It’s a day in the life of us!
Every year, I typically document two days in the life of us (one during the summer and one during the school year). I randomly pick a date on the calendar and then when it pops up, I start taking my pics. This way, I’m not planning my post around certain things, it’s just a random/normal/typical day in the life. On this particular day, I didn’t take that many pics because the wheels kind of came off and by the end of the day, we were a hot mess. I feel like we haven’t had a “normal” day in quite some time. I don’t know about you, but when I’m off my routine, everything seems a little out of sorts. Anyway, here you go. This was our October 15th…
I wasn’t going to the gym on this morning, so I had my alarm set for 4:40. Up and at ’em!
First stop, coffee and Jesus 🙂 . I did this Bible study years and years ago when it first came out (maybe around 2010?), but Beth Moore has updated it, so I’m excited to be working through it once more. I love the story of David.
At my desk to do some work. While I was working, Andrew popped in to say bye. He was headed to the airport to fly to NYC to see the Yankees play the Astros. I kissed him goodbye, told him I loved him, and that I hoped the Yankees lost 😉 .
Around 5:40, I went to do my Peloton since I couldn’t go to the gym that morning…
I try a variety, but Robyn is always my fave!
The rest of the morning was a blur! I got the kids’ breakfasts together (I ate one box of those cauliflower frittata things from Trader Joe’s), boiled water for their thermoses and woke them up. They came downstairs around 6:35 and ate their breakfast. I took one pic…three smiles and one looking down at her breakfast with that “I hate waking up early” look.
Getting lunches together, breakfast together and emptying the dishwasher all at the same time.
After the kids were done eating, we did a bit of homework. Ashby and I worked at the bar while Madeley sat there and listened to her read books to me. Then, everyone went and got dressed for the day. This kid…
…picked out her own shirt to wear in honor of Daddy going to NYC.
After I dropped off the big three at school, I sat back down to do a bit of work until it was time for Madeley to go to school. We carpool every day and on this particular day, it wasn’t my turn to drop off or pick up. She headed off to school at 8:45, and then I showered and got ready for the day. I had to be quick because…
…first, I had to run by Trader Joe’s to grab some things and then…
…Ashby had an OT appointment during her recess time at school, so I swung by and grabbed her for this appointment.
I read my Kindle in the waiting room while she worked with the therapist.
When we left, I dropped her back off at school and then…
…came home and heated up leftovers for lunch. I had my Simple Sausage, Peppers and Onions along with some pasta with parmesan and that tempura cauliflower from Trader Joe’s (all from the night before). I ate and then…
…was back at my desk by 11:10 to work until 3:00 (along with my second cup of coffee).
Hmmmm…here is when the wheels start to kind of come off. The kiddos came home from school, and I took this pic of Mades as we were starting to unpack bags and get snacks. Then she walked off, and I assumed she was playing. Then…I found her sound asleep. Hmmmmm…I thought she was just tired after a full day at school.
I folded and put away some laundry and then…
…it was time for Ashby to head to dance! We had dance, baseball practice and a flag football game. While Ashby was at dance and Smith was at baseball, Kensington and I decided to make dinner…
…while I had been at Trader Joe’ earlier, I bought stuff to make chicken tacos. Since it was just the kids and me, I wanted something that would be easy, easy, easy!
I made my plate extra spicy! 🙂 Have you tried this…
…it is so delish!! Madeley kind of picked at her plate, but Kensington and I ate everything and then packed away the leftovers for Smith and Ashby. Madeley still seemed really tired. Next, we loaded up in the car and picked up Ashby from dance and drove the 25 minutes to flag football. Madeley fell asleep in the car on the way there. When we arrived, she was so tired, so I carried her in and she slept in my lap the entire game. By the time we left the game, she felt really hot, so I called this at home healthcare service that we have locally and made an appointment for them to come at 8:00 PM to check her out. (It was probably 7:15 at this point.) We hurried home, the kids showered and I heated up dinner for Ashby and Smith. Then, one of the Physician Assistants that work at this at home urgent care place arrived…
…Miss Madeley tested negative for both strep and the flu but it appeared that she did have a virus and a fever of 103.
I tucked these two cuties into bed in Smith’s room, and then said goodnight to Kensington in her room. After that, I got my sweet girl all bathed and in fresh pjs…
…before tucking her into my bed so that I could keep an eye on her all night.
I showered and read my Kindle until 10:15. Sweet girl! This virus kept us home from school and tucked inside the rest of the week. As much as I hated that she didn’t feel well, I tried to soak up all of those extra snuggles 🙂 .
Okay, that’s a day in the life of us! xo

Bless sweet Madeley’s heart! It’s so hard when your little is sick. Love this post. I always love a good day in the life post!
Sarah says
I love to sneak into your day! I don’t love that your sweet girl was sick though!! Question, did you eat just that in the day? Or did you add any snacks or brownie at the end? Thanks!!
Mix and Match Mama says
That was it for that day!
Sarah says
How do you not snack and eat after dinner?? I have to know your secret!! 😉
Mix and Match Mama says
Andrew and I almost always have a brownie after dinner, but since he was out of town, I didn’t. I don’t know? I think mid-day snacking is more my thing rather than evening snacking.
Summer says
I know you used to eat the Betty Crocker Low Fat Brownie mix (I think?!), but I can’t find it locally anymore! Do you still use the same mix/recipe?
Mix and Match Mama says
I just use any old box I see at my store and then always add in stuff like butterscotch chips!
Sheaffer Sims says
Sweet Madeley girl. So thankful she’s better!
Joellyn says
Hi Shay thanks for this interesting account of a typical day! I’m fascinated the kids still do homework in the morning. Can you do a post on this? My kiddos are starting to have more homework, and I’m considering trying to make them do it in the morning instead of after school when they’re tired. Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Ashby is only in first grade, so she definitely has time to complete all of hers in the morning. Sometimes, my big kids will do a little after school, but as I’ve mentioned, our kids at our school get homework assignments on a Monday and they’re due the following Monday (or Friday to Friday), so my kids have plenty of time to work on it all week long in the morning, over the weekend, or a little after school since nothing is due the very next day.
Tamicka says
I’m not sure I understand. Are they receiving homework a week in advance of lessons? If so, how are they expected to complete assignments without understanding the material? Or, are they receiving homework for material they’ve learned over the current week – and as many as five or seven days ago? That doesn’t seem like a good means of reinforcement.
Thanks so much!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m not a fan of our elementary homework and/or grading system (it’s district wide and not just our school). The homework is a mix of both what they have learned and what they’re continuing to learn. Sometimes, my kids skip over sections and come back to it at the end of the week. Their teachers always have resources online with videos/lesson guides to aid, but yes, it’s weird.
Narci says
Kensington looks so grown up!! What a busy day in the life. I’m so glad Madeley is feeing better now!
Lisa Moore says
What a busy day! I noticed your jack-o-lantern mug. Where did you get it from?
Mix and Match Mama says
Macy’s last year 🙂
Alison Liudahl says
Hi Shay! Do you try to stay away from any snacking in between meals? Do you make any protein drinks in your day? Thanks for sharing a day in the life post and so thankful your sweet Madeley girl is better. Have a nice day.
Mix and Match Mama says
No, typically I always have an afternoon snack. On this particular day, for no real reason at all, I just didn’t. Whisps have been a popular snack around here lately for me.
Laura says
Im sorry Madeley is sick. How wonderful to have a physician come to your home though! That’s very convenient. I must say, you are really great at time management and getting a lot done. I love these posts of yours because they inspire me. ❤ have a great day!
Elspeth says
I love your day in the life posts, they are my favorite. I love the routine days and the simplicity of it. So glad Madeley is doing better.

Where did you get the black wire shelves in Smith’s room? Glad Madeley is on the mend.
Mix and Match Mama says
Pottery Barn Kids (I think?!)
Courtney says
I need to try Robyn on the Peloton! I’ve been loving Cody lately! Especially his 90s-early 2000 pop rides!
May says
Is Kensington now sleeping in her own room? Or does she still sleep in The little girls room?
Mix and Match Mama says
She still sleeps with someone, but since Madeley was in my bed, she decided to sleep in her room.
James Mae says
Hey shay do you have a rule that your kids have to eat a certain amount of food at dinner? or do you just let them eat when they Are hungry? I am running into a problem with any four year old not wanting to eat much but I want him to eat something.
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t have a rule. For the most part, my kids are good eaters, so if there’s a day that they aren’t that hungry/don’t want to eat a lot, I let it go. I always think food behaviors go in stages, maybe you’re in one right now?
James Mae says
Ok thanks so much shay!
Julie says
I love these posts too! There is something so comforting in the fact that moms all over the country in all types of cities and towns are doing the same things…heating thermoses for kids, taking care of them when they’re sick, trying to squeeze in exercise and reading…Even though the online community you’ve created may not know each other in real life, you’ve made it seem like everyone is a friend here! I bow down to you because you handled that day so gracefully! I probably would have been on the phone screaming at my husband to catch the next flight home-lol! I am so glad Madeley is better and hope that your weeks go back to “normal” soon. I have three kids and I know that it leaves you feeling off when your routine gets tampered with. Thanks for creating this supportive online community!
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!!!! Julie, I could not agree more!!!!!
Angie Sharp says
On the Beth Moore bible study…. do you have the videos/DVDs as well, or do you just get the study guide and do it that way? I’ve wanted to re do some of her studies that I’ve done in the past but didn’t know how it would be to do them without the videos/DVDs. She always points out things in her tapings that I never saw on my own when doing the study guide.
Mix and Match Mama says
I rent them from Lifeway on my phone!! I always watch them with my studies.
Ashleigh Coser says
Do you have any suggestions on which book to start with? I haven’t read Beth Moore but am interested!
Mix and Match Mama says
I always think her Breaking Free study is the one she’s most known for and probably a great one to start with if you haven’t done one before. I hope you love it!
Anna says
If you really want to spice up your tacos, use fresh jalapeños! I personally think the pickled ones aren’t spicy at all haha
Laci says
Poor Mades! I am so glad she is feeling better and you sound like me, all the sports and all the things throw off my regular schedule and I feel frazzled sometimes!
Sammi says
Love this! Do Ashby and Smith always sleep together? Is there a post on all of your sleeping situations?
Mix and Match Mama says
We have a calendar and schedule because everyone loves sleeping in Smith’s room 😉 . They always either sleep two and two or all four in one room (two will use sleeping bags).
McCoy says
Hey shay have you ever eaten At the trails end restaurant at Disney?
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t believe I have!
Bethany says
Okay, a few things…
1. I am so glad Madeley is feeling better!
2. Your skin looks great!!
3. Now I want chicken tacos before 9:00am. 😉

HI Shay! Have you done a Peloton post? I would love to hear your thoughts! I have never done a cycling class but have heard awesome things especially for those who can’t get to the gym but still want a great workout.
Mix and Match Mama says
I did about two years ago. It’s absolutely amazing! There are thousands of classes along with thousands more that are off the bike (yoga, strength, stretching, running, cardio, etc). We have had it for two years and use it daily!
Cathy says
Googling urgent care that does home visits. When my boys were young I would have loved this service! Glad Madeley is feeling better.
Mix and Match Mama says
It is AMAZING!!!
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
I’m so glad Madeley is feeling better! And that jalapeno sauce looks like it’s right up my alley!
Marie says

Mix and Match Mama says
Hobby Lobby!
Mary Smith says
gosh poor baby and she was just getting over the RSV…its so hard when they feel down like that
Mix and Match Mama says
That was last week, so that was actually her being diagnosed with it. Poor thing.
Christina says
Hi Shay – can you tell me where you got the Marvel decor in Smith’s room?
Mix and Match Mama says
Hobby Lobby!
Lea Culp says
Talk about “super woman!” You have a plan and work that plan and I’m sure it makes you all the more efficient. So enjoyed this post and seeing those cute kiddos. Gosh, I remember Drs. coming to our house when I was little but haven’t heard of that in ages. How wonderful! Have a wonderful weekend!
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s the most amazing urgent care system!
Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom says
Do you have the recipe for those chicken tacos? I am going to grab that sauce at TJ’s my next visit. And, what did you serve on the side? Is that a salad or something from TJ’s?
Thanks!

Mix and Match Mama says
I took the already cooked chicken breast strips from the salad/dip/soup section and put it in my skillet with some EVOO, salt, pepper and chili powder. (It comes completely plain and unseasoned.) I just heated it up a minute and then we took our tortillas and added that, the sauce, some candied jalapenos, grated cheese and chopped green onions!
Nicole says
Yum!! And the salad??
grace says
So glad to hear she is feeling better! She’s lucky to have such a great mama!
Do your kids sleep when you exercise? If they wake up, are they pretty good at keeping themselves occupied/not fighting with each other so that you can finish?
Where did you get the art in your bedroom? Is it all the same artist? It’s beautiful!
Also, love those pillows with the fur trim! Do you remember where those were from?
Do your kids shower/bathe every night?
What size bed is Smith’s?
Thanks Shay!!
Mix and Match Mama says
They typically never wake up while I’m working out because it’s so early. The art has been collected over many years by many artists from many places, thank you for noticing it! The pillows are Pottery Barn, yes, they bathe every night and it’s a full 🙂
Diana says
That home healthcare service sounds amazing, I wish every town had that! Glad Madeley is feeling better!
Landree says
Is madeley still going to have a Peppa Pig birthday party with her friends?
Mix and Match Mama says
We have pivoted to something else now. We were going to go to Peppa Peg World, and I had already purchased the tickets, so when she got sick and we had to cancel, I went ahead and gave her friends their tickets so they could go. We are going to do something else now.
Laur says
You should do an updated hair tutorial!!
Amy D. says
I always love these types of posts. Poor Madeley. I’m so glad she is feeling much better! Thank you for sharing your day! 🙂

Random question of the day! How do you get your camera on your lock screen?!! I would looove to figure that out!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I think it comes that way, right? I have no idea??? I don’t think it ever wasn’t there?!
Victoria says
Omg! What a cute tap bag! Where did you find it if you don’t mind me asking? My daughter loves her tap class and this would be so cute to hold her things!
Mix and Match Mama says
There is a little dance shop on our town square, and we bought it there. It says “ballet” on the other side with slippers. 🙂

Debbie says
Great post Shay! I seriously do not know how you do it all! I made those chicken tacos tonight and bought the jalapeño sauce. I mixed up the TJS southwest salad and threw it in the tacos and we all loved them! Just delicious and such a great quick meal! I get tired of fixing the same stuff all the time so this was perfect! Sorry Madeley was not feeling well again. Poor little thing! ?
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m so glad you tried it!!!
Kathy L Floyd says
Goodness…I remember those days. I was exhausted at 11:10AM. Thanks for always sharing your life with us.
Mix and Match Mama says
Bahahahahaha! YES!
Erica Werner says
Always love these posts. It’s just so interesting seeing a peek into other peoples lives. Sweet Madeley. Sorry she was so sick. Glad she is well now. Question, how long Do you typically do the peloton? Like this particular morning, how long did you ride?
Mix and Match Mama says
I always do 20 to 30 minute rides. Andrew is insane and does 45 minute rides. On this morning, I did a 20 minute HIIT ride!
Katie says
Okay–I have a random question for you–do you have someone who cleans your house for you, or do you and Andrew do everything yourself? I know you’ve talked about how you and Andrew are neat freaks so the house is pretty much clean all the time, and Andrew usually does chores every morning. And you basically don’t sleep (hello 4am alarm) but I’m curious if you also have someone who does the deeper cleaning stuff for you. I’ve never heard you mention it on your blog, probably because it’s not a super interesting topic. But I just don’t get how you would have time for everything you do! I feel like I’d need Adderral or something to accomplish as much as you get done–bahahah!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes, I’ve mentioned it several times that when I opened my travel agency, we hired someone to come and do the big cleaning (mopping, dusting, etc) once a week. We pick up/clean up daily, but we do have someone come through once a week and do that other stuff that isn’t a daily chore.
Sophie says
Your day seems to be really busy. Managing between kids’ school, the basketball and dance practices along with work from home, must really stress you out. But I love how you manage everything so efficiently.
