A little life lately for your Wednesday.
This week has been pretty wonky.
We have two doctors appointments in Dallas this week which pretty much dominate two entire days…and so, when you add that on top of all the other “end of year” stuff, I’m a little “agh!” over here. Ha! Anyone else? Also, question…you guys know that I have a desktop PC, but then I also have a Macbook. I pretty much adore my Mac and would use it 24/7 except I don’t know a great way to store pictures. I have all of my pictures dating back like 13 years on my PC all neatly organized and easy to find. Any ideas Mac people? I don’t really want to always have to use Dropbox, but is that the best solution? I would love your input.
In the meantime…a little life lately…
We’ve been weekend-ing HARD around here! Between volleyball and baseball, we are cheering on these two all weekend long!
Last weekend, after two volleyball games and five baseball games, we needed Mexican food STAT on Sunday night. They only had three booths available, so it as basically like date night (when date night is sitting in a booth between two tables full of kids!).
Have you been following along with this…
…I have been posting a photo every day this month!! It’s not too late for you to post one too!! Today’s topic is CREATIVE!
Also, don’t forget about this either…
…there’s still time for us to book your next vacation and enter you to win our giveaway! Email us today at mixandmatchtravelagency@yahoo.com.
Evening snuggles with my baby.
Last week, Madeley’s school had their Mother’s Day Tea and friends, IT MELTED ME. She was absolutely precious on stage singing her songs and smiling SO BIG! It was such a special moment for me and my littlest. Side note, I realized that I was one of the oldest moms there…sigh. That’s what happens with the fourth kid, you look around at all of these moms with their first babies and think…gosh, they’re so much younger than me! Hahaha!
The end of the school year makes us all tired.
It was cold and rainy on Saturday, so before we headed off to volleyball, we made muffins. I posted the yummy and easy recipe HERE today!!
They’re Banana Coconut Macadamia Nut Muffins…basically, they’re a little Hawaii in every bite 🙂 .
We were eating dinner over the weekend reminiscing about how she used to CRY HER EYES OUT when she was left with just Andrew…and now, she ADORES him.
That’s a little life lately.
Have a wonderful Wednesday!

I’m so glad you noted how many sporting events we’d had that weekend because I was looking ROUGH by Sunday night!! ???

Didn’t read all the replies but I have same trouble. We have two storage arrays that we have everything on but it’s not perfect. Ever since they discontinued Picasso I’ve been a little lost. I use Lightroom but it’s a big program.
The amount of data I have is unreal. I need commercial grade storage.

I just love that picture of you with Madeley! How sweet!

I felt the same way about pics and had SO many dating back to 2002-3. However, my husband made it a project to convert them all to Google photos. It is the GREATEST THING EVER. I don’t care for Dropbox…But am a Google-gal. The face recognition makes it even easier! I just needed a few pics of my niece for her bday and within 30 seconds – I had six of her spanning over 15 years. It was PERFECT. I am convinced that Google solves all problems. I use all things Google for home AND for my 7th grade students. Give it a try!

I am not techy at ALL and love google photos!! 🙂

I second google photos! Definitely a game changer! Can sync between phones, computer, iPads, etc. while your phone is connected to wifi while you sleep!!
Crissy says
Can you share how you store your pictures on your PC. I struggle with knowing how to do this!! Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
Just in the “my photos” section but they’re all neatly labeled and dated, so it’s easy to find them.
Jessica Kristiansen says
I have a mac and that’s how I store mine. I don’t use iphoto except to maybe do a little editing. . .they’re all organized by date in folders.
Cassie says
Thank you so much for asking this question! I switched my computer to a Mac several years ago and still haven’t found a great way to organize them. They are a nightmare-saved in multiple spots on the Mac from the transfer—and it drives me crazy! I hope someone has a solution! ??
Sarina says
Google photos is probably the best option! I also have the app on my phone so it’s easy to back up your iPhone photos 🙂
Meghan says
You could store all your pics on an external hard drive. That way you could keep your same folder structure as now and just plug it in to your Mac to access. Or go to Apple store and ask them to port them all over into iPhoto 🙂
Lee Ann says
Yes! I hope you have them all backed up (everyone should!) in case that PC crashes. My husband backs them all up on two hard drives and we keep one at my in laws house in case of theft or fire at our house. Pictures are my most prized possessions. ?. We also use google photos. Like others mentioned- the search option is amazing.
Sydney Davis says
Yes! This was going to be my suggestion as well. Years ago I ran out of storage on my MacBook and I purchased an external hard drive to store misc. documents and photos I don’t need to access all the time. I still have it and use it! It frees up a lot of space on my laptop and allows me to have my more current documents and photos on my actual computer.
Sheaffer Sims says
I remember hearing stories of Ashby standing by the back door, looking through the glass, and crying her eyes out. Love the selfie of the whole fam. That’s IMPRESSIVE to have everybody looking good in 1 selfie. Tell me it took like 20 takes! Ha! 🙂
Leanne Rose says
We have all Macs in our house… My husband is a professional photographer, he uses external hard drives to store his photos. When we leave to go on vacation he takes our family drive and his other drives and leaves them at his mothers house in case of a fire or water damage.
Andi says
I bought an external hard drive about 3 years ago when my Mac ran out of space and it was the best! Just hook it up to the computer and it’s like a giant USB. Nice and easy!
Jenny says
SmugMug for photo storage! You do pay annually and it takes a bit of work to set up but you can access it from anywhere. I researched for ages and they’re one of the oldest companies so I feel like they won’t just disappear. It’s really easy to upload the photos from your phone into the app too. I have a folder for each year and then a gallery inside for each month. Anyway, I’ve been using it for about 6 years and really like it.
Ashley says
For saving pics, check out an external drive for pictures. I don’t trust services like Dropbox. If they go out of business or delete your pics after a lapse in service (i.e. you haven’t logged in for a certain amount of time, this happened to me with Dropbox) you could loose everything.
Also, I feel the same way with a third child, the mommas keep getting younger and younger! Love all your pictures!
Traci W says
Not much help on the Mac storage options, but it’s always a good idea to back up pictures to some sort of cloud. We use amazon photos and the pictures sync automatically to the cloud from my phone. I believe it’s like $11 a year or something like that for unlimited storage if you are a prime member. Amazon photos has an app so it’s super easy to find pictures when you are hunting for them!
Lisa N says
I did away with my desktop a few years ago and only use a MacBook and my only solution is to consistently back everything up on an external hard drive (nervous that that is not always without danger of failing) so I’m anxious to read others solutions here. Do you still upload all your photos to an online site?
Cassidy Smithson says
If you have an Amazon Prime account, they have free photo storage on there. I upload all of my pictures from my MacBook to Amazon and they store nicely. ?
Andee Hart says
Have you tried Amazon Photos or Google Photos? Amazon has a photos app with free unlimited storage for prime members.
Mix and Match Mama says
I’ve never heard of them! Thank you for the rec!!
Melissa Terry says
I can totally relate to your “oldest mom there” comment, but on both ends of the spectrum. I had my oldest at 23 (he’s now 14.5) and realized at the incoming freshman parent meeting a few weeks ago I was by far the youngest mom there…BUT we are in the process of adopting an infant and in looking at our church nursery baby class, I know I will by far be the OLDEST mom in that group. Plus we have two in between so I’m all over the place but I’m oh so thankful to get to be mama to all of them. XO
Tiffany says
I highly suggest Google Photos as many others have. The benefits are auto backup from your iPhone or your computer and then you can delete off of your phone since you have instant access to your photos via the app on your phone, but you aren’t wasting space with photos. You do not have to have them auto-delete once it backs them up, but you can if you want. I don’t, but then I go and delete once I make sure they are all there. I just moved all of my old pics of my kids (who are now 23 and 21) off an old Mac to Google photos. It did not take very long to do once I figured it out. I do also use external hard drives and save my pics from my Mac there as well, but it is really just peace of mind that I have them backed up in another location “just in case”. You have a gorgeous family!!
Jen H says
Google photos will be a game changer for you! If you link the phone app all your pictures you take on your phone will automatically back up! The face recognition is amazing (as mentioned previously) when you are looking for pics with specific people. You can organize your photos into albums and access your photos when you log into google account.
Ashley says
We use google photos. Can open it on your phone or anywhere when your logged in to your google account. It’s free and I can type in my kids name and pictures of her pop up. Super user friendly.
Niki Neumann says
I LOVE google photos. You can save them from any device and it’s very easy to access (and free)!
Bethany says
I completely relate to the oldest mom in the room concept but I probably have you beat! My oldest is 20 and my youngest is 3 so when I am in a group of preschool moms, I am older than them by at least 10+ years! The only thing that makes me content is the truth that who I am as a mother now is so much more relaxed and someone who is truly enjoying these years. I have learned that so many things I thought mattered with my first few really aren’t that big of crises, and I have watched my first 2 leave for college and walk well in the world. For that my momma’s heart is happy!
Sarah says
Shutterfly or Google Photos is probably your best bet for storing photos if you want them in the cloud. I would definitely suggest an external hard drive as well though. I honestly store my photos on both so if either crashes, I have a back up. 🙂
Kaitlyn says
I’d suggest an external hard drive. You can still keep everything organized and then just plug it into your Mac when you want to access them and you can get whatever you need.
Nicole says
I use snapfish to store my photos. I have the app on my phone and I just download them onto it. It is so easy and easy to organize. Plus I can order special books, or copies or photo gifts right from the site. I have google photos on my phone that automatically download any pictures I take so if I don’t get a chance to put them on snapfish right away they are saved immediately. I have a fear that my phone will die and I’ll lose all my current pictures.
Amanda Wilson says
Omgoodness yes to the oldest mom thing. I have 5 kids and my youngest is in play school now and I feel ancient. I also feel bad because I feel like I am always in a rush and haven’t made time to get to know them. When the baby gets invited to all the birthday parties but you can never take her because the big kids have all the sports.
April says
I use google photos to store all of my pictures – it also backs up from my phone too. I also have an external drive too which helps store big items.
Erica Pollak says
I don’t have a storage idea per say but you MUST get a digital photo frame. Amazon has them. You download all your pics onto the frame and it presents a slideshow, randomly arranged, that you can watch 24./7. Put it in the kitchen, or the most used room in the house. Every time you look up, you get happy. It just plays your pics non stop!
Like I said, it’s a MUST !!
Patty Anderson says
Erica, I would love to agree with you but I have to say that our neighbor’s home burned down a few years ago and the digital photo frame was found to be the cause. Maybe only have it running when you’re home or in the room?
Becca O'Rear says
Google photos is amazing! Super easy to use for someone like me that isn’t super tech savvy. I exclusively use a mac and have had zero problems with google photos.
Marcy Cox says
Hi .. you need to get a SmugMug account. It is a paid image and video hosting site. You can organize by folders and share links to specific folders with friends or family, without giving them access to all your pictures or videos. You can access SmugMug by your phone, iPad, laptop and Know that they are safely stored in case of fire or damage to your home. We have photos of our drivers licenses, passports and other important documents stored in a password protected folder on the account for when we travel. Thanks for sharing all the great photos of your family and travels with us.
TIFFANY says
Please do a post on the photo storage once you do your due diligence 🙂
Kalynn says
Google photos for sure! You can put an app on your phone and also your computer and when you open them it just automatically transfers over your pics that haven’t been saved yet. It puts them in chronological order and also has recognition features so it’s still easy to find what you’re looking for! I’m sure you could put them into folders and organize them whatever way you want as well, I just haven’t done that.
Anna Brown says
I purchased a tiny 128GB USB drive from my favorite place, i.e. Amazon (link: SanDisk 128GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive – SDCZ430-128G-G46 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07855LJ99/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_qcb3CbPGT3XH5). I just use a regular Finder window to organize my pictures into folders. Super easy! Plus the USB drive is tiny so I just always leave it connected! I use a MacBook Air so I’m unsure if you have a USB drive port.
Julia says
I use “Photos” on my MacBook and it automatically organizes it into a timeline. I also create monthly albums (e.g. May 2019) so I can easily find things fro a specific month. I back it all up to iCloud and it’s been working great!

Just wondering, as a Christian, how your family handles Sunday youth sports? Obviously, as a Christian I know that attending church does not make you a Christian. But I do struggle with the idea that sports are put ahead of church/church family several months of the year for many families. Many families in my area are committed to Sunday sports and therefore do not commit to teach classes, help with nursery or service the church in any regular, dependable way. And also let me say that I LOVE sports and my kids are very involved in multiple sports just not on Sundays.
Mix and Match Mama says
At this point, it hasn’t been a huge issue (thankfully!). K only has volleyball tournaments on Saturdays and most of Smith’s Sunday tournaments have worked around sports (they’ve been able to play and then go or go and then play). He did miss church a few weeks ago, but the girls and I still went. I don’t know what we’ll do in the future, but so far, it really hasn’t been an issue.
Amy S says
It’s okay being an older mom. You’re much wiser and calmer than those newbies. I’m 31 and about to have my first with my husband who is 42! No one will be an older Dad than him! 🙂
Debbra Weber says
Thank you for bringing up the photo storage topic. My oldest just graduated from high school. I had to search and search for pictures for his display table, etc. I’m anxious to check out the options you all have suggested and start organizing my pictures so it will be easier when my youngest graduates in a few years. Thanks, everyone!!
Stephanie says
Creating a Google Drive I think is the best option! You can create an endless amount of folders and access them all through any device.
Stephanie says
You can also share albums with people!
Beth says
Hey Shay! I use Shutterfly to save a lot of my pics, it allows you to tag people with names so you can search for them and then if I want to print or create a photo book, everything is already right there. I create folders by the years as well. I usually do ‘mass’ uploads every now and then, but you can choose it to automatically sync to your phone.
On the MAC you can also create a 2nd photo library. Here is a link with instructions, http://osxdaily.com/2015/04/13/make-new-photo-library-photos-mac-os-x/
This 2nd library will be on your computer but WONT sync to your phone/cloud. I use it for my pics I take on my Cannon and don’t want to take up space in the cloud and will only need to use on the computer. I know in the photos app on your phone you can start tagging people and photos will start “smart” tagging people automatically and you can ‘confirm’ them. Since it also saves the location, it’s useful when you don’t know ‘when’ you took the picture but remember you were on a trip to ‘Xxxx’. I’m would think this feature is available on the MAC app as well.
Grace N. says
My advice is to use external hard drives! I have them all labeled and I store everything inside of them. Whenever I need something, I just plug it and there it is! Makes life so much easier.
Hannah says
I’m a photographer so I have a ton of photos. My main workspace is my Mac but we have a MacBook also and do it so that everything works the same. I load current year on an external drive, I use Lightroom to import all my images so it it quick and painless. Any that are on my laptop, or any images from my husband or kids phones, Go Pro, or cameras are stored on the laptop and then once a month I move them to the external drive. However my biggest suggestion is to find a cloud system that uploads your images automatically. My cloud system scans my desktop, my MacBook and all my external drives each night and saves anything new. So basically my images are double saved and doesn’t depend on me to remember to save them to the cloud.
Kristen says
My husband backs all our pictures and videos up to an external hard drive. Years ago our PC crashed and we lost so much stuff.
Kayla A Bruce says
Cute, cute! I’m a Mac person all the way– iPhone, Mac laptop, Apple watch, etc. But the BEST way to store photos is Google Photos. It does take a bit to transfer everything over, but once it’s in there, you can organize it however you want. Also, you can download an app on your phone, so whenever you are connected to WiFi, you can just open the app, and it will automatically upload any new photos into Google Photos. I usually just go in quick after that and put them in whatever album I want. Super easy!
Sonia says
If you have Office 365 (word, excel, etc.), they give you 1 TB of cloud storage and you can store all of your photos up there. My photos were taking up too much space on my Mac, so I ended up throwing everything up there and it helped clean up a lot of space off my macbook – it’s also easy to search through and by date which helps!
Holley Cavaliere says
Ok, so after reading all these comments I’m going to be looking into Google Photos and SmugMug. My husband and I’ve been trying to figure out how to store our photos too. I have our photos on the iCloud and iPhoto–which slows down our Mac big time! We’re going to be purchasing an external hard drive too.
I have to say I just love your blog Shay! I’ve been reading it for so many years but have never commented. lol! Anyway, thanks for always bringing cheer to my day! I’ve actually started a blog and you’ve been one of the biggest inspirations! Thanks girl!

I just use iPhotos on my MacBook. All the photos from our iPhones transfer over automatically without using Dropbox. Then we use an Apple AirPort Time Capsule. It works as our router and external hard drive and automatically backs up our entire computer every day. Hope that helps!
Morie Smith says
I tried Google Photo and didn’t find it super user friendly (and it was taking a sweet forever to load all my pics), so I switched to Amazon Photo and LOVE it! You get unlimited storage for free with Prime and the app uploads everything for me automatically. They organize everything by month/ year and face recognition, and then you can make sub categories as well (like it recognized and grouped all our wedding photos together under a tab). They also offer printing and photo books at super reasonable prices, and they are really good quality. I can’t say enough good things about it!
Arika says
I agree that the Mac is not nearly as intuitive and user friendly in terms of photo storage. The PC is really much easier to keep them organized and easily accessible in folders. I think I’ll go the external hard drive route for the Mac. I know a lot of people use Google photos and sites like Shutterfly, but I don’t want that to be my primary mode of storage. Glad it’s not just me with the Mac issues. I do love my MacBook for most other things. Good luck!
Laura says
I do not like Dropbox for pictures but have grown to love Google photos. It backs up my pictures across all devices!
Katie M Stuen says
Hi Shay!
I had the same problem a few months ago with my PC& Mac. I finally gave up on both and downloaded the Shutterfly app. They let you store has many pictures as you want and it is SO easy to just upload them from your camera roll (Iphone). You can create different albums& organize them however you would like. It is so convenient because I HATE having 5,000 pictures on my camera roll, so now I just upload them to Shutterfly and delete them from my camera roll. Also, if I want to post an old picture or something I can just go into Shutterfly app and save it again to my camera roll. GAME CHANGER! Also, you can get unlimited 4×6 pictures mailed to you, only pay for shipping!
Kaytlin Karr says
Mac Nerd here ?. I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time and can only imagine that you have a bazillion pics! I personally like using external hard drives to store my photos because I don’t like storing things in the cloud as sometimes I do take pics of important documents, and I don’t want those things to automatically zoom to the cloud where it could even have the slightest chance of someone else accessing. That being said, you can purchase these tiny external hard drives that have a ton of storage for a relatively modest price (2TB is ~$75); however, there is a catch: even if the external hard drive says “can use on both PC or Mac,” once you plug it to use on one, you cannot just hop over to the other to open the file the way you can with a USB jump drive. So once you make the external hard drive the PC’s, it’s always the PC’s, and vice versa unless you want to go through a bunch of nerdy steps to re-configure it that is more trouble than it’s worth. If you do go the external hard drive route, I would recommend downloading the free, personal-use version of TeamViewer on your PC (teamviewer.com), then get the TeamViewer app on your Mac and use the File Transfer feature on TeamViewer to move the pics over to your Mac (it’s like dragging & dropping). Buy the external hard drive to connect to your Mac, then use Time Machine to back up your Mac. Store your external hard drive in a fireproof safe! Even if you don’t end up using external hard drives for your photo storage, it is a good practice to back up your computer with Time Machine to an external hard drive in case the unthinkable happens…Time Machine is so awesome because it’s like accessing your entire computer on a specific date in the past. OR if you upgrade to a new Mac, using Time Machine seamlessly moves everything over to your new Mac so it’s like having all your old stuff at your new place with everything in the same place. And to add to my super-long comment, if you don’t like using the Photos app on your Mac to move pics from your phone to Mac, open the Application called “Image Capture” and you can plug in your phone, and move everything over in file folder groups if that is more similar to the way you did it on your PC and you like that system. Good luck with finding what works for you!

My mother would definitely win in the older mom category. My oldest brother is 22 years older than my youngest brother. She actually just became a grandmother and her youngest is 7. Needless to say, she does not feel comfortable at his school events.

I work with a company called Forever. I have purchased permanent storage through them that is triple backed up and can be passed down to my kids. They have an app for your phone that allows you to automatically back up to them. You can organize right with them so everything is easily found. If others have the app you can share photos with easily. It is awesome.
Kate says
I am a MacBook lover too and moved completely over. I bought an external had drive and only use it for photos, and I keep it in a fire safe so God forbid if anything happens I won’t lose them either!
StacyH says
Also google photos deletes stuff randomly. It’s very sad. I had stuff in there from certain dates and now it’s only like on or two photos. It deleted an entire trip to NYC in 2017. I’ve been using it since before that trip.
So I back up to Shutterfly AND google photos and we store originals on 6TB mirror raids.
But if you have everything on Google bewarned – stuff does disappear. And you have no recourse because you don’t own anything.
Kalli says
At work and at home I have a few external hard drives! They are pretty inexpensive ($30 at most) and they store you photos in the exact same file structure you have them in on your computer. Just drag and drop and done! You can plug the hard drive into any computer, Mac or Windows, and grab anything you want. Google photos and smug mug and dropbox are fine, but you have to reorganize your files once you upload them, there is a monthly fee, and you always run the risk of something happening to their servers (i.e. hack or shut down) and losing everything. External hard drive is always safe!
Courtney says
Google Photos is the only way! 🙂

My husband manages most of our technology stuff, but I do know we store our photos on external hard drives. It’s nice bc it works with both our Mac and our PC. I also like that we can store the hard drive itself in our safe. I’m not techy at all, but I’ve been able to navigate it easily so far!

I’ve never really considered myself techy but I do only use Apple products (MacBook, iPhone, IPad, Apple Watch)… so here’s my recommendation. Get an external hard drive, there’s a brand on amazon that apple sells in their store called LaCie size 2T (it’s small and light you could carry it without adding weight) You can move all your photos to that that’s on your PC… this way you aren’t taking up space on your MacBook! Also, macbooks have a back up system called Time Machine. You could set up that external hard dive as a place for your MacBook to automatically back up using time machine so you don’t risk loosing anything!
I also use iCloud for everything on my phone, I just pay more per month for extra storage. I love that it backs up every night (because it’s plugged in and on WiFi) and I don’t have to think about it. My stuff is safe in the cloud, and I can access it on all my devices!

Hi! Photography is my hobby and I have thousands upon thousands of photos. I’ve been using Flickr for years (used to be free but now it’s $6ish for unlimited storage). I can group photos into albums, arrange them however I want (newest, oldest, etc.) and they can be public or private. Also includes a shareable link and downloadable option which is great for sending albums or photos to family and friends. Highly recommend! You can also import photos straight from your phone to Flickr if you’re big on phone pictures. This probably sounds like an ad by now but I have no complaints about it haha. From a huge fan and follower of yours for years…hugs!

I have a MacBook Pro and my fiancé has a Pc. We back up everything (our computers, tablets, iPhone photos) wirelessly to a server which you can access through a domain (web address) and through an app. Once the first backup completes, it is so simple to access everything through the app. It also automatically backs up new information when we are connected to WiFi. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more info!
