I love, love, love a Monte Cristo sandwich! A fried sandwich of ham and cheese, sprinkled with powdered sugar and dipped in either jam or syrup, what’s not to love?!?!
That being said…it’s not the easiest thing to make or healthiest thing to eat…so, the other day, I made my own lightened up version using microwaved waffles. Kensington thought it was awesome that I made her a sandwich sprinkled with powdered sugar and a side of jam…easy and fun, the perfect lunch.
And just so you know…I always buy this brand of waffle…
…but you can feel free to use whichever one you love. The little bit of sweetness is perfection with this sandwich!
Shopping List
2 frozen waffles (keep them frozen if you’re using a panini press)
Good quality ham (I used Boar’s Head)
Good quality Swiss cheese (I used Boar’s Head)
A sprinkle of powdered sugar
Strawberry Jam and/or Syrup for dipping
Preheat your panini press or large skillet.
Using the frozen waffles as your sandwich bread, build your sandwich with ham and Swiss. Place your sandwich under your hot panini press on in your hot skillet (if using your skillet, you will need to first microwave your waffles and then press down on the sandwich with a spatula like you are making a grilled cheese and flip it once you think it’s browned on one side…about 4 minutes per side).
After you remove your sandwich, sprinkle it with a little powdered sugar and serve with a side of jam or syrup.
This was such a fun way to eat lunch! And if you’re taking it on the go, then just microwave your waffles first, then layer your ham and Swiss and bring along a side of syrup or jam. This would be a fun way for your kiddos to eat lunch at school…a waffle sandwich :).

What a great idea to use waffles for bread, I have never thought of that. I love that brand as well, have got to try this one. xo Morgan

We love a waffle sandwich in our house, but have never ventured to lunch with them. It's usually peanut butter, jam, and banana wedged between 2 sweet waffles. But I love the Monte Cristo idea! Sweet and savory is the best.

I know this is a LATE comment on this post but I was just searching your blog for panini recipes. Making these after church tomorrow. I don't have a panini press so I use my George Foreman grill. Works perfectly!
