Happpppppy Wednesday!
Okay…I need help.
You guys know that technologically-speaking, I’m about 10 years behind the times. I’m always the last to the “what’s popular” party, so I’m just now discovering…podcasts. Ha!
About three weeks ago, I went out for a run and thought I’d listen to a podcast. I’ve been listening to several since June that are more faith-based/diverse and have really enjoyed them while I run BUT a few weeks ago, I thought I’d change it up and listen to Dirty John.
(Let’s reiterate the fact here that I’m so behind the times when it comes to podcasts because I really think Dirty John was relevant three years ago…)
So, I listened and LOVED it!!! I was so sucked in and could.not.quit.
And then I finished.
And then, I wanted to listen to more podcasts, but I’m so overwhelmed with the choices!! I went down a rabbit hole on my podcast app of “true crime” (sounds super fascinating!) “The Office podcast” (I love inside scoop on TV shows!!), “Real Housewives chats” (so interesting!)…and finally landed on nothing because I really have no clue where to start.
Someone, please help me!
I really liked the true crime aspect of Dirty John, but I think I’d be interested in others too! Ideas? Suggestions? It made getting out and running waaaaaaay more fun to have something to listen to while I was out.
Erika and I have…
…our Bestie Breakdown podcast where we chat about life, but we all know that she’s the Podcast person in the relationship. Ha! If you have any mom life podcast suggestions similar to ours, I’ll take those too! Basically, give me all of your podcast tips today, please!!!
And one last thing before we go…
…don’t forget to enter to win my FAVORITE DAY GIVEAWAY!! Four lucky winners will each get to pick either a new slow cooker, Instant Pot or Airfryer! All the details and how you enter is right HERE. If you win and pick the Airfryer, you should make…
…my Air Fryer Apple French Toast 🙂 .
I’m off for our (for now) last day of virtual learning! Tomorrow, our kids head back into the building!! xo
Laura Smith says
Listen to Crime Junkies, Dr Death, and Up and Vanished! They are my favorite true crime podcasts!
Emily Morris says
If you want a true-crime podcast that will make you feel all the feels for the victim’s survivors you MUST. LISTEN. TO. Culpable…must.
Brittany says
The Popcast and The Big Boo Cast are a lot of fun! Also, Jamie Iveys. Living with Landyn. The Good Life with Saxon and Steve
Kimbrough says
I couldn’t get into it. There wasn’t enough evidence to the contrary in the first 3-4 episodes… but everyone feels that way to some extent when it comes to suicide.
Kacie says
Crime Junkie is the best. Ashley Flowers is the host and she is such a fantastic story teller. Plus there are TONS of episodes and they are about 40ish minutes long so it would be perfect for a run!
Megan says
Yes Dr Death!!
Tara says
I second Crime Junkies and Up and Vanished is a good one too!
Angie says
Crime junkie is okay. Their voices annoy me bad and they are kinda cheesy narrators. S Town is so good. Payne Lindsey’s podcast about Tara Grinstead season 1 Up and Vanished is great!
Lyndsey says
True Crime Garage! they were around before crime junkies..I feel like crime junkies just became a girl version of true crime garage and actually copied a lot of their episodes it seems.
Valerie Bostwick says
Definitely check out In the Dark; both seasons are good, but I think Season 2 is the best. If you’re squirmy with true crime involving children I’d skip season 1 as well. But season 2 is a case that just went to the Supreme Court this year!
Imagined Life is also a fun one, contained episodes ❤️ Best of luck on the podcast journey, it is fun!
Allison says
Definitely In the Dark season 2!
Jen says
Ali on the run!
Mary says
I love listening to true crime while I walk! Some of my favorites are Up and Vanished, STown, Dr. Death, Serial, The Thing About Amy, and Dateline has you too.
I can’t wait to see what others are listening to.
Megan jeffries says
I love podcasts! I listened to you on Jamie Ivy’s.
S-town – short (6 or 8 episodes), interesting story
Juicy scoop – reality tv recaps (including bachelor), comedian guests, celebrity guests, juicy scoop guests (I.e. girl who dated a Chicago dirty John)
Armchair expert – very good interviewer, a-list celebrities, funny
Alison Rosen is your new best friend – good interviewer, interesting guests
Why won’t you date me? – funny, Nicole is very honest and still a ball of a sunshine
Modern love – short, celebrities read a selected modern love piece (run every Friday in NYT)
Also just type in anyone’s name who you’d be interested in hearing an interview in the podcast app and see if they have been guests on episodes of random podcasts and give those a listen.
Lauren says
Dr. Death, Crime Junkies
My son and I like to listen to The Big Fib. He is a 4th grader.
Mary Shaul says
The Big Boo podcast is one of my favorites! Melanie Shankle and Sophie Hudson chat about all kinds of things and they are hilarious!

Yes to the Big Boo Cast!!
Amy Heinl says
I live the Deck the Hallmark podcast. The guys are hilarious and review the Hallmark movies plus they do interviews with a lot of the Hallmark stars. I also love Melissa Rycoft and her husband’s podcast. Great family, marriage moments plus a little bit of reality “tea” thrown in. It’s called Logically Irrational…
Melissa says
I love The Big Boo podcast!
Jackie Causey says
Totally agree
Jacquelyn Jenkins says
Completely concur on the BigBoo cast … they are laugh out loud funny, heartwarming, all the good fashion/product tips, parenting advice, and yummy recipes. Hands down my favorite podcast!

Paula McKaughan says
Big Boo Cast!!!! Yes ma’am!!! ??
Tiffany Buhr says
I was getting on to say this one as well! So fun! I also really enjoy…That Sounds Fun by Annie F Downs!
Lauren says
Serial!! It’s the podcast I first started with and I COULD NOT STOP! The first season is much better than the second in my opinion. It’s a true story about a high school girl who gets murdered and her boyfriend at the time gets put in jail, but he may be innocent. The podcast host goes digging into what happened. Its soooo good!
Also, Even the Rich does podcast series on famous people. They have one on the royal family (like Princess Diana, Harry, Meghan, etc.) They also had one on Beyonce/Jay Z and talk about the infamous elevator incident with Solange. I was hooked!!
Happy listening!
Jami Hamrick says
Serial season 1 but Dr. Death is one of my favorites happens in the metroplex. STown is also good. Currently listening to deep cover- the drug wars and it is good. But Dr Death is always my recommendation when people start on podcasts.
Ali says
Crime Junkie!
Jill Shanklin says
Serial!! You’ll love it!! I liked both seasons honestly. The 3rd fell flat for me, but I started listening to Sarah’s other podcasts as a result of Serial
Dana says
One of my very favorite recent finds is Imagined Life. They tell a story about a person as if they are them and you spend the whole time trying to guess what famous person they are talking about. There are so many fascinating episodes and sometimes I even go back and listen a second time to see if I missed any clues early on. I also listen to all the true crimes podcasts listed above. When I’ve had my fill of true crime this is my next go to. I’d love to tell you who some of the people are but that would spoil the surprise!
Jami says
I don’t listen to a lot of Podcasts but when I do it’s usually The Popcast with Knox and Jamie. It’s all pop culture based… as they say they talk about things that do not matter but entertain.
For true crime I would listen to the first season of Serial. It was released in 2014 or 2015. I would listen while I was out running, sucked me in good. Since then I haven’t really listened but that season 1 was great.
Mindy says
I love the Popcast!!! Glad it’s Wednesday 😉
Andrea H says
Yes yes yes to The Popcast!!
Emily H. says
The Popcast with Knox and Jamie is my absolute favorite! It’s hilarious! I agree with the fist season of Serial too–it’s what got me hooked on podcasts.
Laura says
I love “The Moth”. It is just people telling true short stories from their life! I can’t wait to read the comments section today and get ideas too!
Rosa Dunn says
For true crime Serial is my favorite. Also, Up and Vanished, S-Town, Crime Junkies. Currently listening to Very Presidential and love that!!
Laurie says
Random assortment for you: Crime Junkie, The Thing About Pam, Dolly Parton’s America, Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. My personal favorite is a religious podcast called: Abiding Together.
Janet says
Love Abiding Together!!
Courtney says
Hello!
I am ever further behind…for so long I wanted to run with mindless music and not listen to another person talk ?. Now I am interested in podcasts too, but which app do I used to save my favorites and listen to them on the iPhone. I use Bloglovin to read my favorite blogs…what is the podcast equivalent? Told you I am further behind…
Happy Wednesday blessings to all!
Mix and Match Mama says
I feel like you’re my soul sister. Bahahaha!
Rachel says
Apple Podcasts right on your phone and subscribe like you would a blog and they will be added in order to listen

Leann says
Bloglovin
Julie says
22 hours…that story will haunt me for a long time.
Very presidential-so interesting!! They never told us these things in history class. ?
Angela says
Totally didn’t know there was even an app to read blogs!! I just used Safari…LOL
Kate says
If you like true crime and liked dirty John, I highly recommend Cold!
Sarah says
Armchair Expert with Dax Shepherd is very interesting. He uses some bad language but has interviewed quite the gambit of people, so find someone you’re interested in and you will love it!

Kristina B says
Crime Junkie’s podcast is so good and they have one new podcast every Monday.
Up and vanished is also really good.
Stacy says
1.Annie F. Downs “That Sounds Fun” is a good one,
2.The Popcast with Knox and Jamie is a fun take on pop culture and they have an AMAZING episode on pop culture conspiracy theories (Avril Lavigne has really died and the record company found a lookalike?!?).
3.The Bible Binge (also with Knox and Jamie) is where they take the people and stories of the Bible and talk about/cast them with current people. It’s a fun way to learn about the Bible and it’s NOT irreverent. We listen on road trips.
Can’t wait to read everyone’s responses. Always looking for a good podcast!
Stacy says
Crime Junkies, Oprah Master class- there are no new ones but she has some good ones, Brene Brown- Unlocking Us. My relaxing entertaining ones are Armchair experts- loVe Dax Shepard and a new one is Smartless with Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes. Enjoy!
Katie Cameron says
I discovered podcasts a few years ago (after years of my husband suggesting I listen to some!) and it’s amazing to have something to listen to on runs! Nice White Parents, Serial, Armchair Expert and the Dream are all good ones!!
Ali says
Armchair expert and Life is short if you love celeb interviews – so entertaining! Also The Holderness Family for parenting/marriage interesting and funny discussions
Laura says
I use Spotify that I’m already paying for to listen. I find that if you find one you like you can search for that ‘publisher’ to find others. Crime Junkie is the best true crime – a different story every week. Park Predators is also. There are others that tell a story spread over many weeks. Bear Brook, Voices for Justice (long!), Selena, Cold, In the Dark, Down the Hill, Counter Clock, Red Ball & Bardstown are all excellent.
For Christian/spiritual content I like Jamie Ivey’s Happy Hour, Sadie Robertson’s Woah That’s Good, Matthew West’s podcast, The Grove, Pray the Word with David Platt, The Big Boo podcast (hilarious).
Very Presidential is a new one that I’m enjoying also.
I’ll be back to see what everyone else says!
Amanda says
Christian Parenting is an absolute must!! Hope you love it as much as I do.
Jordan says
That Sounds Fun with Annie F. Downs is my absolute FAVORITE – she is so fun and interviews so many different people in the Christian world and every conversation with her is great.
It’s new so there’s only a few episodes out, but Fake Priest is SO interesting. It’s like a crime podcast, but the story is so absurd it’s even more interesting to me.
Kathleen says
If you loved Dirty John…Serial Season 1, S-Town, Dr. Death, and the Drop Out!
Rachel says

-Up and Vanished (again season 1 was the best)

-Binge Mode (loved the seasons on Game of Thrones and Harry Potter)
Also, once I switched to 1.5 speed I could never go back! It lets you get through so much more content!
Kristen Hardison says
My true crime favorites are Crime Junkie and Dateline. For faith I like Annie Downs and Jamie Ivey and Don’t Mom Alone. A random one I like is The Lazy Genius. Also go back because Annie Downs has done a couple of Hallmark Christmas movie episodes! And finally I also love starting a new audiobook on my walks! I feel like I get to more books if I listen to one and also read a different one at bedtime ? Welcome to the podcast club!!

If you want a true-crime podcast that will make you feel all the feels for the victim’s survivors you MUST. LISTEN. TO. Culpable…must.
Repeat after me: Culpable
It is a must listen!
Erin Hill says
My absolute must listen every week is the Popcast. I love them so much I subscribe to their Patreon feed. You will look crazy tho when you’re laughing hysterically alone running or in the car. Ha! Recently I’ve started listening to Pantsuit Politics and I love them so much. Such a kind, rational look at politics. And I haven’t listened to a ton of true-crime, but way back I listened to Serial (season 1) and S-Town and LOVED them.
Abby Conaway says
In recently listened to The Clearing and it was great! Currently listening to Winds of Change and LOVE IT! I also love Big Boo, Bible Binge, Trader Joe’s Podcast, Risen Motherhood, 10 Things to Tell You, Dr, Death, and The Lazy Genuis! Overcast is my favorite app for podcast listening!
Morgan says
Up and Vanished was awesome!
Amber says
LIVING WITH LANDYN WITH LANDYN HUTCHINSON. She’s a mom and wife and is so real and approachable. She’s married to her high school sweet heart who played in the NFL and was recently inducted into the hall of fame. Her podcasts cover tons of topics: parenting, organization, skin care and her latest is a sit down with her father in law who they call Mister, I haven’t listened to it, but can’t wait.
Catherine says
The Shrink Next Door, Dr Death and Gladiator are all based on true stories and fascinating!
Stacey says
The daily, nice White parents, oldie but goodie- missing Richard Simmons, don’t mom alone, the Popcast and for the kiddos: story pirates and wow in the world
Cindi B. says
I love listening to podcasts while in the car or doing tasks around the house. I think you would enjoy The Popcast (Knox and Jamie are so smart and funny), The Big Boo Cast (Sophie and Melanie are a delight) and The Drop Out (the story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos is fascinating).
Rachel says
Another vote for Dr. Death!!! My husband and I listened to it on a road trip and were fascinated/horrified. Especially since it’s about a Dallas-based doctor where we live as well. So eye-opening!
Jenny Behn says
The first season on Serial. It was the first podcast I ever listened to and nothing has lived up to it! It’s so good!
Debi says
Ditto for Serial season 1 – so so good! I also enjoy the This American Life podcasts.
Christine Jandorf says
I loved “Blackout “starring Rami Malek, it’s more like a traditional thriller but the voices and audio is so good you can fully picture everything. The only other podcast I listened to was “Homecoming” which is fictional but centers on a mystery surrounding the return of soldiers to everyday life after being in the Middle East. I believe it was a show on Showtime or HBO but is not just the audio from that show. The audio is different. All the characters have voices you’ll recognize so you can picture the characters. Sorry I’m a little older than you and just as behind the times with podcasts.
Robyn Beasley says
Southern Fried True Crime..all
Crimes that occurred in the south. Erica has the most soothing, soft southern draw and is an excellent story teller. Mom and Murder.. Melissa and Mandy are two best friends that spin true crime stories without a bunch of extra details. Love them both!
Nichole says
Dr. Death, The Orange Tree, Bad Batch, Gladiator – all great True Crime.
Anything produced by Wondery is great.
The Popcast with Knox and Jamie is such a fun listen.
Sorta Awesome – it’s like a weekly chat with your girlfriends, it’s so good.
10 Things To Tell You – Laura Tremaine is a great host and the weekly discussion prompts are so so good
Lydia says

Also! Forgot to mention Armchair Expert is amazing. Celebrity interviews but they also interview subject matter experts on things like psychology, religion, and medicine that I always walk away from having learned something new and fascinating. Oprah’s Super Soul Conversations, of course! Gotta love Mama Oprah! And, The Next Right Thing is a great quick morning listen (10 minutes or so) that really centers you, is calming, and gets my day started on a nice foot. It’s about decision-making and tips/tools to get through seasons on transition, decision fatigue, and general daily life.
Arika says
I don’t know how many of your readers are sports fans, but Steve Kerr and Pete Carroll have a podcast called Flying Coach. It’s fantastic, they talk about coaching, sports, all kinds of stuff.
Amber Walker says
I love podcasts!!! I have a 40 minute (each way) commute to work and I love to listen to them while I drive. My favorite true crime ones are: season 1 of Serial, Crime Junkie, Trace Evidence, True Crime All the Time Unsolved, Park Predators, Counter Clock, and Redball. My favorite non-true crime podcasts are: Outcasts Podcast (about the show Outlander, which you need to watch!!), I Hate Green Beans with Lincee Ray, Showmance: The Glee Recap Edition, and Outlandercast (also about the show Outlander).
Colleen says
I haven’t found many podcasts I enjoy, but I’m gonna check out these comments! Wanted to say- My kids claim to hate podcasts. So the second they start bickering, I put on Big Life Kids podcast. It’s all about adventures that lead to a growth mindset….the kids that “hate” it then quiet down to listen!
Kayla Sugrue says
So many great ones! I love Office Ladies, Bubbly Sesh (where they recap/interview Hallmark Channel movies & stars!), Whine Down with Jana Kramer, and The Morning Toast!
Melissa says
I’ve only started listening to podcasts over the last year but the are the one so like! Dateline, The Big Boo, Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey, That Sounds Fun with Annie F. Downs. I can’t wait to read all the comments and find new ones to listen to!
Beth Cox says
I love Office Ladies…Jenna Fischer who played Pam and Angela Kinsey who played Angela are best friends in real life and break down every episode of the show. I also love the PBS podcast How I Built This. The host interviews people who have started their own business, non-profit, etc. He always ask the question, “Was it luck or determination/hard work that allowed you to succeed”. The answers are really interesting.
Kayla B says
My husband LOVES Crimetown, which it sounds like you would love, too! My favorite podcast by far is Armchair Expert. So many interesting ideas and conversations.
Laura Seldomridge says
What Have You by Rachel Jankovic! Two sisters and authors talk life, faith and cooking. They are super deep thinkers and I always come away feeling like I laughed really hard and thought about something deeply in a way I never have before. Rachel is the author of ‘loving the little years’ and ‘You Who’.
Chrissy says
YES, listen to the Office podcast! Episode 10 just came out and I listened on my run this morning. I think there are a couple more set to be released, so maybe wait a few weeks so you can listen straight through. I learned so much about the making of the show and now I need to go back and rewatch!
Also, Armchair Expert is amazing! Dax really goes deep into his celebrity guests’ pasts and thoughts, it’s not just fluffy gossip.
Stacey says
The Mom Game with Emily Jones and Julie Dobbs (from The Ticket!). Arm Chair Expert with Dax Shepard is awesome! And I’m sure you have already listened to The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey since you have been on with her a few times, but she is amazing too.
Shayna Nelson says
Up and Vanished season 1 (former beauty queen turned beloved high school teacher goes missing, presumed dead, and everyone in her small Georgia town seems to be hiding the truth), Serial season 1 (what started the whole true crime podcast trend- a case from the 90s of a man claiming innocence for the murder of his high school girlfriend and the host investigates both sides of the argument- it’ll have you changing your mind every episode!), and Crime Junkie (highlight episodes to see if you’ll like it: Martha Moxley episode from August 10- you’ll probably like it since it ties in with the Kennedy’s, L.I.S.K episode from April 2018, Killer on the High Bridge from February 2018).
Molly says
My current podcasts are Arm Chair Expert (Dax Shepherd) and Marriage & Martinis. Both are great!
Melanie M. says
I listen to a lot of podcasts. Up and Vanished is great! There are 2 seasons. Also, I love to watch Dateline on TV. They have a podcast. I haven’t listened to it but it is probably good because the show is good.
Laura K says
The Dating Game Killer is really good. It’s about seven hours of stories.
Leslie says
Dr. Death for sure! This story happened right there in Dallas. Serial Killers is really good – gets into the psychology of the killers.
Michelle N says
I love podcasts for walks, washing dishes, folding laundry, cleaning my husband’s law office, when my kids are playing loudly (but having fun)…
I prefer conversational podcasts over story-based. If I want story-based, I’ll just listen to an audiobook (which is how my husband listens to all his fiction books now).
My faves are: The Mom Hour, What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood, The Big Boo Cast, That Sounds Fun with Annie F. Downs, Edit Your Life, Hello Relationships, Didn’t I Just Feed You, The Lazy Genius, What Should I Read Next?… There is so much good stuff out there!
I personally prefer Stitcher over Apple Podcast as a vehicle for episodes, just to give you some options.
Eileen P says
No Such Thing as a Fish. It’s 4 hilarious Brits discussing the 4 (1 each) oddest facts they’ve learned in the last week. Super smart, super funny, and you’ll pick up a lot of random knowledge along the way. Side note – they do cuss and some topics are for adults ears only.
Rachel says
Wondery has some of the best true crime podcasts. Some of my favorites: Dr. Deth, Bad Batch, The Dropout, In the Dark (Season 2), Over My Dead Body (Season 1).
Cara says
Serial was my first podcast and great for true crime!
I love “I Hate Green Beans”! She’s a Texan, Christian, and so funny and relatable! During the season she does bachelor recaps which are great but also covers other pop culture/shows.
Louise says
Literally! with Rob Lowe and love it; Office Ladies; Ear Hustle (podcast from behind the walls at San Quentin); Finding Fred; Missing Richard Simmons; Last Seen (about the Isabella Stuart Gardner heist in Boston)

Emily says
Another one is the new one by Mark-Paul Gosselaar called Zack to the Future. They go through all of the Saved by the Bell episodes.
Johannah M says
Dirty John was my first podcast, too! I was hooked. I listen while I’m driving, making dinner, walking the dog, running–love them! I’ve listened to several of the ones mentioned in the comments, but lately can’t stop with True Crime Brewery. It’s a couple who researches and discusses a different crime for each episode, and their dynamic is great. It’s definitely not for everyone, it’s pretty quirky and they totally remind me of the “Schweddy Balls” skit on Saturday Night Live. But, if you like true crime–give it a whirl!
Amie says
I guess mine are more reality/real life based. I listen to 4 Things Amy with Brown, Whine Down w/ Jana Kramer and her husband, Logically Irrational with Melissa Rycroft and her husband and Juicy Scoop with Heather McDonald.
Deena says
I started listening to podcasts about 2 years ago when my friend got me to try true crime which I thought I wouldn’t like. I was wrong. ? I find I’m also listening to podcasts when I’m doing crafts or chores around the house.
Dr Death because it’s local and eye opening; Moms & Murder (my new favorite – has a touch of humor); Direct Appeal and their current podcast Women & Crime; Man in the Window which is a Wondery podcast about the Golden State Killer (so good and so scary at the same time); Crime Junkies; Some non-crime ones I like are Young, House, Love; At Home with Drew & Linda Scott; Redesigning Life with Sabrina Soto; and Flashback: Histories unintended consequences.
Mindy Amick says
For true crime, listen to Dr. Death. You will likely remember when this was on the news in Dallas! Serial, season 1, I did not want to stop listening to this one!
For something other than true crime, I recently did a book study that has a podcast that goes with it. The book is called, “Get Out of Your Head”, by Jennie Allen. Her podcast is called Made For This and it is season 3. It is an incredible book that I think it great for both women and men! My 23 year old daughter did it and now tells all of her friends and family about it!
Emily Smith says
Deck the Hallmark! These 3 guys started out by reviewing Hallmark Christmas movies (one guy loves them, one likes them, one hates them). They now review all Hallmark movies and interview the actors. It is hilarious! Clean, funny, family friendly.
They have also started a podcast network. Yo Gavel, Gavel cracks me up. I also love History or his story. And Take the Day Off is just a funny way to start your day. You can look up the network (Bramble Jam Podcasts).
Sara says
A weekly one I LOVE is: 10 Things to Tell You
These are ones you can binge:
-Believed (about Larry Nassar/women’s gymnastics; hard to hear, but SO good)
-Your Own Backyard (true crime)
-Down the HIll (true crime and I REALLY think this podcast will help solve it)
-Dolly Parton’s America (so good!)
Anne says

Serial season one was what got me totally hooked on podcasts several years ago. A couple other favs: Popcast, Bible Binge, The Lazy Genius, Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey, How I Built This, Home Team, and a hilarious crime podcasts that recaps the documentaries is True Crime Obsessed (I laugh out loud on my runs/walks when I listen to this)
Adrienne N says
How I Built This – an NPR podcast about how businesses started, from Stacy’s Pita Chips to StitchFix- super interesting and business oriented!
Missing in Alaska- My husband got my listening to this one. Outlines a plane crash in Alaska in the 70s that killed speaker of the house and a senator (I think?), never found the plane, ties to the mob, CIA plot, all that.
Emily says
I love podcasts!!! Here are my top current favorites:
Park Predators, Crime Junkie, The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey(I’m sure you’ve already listened to this one), Stuff You Should Know, The Hope We Hold, Ali On The Run, and Trader Joe’s (inside)

Crime Junkie is the best! The girls that host it are BFFs, and they tell the stories in a very informative way. I love it!
Leiah says
You absolutely need to listen to Bitch Sesh: a real housewives breakdown. I know you love Housewives and they are seriously hilarious!
Julie says
For true crime, the first season of Serial is a must! And OMG, Dirty John. It’s like a train wreck you cannot look away from. There was a great TV show starring “Coach’s wife” from Friday Night Lights (Connie Britton) on Dirty John. MUST SEE! I also love “How I built this” it’s very inspiring. A number of entrepreneurs talk about how they formed their companies (from Peloton, to make up brands, to Wayfair and Milk Bar) and spoiler alert, they all just kind of WING IT. It’s really cool to hear their stories. Enjoy!
Kelli says
We’ve really enjoyed “Fake Doctors, Real Friends” with Zach Braff and Donald Faison. It’s about the show Scrubs but also their friendship. A lot of the cast and creators and on different episodes as well. Very lighthearted and fun!
Emily says
Culpable is a great podcast about a case in Mississippi. It’s an investigative true crime podcast hosted by Dennis Cooper that covers the 2014 death of 21-year-old Christian Andreacchio. It has many episodes but I’ve listened twice and now follow the case. I went around with headphones in my ears for days to finish it.
Debbra Weber says
Good luck with them going back to in-school learning! We have been going strong with in-school learning and all sports since the second week of August and no reported cases. #GRATEFUL!!

Wow! So many comments already! I think you’d love Serial. Although it’s not my genre, my husband loves it. The same company recently started releasing Nice White Parents. I’m only a couple episodes in, but it’s super intriguing and well done!
My absolute favorite Christian mom podcast is Don’t Mom Alone. I’ve listened to others, but this one is the only one that’s stuck!
Others I’m not sure if you’d like but I think are awesome:
Mousetalgia – BEST Disney podcast around. History and park happenings.
Can’t Wait For Christmas – for all those Christmas fans! Humorous! Comes out on the 25th each month.

I feel like I was late to the podcast party, too, but now I’m hooked. As others said Armchair Expert is one of my favorites. I like that I get suggestions for other podcasts and non-fiction books to read from their conversations. I want to add one. If you need something just to play and not have to really think about, listen to Mike Rowe’s podcast called “The Way I Heard It”. Each episode is about 10 or 15 minutes long. He tells very interesting true stories about people. Here is the description:
“All good stories have a twist, and all great storytellers are just a little twisted. Join Mike Rowe for a different take on the people and events that you thought you knew — from pop-culture to politics from Hollywood to History… The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe — short mysteries for the curious mind with a short attention span.”
Beth Wilson says
Your Own Backyard was amazing.
S-Town is good also.
The Popcast
Bible Binge

Not sure if it’s already been mentioned but Cold is excellent!

You should try the podcast about the Golden State Killer in California. They just caught him recently and he agreed to plead guilty and was sentenced a few weeks ago. The podcast is called The Man in the Window by the LA Times.

I prefer crime ones as well and I listen to the Dateline podcast (the audio of the episodes). I really liked Something About Pam too! Serial, s-town, An American Nightmare (if you listen to this one let’s do a discussion post! I am SO into that). I just prefer crime ones because they’re easier to listen to but I also listen to business ones for my business specifically.

Megan Reed says
here are a couple that haven’t been mentioned: Someone Knows Something (cold cases in Canada and US, done by Canada Broadcast Comp, really interesting and the narrators voice is easy to listen to) Hunting Warhead (abt taking the largest child porn site off the dark web, FASCINATING) Uncover (different each season, done by CBC, Canada knows how to do a podcast) The Shrink Next Door (a wealthy guy gets taken advantage of by his shrink in NYC) American History Tellers (each season is a dramatization of a non fiction book about Amer History, very good) Our Fake History-(hundreds of shows about well known myths or historical stories broken down into truth/myth and why) Accused (journalist from Cincinnati covers cold cases from the area, season 3 is crazy! its about a guy that “committed suicide” by jumping in a vat of 2000 degree salt slurry at a now defunct nuclear plant. oh and the hole he dove into to commit suicide would have only fit a small child)
Kristin says
I love true crime podcasts! I also started with “Dirty John” and then listened to the first season of “Serial” which was so good! I also really liked “Monster: DC Sniper”. It told the story of the DC Sniper case and was fascinating.
April Lin says
Audiobooks are also awesome! Last longer too! Ever since having a baby, I made the switch and going for walks and runs, I can listen to audiobooks and it can last me like two weeks! There’s a lot of good crime or psychological thrillers! Currently working on The Guest List. Try it if you are not finding any good podcasts. I’d recommend audiobooks on your iBook app.
Meg says
I’ve listened to SO many and my favorites are: Up and Vanished (Season 1…I didn’t like Season 2), To Live and Die in LA, Culpable, and Hell and Gone. So many good ones!

Definitely in line with the true crime and the same vibe as Dirty John, and it sucks you right in!
Rebecca says
Just discovered The Rewatchables which is a deep dive about the casting and making of popular movies. Pretty sure your faves are all in there!!
I also love Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness (from Queer Eye)- he does incredibly interesting and relevant topics with an expert from the field. And Unlocking Us with Brene Brown is always great (but a bit deeper). My kids love the Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls podcast too- the episodes are quick and I love how they get influential women to share the stories about even more inspiring women!
Hilary Rudd says
Ahh, I love a great podcast! I listen to the NPR Podcast “Up First” each morning for a daily dose of what’s going on. Other than that, here are my favorites for working out, a road trip, commuting, etc.

-The Dropout – follows the downfall of the woman in her 20s/30s who created Theranos, a company once valued over $9B…sooo good!

-Bon Appetit Podcast – informative and just easy listening
-Goop Podcast – similar to BA, easy to listen to and some really interesting information
True Crime favorites:
Up and Vanished, In the Dark, Generation Why, Serial (Season 1)
Random but enjoyable:
Making Oprah, ESPN 30 for 30 (loved the one on Tonya Harding!), Missing Richard Simmons, Jeffrey Epstein Truth and Lies

I too am late to jump on the podcast train. I just started listening about a year ago so I am in that stage of being super pumped up anytime anyone wants to talk podcasts! I used to only follow a couple which was nice because I could keep up on all of them, but now I have branched out and can’t keep up! Here is my list:
Christian Mom
Risen Motherhood-if you haven’t listened to them, stop what you are doing and turn it on! They are doing a “best of” series this fall which will be a great time to pick them up and hear their best episodes. They also wrote a book about a year ago, it’s like a Bible for motherhood. I could not make it through motherhood without them!
Don’t Mom Alone- she has guests ever week who are so inspiring and helpful. I really love this one!
Business oriented
Entreleadership from Dave Ramsey’s team
Path for Growth- Alex Judd is the creator. He was the host of entreleadership last year and just started his own company over the summer. He is so energetic and his episodes are 25 minutes or less which I love!
Fun
Office Ladies- Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey go through each episode to break down The Office. Is this “the office” one you were referring to? We watch The Office every night before bed so it’s so fun to hear the inside scoop, and I love to hear how much everyone truly got along. They were such a great team!
An Oral History of the Office- this one is by Brian Baumgartner who played Kevin. I think this one is only on Spotify. This one goes way more in depth into things like how the show was created. Much more inside scoop, and I just eat it up!
The Lazy Genius Podcast- this lady is great! I just found this one. She has principles to follow to kind of keep your life in order, be a genius about what you need to be and to be lazy about what doesn’t matter. Her latest episode was all about your list making personality; I totally thought of you, Shay, as I listened to this one!
The Gift of Forgiveness- Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt interviews people on their other through forgiveness. Very inspiring, much more serious than the others I listed. She wrote a book by the same title so some of the interviews came from the book and now she is expanding with more interviews of her famous friends and inspiring everyday people.
Ok that’s probably enough for now. Can’t wait to see the suggestions!!
Emily H. says
I listen to podcasts all day long and my favorites are: The Popcast with Knox and Jamie, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Armchair Expert with Dax Shepherd, This American Life, Revisionist History, Noble Blood, SmartLess, and Headlong: Missing Richard Simmons. The Office Ladies podcast is SO much fun! Would definitely listen if you’ve watched the show. You may also like What Should I Read Next with Anne Bogel! She has different guests and they chat and then tell her three books they loved, one they didn’t and she gives them book recommendations!

I love Crime Junkie and enjoyed Up and Vanished. Another one that my entire family likes is called Imagined Life. Basically each episode tells the story of someone famous in a 2nd person POV and the entire time you are trying to guess who it is. Some of them aren’t kid-friendly, but they tell you that at the beginning so you can change it if kids are listening. It’s fun to make guesses and see if you are right.

A great true crime podcast is “Cold,” it’s about Susan Powell here in Utah, pretty relevant since her parents were just awarded like a bazillion dollars from Washington State and Child Protective Services, I believe the podcast series won an award as well, It is very well done. Also, I believe it is is on cassette tape…hahaha, just kidding, although, I secretly wish it was… 🙂

Up and Vanished season 1 is what started my obsession with podcasts. I was hooked! Then I found Crime Junkie (my all time favorite)!! Each episode is a different case and they’re relatively short – perfect for a work out. Other great ones are Dr. Death, The Thing About Pam, and Down the Hill: the Delphi murders
Lynne says
I love ‘True Crime Obsessed.’ Also, ‘You Must Remember This’ is Hollywood true crime, lots of it old Hollywood – she did a whole season on ‘dead blondes’ (which sounds terrible) but was really compelling – think everyone from Jane Mansfield to Dorothy Stratten and Grace Kelly. I second all the ‘Serial’ recs and I saw some votes for ‘Nice White Parents’ – really, really good.

Oh wow. SUCH great recommendations. I LOVE podcasts and my listening has really suffered this pandemic because I so rarely drive anywhere by myself anymore, which is often when I listen. I tried to get into The Popcast and I just couldn’t. Maybe I need to give it another try given all the high praise it’s getting in your comments. Nice White Parents, The Drop Out (Elizabeth Holmes/Theranos story) and Finding Fred (documentary style about the amazing Fred Rogers) are my faves of the past year. Always love The Happy Hour, and now Jamie Ivey is also on the Relevant Podcast, which is great, too!
Bethany says

Those are some of my favorites!

Two others to add: Your Favorite Things with Wells Adams and Brandi Cyrus (covers pop culture and often Bachelor news)

I am late to the party on podcasts, too! But I loved Bardstown – small city in Kentucky has five unsolved murders (one is a missing persons case presumed dead) in a four year span. Super interesting and there has been some movement on the cases recently so they’ve added some new episodes. I’m from about an hour away and I always say, “I just want to know what happened in Bardstown before I die!”
I also like “Missing in Alaska” – an airplane went missing in 1972 in Alaska with two Congressmen. True story and very enteraining.
I am also shocked that I am so invested in this one but I love the Unashamed Podcast with the Duck Dynasty guys!
