Happy Tuesday, friends! As you know, I love me a Sloppy Joe recipe!!
My family probably makes some version of the SLOPPY JOE at least once a week. From traditional to Taco, our Sloppy Joe Bowls, Stuffed Spuds, Pot Pies and so many more (they’re all HERE!), we love a Joe!
Just last week, I made us these MAPLE BOURBON SLOPPY JOES on one of our busy school nights because they’re simple, they’re flavorful, they have a bit of maple in them, and my family devours them. Bonus, sometimes, I will make the “joe” earlier in the day before the “after school crazies” and keep the meat warm in the slow cooker until later when we’re ready to eat. So, this isn’t technically a slow cooker supper…but you can totally use your slow cooker to assist you on those busy nights.
I made a video last week while I was whipping these up (I’ll post it in my Stories later today), but my family uses four pounds of ground beef now for the extra protein. This recipe is really, really easy to double if you’re feeding a crowd or if you’re looking for extra protein or leftovers. You’ll see that when you watch the video.
Maple is such a fall flavor…and sloppy joes are totally “back to school” food, so this is the perfect combo for your busy weeknight! Enjoy! xx
PrintMaple Bourbon Sloppy Joes
- Prep Time: 18 minutes
- Total Time: 18 minutes
- Yield: 4 1x
Description
The perfect combinations of maple and bourbon simmer together to create a delicious take on the Sloppy Joe!
Ingredients
- 1 pound of ground beef
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)
- salt and pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 (8 oz) cans tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tablespoons maple syrup (use a good quality and not the imitation)
- 1 shot of your favorite bourbon (we use Maker’s Mark)
- burger buns
- chopped red onions to garnish
Instructions
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, brown up your ground beef in a drizzle of EVOO until it’s crumbly. Stir in a nice pinch of both salt and pepper along with your garlic powder.
- Next, stir in your tomato sauce, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce and maple syrup. Bring everything up to a simmer and then stir in your bourbon. Reduce your heat to medium and allow your Sloppy Joes to simmer together about 10 minutes.
- When you’re ready to eat, add a burger bun to each plate along with a scoop of Sloppy Joe mixture and then garnish with a bit of chopped red onions.
- You can eat these open-faced or with a top bun like a sandwich.
Notes
We are a gluten-free house, so we sub our burger buns for ones that are g-free. Our favorite brand is Trader Joe’s Gluten-Free Buns (when they’re available!).

I currently have your traditional sloppy joe recipe in my slow cooker since it’s a double sport night in our house…you’ve inspired me to add a splash of maple and see what happens!
Jeanette says
Oooooh, this sounds delicious! My partner is a huge maple lover, so I definitely have to make this.

You do mean a literal shot of bourbon not just a splash, right? Sorry if this is a dumb question!
Mix and Match Mama says
Great question and yes, I mean a literal shot, but you can totally use less if you prefer.
