Well, I did not intend on doing a post today about how I work out at home, but after last week’s A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF US post, I felt like I needed to do so today. I had so many people asking questions…especially about my Peloton, so here we are. I am absolutely no authority on at home workouts, but if you’re just curious about what I do when I’m not taking a class at the gym, here you go. I did a post last year on BEING ACTIVE that I still stand by as my number one way to get in my steps and stay fit that you can read HERE, plus, I also did a post on A WEEK IN MY WORKOUTS in 2016 that showed you how I workout every week HERE (just in case you want to read that too!). Today’s post is about the equipment/apps I use when I’m at home.
Come on in 🙂 .
Apparently, the Peloton started this conversation, so let’s begin there…
We have a Peloton bike that is truly amazing (but grueling work!). When we bought it, I didn’t think I would ever officially review it, so excuse me if I don’t have all the details down. It’s a stationary bike but with a large TV/computer monitor attached where you can either watch live classes from the Peloton studio in NYC or watch classes that have already been recorded. I love it for so many reasons:
1: The instructors are FUN, ENERGETIC and VERY UPBEAT! Listen, if I’m going to be starring at someone for 30 minutes while they make me work out so hard I want to puke, I want them to be entertaining, right?! These guys are so much fun!
2: You pick your classes by some of the following categories: most popular, duration, instructor, type of music, type of class, etc. This way, I can hop on and pick something really tailored to what I need that day.
3: You can save your workouts and see what your standings are in the class (compared to everyone else who has taken that class).
4: You can just take a stroll and not a class. You can pick something like “a Paris city tour” and instead of a class with instructors telling you how to ride, it’s a scenic view of Paris and you’re just strolling along.
5: You can take non-bike classes! This I love too! You can select fitness classes that do not involve your Peloton. They have classes on arms, legs, abs, stretching and more.
There is an annual fee (I think you can pay monthly too) to have your Peloton bike along with the initial cost of getting one. This fee covers the classes and such. I don’t remember how much the fee was, but it’s not outrageous (I would remember outrageous 😉 ). Here was my screen the other morning…
So, you can see how on the left, I can select live classes or on the right, I can select classes that they have on-demand. There are over 8,000 choices.
See? So, you pick your class and ride.
So, that’s my brief little Peloton review. Now, other than that…and this…
…my stairmill, I do a lot of workouts at home that do not involve machinery. My favorite thing to do is…
…go for a run or walk 🙂 .
Side note, this was me earlier this week and it wasn’t until after I looked at the picture that I realized I was really channeling white on this day. Ha! Even my polish is white.
I love to get outside and walk or run. NOTHING clears my head more than to just be outside and on the move.
I also love to use this baby…
…my body bar. Gosh, I love this thing!! I bought a 20 pound bar, but they come in all sorts of different weights. If I want to use it, I just look up a workout on Pinterest or YouTube. Just type in “body bar workout” and they’ll pop up. Easy as that.
I also love several apps for working out at home. Right now, my two faves are…
This is what the app looks like…
…it’s very similar to Peloton because you select your classes based on your criteria for the day and then you watch them in studio. I’m also obsessed with this app too…
…it’s the Bikini Body Guide app called Sweat and it’s fantastic too! Both this one and Yogaglo have subscription fees, but I think they’re worth it because the workouts are so interactive.
It has the workouts broken down into weeks and then from there, into what parts of your body you should do on what days. So many of the workouts are at home workouts with little or no equipment needed.
Speaking of equipment, other than my body bar, I have a yoga mat and then a set of 5 pound dumbbells and a set of 12 pound ones. That’s what I keep on hand and can pretty much make a workout happen using those things.
That about wraps up what I have at home. If you missed my ACTIVE post, read that one HERE. I think that one really explains more my concept on staying busy more than anything. If you want to check out my Pinterest board on all things health and fitness, see it below…
Also, if you have a Peloton, please share your thoughts in the comment section! I know I’ve missed things about it, so please chime in and further explain.
Just an FYI: I buy almost all of my workout wear from Athleta because I think it fits fantastic, washes and dries to perfection and I LOVE that they have a “workout in it and don’t like it, then return it” policy. Sometimes, you just don’t know about work out wear until you actually work out in it. My favorite Nikes for running are HERE. I love them because they’re light. Nothing is worse than running in heavy shoes. Right now, my exact shoes are 33% off. I almost always size up a half size in running shoes, but I did not need to with these.
Here’s today’s BIG QUESTION…what do you do to workout, stay active at home? Please comment and share! I would love to know!!
Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog says
I love the idea of working out at home – it’s so budget-friendly! I’m totally all for it if you can motivate yourself. 🙂 Just wish my place was large enough to actually do it, haha, can barely fit a yoga mat into my living room!

LOVE this post!! I’ve never heard of the Peloton but it seems fantastic!! I recently re-joined the YMCA and try to do a class a few times per week, but usually end up just running on the treadmill and lifting weights on my own. If I can’t make it to the gym, I always go for a walk if the weather is nice and I do short YouTube videos. My favorite is XHIT – they have really short videos for arms, abs, legs, etc. that really work!! I also will search “10 minute HIIT workouts” and do one or two of those. GREAT cardio!!
Thanks for this post!! Excited to read all the comments, too!

Your active post from last year was so inspiring! I’m going to have to go look at it again. And the Peloton looks super cool, but I think I’ll just enjoy it from a distance. 🙂 Cycling so much I feel like I’m going to vomit just sounds a little too intense for this non-athlete!
Nikki says
I meet up with a trainer and a few friends at a local park Monday – Thursday mornings…we do cardio, weights, circuit, Tabata Tuesday, whatever the trainer puts together for us using weights, medicine balls, trampolines, etc. We meet rain or shine (there’s a covered porch and a picnic area). I love the accountability and time with friends…and that it’s over by 6:45 am! If for some reason I can’t make the group session, I have a Beachbody on Demand membership that gives me access to hundreds of workouts I can do at home. I also play tennis a few times per week.
Nicole says
Love this!! Is it difficult for you to take a day off? How many days a week is your goal?
Mix and Match Mama says
My goal is 4 to 5 days a week (taking off Thursdays and Sundays), but I really try not to worry if I miss (sometimes, I miss a lot!). This is a crazy busy season in my life, so I can’t be too hard on myself.
Elspeth Mizner says
I try to hit the gym five days a week but i love to do more home workouts! These tips are great! I also try to hit 10,000 steps a day to stay active
Emily Countryman says
Beachbody on Demand every single day! Lovvvvve!
Katie Mayeaux says
I LOVE Beachbody on Demand. The 21 day fix and 21 day fix extreme workouts are my favorite. So convenient and only 30 minutes.
Stacy DeAnda says
I love this post !! I like to take a class at the gym two- three times a week ! I love the three week yoga retreat from beach body week two of that series I do on repeat!
Rachel Mason says
I love my Peleton too! Have you heard of Les Mills on demand? It is the same workouts they do at the YMCA, but you pay a small fee to do classes from home. I especially love the body pump class. You can choose to do 30 minute or 55 minute classes. I just started this and I love it!
kristen cheney says
oh i am so glad i was reading comments. i love body pump. it’s my favorite! i will need to get check out les mills on demand!
Laura says
LMOD is the BEST! For ~ $10/month you can’t beat it. I do a rotation of Pump, Combat, Attack, Sh’Bam, and CX – love them all!
Sheaffer Sims says
This is how I work out at home: I do what Heather tells me to do. And if Heather isn’t working out that day, neither am I. I have to have somebody or I’M OUT.
Joanne Golden says
Ahhh! I love you even more now that I know you are a PeloMom!! Love our bike. I didn’t think I would use it much— it’s my husband’s baby. It has transformed how we workout! I love to run, it keeps me in shape for that. He has lost a ton of weight. I have lost a little but I feel healthier. I love the supportive Pelo community as well. We have figured out that it is now costing us far less than spin classes. (And these classes are far superior to any gym classes we could take locally.)
Jennie says
I love working out at home! I live on a farm in the country so it saves me a lot of drive time. I just started getting up at 5am to workout before work and school and I love it! I love feeling accomplished all day and nothing interferes with my workout time. I walk/jog on the treadmill, do the elliptical, do a free weights total body circuit or do a YouTube video. Love Blogilates thanks to you! ❤️
Ann Sellers says
Is your workout room climate controlled? Wondering about the best place to put a Peloton. One side of our garage is a workout area but there is no AC/heat and I’m wondering how that might effect the computer part of the bike?
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s a good question! I think it would adjust fine to the heat, but I would ask.
Kristen D says
My husband and I purchased our Peloton for Christmas & I can’t say enough great things about it. Just like you said, the instructors are so motivating and fun, but the workouts are HARD. There are so many ways to be physically challenged on this bike, and even if spinning isn’t your favorite workout, if you love to feel the burn and you love great music, Peloton is for you! One more fun aspect to the bike is being able to follow friends so you can do the same ride or even do a ride together! Can you tell I love my Peloton? #kkspins2jam
Narci Dreffs says
What a great bunch of tips!! That body bar is brilliant, and that Peloton sounds so nice! I need to download that yoga app ASAP!
Shelley says
Pure Barre all the way!
Molly Cochran says
Wonderful ideas! I love your all white outfit! Where are those leggings from?
Mix and Match Mama says
Everything is from Athleta 🙂 .
Elaine says
I’m not a workout at home person. I get distracted by all the things. I have a gym membership with childcare- it’s the only way I’d use it. ? I love that it offers classes and I try to rotate between spin, yoga, body pump, and working out on my own. I’ve found lots of free instructors that share their routines on Instagram.
Stephanie Landrum says
Wow love this post! I will have to look into those apps! 2 kiddos and college work no gym time is there but love all your ideas for at home!
Tamela Lake says
Love using Beachbody on Demand! So many choices for any amount of time, fitness level, or workout type with new stuff being added all the time. I’m a full time working mom with 2 young kids, so being able to workout at home early in the morning is essential for me.
Beth Miller says
I work out at home every morning before my kids are up so it’s done for the day! I LOVE Beachbody workouts. My favorites are 21 Day Fix and PiYo. They are all around 30 minutes, and I pick what I’m in the mood for that morning. I also take my dog for long, fast walks when the weather cooperates. I’m not a gym or class person, so at-home workouts that I can do on my own time, that are also free/cheap, is best for me.
Erika Slaughter says
You’re one room of childcare away from me joining the Shull gym. Let me know what the dues will be. 😉
Suzie says
I am a mama of four littles and just quit my gym membership! I use fitness blender for some HIIT workouts and usually walk or run on the treadmill during naptime while watching a show! Love being creative in this season!
KimW says
I have never heard of a body bar – any suggestions for how many pounds to start with? I wish the stairmill weren’t so costly – it is my favorite machine at the gym but seems to be so frequently in need of repair so it is often not available.
sydnee says
Wow, it seems Peloton has a cult following…lol. I just use an elliptical at home, if anyone has any videos for that, I’d love to know!

Laura Thomas says
Love my Peloton, especially because I don’t need childcare (my boys are 6 & 9) to workout. I haven’t done a “live” class yet.
Going to order some Athleta clothes because it’s always a good motivator to have cute clothes to work out in!! ???
Jen G says
I do something called Spenga. It’s a 60 minute class that combines 20 minutes of SPin, 20 minutes of strENgth and then 20 minutes of yoGA. It’s perfect for me because I usually don’t want to spend much more than 20 minutes on any of those ? and it gives you a great mix of cardio, strength and stretching time. They just opened one in Houston – maybe McKinney will be soon!
Toni says
I have had a few injuries and want to start working out again. Really out of shape but motivated. Can anyone recommend some home workouts, apps, videos or tips for a beginner? Would love any and all suggestions!
Karla says
Hi! I too am coming off an injury and feel like I lost most of my strength & stamina. I’d recommend gethealthyu tv with Chris Freytag. She is offering a code and you can get a whole year of access to videos and more for $20! I know, it was too good to pass up. They have all sorts of workout calendars and beginner videos too, etc. I’m very pleased and this would be a great, inexpensive way to start moving again!
Rachel Owens says
Hi Toni!
I have found something I LOVE that fits all different workout levels depending on the program you choose!?

Slim in 6 by Beach Body. It has a beginner level that is not too hard, then has two other levels. My favorite part is a separate section for stretching afterward. I ordered it from Amazon.
Erin Port says
I am awful about being motivated to work out at home, I don’t know what it is. I try to go to the gym 3 times a week but with kids that doesn’t always happen. I think at the gym, I can’t think of something else and say that’s good for today but I have to finish the class! I need to be better about doing something at home on my off days! xoxo ERIN
Brooke Richardson says
I love beachbody on demand! Sometimes it’s just so much more convenient and saves time to work out at home. I’m going to be ordering a body bar today, whoop!
kim says
Random question here. Do you have a secret to keep your nail polish from chipping? Your nails always look perfect!
Mix and Match Mama says
I use OPI base layer, two coats of polish and Essie gel top coat :). I switch it about every six days.
Ashley Doroff says
Do you have a special nail dryer or anything? I must be the most impatient person ever because I can never wait until everything is dry and it ends up looking smudged. Just curious if you have a trick of the trade! Thanks, Shay!
Mix and Match Mama says
Nope. I’m sorry!
Lauren Darrell says
Sometimes if I’m in a rush I’ll put my hairdryer on the cool setting and blast my nails for a minute or so. It seems to help!
Amanda @ Cupcake N Dreams says
This post was perfect for today because on days I don’t do Orangetheory (today), I like to find a Yoga by Candace or Popsugar Fitness video on youtube. I’m also the biggest fan of the 7 min workout by the New York Times (youtube the one with music). It’s 12 or 13 exercises in 7 mins (I try to go as hard as I can) and I usually repeat it. I do that before I shower some days and feel like I got a decent workout in! I’ll do this while traveling to because it doesn’t require any weights!
Can’t wait to read the comments on this one!
xo

I love working out at home especially since my kids are so little right now. I have been doing the Bikini Body Mommy 90 day challenges off and on for several years now. I really enjoy them. I do them for free by looking them up on YouTube. You can also pay to become VIP member if you wish. She is currently doing 7.0 but you can start with any of them. They are only 20-25 minutes long which is so nice! Have a wonderful day!!!!!
Mirsa says
I love two instructors for at home yoga & Pilates! Pilates are my fave because it’s low impact but I still feel the burn! Check out TheBalanced life w/ Robin Long. Great Pilates series! For Yoga,Sarah Beth Yoga. I can choose my type of workout.
Jess says
I love Robin Long and Sarah Beth yoga too. They have tons of free videos on YouTube or you can suscribe for a monthly fee. I have been doing SaraBeths prenatal yoga for my current pregnancy and it has been awesome!
Mary Ashleigh says
I absolutely love classes from Jessica Smith on Youtube! She is encouraging and upbeat, and funny! And her French Bulldog, Peanut, joins along too! They are anywhere from 12 to 60 mins depending on how long you have to workout and she has so many different options! Another group I’ve recently gotten into on Youtube is HasFit! They have more intense workouts but they always have someone doing a less intense modified version if that suits your needs better. Happy sweating!
Becky Swenson says
I love HASfit and Jessica Smith as well! Have you tried any Bodyfit by Amy? Those are great too! A great mixture of high and low impact videos! Great for beginners all the way to advanced! Same with Team Body Project.. fun accents makes the videos more fun! 😉
Alexis deZayas says
I’ve been rollerblading lately I’m the evening and have been loving it!! It’s different and fun and I still work up a sweat!
Shannon says
Love my peloton! Having it in the house gives me no excuse to skip a workout. A great tip I learned, use pelotonguide.com to search for rides with specific themes/artists played during the class. I’m particular to the Hamilton and Broadway rides…makes the work a little more fun! Shay if you haven’t already, you must do the Greatest Showman ride, all music from the soundtrack!
Sara P says
I love FitnessBlender! Free on YouTube, no annoying background music (play your own!), no quasi-motivational talk, just great cues and solid workouts!
Courtney says
I love the Grokker app. After work I just can’t justify dropping my kids at the gym daycare, but I can do a workout at home with them or after they go to bed.
kristen cheney says
i love working out at home. i get up early before my kids and get it in before work and school. body pump is my favorite workout. i have been doing some jessica smith walking workouts as well. i also love walking/running outside. i am going to check out the body bar. we’re working on a workout room at home. the peketon is high on my husbands list. the stair mill was my favorite piece of equipment when i went to the gym. can you tell me more about your stair mill?
Maria says
I absolutely love the workouts on the Tone It Up App! 30ish minute workout sessions that you do at home and really feel the burn when you’re done! Great for a girl who’s always on the go!
Julie says
Ok, I thought you said you didn’t like the Peloton? Was that just tongue in cheek? I remember being pretty confused on the last post where you talked about it because they sound/look awesome! Any recommendations for free (or really cheap) workout apps/videos? We pay a monthly gym subscription which we love and I use a lot but on super busy days when I’m not able to get there, I’d love to have something else, but we honestly can’t afford another subscription.
Mix and Match Mama says
Hahahaha! I mean…I love that it kicks my butt, but I hate it while I’m doing it (I’m always like “I think I’m going to throw up” the whole time!).
Lis says
Hi Shay! Question for you – on a recent post you mentioned that you use crest white strips to get those pearly whites – how do you go about using them? Do you use a full box and then stop using them until you decide you need another whitening? Or do you use them like, every other day? every day? Just curious!
Mix and Match Mama says
I can never do a whole box at a time. I use one about every three days. It makes my teeth too sensitive to do it daily.
Melissa says
Thanks for the information! I especially was interested in the yoga app and have already downloaded it to check out soon.
Christina says
Love Blogilates videos on YouTube or her app!! I’m interested in BBG!! What all kinds of equipment do you need?
Elizabeth says
Love this post! Working out at home is the best when you have Little ones. I love Barre3 on demand. So many workout options and they put up a new workout every week.
Lisa says
What is your Peloton screen name? Would love to follow you!
Ruth says
Beachbody on demand is my favorite, because they have a lot of options.
Lane says
Do you have a set weekly schedule, such as yoga on Monday and a run on Tuesday? I never know how to mix things up and need someone to tell me exactly what workout to do each day. Thanks so much! This was such a helpful post! 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Kind of! I try and do yoga daily (even if it’s only 10 minutes). Some days, I’ll do 60 minutes of yoga and nothing else, but I try and get at least 30 minutes of carido in plus something else (yoga, weights).
Lane says
Thank you!!
Rachel K says
I do Revelation Wellness! If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a nonprofit that requires a monthly donation (as little as $5) and you get access to some awesome motivational workouts you can stream. They also have a podcast with things you can listen two when running/walking/biking outside. It’s like going to church while working out. I love it. 🙂
Lindyb says
I was an Orangetheory girl until I had my baby and now the classes don’t work with my schedule. I mainly use the treadmill and free weights, but I’d love a peleton! And Iive in my Athleta! Everything from street tights on the weekend to bikinis in the summer!
Chelsea says
What’s your peloton name?! I have one and would love to follow you!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Hahahaha! I’m horrible at it. I would be following YOU!
Alana says
Peloton has really been a game changer for me as far as my fitness. My husband is on the road for work 320+ days a year. I was a member of our local Y but getting there and back with my sons nap schedule was so hard( (our Y doesn’t have childcare all the time- only selective hours). So I finally bought the Peloton and I love it! I also find the workouts very challenging- even compared to a traditional spin class. I can workout during nap time or at night and the ease of it just can’t be beat at this stage in my life. Someone else just commented about Les Miles on demand which I may try because I miss Body Pump.
Sandy W says
Love my Peleton! Monthly fee is $39.
Brandi Tooker says
Yep – I am one of those Peloton obsessed people! I got it a little over a month ago and I can’t believe I waited so long. The motivation is awesome. There a lots of “tribes” of people that you can follow and see when you take a class (I am in the FitFab40’s group). I also love that you can chase yourself on the leader board. I am always so at the bottom of the board but seeing me try to improve on my own output is really cool. Anyone in the house can use the same bike so you only pay $39/mo to get all of the content. I feel like a walking sales person. I love that thing!! As a working mom I just can’t make it to the gym or a class. I feel like I am getting that experience but with major convenience.
Heather Green says
I love using Beachbody on Demand and for only $99/year, it feels like a steal! Working out at home is the best to accommodate busy, mom schedules!!! Love your blog!
Nikki says
Whenever I have to do a home workout, I do a HITT workout by Christine Salus. I absolutely love her. All her workouts are on youtube for free. She has tons of different options for different target areas, levels, and amount of time, so she definitely caters to your needs for the day.
I’m going to have to look into the peloton bike!

I recently joined a gym and I have been getting up at 5 am and working out then head straight home and get me and my kids off to school and work! I told my boyfriend “Shay would be proud of me” hahaha! He was like “huh??” LOL
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh my gosh! You’re so cute, Laci!! I am proud 😉 .
Anna S says
I love at-home-yoga too. I am looking for new formats and instructors so I am excited to try some of your suggestions. Also, I went back and read your active blog post from last year and it’s giving me spring/summer fever. I want to get back in the pool! 🙂
Amy says
I was intrigued by the Peloton system…then I Googled the cost. Ahhhh! Why is it so expensive?! Does anyone reading the comments know of other stationary bike systems that are more affordable? I’d be very interested. I’d love to find something more affordable since the other is not an option on my budget.
Susan says
Do you have a workout room at home? Where is your bike and stairmill?
Hillary says
As a mom of 2 little Little’s I haven’t been able to get to the gym but I loved the stair mill when I did go and never thought about getting one for home because they look so bulky at the gym. What model do you have and how did you go about purchasing it? We’re about to add a home gym into our basement and I’d LOVE to get you opinion on models! Thanks so much!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh goodness, I should know this, right? I’ll try and get the details for you!
Hillary Elliott says
Thanks. It’s literally my fav piece of equipment so I’d love to get the details. Although I might have to look into the peloton! I failed miserably at my first cycle class. Soo sore! But that must mean it worked right?! 🙂
Dana A says
I love to CYCLE but did not specifically want a Peloton bike. I bought the same exact bike that they used in my cycle classes at the gym and then just purchased the Peloton app for my ipad ($12.99 a month).
And it’s awesome!!! Only difference is the gears on the Peloton bike and the gears on my bike (Keiser) are numbered different but they give a cadence range and I can match that up easily with the gears I’m used to on my bike.
Loved the live rides in PyeongChang!!! So much fun!
Mix and Match Mama says
I loved those too!!!! YES!!!
Tracy says
Did you design a home gym area when you built your house? Would love to see your set up and get ideas for my own.
Sarah Fooshee says
I love our Peloton! I had no idea I could just do a stroll instead of a class! We’ve had it for a a little over a year, but I guess I am so used to just picking my class and going to it:) So glad to know!
Christy says
Random question: how much does your body bar weigh?
Mix and Match Mama says
20 pounds!
Liz says
I’ve been working out at the church gym. It’s $20 for 3 months. And has what I need. Living in the missionary house just fits us. It’s small but works for us for now so no room for extra but I am gonna try the yoga link and sweat link. Since having not really worked out because of a back injury for 3 months I am feeling a bit fluffy in places I don’t want to. 😉
DeannaB says
You should try Orangetheory. I am so much stronger since starting it. I go about twice a week, do Beach Body workouts about 1-3 times a week, do a long run on Saturdays (10+), and do a yoga class (Hard Core by Chelsea Knight) once or twice a week.
Kathleen Latham says
I just bought Beachbody on demand and I have LOVED it so far! You can access all of their workouts from any device anywhere! Love it! And it was only $100/year.

I wish. There is no place in my home to work out. I, too, love to be outside so if the weather permits, I’ll be outside. I have a gym membership and go 4-5 times a week. The accountability with instructors and friends keeps me going. Otherwise, I’d just sit on my sofa.
Kristin S says
Oh, I forgot! I do use the Yoga by Adrienne videos on YouTube. She’s a stellar instructor and not all weird. I love her practices.
Kristi says
Great post with great ideas! I love to mix it up at home. I do a little bit of everything. I do the Treadmill for intervals or hills, my road bike on my trainer, a circuit with treadmill, road bike and body weight exercises, Insanity and Insanity Asylum, weights and even just a made up cardio thing while watching a movie where I run in place, jump rope, do jumping jacks, core, etc.
One time I even jogged in my basement for 7 miles because it was -7 outside with snow and ice and I just didn’t want to get on the treadmill. When I looked at my watch I had done 7 miles!!
Hillary says
I have been curious about the Peloton so thanks for sharing more information on it. For working out at home I love using POPSUGAR Fitness YouTube videos!

I love the Peloton! If I’m not in the mood for a class, I take a scenic ride in Wyoming, Canada, you name it ;).
Melissa P. says
I’m a HUGE fan of Beachbody on Demand also. I’ve never been in better shape. Question on the Peleton – how comfortable is the seat? That’s been my issue with spin classes in the past – my butt is always so sore from the seats, lol!

Barre3 online! This week I just started the 10-day Pilates challenge by The Balanced Life. I love short, effective workouts (teacher mom with a 3 and 1 yo) that I can do at home without waking anyone up.
Marisa says
We love the motivation group fitness classes but when its nice outside we make up our own and use an app called Interval Timer. We pick 10 exercise, do them for 45 seconds, 15 second rest and repeat 3 times. It’s quick and we alternate upper, lower body and cardio moves. (Burpees, jumpsquats, plank, lunges, tricep dips, pushups, sprint, frog jumps, bicycle, Russian twist etc)

I love doing workout videos from Jillian Michaels. She kicks my butt every time! And a lot of her videos require little to no other equipment (a lot done w/your own body weight) so it’s great!

Beachbody On Demand! We invested in a bench and free weights and spend the $99/year to have access to tons of workouts. I’m doing Body Beast right now, so I workout with your brother once a week ;).

I love fitness blender when i have time and want to shake up my routine! I run/walk because i can’t consistently run the whole time 2-3 days a week and 2 days a week i do a bootcamp like routine for 30mins. i rotate workouts that i had from when i was working out w/ a personal trainer. i love that i get a full body workout and i’m not just focused on one body part. When i started using my fitbit i was obsessed w/ getting my steps and then increasing them, once i switched over to the Apple watch i made sure i was hitting my steps like i was used to but then got obsessed w/ making my move goal for the week and increasing it weekly. i noticed you commented on daily steps and i was curious is your goal more steps focused than move w/ your apple watch? Thanks, 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
I look at both, but sometimes, it’s easier to focus on steps because that seems more doable when you can’t get an actual workout in.

I LOVE both of the apps you called out. I used to use Yogaglo but now I’m totally obsessed with Sweat! I’ve been using the Sweat app for almost a year and I am the strongest I’ve ever been. I just joined a new gym so I have access to more weight machines. I can’t wait to start the new PWR program on the Sweat app. I feel the best I’ve felt since having kids. Being strong has really helped me overlook the changes in my body since having babies.

I also love Lindsey Brin Mom’s into Fitness. She is so cute and motivating and real! She even has nutrition tips and lots of videos designed specifically for after you have babies.

This may be a dumb question…but what exactly do you do with that body bar?
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s a great question! You can do all sorts of weight lifting with it. You can also work your abs too! It’s heavy (like dumbbells) but one bar instead.

Hi Shay, would you please share what kind of stairmill you have? The steps look to be nice and deep to fit your whole foot. Thanks for sharing!

Yoga 3-5 mornings a week..follow along with a program on the Living channel. Use sumbells to work out my arms, and constant walks. Love being outside on a nice day just taking in everything around me. Finish it all off with a protein shake. Feels good to take a little time to take care of myself. Puts me in a better frame of mind for my family. 🙂

Do you work out @ home before your kiddos get up? If not, when do you workout @ home and what do they do while you are exercising?
Thanks.?
Mix and Match Mama says
I do both! If I workout while they’re up that means Andrew is home, so they’re eating breakfast/playing in the house/stuff like that.

I haven’t read through all the responses but I would not say that the Peloton bike is a stationary bike, it is a spin bike that allows you to adjust your resistance. 🙂 I love my Peloton bike and agree it is a super fun and HARD workout. I still prefer being in a spin studio wiith a group of people but since we moved that wasn’t an option. I started using the Peloton app first with the spin bikes at my new gym and since I loved it so much, my hubby surprised me with a Peloton for Christmas. I work out when my kids are at school so I really wish I could blast the music a bit louder but when I tried to link/add my Bose bluetooth speaker it didn’t take it? I guess I need to google how to do that.

I LOVE to workout at home! Along with walking my dogs, I use a rebounder trampoline for cardio and I’m an avid fan of Suzanne Bowen Fitness streaming. It’s sort of a fusion between barre, pilates, interval cardio… It’s such a great mix of workouts! There is a monthly streaming fee but compared to others out there it is very reasonable. Anything that means I don’t have to leave my house to exercise is so worth it for me!

I think I need a pair of Go Walks. Are yours mesh or more of the fabric option?
Thanks….❤️ Your blog so much!
Mix and Match Mama says
Well, thank you, Lisa!! I would say mine are a combination of mesh and fabric. There is mesh over the top part of my foot but the rest is fabric.

I love this post. In addition to some of the apps you mentioned, I love fitness blender.com. I think? it’s a married couple, but they are so cute and very low key. That does not mean the workouts are easy though-they are hard! You can select from many choices, and there are even more options if you pay a bit. There’s also a ton for free. I notice real changes when I do this regularly.

I love all your workout equipment! I actually did BBG for over a year and it really snaps you into shape! For the past few years I’ve stuck to Tone It Up. They have their website toneitup.com and their app. They are fantastic workouts at home. Their nutrition plan is pretty amazing too! The main thing is to just fit being active in! You go girl!!

I do love me some home workout awesomeness! Diets? No. Workout. Mhm.

Hi! Can you share more about your running routine? What time of day do you run? Do you take the kids with you? Any good recommendations for running programs for someone who wants to get started with running? Thanks Shay!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I only workout in the morning (I just cannot get motivated to do it any other time of day), and no, I go by myself. I used to push babies in the jogging stroller, but they’re too heavy now 😉 .

Love this post! I used to be obsessed with The Firm program back in the day. Before that it was Jane Fonda’s step aerobics. Now I found a number of Firm videos on the Gaia app which I love. You pay a monthly subscription around ten dollars and then you have access to so many videos including lots of yoga videos. I love having it anywhere I go even traveling. You can just pick what you need for the day and they have all different lengths and intensities. But in all seriousness if there was an updated Jane Fonda step aerobics video out there I would do it!

We are going to Israel for a few weeks in March and I was interested in the Go Walk Skechers you rave about :-). I tried a pair on today . . and it seems like they ran a half size to big. I’m normally a 9 but went down to an 8 1/2. Did they run TTS for you? Also, do you wear no show socks or wear them sockless? One last thing . . .where did you purchase yours?
Mix and Match Mama says
I wear an 8 and that’s the size my Go Walks are too. You will love them in Israel!! I wear them without socks and bought them off of Zappos 🙂 .

I love my monthly membership to Robin Long’s Pilates program The Balanced Life!

Where did you get your body bar? I want one so bad!
Mix and Match Mama says
I ordered it from Dicks Sporting Goods when they were having free shipping (so they shipped my 20 pound bar for nothing!).

I’m a runner, but at least 3x/week choose a fitnessblender cardio workout on youtube. I didn’t read through all of the comments above, but if someone hasn’t already mentioned fitnessblender… check it out on youtube. They are free workouts and there are so many different types with varying times (ex. 40 minute cardio, 10 minute abs, etc.). They aren’t ones you can try to get through without breaking a sweat either! 🙂

HI Shay,
I love all your posts!
I have a question about the Sweat app. Are the Sweat workouts all high impact? Do they have low impact options?
Mix and Match Mama says
You can modify!! Just user less weight or less reps.

Another great workout app is Apptiv. There’s a yearly cost but sometimes you can get a coupon code for a discount. I would ask about that before signing up. It’s all audio based classes so you don’t have to look at the screen but rather just pop in your headphones and you have a trainer coaching you through the workout with an already made playlist. I love it and it’s made working out at home so much more fun. They have workouts for outdoor running, treadmill, rowing, cycling, strength, yoga, meditation, elliptical, stairclimber, stretching, plus all of the training programs for 5k, 10k, half and full marathons. They even have a program for busy moms with quick workouts that you can squeeze in quickly. Love it!

I love all these digital options. I have been a Beachbody fan, but the DVD is not that convenient. I’d love to access it on demand. The Sweat app sounds great and I love the Beachbody On Demand idea too! And I just pinned tons of things from your Fitness board! Thanks!!

We’re thinking of getting a Peloton and I’ve seen so many great reviews! Quick question, do you know if multiple people in the household can have a screen name and ride for the same $39 monthly fee?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes!!
