13 years ago today…


Thirteen years ago today, I started a blog.

Guys, thirteen years is a long time to do anything, but I feel like it’s a really long time to be a blogger.

That’s 4,602 posts.

Over 200,000 blog comments.

Six cookbooks.

More than a handful of national television appearances.

One travel agency.

Four dogs.

Over 30 countries.

One Bachelor.

Two moves.

Four kids.

Two trips to China.

The loss of a best friend to cancer.

A lot has happened in 13 years.

For those of you who are regular around here, you know that 13 is my lucky number.

When I made First Lieutenant on the high school drill team, I was number 13.

I graduated college December 13.

We were married March 13.

Our first dog was born February 13.

When you add all of the letters in Shay Lynn Shull, it’s 13 (I had to marry a five letter last name boy for that to work!).

Thirteen is my number, so I’m excited about my 13th year as a blogger.

These days people might call me “an influencer”, but I want to make sure you guys understand that it’s YOU who influence me.  I started this blog 26 years old, married, no kids and as a life insurance specialist.  I’ve grown SO MUCH over the last 13 years and without a doubt, I would not be the person I am today without the influence of YOU!

I don’t care how old I get, I will always, always, always think back to this relationship as one of my most profound.

You pray for me.  You love on me.  You send me cards in the mail.  You email me funny jokes and memes.  You send me birth announcements, Christmas cards, pics from your travels.  You make my recipes.  You let me plan your vacations.  You ask me what I should name your new baby.  You show me your new dog.  We talk about everything from books to holidays and a whole lifetime of stuff in-between.  You are a constant presence in my life, and I sincerely cannot imagine what kind of woman I’d be today without all of you pouring into me.

These last 12 months have been our most trying.  From Celiac to an un-diagnosed liver problem, Madeley being in the hospital on her 5th birthday, Ashby having the worst surgery to date (and also being hospitalized after), an intestinal biopsy, a hysterectomy, elbow and bicep surgery, a massive amount of coyotes, homeschooling, a pandemic that paralyzed my business and a flood…it has been a year.

BUT WE HAVE FELT SO LOVED.

Guys, I could not have gone through this madness without your prayers.

Honestly.  I know my family and friends pray for us, but YOU ARE PRAYING TOO and WE FEEL IT.  You have prayed me into peace over the last year.  You have.  I know it was you.  There are not enough words to thank you all enough for talking to God about my family.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much.

I am a hot mess who sits behind a computer, but for some reason, you guys want to pop by and say hi every day and from the bottom of my heart, please know how much I appreciate it.

Anyway, happy 13th anniversary to ME 😉 .

I wouldn’t be me without you.

    Congratulations on 13 years!!!!! My youngest daughters birthday is March 13th. Seems like yesterday she was born and now she’s 24. You blink and they are grown. Thanks for all your inspiration and realness. I won’t repeat what others have said but thought 13 years deserved a comment. Thanks for all you do. I sincerely appreciate it.
