It’s life lately!
Okay, anyone else feeling a little frazzled right now?!
Me oh my oh!
I am so excited about the end of school…but gee whiz, things get CRAZY! I feel like the kiddos all have a ton of events this time of year (kinder round up, Mother’s Day breakfasts, Field Day, splash day, end of the year parties, teacher appreciation week, recital costume week, volleyball end of season party, and on and on and on!). All super fun stuff…it’s just all happening in one month (and then some!). I’m not complaining, just confessing that at this very moment, I’m in my gym clothes, very dirty (because who has time to shower?!) wondering how on earth I’m going to get all my stuff done today. Anyone else? Sometimes, it’s just good to know that there are other dirty moms out there hustling to get their stuff done too 🙂 .
So, before I dash off to you know…do stuff…here’s a little look at life lately. Spoiler alert: loads of outside stuff!
We were in the eye doctor waiting room when Ashby found this very old magazine and told me that guy looked like Uncle Seanie. Hahahahahaha! #becauseitis
A girl and her dog.
Friends, best thing we ever did was get two dogs. Frenchie has brought out this new life in Poppy (our older dog!). It has been so much more fun than I ever imagined!
My loves. We were outside about to grill dinner. I couldn’t love these people more. And side note, Poppy was too busy walking around the pool to take a family pic.
We were making a pie together. In our pjs.
This is our Ashby. So full of spunk!!!
We are enjoying our Saturdays this May! In between volleyball and baseball, we’ve been in the pool!
These two love their bubble baths!
Monday evening view.
I was sitting outside with the dogs the other morning and we tried to take a selfie. They just wanted to kiss me instead.
On Tuesday night, we had kindergarten roundup. I mean…when did she get this big?????
Ashby and Bowen were so excited to go to “the big kids” school and totally fit right on in 🙂 .
I cannot believe this girl is about to be in kindergarten.
That’s life lately. xo

The pool that you show must be really close by. So lucky to have such a nice one so close that you can go to so easily!
Melissa says
She has a pool at home…
Dani says
It’s their own pool–in their backyard. So pretty, isn’t it?
Samantha says
that’s her backyard! ?

The end of the year is always so crazy but so much fun!! Good Lucia Ish these last few weeks!

Ashby has grown so tall and looks ready for kindergarten! How many more surgeries will she need to have, is there an end point in sight? My heart breaks just thinking about anyone saying anything ugly to her. Children can be so cruel to other children, so can adults for that matter. You have a beautiful, beautiful family, enjoy all the full and crazy days, they fly by in such a flash!
Mix and Match Mama says
Unfortunately, there is no end in sight. There might be a stopping point (so that her veins can recover from the trauma), but not really an actual end (at this point). Thank you for your prayers and love. xo
Mother Henn says
Oh, wow….I imagine that’s a hard thing to grasp when it comes to your child. You all have continued prayers from our hearts too.
Ksenija Zver says
Such brave girl who is loved by so many people.

On the search for a new bathrobe – where did you find your cute and cozy one??

It’s barefoot dreams!!

Hi Shay! I have on my menu for the week to make “Shredded Chicken over mashed veggies” but I can’t find it on your site again… eek! I’m sure it’s super easy because we have loved your recipes!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh gosh…I’m trying to think??? Email me! Let’s figure it out together!

I can totally relate to the no shower comment and I don’t even have kids! lol. May is such a busy month for my family too but it’s also my favorite month so I’m trying to soak it all in before it’s over. So many weddings, birthdays, Mother’s Day, graduation parties..etc.
Sandra says
That last picture is a framer! So precious….
Rachel says
Love these pictures of your sweet Ashby 🙂 Yes! May is crazy for us! One in baseball, two are playing softball, end of the year award ceremonies & banquets and remembering all. the. stuff. (green shirt on friday, red shirt on monday, water bottle, etc.) Bring on summer!
Chasity says
This is our first year with recital, end of school year activities, etc and it’s been craaazzzyy! I’m so not used to this yet, but it’s been fun so far!!
Alexandra C says
Hi Shay! I saw your post on Insta the other day about the girls asking about Ashby’s arm and I don’t want to be crossing a line so feel free not to clear this comment, but what specific prayers does she need? Pain? Procedures to be less frequent? Her spirit? The battle your girl is fighting just breaks my heart.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well, thank you so much!! Specific things we are praying about are: that she can be in as little pain as possible, wisdom for her doctors as they make decisions moving forward, her spirit and mental strength (this is getting harder!), and advances in technology/medicine. Thank you so much, Alexandra.
Liz THORSON says
Shay, your reply to Alexandra C., just breaks my mama heart for you , Ashby and your family. As mamas, we just want to take away our childrens’ struggles of any kind–physical, emotional, mental or psychological. We want them to be happy, accepted, loved, successful and fulfilled, everyday of their lives. I am so happy Ashby is you and Andrew’s daughter. I know you two will forever be seeking the best care and treatment for her. She is so precious to all of us who have come to love her through your blog. I adore Kensington, Smith and Madeley, too, but Ashby holds a special place of her own in my heart.❤️
Alexandra C says
Absolutely. Will add her to my daily journaling.
Sara says
Our private school gets out for the summer TODAY!!!! Whoop!!!!! Which means we have lots of downtime in May while our public school friends are still in school, but we make our bucket list for May and try to go to lots of places that are open yet won’t be as crowded as they will be in June-August.
And! Post suggestion – bathing suits for our kiddos! I have trouble finding suits for my 10 and 8 year old that are modest but allow for easy bathroom access, if you know what I mean =) Affordable but don’t wear out by the second month of summer. What are your kid summer swim suit tips?
Lynn Winter says
Summer in Texas is wonderful, right? I know I will die when mine goes to kindergarten, but she looks so excited.
Melanie says
I want to thank you for doing the #photoadayinmay2018 on Instagram. My daughter and I have both been doing it and it’s been fun. Sometimes, we even ask each other about a picture before we post it, LOL. It’s not a big deal, but, hey….we are women! Anyway, it’s been a fun mother/daughter activity.
Mix and Match Mama says
I love this, Melanie!! That is too fun!
heather says

I’m sure all moms everywhere snickered at the “dirty moms out there hustling to get their stuff done too” comment, I know I did! We are running on 3 day dirty hair, scuffed up nail polish, and caffeine!
Mix and Match Mama says
All the caffeine!
Ella says
Ashby and Bowen going to kindergarten is just the cutest thing. She looks so excited.
Your pool looks amazing along with the Texas sunshine!
Darcy says
So fun! And your first picture/comment cracked me up! It’s like when you realize your teachers don’t live at school…..and when you realize your Uncle is a little famous. 😉

The countdown is on! My baby boy is graduating high school in a short 15 days. I cry on a regular basis these days and expect to be a basket case by the time graduation arrives. I swear I didn’t blink. Our babies grow up entirely too fast!!

Amen and I don’t have little ones. But if you could convince my 19 yr old to get off his bootie and get his license that would be great (who has to convince a teenager!!?? Thankfully Grace is taking hers next week. Whew…
Anywho….glad y’all are having so much fun outside. Good luck with all the activities!!
Angela Ellingson says
I’m totally right there with you!! Can hardly keep up!

I absolutely love reading your Life Lately posts! Ashby is growing up so beautifully. Random question but wanted to ask which flea control you use for your dogs since they are outside often. You always share beauty and fashion finds so was also curious which pet products you prefer on your fur babies! Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
That falls under “Andrew”…kid medicine, would be a Shay question, flea and tick medicine, is an Andrew question. I know he gives them some sort of monthly heart-worm pill that also prevents fleas and ticks plus, we have our yard sprayed as well.
Erin Port says
Nothing better than spending time by the pool as a family! My parents have that duck floaty and we all took turns, it was a hit! xoxo ERIN
Ashley says
Hi Shay! I’m a reader from AZ! So I’m wondering why Smith is throwing up a pitchfork (the hand signal for Arizona State University) in your outdoor family selfie?!
Mix and Match Mama says
I think he’s just being a crazy 8 year old. Hahahaha!
suzy says
I love the family picture on the porch….look at yours and smith’s eyes…..then look at Kensington and Andrew’s eyes. So adorable! Ashby looks precious sitting at her kindergarten desk….so big and beautiful!! Thanks for sharing!

I always love reading your posts. Have you done a post on where you buy you bathing suits? If not I would love some suggestions. 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Almost all of them (seriously, like 99%) come from Athleta!
Bridget says
Yes…end of year is always crazy… our school year in Australia finishes in December. Last year it was December 22nd… Xmas shopping/kids events/ extreme heat….takes it to a whole new crazy level!!
JJ Cush says
What a cute pool floatie! We just moved to a new house with a pool and I have no idea how to store pool toys. What do you do with them? Am I supposed to dry them before I put them away? Help!
Mix and Match Mama says
We just leave them in our pool all the time. At the end of the summer, when we put them away, we just deflate them and they fold right up.
Grace says
Hi Shay! When you got each of your dogs, did you purposely choose girls vs. boy dogs? Did your breeder steer you that way or was it a family choice? Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Growing up, both mine and Andrew’s parents always had girl dogs…so, we’ve kept the tradition alive in our family too.
Kelli Crough says
Hi Shay-I live in Cali and would love the name of the dog breeder you got Frenchie from. And enjoy every second with your kiddos, even the end of school crazy ones because you blink and they’re 18, said the mom of six whose youngest is now 21.
Mix and Match Mama says
My Snowy River Coton!! They’re the sweetest!!!
Jess Murphy says
We have all the end of the year things… and we leave in 3 weeks to bring home #4 from China!!!!!!!! It’s a crazy crazy time!!! Love your family!!
Mix and Match Mama says
No way?! That’s amazing!!!!!!!! Please send me a pic when you’re home!!
Nikki says
Beautiful pictures! Speaking of dogs, your mention of a Coton puppy (around the time you got Frenchie) and how sweet they are inspired us to get one for us. 🙂 🙂 I was not aware of this breed and the links that you provided help me find an ethical breeder in our area. Our “Jimbo” has been a pure delight in our house and has brought so much joy in to our lives. Thank you so much!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Ahhhhhh! This makes me so happy, Nikki!!
Kelly says
I always enjoy your life lately posts and this one is no exception. That last picture of Ashby is just beautiful!!
