunky ones though and seem to be about twice the price. Random, but it always makes me think of you- you make them look so cute!!

    I bought a Kindle in November and felt the same way when I traveled this holiday season… it was great! I also love all of the deals I’m able to score on it 🙂 Heading to check out that sweater!

    I once sat next to an eye doctor on a flight with my kindle in tow. He was asking how I liked reading on it over an actual book. I said that I loved how fast I could read on it, much faster than a physical book. He said that your eyes adjust with every page turn and on a kindle they don’t adjust as much. I don’t know if it’s true….Just be careful. I am on my 3rd kindle because the previous two had minor accidents….I feel like an iPad is much durable.

    I keep hemming and hawing about biting the bullet and purchasing the Kindle. I am wondering if you all have cases for your Kindles? What are the biggest differences in the Kindle and the Kindle Paperwhite?

      Yes, I just bought the Kindle cases off of Amazon in different colors. I like the paperwhite because there is no glare and it’s only for reading (we don’t have it hooked to wifi, so no one is distracted by other things). Plus, when I polled people on here, the Paperwhite won 🙂 .

    Hi Shay!!! First, love your sweet blog!!!! Quick question about your Kindle Paperwhites! My kids are the same age as yours and I am thinking about getting them each one! Does the Paperwhite have Audible or anything that will read aloud to them? I think they might like that option occasionally! I know you can download Audible on some Kindles? Also, do either of your kids have a favorite book or book series that you recommend? Thank You!!! Happy Friday!!

      I just read a comparison of the Kindles on Amazon and according to that, the regular Kindle has Audible available, but the Kindle Paperwhite does not allow that option. Hmmm…

    I received my first ever pair of Uggs for Christmas. Love them! K’s art on the chalk boards is awesome, you have a little artist there:). Those bracelets went directly into my cart, now if that sweater would just go on sale:). Happy Friday, Shay!

    I live in Hemet…Neighbors to Scientology Gold Base….it’s very concerning to learn about there culture and think it’s in my backyard. We drive by regularly and I always say a prayer for those that might be trapped ?

    On your Apple Watch…I have the same face as yours, but my question is how did you change your calorie goal?! I hate not hitting goals and mine prefilled to 800 and I can’t ever seem to hit that! I’d like to set a more realistic goal for myself and can’t figure out how to change it!! Thanks!

      You can do that through your health app, but every Monday morning, it prompts me to make a calorie goal for the week (by days). Have you done an apple watch app update lately?

      Yay!! It was cold when we were there, so I wore my Uggs many days and then my Nikes other days (because we walked a ton!).

    A documentary that made me think for days (…..months) was “Mommy Dead and Dearest”on HBO and Netflix’s ‘Making a Murder’. I have a thing for true-life crime where cases aren’t black and white.

    Yep. My husband and I are also obsessed with Leah Remini’s Scientology series. Eye opening for sure. I will refrain from commenting more, only with we were friends IRL so we could obsess over it together ?

    I’m such a Leah fan- always have been but infinitely more after (obsessively!) watching her show and seeing how much good she is doing in that “community.” After reading her book and watching the show, I read a couple others on the topic because I just cannot wrap my head around it. “Beyond Belief” by Jenna Miscavige Hill in particular was shocking!

    My husband and I are obsessed with Leah’s show. My husband got the book “Ruthless”, written by Ron Miscavige, David’s father. He is planning to read it next week on our cruise. I have a feeling it will be a good one.

    I love Leah’s show!! I am OBSESSED! I don’t understand how this craziness can still be happening. I read her book and was so fascinated and I just couldn’t stop. I just cannot believe the things these people went through and how others think it’s ok. It’s absolutely insane! I’m glad I’m not the only one obsessed!

    I feel the same way about the Kindle. I was totally against using it full time however my husband surprised me and got me one for Christmas. Now I’m obsessed with it. I’ve already read two books this month. I also travel for work alot and this is so much easier than carrying an actual book.

    I am with you on the whole kindle debate. My first one was gifted to me and I said I will never not read a book. I took it on my first trip and I haven’t bought a “real” book since. I’ve now upgraded to the Kindle paper white and it’s a preference but I’m not a fan of the blue light the fire gives off and it’s too much of an iPad to me. Also, Leah Remini’s show OMG!! I’ve been obsessed with it. You should watch Going Clear it has the same format. She is incredibly brave to be doing this show.

    The Scientology show is fascinating and heartbreaking!!! I think I’ve cried during every episode! I have family in Clearwater and we drive by the Scientology headquarters every time we visit…very eerie!

    OH, how I love Leah Remini’s Scientology Documentary! It is amazing! I’m so glad people are getting out and making their families their priority! And I clicked on the UGGs link to find they are called “KARA”! I thought it was “meant to be”!I But, they are out of my size in black! Love all of your faves for the new year!     I got a Kindle Paperwhite as a Christmas gift from my husband and I too am obsessed! I still read some old-school books but I’m finding I like my Kindle way more than I thought I would.

    I watched season one of Leah Remini’s show in about two days!! I couldn’t turn it off. It is SO fascinating! My poor coworkers also had to listen to me talk about it for weeks afterward! Just realized there is another season out so I know what I’ll be doing this weekend. If you haven’t seen the Scientology documentary “Going Clear” you absolutely MUST WATCH! A lot of the people Leah interviews are in it and their stories are so crazy!

    I love Leah’s show. I have been obsessed since it first aired. I watched Blackfish but then I fact checked it and they lied so I wasn’t as obsessed about that. I love my Kindle.

    I was totally shocked that you were hesitant to get a Kindle…I prefer reading on mine for the same reasons you mentioned. And with as much as you travel it seemed like such a logical jump! I also sometimes read REALLY long books (well over 1000 pages) and just holding something like that to read is a nightmare. I’m on my second…my first was from about six years ago and was before the Paperwhite…after my husband moved to the Paperwhite I had to have one too! I still read physical books sometimes, but I am a total Kindle fan.

          It is a Sherwin Williams mix of blueish/grayish colors (I’m sorry, I don’t know the names!) with a black glaze on top. And yay! That sounds like a great meal!!!

    I use my Paperwhite all the time, but when I travel, I take my iPad mini 4 with me for email, etc…, and it has the Kindle app on it. So whatever book I’m reading on my Kindle, I sync it on the app on my iPad and then I don’t have to carry two devices (and their charge cords). So much easier! And I can control the brightness on the iPad as well.

    Your daughter’s artwork is amazing! Love this post and especially those Ugg booties. Curious what size you order for Uggs? Are they true to size (I’m normally a 7) or should I go up or down a half size.
