I adored How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are!! This book is most definitely not for everyone. This book is for those who adore and obsess over the French, who love their culture, attitude, food and way of life…it’s totally fabulous if you totally love the French.
There you have it! I’m on book # 6 right now but won’t be finished before the end of the month…come back in November to see what else I’ve been reading :).
One last (very random) note…I saw that these Sam Edelman moto boots were 50% off right now, so I ordered a brown pair. I thought they were really different looking from all of the other booties and wedges I wear (plus, the reviews were fabulous!!). If you’re looking for a new boot at a huge discount, you can find them here (also in black and grey).

Thanks for the book reviews. Sometimes I need ideas on what to read and I don't like to aimlessly pick up a book. I like to know of someone who has enjoyed it or recommended it. So thanks!

I'm so glad to hear you say that about Bernadette! I'm reading it right now for
my book club and having a hard time finishing because of the very reasons you said! But everyone else is loving it! So glad I'm not alone. Also The Kitchen House is one of my faves! Great read! Thanks for the other recommendations as well!:)

I couldn't get into Where'd You Go, Bernadette book, either. I couldn't even force myself to finish reading it. Just didn't like the style of writing.
Erika Slaughter says
I can't wait to start The Power of a Woman's Words!!!

I liked Bernadette, but didn't love it. I did, however, love both The Kitchen House and The Best Yes! Over the past year or so, I've gotten so much better about saying no, and this book just confirmed that for me. I want to copy down all those good quotes and hand them out to friends!
Sheaffer {Pinterest Told Me To} says
This post almost makes me want to read. Almost. 😉 I do think you've convinced me to get Power of a Woman's Words. Well done.

I tried to read Where'd You Go Bernadette this summer too. Ummmm…not a huge fan. On the other hand, The Kitchen House is on my to-read list, so glad to know you liked it!

This is a great post. Are they all self help books (I use the term loosely) or are some novels? For instance, The Kitchen House? On another note, those boots are really cute and different!

I am going to read the power of a woman's words next! What great info about all of those books!! Xo

Love the book reviews….I can't wait to read the Power of a Woman's Words!

I enjoyed Bernadette, but I totally understand what you mean about slow-moving! I'm currently reading The Vacationers by Emma Straub, and I really like it. Juicy plot and a light page-turning read. Same sort of sarcastic tone, but funnier in my opinion! However, I'm only about halfway through so we'll see how it ends up.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! I didn't care for "Where'd you go Bernadette" either!! And I thought I was the only person on the planet who couldn't finish it. Did not keep my attention at all. Which made me sad because everyone I know raved about it!!! :/
Jill says
I hated Where did you go Bernadette too, loved the Kitchen house and now am dying to read your other books, esp how to be a Parisian. I just finished "The Paris Architect" which I could not put down, and also "before I go to sleep"

I read The Kitchen House years ago and loved it! One of my favorite books. So glad you enjoyed it!

I haven't read any of these, but man you were productive this month!
Love those boots! They are so chunky and remind me of how trendy chunky boots were in the 90's!

Love the honest book reviews! I for sure want to read the last two.

Thanks for the reviews! We just finished our book club read of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks which I didn't think I would like, but ended up loving.
We need a new recommendation for next month so one of these could be it!

Love the book reviews – I definitely want to try The Kitchen House and The Power of a Woman's Words! Have you read Liberated Through Submission by PB Wilson? It is REALLY good! You've probably read it. If not, I recommend it!

Shay, can you tell us where you bought the grey booties you were wearing in your 33 post?

I would love to know, too!

Thanks for the book reviews! Always looking for something new to read. I've also heard mixed reviews about Where'd You Go, Bernadette- I guess it's one of those books that you either love or hate.
Just curious- have you read any adoption books to prepare for Ashby's homecoming?

I may need to to pick up "The Best Yes"…I'm the total opposite of you, I have so much trouble saying no! 🙁
inesebokisa says
Aww, it is interesting to hear that someone doesn't like Bernadette, because when I got it, I didn't know any feedback and felt in love straight away. Fabulous writing style, rich language and an intrigue. I really loved this book and happy that it found me.:)
Jeanie says
Loved The Kitchen House. I just finished South of Broad by Pat Conroy. It's not a new book, but boy, was it good!
Ashley @ Our Happily Ever Afters says
Oh there's so much I want to say! 🙂
You need to read the book "Bringing Up Bebe – One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom in French Parenting." I absolutely loved it and was fascinated by it. She compares the differences culturally of how Americans and the French parent, and there were times when I wasn't sure where I agreed. You'll love it.
After DotMom, I've been listening to the all of the breakout sessions through audio, and I listened to Jennie Allen's "Dream" last night – which I know you went to. It spoke to me big time, and I made a list of how my hurts can dictate what I give to the world. I realized I want to VERBALLY speak love and value and affirmation to people as much as I can. So I can't wait to read The Power of a Woman's Words!
I'm doing "The Best Yes" study on my own and it's amazing. I have gotten better and better at saying no, so this was just the encouragement I needed.
Sorry for the novel, but I loved this post! 😉 xoxo

I JUST read a review on the book, "Bringing Up Bebe" and wondered if it was worth the read… with your commentary on it, I am now putting it on my "must read" list! Thanks

As an FYI to those interested in preparing for adoption… Before a couple adopts a child, they are required to take classes that give them plenty of info on adoption preparation and oftentimes there's a lot of interaction with other couples who are adopting from the same country as you are which translates into a fair amount "information-sharing". Also, don't discount the personal human element in raising children- which is that we are all individuals and we all raise our kids in our own fashion so some things aren't necessarily "taught" to us. Sometimes we go by our mothering instinct and cater ourselves to each child's unique needs whether they're adopted or biologically born. Hope this was helpful. (I'm full of all kinds of advice today) haha

Thank you so much for sharing the book reviews! I LOVE to read and worry a lot that I will someday run out of new books to read, I know, like I need one more thing to worry about!
Keep the posts coming! I just found your blog about a month ago, love it, love your family, you are so very gifted in your words!

I love the look of those moto boots, so I got myself to Nordstrom just as quick as I could. Imagine how sad I was when the heel was way too wide for my narrow foot! There was just no way to make it work. I bought my 2 yr old some Uggs to make myself feel better, and darn if that didn't help!

I have NEVER not finished a book, but couldn't even force myself to finish Bernadette and frankly didn't even care where she had gone…lol…people raved about the book and I just don't get it. I just started The Orphan Train.

i felt the same way about where'd you go, bernadette. i had so many friends that raved about it and recommended it. maybe my expectations were just too high, but i did not love it. honestly, i didn't really care where she went. 😉

I didn't care for Bernadette either! I stopped pretty close to the beginning. It's come to a point in my life that if a book doesn't catch me a few chapters in, it's time for it to go back to the library. I used to stick it out. No more.
