Every year at the end of August, I decorate our house for fall. This is one of my family’s very favorite traditions :).
Last year, I did a Decorating for Fall Shade of Shay where I shared my thoughts on the subject and they still apply this year, so here you go…
1. I try and put out mostly fall decorations and not Halloween. I feel like this way, I’m getting to celebrate the entire season instead of just one holiday. That being said, you will see some Halloween specific decorations in my house…but I really try and get mostly fall things.
2. I leave everything up past October 31. If I’m going to decorate for Christmas mid-November, then I don’t want to take down everything on November 1 and wait a few weeks until I put my Christmas stuff out. Jack-o-lanterns make us happy in November too, so I don’t mind leaving them out.
3. I don’t host Thanksgiving at my house, so it doesn’t matter to me that on Thanksgiving Day, I have Christmas decor up and not Thanksgiving decor (no one is coming over to see it). That being said, I am very thankful on Thanksgiving for my Christmas stuff being up and my house twinkling, so I think it’s perfectly acceptable to have a tree up on Turkey Day…again, to each her own…this is just how I roll.
4. I have collected fall decorations for 10 years now…I know some of you are going to ask, but I do not remember where I purchased every specific item. If I mention where it was purchased below, then it’s a recent enough purchase where you could run out and get one too. If I don’t mention it below, then I probably got it at Hobby Lobby, TJ Maxx, a little boutique, Pier One or some place like that. I’m so sorry that I can’t be more specific!!
Last year, I decorated the rent house (which was fun) but this year, decorating our new house was even more fun :).
Come on inside!
We always put these stone pumpkins on our porch and then when we’re having guests over or on Halloween night, we burn candles in them and they glow. They’re from Sandstone Garden in Joplin, MO.
Coming in our back door, we have a happy mat :).
In my laundry room/office area, I have a fall candle going, fall soap and a few little decorations. Erika watched my kids one night a few years ago and they made that cute little fall canvas…I just love it :).
On my desk, I keep seasonal cookbooks and my favorite hand lotion. It’s a happy place to work!
In our kitchen, people have already been into the candy corn bowl :). I’ve told them repeatedly that candy corn is not a vegetable. And as you can see…I adore little seasonal cookbooks.
Scattered throughout the house are my pumpkins. Pumpkins just make me happy. So, so, so happy!
This is on the counter top in my pantry. I personally think pumpkin spice makes everything nice!
And then back out in the kitchen are a few other little details. I always use Williams-Sonoma soaps in the kitchen because they smell fantastic and don’t dry out my hands. This Spiced Chestnut scent is my very favorite. Every single time I smell it…I think about living in Michigan. The first time I bought this soap, was at the Williams-Sonoma in Rochester Hills…and it always brings back great memories :).
My kids’ very favorite decoration is my spooky house that lights up and plays scary music. They LOVE this thing!! Boo to YOU!
I keep this jar on my kitchen counter and fill it with seasonal items…right now, it’s full of sparkly pumpkins.
I love my subway art!! This year instead of hanging it, I propped it up in the corner where I can see it from both the kitchen and the family room.
Perfect for my latte time 🙂
We have two mantles inside the house and I put leaves and pumpkins on both of them.
Here is the second mantle…more leaves and pumpkins :).
I bought this guy at Hobby Lobby recently.
And then this is a back door leading out.
Decorating for fall is totally a Shade of Shay. Every year, I look forward to pulling out my pumpkins and making my house cozy. It might still be hot outside but in our hearts, it’s fall.
Thanks for stopping by! If you were here with me now, we’d be drinking homemade lattes curled up on my couch with a piece of Apple Butterscotch Bundt Cake and the house would smell like a pumpkin pie candle…and it would be fabulous :).
Love you friends!
And what’s the perfect thing to go with our house today?
Yummy!!

Winter in MT last year was so brutally long that for the first time in my life, I am dreading fall. I am fall obsessed, it is my absolute favorite season…but not this year. I think it's because I know…when the temp changes…there is no reprieve until May! Your fall post is helping me reclaim my love for all things Autumn! I'm not there yet, but your beautiful post has helped! Thank you for sharing!

I'm from mt too!!! I love fall and thanksgiving is my favorite holiday , but the first hint of cool weather makes me think snow is coming soon 🙂

It all looks so great! Yay for fall!!!

The house looks absolutely beautiful. I too decorate for fall more than halloween and I begin Christmas decorations in early November so I'm all done before Thanksgiving. It gets so dark early that time of year and nothing beats time in the living room with just the holiday lights on…..have a beautiful day
Tab & Erika says
Your house looks GREAT!!! How funny you still have that leaf canvas. I have NO CLUE where mine is!! Pretty sure it didn't make the move! Think your stone pumpkins out front are my very favorite!!!

I don't own one pumpkin. Not even one. I have a fall wreath (that I love), but that is it. I NEED SOME PUMPKINS ASAP!!! 🙂

Love all your decorations! Fall is my favorite season, too, and I like to decorate my house towards the end of August. My husband and friends think I'm crazy because it's still summer in their eyes. Glad to see someone else who loves fall as much as I do 🙂

I love that you lived in the Detroit area! I had no idea! If I may ask- when and what were you doing here(I live in the 'burbs of Detroit) and what took you back to Texas?
Kirstin says
I love all the fall decor – it looks lovely! I wonder if you could do a post sometime on how you pack/store your seasonal decorations? I love to see lots of seasonal decor, but I am never sure how best to store it all so it stays looking nice and doesn't take a ton of time to put away. You seem like such an efficient person; I'm certain you have wisdom on this subject!
Leigh says
I am totally in love with those stone pumpkins. I love fall but my allergies make it hard on me the beginning of September seeing how all 4 members of my house are currently in throws of allergy madness. Every time I see that wood door I want one. Maybe I need new doors. Mine aren't that pretty.
Heather Forcey says
Your home looks beautiful! I put out my fall decorations this past weekend and it makes me happy when I walk through the house! Who cares if is 98 degrees outside? And I'm enjoying pumpkin spice Scentsy wax in my classroom! Yum!

I hang my wreathes with a nail and wire. I just put a nail in the door and hang wire off of it and around the top of my wreath. And Andrew used to work in Detroit, so we lived there the first year we were married. We lived in Dearborn :). I am from Dallas, so that's what brought us back.
Patty says
I love your decorations. Your home is beautiful and fall is my favorite time of the year. I decorated my home a week ago with my fall decorations. They make me happy. 🙂

I LOVE your decorations. They really festive!!! I was wondering what type of hardwood flooring do you have on your floors? I like the dark color and wanted to do something like that it our living room.
Thanks,
Laura 🙂

I adore your blog. But this is really just a post of your fall decor. Not necessarily your house decorated. It's just close-up of each decor item. Right?? Just curious as to why there aren't pix of decorated ROOMs, know what I mean??
kelly says
Your house is spectacular. Very kind of you to share pics of your beautiful home! Great fireplace! Love love love your wooden door with the wreath!!!
Kristen Gerdel says
Love your decorations. I may need to make a trip to Hobby Lobby. That pumpkin guy is calling my name.
Mix and Match Mama says
Hmmm…I guess if I backed off and took pics of the entire room, then you wouldn't be able to see the decorations very well. If I took a wide pic of my kitchen, you would mostly see kitchen…and that doesn't make much sense (since you can see my entire kitchen in my kitchen post).

I love your flooring!
Can you please comment on your flooring choice? Is the hardwood the same throughout the house?
Thanks

Looks great Shay! Such cute decorations! I just wish you would have taken the photos from a distance so we could see the entire view of each room. Are you ever going to do that?
Anna says
What a cozy, welcoming home! Big question though: what's the story about the painting of the dog in a military uniform above your subway art sign? Too cute!

Love your blog Shay. Just curious…are you ever going to show us full views of each room in your house? You have shown us a few, but I would love to see all of it. I get such great ideas from you. Would love to see a full view of each room! I was sure hoping that is what you were going to show us today with your fall decorations. Loved the close-up shots, but would have also loved to have seen full views of each room. Know what I mean? Thanks. Have a great day!

LOVE all of your decorations!! And your fireplace mantels are gorgeous! I agree 110% that it is perfectly fine to have your Christmas tree out and twinkling on Thanksgiving day, if not before! 🙂 Thanks for sharing your fall decor with us!

Love. love. love the fall decor!! I am going to get mine out this weekend. I had 2 questions for you that I am hoping you can answer for me – 1. Where do you get all the little stands that you have your candles from bath and body works on? and 2. In the picture of your second fireplace – where did you find the fireplace screen? I have been looking for over a year to find one that is just that type. thank you so much for sharing your home – its beautiful!!

Oh a fall decor kindred spirit! Everyone always laughs that I have my house fully decked out in pumpkins, leaves and mums by September 1st! I live in Shreveport and it is just as HOT here as it is in Dallas but it does not matter to me! Just picked up a new pumpkin scented candle from a little boutique here that I love! It's from Illume and the scent is Heirloom Pumpkin! It adds the perfect touch of fall even though it still feels like summer. Thanks for sharing your decor with us 🙂
