Tuesday Talk: Supporting other Women!

It’s TUESDAY TALK!

Once a month, I link up with Ashley and Erika (who host this fun little blog link up), and you blog about anything and everything.

In January, I blogged about HOW I’M USING ESSENTIAL OILS NOW
In February
I decided to blog about…THE FAMILY VALENTINE’S DANCE

And today, I would like to encourage all of YOU busy ladies out there that hustle to make YOUR BUSINESS successful to comment and share.  I did this a few years ago, and it’s always stuck out as one of my favorite posts.  I know how hard it is to work at your gig (whether it be your main job, your side job, your hobby that one day you’ll hopefully turn into a job or whatever), and I love supporting other women who are doing it.  As a self-employed, have my own business, hustle every day kind of lady, it always encourages and motivates me to see other women doing it too.  For example, my sweet friend Karla

…she’s been one of my besties for the last 13 years.  Well…when we were in NYC together this fall (as pictured in our pajamas!), we were roomies and the first night I walked into the bathroom, I was like HOLY COW, MARY KAY!  I have never seen so many Mary Kay products in one place in my life.  Alllll of the skincare, beauty stuff and makeup was neatly organized on the bathroom counter.  I immediately walked right back out and was like, “KARLA, YOU NEED TO SELL THIS!”.  Clearly, she was a devout Mary Kay user, but she was all “ahhh, I’ve been told that, but I don’t think so…”.

Karla is a high school teacher and honestly, I really didn’t think she thought she could handle anything more than that, but friends, last month, she actually started working with Mary Kay and I’ve never seen her HAPPIER!  She’s working SO HARD, but I can see an actual change in her.  She’s motivated, energized, upbeat and crushing it.  AND I KNOW SO MANY OF YOU ARE TOO!!  So, today, in the comment section, please tell us all what you’re doing and put in your link.  If several of you are doing the same thing, maybe you can network together and encourage one another?  Maybe the rest of us can scroll through and find a new Etsy shop, a new product to love, a new lady to support?  Sound like fun?  I think so 🙂 .

In the meantime, you need to check out the goodies I bought from Karla!  These are some of my faves…

Okay, I bought both of these masks (you know what a mask junkie I am!).  The charcoal one really sucks all the ick out of my skin and it feels all tingly and refreshed when I wipe it off.  I’ve been using the Timewise mask as a night mask.  It’s clear (so no one can see it), and I just apply a layer to my skin right before bed and then wake up with extra moisture and hydration.

Okay!  These little Vitamin C Squares are my FAVORITE!  I am going to post a little Insta Story today and explain them better, but I am in love! You dissolve a square with your favorite serum and then apply it to your face.  I really noticed a remarkable difference the next day.

Two pretty lip colors? Yes, please!  I bought Always Apricot and Love Me Pink.

I asked Karla over the weekend if I could share her link today and she said that not only could I, but that she would offer free shipping on all US orders over $75.  Woohoo!  You can support Karla and shop her Mary Kay page HERE.

Now, if you are building a business, want to share your passion and want to support other mamas, comment! I would love to look through these later today and find other ladies I can support!! xo

I sort of did the same thing with LipSense/SeneGence in July of 2016! I fell head over heels for the lip color then dabbled in thier eyeshadows…..almost three years later I have a little side biz alongside mommying, teaching 4th grade and regular life stuff. I love sharing the products and the long-lasting, anti-aging factor in most of the makeup and skincare is just icing on the cake!

Hi Shay! Are you still using your oils as much? If so, what are some of your favorite diffuser blends or new oils you’ve ordered? Also, why did you feel teaching was all Karla could handle? Maybe I just read that wrong, but my feelings were kind of hurt for her after that sentence.

      • Keesha March 19, 2019 at 10:05 am

Shay didn’t say she thought Karla couldn’t handle it, she said she thought Karla thought she couldn’t handle it. 😊

        • Mix and Match Mama March 19, 2019 at 10:42 am

Yes, that’s exactly what I thought. Karla can freaking conquer the world!!

      • Sarah March 19, 2019 at 4:08 pm

I agree – that comment about Karla was pretty condescending, especially for someone referring to one of her “best friends.”

        • Mix and Match Mama March 20, 2019 at 5:15 am

Because you didn’t read it correctly, Sarah.

          • Elizabeth Valdez March 20, 2019 at 9:24 am

Your response made me LOL. Yeah, SARAH. Geez, some people need to get a life.

        • Sarah March 20, 2019 at 11:11 am

Agree—I read it the same way.

        • Sarah March 20, 2019 at 1:42 pm

Sorry Sarah, my comment posted to the wrong spot. I totally agree with you. I read the comment just as you did. Surprising way to write about a friend.

          • Mix and Match Mama March 20, 2019 at 2:47 pm

Just go back and read it…I didn’t write it that way at all. Go read it again, please!

          • Brady March 21, 2019 at 10:54 am

She didn’t say that SHE (shay) thought Karla couldn’t handle it. She said she thought KARLA thought KARLA couldn’t handle it. Reread things before you get all bent out of shape.

Love women helping women!!! I am a reading specialist (working mainly with dyslexic students) in a tiny school district in west Texas by day – and on the side I sell Juice Plus. Juice Plus is a way to bridge the gap between what you eat and what you should eat everyday. This has been a huge game changer for my family – it has boosted our immune systems, improved our skin and hair, and eases my mom guilt on days that my picky eaters don’t eat the best. I love to share about these amazing products. For more information check out my website http://LauraDieringer.juiceplus.com

  • Sara Grayson March 19, 2019 at 5:38 am

Hi Shay! We have emailed a tiny bit in the past (I shared a nail polish about 3 years ago, haha)…I am a mama of 3 and a Boston-based family/newborn/maternity photographer. I love capturing natural, organic emotion…the joy and laughter and the tears, too. Having gone through medical trauma with my first child, my heart feels full when I am able to give images to another mama (and/or Daddy!) walking through a difficult season. Every mama deserves to see the beauty in her life. I would love to offer one of your Boston-based mama readers a complimentary session (digital image files included). I am also open to traveling beyond Boston for sessions. I can be found online or on Instagram: @Sara_grayson_photography . Thank you, Shay!

I am a 3rd Grade teacher in the DFW metroplex but started selling my teaching resources on Teachers Pay Teachers in 2016. It’s been a slow process or figuring out how everything works but last year I made over $1,000.00 and I was stoked! Not NEAR enough to cover my full time job but just enough to help us on vacations and things like that!

I also just recently started a Teaching Blog where I have put posts on anything from my Top 10 Read Alouds to How to Have a Clean Classroom! It’s been so fun!

    And writing my blog http://www.fromheretozehr.blogspot.com

    • Sarah March 20, 2019 at 3:27 pm

Shay, I did it read it again. I read it a few times. You wrote that you didn’t think that she thought she could handle it. You’re stating your thoughts about what she felt capable of doing. Karla didn’t say that she felt that way, you did. Also, I’m a little surprised on a post about building up other women you seem ok with someone commenting that another woman should “get a life”. Doesn’t seem in line with the idea of supporting other women.

      • Mix and Match Mama March 21, 2019 at 5:11 am

Sigh. No, I didn’t ask Karla for a direct quote for this post, but she was telling all of us (her friends) that her plate was too full with teaching English and raising two boys and that there was no way possible for her to add one more thing to her plate…and yet she did, and she’s THRIVING. There you go. That’s what I said, that’s how she felt. I clearly would not think that/put her down in a post.

  • Sarah P Wall March 19, 2019 at 5:44 am

I also just started teaching with VIPKID! This job is so much fun and perfect for stay-at-home moms or anyone wanting a little extra cash! VIPKID allows you to teach basic English to Chinese students, and you get to work right from your home computer (in your PJs, if you want!). It is a lot of fun and super-simple…the Chinese students sign up for a class, VIPKID sends you the interactive power-point slides to teach, and you can make up to $22/hr! It is great! They do require that you have a 4 year college degree in any field and a little teaching experience (like teaching Sunday School, helping with kids camp, etc). I would love for you to use my referral link if you want more info: https://t.vipkid.com.cn/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=9aeb895fbb2ba1dc618af1a64652dcda&refereeId=29006198 or enter SARAH1372 at http://www.vipkid.com

I am a PreK-2 grade librarian and just started working with VIPKID a few months ago. I love the extra money I make by just working a couple of hours before school in my pj’s! It is such easy money. You do need to have a 4 year degree and some experience working with children. You do not need a 4 year degree in education. I love the kiddos I work with and the paycheck I get. I would love to help you join this team too. https://t.vipkid.com.cn/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=cf3a0e868d99ec7652dee475fad1b0f2&refereeId=4274520 This is the link for my referral code. 👊🏼 Cheering all you ladies on!! 👏🏼👏🏼

I do Juice Plus, which is a simple way to add a variety and quantity of 20-30 fruits, veggies + berries (antioxidants) to your daily diet via capsules or gummies – they are vine-ripened, picked at the height of their nutrition, dehydrated and encapsulated. Juicing minus the mess and cost! 😜 Every batch is 3rd party tested to ensure free of pesticides, herbicides, etc… (USDA organic produce only goes through this testing at certification, not every harvest), highly researched and published medical studies at over 35 prestigious institutions around the world (like Vanderbilt, MD Anderson…) showing the many health benefits of getting a diet full of the 9+ recommended daily servings of fruits and veggies by the FDA – immune support, heart health, anti-inflammation, etc…

Juice Plus also has a high-quality plant-based protein powder and a full-spectrum plant-based omega blend (mercury-free + no fish burps!).

Also(!), kids aged 4-18 or a full time college student are eligible to get theirs FREE for 4 years with an adult (parent, grandparent, etc) who takes it. One child per adult.

  • Maria Novajosky March 19, 2019 at 7:24 am

This is wonderful! Women celebrating the achievements of women! I will enjoy going through the comments. As for me, I recently published a book (available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble) …

Taking excerpts from letters that go back over fifty years, “An Ocean, an Airplane, and Two Countries Full of Kisses” (by Maria Novajosky) is an introspective journey on how one woman learned to celebrate her Italian heritage while living and raising a family in the Deep South. With honesty and humor, and fortified with memories of her Italian Nonna (grandmother) and the letters she wrote through the years, the author shares how the hyphen between the words Italian and American became a bridge between espresso and Thanksgiving pumpkin pie, red wine and pit barbecue, the Amalfi Coast and Hilton Head Island, and la dolce vita and life in Georgia. And along the way she discovers how everything somehow always circles back to Nonna.

Hi Shay! I started my business with Color Street almost a year ago and it’s been an amazing experience so far! I love being able to meet other wonderful women and being able to build or strengthen our relationship as I have some fun girl time with them while doing nails. 🙂 Color Street nail strips are 100% nail polish strips that peel off a backing and stick to your nails. My favorite part about it is that there is no dry time! The worst is when you wait forever for nails to dry and you wake up with sheet marks! You can have a beautiful salon-quality manicure that lasts up to 2 weeks! Thanks for letting us all share the love and support each other! My website is: http://www.cutetipswithcami.com

Thanks so much for the opportunity to share with others and to help other women. What a great idea! I am a stylist for Color Street. We are a new company and I am head over heels for these 100% nail polish strips that go on 95% dry. I used to spend time each week at a nail salon, but as a working mom it was getting harder and harder to find the time. Now I can do my mani at home in about 20 min and my nails look great all the time. I’d love to share a sample if anyone is interested. I love reading about all these businesses that other strong women are building!!!
I joined color street right after I tried it and realized how easy it was to apply and that it worked.
I immediately fell in love! I have longer, stronger nails with no chips, smudges, or dry time. My favorite thing about this dry nail polish is that I am able to stop mid-manicure to meet the needs of my kids (like check school work, we homeschool) and then pick back up and finish my beautiful manicure! It is pretty incredible! The short and sweet story is Color Street specializes in 100% real nail polish strips you apply with no tools, no heat, remove with regular nail polish remover, and will last up to 2 weeks! No dry time. No smudging. (Just wait 30 minutes before applying lotion or getting your hands wet to allow the polish to fully harden, but no need to wait to pick up the baby or fold the laundry!)

Shay! Your blog is so uplifting. I have always had an itch to travel but after reading your blog it makes me want to even more. I always tel my husband “Look Shay does it with 4 kids, we can too.” So thank you for encouragement. We never got to growing up so I like to make it a point for my kids as they are growing up. Anyway, I am a travel agent who specializes is Disney vacations. We got a few times a year and everyone always told me to start selling them so I began it a couple of years ago. Just a side gig but I am enjoying it greatly. I’m also working hard on trying to figure out how to start a blog about having four kids under the age of four and as they grow, etc as well as reviewing different items that help make our life easier. Everyone says I need to, just trying to figure all this stuff out. Props to you, as it’s so very overwhelming. Thanks for always encouraging us fellow moms! It means a lot!

What a thoughtful idea for a blog post! I love reading about everyone’s passions and side hustles!

I started a blog in 2013 when I was teaching special education as a place to share classroom ideas, teacher outfits, DIY projects, and life events. Now that I’m a work-from-home mom to a 16 month old boy, my blog has transformed into a place where I encourage living with less and share things that have worked for me in simplifying life, particularly motherhood. I also post book reviews each month (which is partially inspired by the fact that I love reading yours, Shay!) I don’t make any money off the blog, it’s just a hobby of mine and anyone who is interested can check it out at simplifythechaos.com. 🙂

Last year I started an online retailer called AlpineCurves.com. We are an online store focusing on outerwear, active wear, and hunting wear for plus size woman. I myself am a plus size woman and an avid skier; I became very frustrated trying to find clothing that would not only be technical but fashionable for hitting the slopes. It has become my passion to bring quality brands to our customers so they can participate in any activity they want to without worrying if something will fit or if they will look nice in it. Thank you for letting me share my business and passion with you and your readers 🙂

About 18 years ago I used to use a MK product on my lips and I was in LOVE. My lips get super red and bright the minute anything touches them and they had this product that kind of tamed them. I wasn’t able to find it after that one time and I have looked everywhere. I even went to Sephora and described it and the best they could do was recommend using an eyelid primer on my lips. I tried and that’s what I do now but I would give anything to find that product again. I wish I could remember the name!

I don’t own a business, but I work in sales for PepsiCo. I call on large format accounts and big box stores (Wal-Mart, Target, etc). I also have a background in brick and mortar store expansion with H&M, the Swedish clothing brand.

You can’t support me directly, but you can eat SmartFood popcorn and drink PureLeaf tea to support my company! 🙂
Happy to provide guidance for anyone looking for sales/expansion support.

Happy to see so many self-made women setting examples for our children! It’s inspiring! I have had my own business for 22 years now. I work from my home office and work MY hours. Some weeks it’s seriously crazy and frustrating, other weeks it’s dead. That’s just the way it is. I have a weird profession. I design millwork and casework for small manufacturers and general contractors. I mostly design for hotels (reception desks, buffets, etc.), hospitals (nurse stations, waiting areas, etc.) and restaurants (buffets, booths, bars/back bars, etc.), but also design specialty items for residential. Told you it’s weird. 😉

Hey! I’m Jessie, and am 28 years old living in NYC with my husband. A year an a half ago, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. We were both actors, and because of his treatment and health were unable to take jobs. I decided to design a health planner for he and I to use to stay on top of appointments and medications. A few months later, I realized it could be helpful for a larger group if people, and decided to self publish it! Now my planner isn’t being used by 1000’s of fighter’s across the country, and my small business has grown to include all sorts of support and awareness products like get well cards, clothing, and water bottles. I never expected to be running my own small business, but it helped support us while my husband heals, and I am so grateful for it. Better and Company (my company) honestly helped me stay afloat during the past year as well, allowing me to feel like I had a purpose and was helping people. You can see all I’ve been up to, and read about us here: http://www.betterandcompany.com

Thank you, Shay, this is amazing! As the oldest of four girls, with two internationally adopted sisters, who all mean the world to me, I LOVE following your sweet family.

I started my own side Disney World business called “WDW Park Planners.” My goal is to help families get the most out of their Disney experience! While I’m not a travel agent like Shay (who plans uh-mazing vacations!), once your trip to Disney World is booked, I take it from there!!

Disney World requires a ton of advance planning and work, so I do all of the dining reservations, Fast Pass+ selections, and then create a customized day-by-day itinerary for your family! I can help Make Every Minute Magical so you don’t waste your days in the parks waiting in lines 🙂

As a self-employed woman, I really appreciate your focus on empowerment in this post. Just a reminder to us all…don’t forget that supporting small businesses that are local to you is also very important. Maybe buy your books at a local store instead of Amazon, buy your veggies at the farmer’s market instead of Walmart, support local clothing and jewelry boutiques, etc. It feels so good to patronize my local coffee shop and independent bookstore and know that I’m keeping money in my own community and helping local business owners. I love seeing everyone’s comments!

I am primarily a sahm but missed my teaching job and wanted to find an opportunity to continue teaching with a schedule that worked for my family (while avoiding daycare costs). I had a friend suggest VIPKID and I’ve been teaching English online with them for almost 2 years. It has been such a blessing for my family both financially and providing me with a creative outlet that I craved. Anyone who has a bachelor’s degree (in any field) and 1 year experience working with kids can apply! We teach one-on-one classes with students in China and it is a blast! The kids are so fun, respectful, and excited to learn! Plus, VIPKID provides all of the lessons for you. I have a referral link if anyone is interested in checking it out: https://t.vipkid.com.cn/mkt/landing/personal?referralToken=5c46c55a8cbea914f45cfe39b998a000&refereeId=2031507
I also started a YouTube channel to share about my VIPKID journey (and some other mom-related stuff): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLkUYkiK54lQLrs2wTagUlg?view_as=subscriber

Hi! I have a small business of curating and shipping activity boxes for young children – ages 3-8. The boxes are designed to promote connections between children and adults, and are themed. Everything you need to complete the activities are included in the boxes, even a box and journaling cards for kids and adults. I believe that kids learn best through play and hands-on activities and that every child deserves an adult who they feel connected to. Hope you’ll check out my website.

As a mom and wife, I made it my mission to find truly clean, natural supplements to better my life for me and my family. I found that in ARIIX… and I LOVE women supporting women. I am 44 and a 2x – stage 4 – cancer survivor. After my last re-occurrence, my only hope for any kind of remission/curative measure was a Stem Cell Transplant. I received my transplant on 12/27/2016. I’ve been thru hell and back! I am 1.5 years post transplant…and feeling amazing. ARIIX has an amazing umbrella of products including supplements, energy, and beauty products. Products many of us are already taking/using!!! But, here’s the kicker, they’re clean….truly clean. I have my life back and I am unwaveringly thankful for every.single.day. Cancer can leave you feeling out of control, but what I can control is what I put into my mouth and body to fight the horrible disease. Supplements are everywhere, it can difficult to know what is best. It doesn’t have to be ‘all or none’…one tiny change is the best way to start! For me, it’s not about making money…it’s about sharing products that can be life-changing. Interested? Want a sample? Please reach out…. https://www.facebook.com/sara.pruehsdubinsky

Hey!! I’m a nurse practitioner but have recently started selling Color Street nail polish strips because I fell in LOVE with them. Working as a nurse and being a busy mom to 2 girls I never had time/money to get to the salon! Color Street are 100% nail polish strips that last up to 2 weeks (4-6 weeks on your toes)! They are fabulous and I fell in love the first time I tried them!! My girls (ages 7 &9) love them too!!

  • Maryglenn Blanks March 19, 2019 at 10:13 pm

I’m a mother of two (3rd due next week!) and work a full-time job. About 6 months ago, I opened an online women’s apparel boutique as a side hustle: Good Poppy Boutique. http://www.goodpoppy.com

Everything is always under $100! I think many moms feel guilty spending money on themselves or their clothes so I wanted to make fashion affordable and accessible to everyone!

I think a Devine moment happened for me to see this post today. It’s been a struggle bus these last couple weeks and just in the past two days I have worked 27 hours!! I work as a Store Manager for a large Fortune 500 company and run a 2.5 million dollar store/business. Talk about stress and responsibility! I have a side hustle that I can’t even begin to think about when I’m working 50-60 hour weeks at my day job. Most days my job isn’t that bad but having to manage the business side and manage 10 other employees and all the drama that comes with working with adults who act more like children, it just takes the steam out of you so when you get home that it’s hard to find motivation to do that side hustle. High five to all you ladies out there hustling and working hard!! WE CAN DO THIS!!

  • Erin Zurek March 20, 2019 at 6:51 am

This is such a lovely idea and I love your blog! I work for a haircare company and have for over a year! My hair doesn’t air dry into a poof ball anymore, has natural shine, I don’t have to wash it everyday anymore 😱😆, and it helped re-grow my hair line. BONUS- it is naturally and botanically based! No sulfates, parabens, none of the yucky stuff. But it works AND smells amazing! I’d be more than happy to have you try out an entire system that is specific to your hair!! I have a group on Facebook-
https://m.facebook.com/groups/125829818125267?ref=share Or I am also on Instagram- @erinzurek
I used to teach high school math for 9 years, have a 2 and 3 year old with one on the way and my husband works crazy hours as a firefighter/paramedic! I never thought life would lead me to sharing haircare products, but sometimes you just need to go where it takes you and it has been a blessing for a family.

Awesome idea, Shay, thank you. My mom and I have had fun writing locally popular children’s books. Tugger the Pretzel Pup is our first book, and the second is called Tugger & Mini-Mew. Both are written in rhyme so they are great for little ones, each have a moral/lesson at the end of the story (one about picky eating and the other about friendship), and both are available on Amazon. I always enjoy hearing that one of my books is a three to six year old’s favorite story.
