The very first Shade of Shay I did almost two years ago was my favorite makeup products (because I really love beauty and makeup products!). Lately, there hasn’t been a day go by when someone hasn’t emailed me and asked me to refresh that post or do it again…so, for fun, I’m doing a post on a few of my favorite beauty products this week and then I’ll update my favorite makeup products after that. I still love all of my original picks but thanks to many of your suggestions over the last two years, I’ve added a few more to my list.
Here you go (my 88th Shade of Shay)…my 9 Favorite Beauty Products…
1. Dry Bar’s Triple Sec: So, last fall, I read in a magazine that Dry Bar made this incredible dry shampoo that doubles as a texturizer. When it was time for me to buy another bottle of dry shampoo, I stopped by my local Dry Bar and picked up a bottle (also available online here) and it is my favorite! Not only does it smell insanely good, but it doesn’t leave that nasty residue in my hair. I love, love, love this stuff!
2. OPI Polish: I am very partial to OPI and Essie polishes (I went on a Butter London kick for a while but I’m off them now…too pricey for too little results). My fingers and toes are always polished…my fingers are always something different but my toes are always, always, always OPI’s Mod About You. It’s the perfect pale pink that pops on your toes while looking clean and simple at the same time.
3. Rose Salve: I read about Rose Salve in a magazine (I learn such valuable things, right?!) years ago. I use this on my lips (many times throughout the day and especially before going to bed at night), I use this on my cuticles before painting my nails (and anytime they feel dry), I use it on my nose if it’s raw from blowing (thank you allergies)…I use it all the time. Love it :). You can find it anywhere (drug stores, Bath and Body Works, etc) but I typically throw one in my “cart” when I’m running low and need to order something else from Nordstrom.
4. Clarisonic: The Clarisonic will change your skin. Period. End of story. I love it. Everyone I know who has one loves it. It’s just perfection. I use mine every night before bed. I use the Clarisonic Mia.
5. Moroccanoil: Speaking of things that I love…Moroccanoil. I should be a spokesperson for this brand. I should be the face of this product My picture should be on the bottle…I love it that much. I have been using Moroccanoil for years (shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, curling mousse and oil) and it never lets me down. My hair is thick, very wavy and can be dry if I’m not taking care of it…and this stuff tames it. I add the oil to my hair every morning, after the gym and/or when I need to freshen it a bit. In this pic, I’m using the “light” bottle because they were sold out of the original when I went to buy some more and it works equally as well. I buy mine at a local salon but Amazon sells it too.
6. The Wet Brush: Next time you’re at Target, grab a Wet Brush. I have a regular sized one but the girls have a mini (pictured). This brush easily goes through wet and tangly hair without much effort. Kensington couldn’t live without it :).
7. Dr. Dennis Gross Glow Pads: If you’ve read my blog for any length of time, you know I love these Glow Pads for my face. I swipe one on about once a week for a nice little glowy tan. Since I try and avoid sun exposure (especially to my face!), these are a must for me. Seriously…you will swoon. Once box has 20 pads in it. I love these pads!
8. OPI Wipe-Out: I found these on Amazon. I was looking for a fingernail polish remover pad to take on trips because polish remover is the worst thing to pack (I feel like it always leaks!). One of these little pads can remove the polish from all 10 fingers (that includes my base and top coats). Easy peazy!
9. Crest White Strips: I have a love/hate relationship with White Strips. For a while, I switched to a gel that didn’t make my teeth quite as sensitive but the results just weren’t as good as White Strips. I’ve learned that if I use them every 3 days instead of every day, they make my teeth less sensitive. I drink too much coffee and tea not to use them…sigh. They work.
So, what are your must have products??? You guys share the best beauty secrets and products! Please share in the comments below! I love trying new things, so please give me some ideas and I’ll try.
Next Shade will be an updated makeup list :).
On the foodie blog today…
You’re going to want to make this :).

Thanks for sharing these! I've always been hesitant to use the white strips. Do your teeth become more prone to color if you stop using it after awhile?
Mix and Match Mama says
I don't!! 🙂
Jola Mochoge says
Have you ever tried oil pulling? I just learned about it from a friend. Apparently it really whitens teeth. I have yet to try it. Trying to grip the idea of oil swishing in my mouth for 20 minutes! Ugh!
Narci says
Ooh! I am going to order that dry shampoo now! Great tips, friend! Xoxo

Love, Love, Love my Rodan + Fields Lip Serium and MicroDerm Paste. The Lip Serium makes my lips so soft and plump and the MicroDerm paste makes my skin feel amazing. The Reverse Regimen has also changed my skin!! I now love the skin I'm in!!!

Is the Moroccan Oil messy? I have been using coconut oil and it gets on my clothes and does not wash out. Thanks for the info!

Love my Clarisonic! Everyone needs one!!! 🙂 I used to use Crest Whitestrips, and then I had to have gum graft surgery. The doctor said the recessing of my gums could have been from the Whitestrips, so I'm hesitant to use again! Any suggestions for any other whitening products?!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh goodness! It's not messy at all! I only use about a quarter-sized amount and it's not messy at all!
Megan says
Great list!! I absolutely love my clarisonic! Best purchase! Next time you are in Target pick up some Boots No. 7 makeup removers! They are awesome!!! actually anything in that line is great!
Tara G. says
This will sound completely bizarre, but Google using charcoal as a teeth whitener.

Hi Shay! I'm a hair stylist from Canada, and you should always be using the light for mila from Moroccan oil! The only difference in the light is that is doesn't have that dark, amber colour to it. If used on blonde hair often enough, it can start to very slightly deposit colour and change the tone of your blonde 🙂 Love your blog, and your sweet family!!
CFlannery says
I'm a hair stylist as well and have also been told that blondes should be using the light one 🙂
Lindsay Unitas says
LOVE Moroccan Oil!
Erika Slaughter says
I love discussing stuff like this!! Um…those little nail polish remover packs are genius! I've heard fabulous things about Dry Bar's spray too. And you know I'm a fan of the Whitestrips!
Leigh says
Love this list! I need a dry shampoo that can take the oil out of my oily hair. So far none can live up to that task. I'm going to order some of that Dry Bar dry shampoo and give that a go. I love beauty and makeup so I get excited to see posts like these!!!

On one of your Shade's of Shay, you made mention how you have a perfectly well kept and organized car. And you have kids! Can you do a Shade of Shay on your system for keeping your car neat and organized and any tricks you may have for that? I have kids and can't seem to keep it ship shape…any organizational tips you have would be GREATLY appreciated, especially as we enter road trip season. (spring/summer) 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Haha! The key is being married to Andrew Shull. He is incredibly neat and loves a clean car. We don't eat in the car and every single time we get out, we take everything with us. It's always emptied of bottles, toys and trash.
Anonymous says
What do you do on long trips with kids? Do you ever feed them fruit snacks or less messy food? Or do you just stop somewhere for meals?
Jennifer Haag says
Love my Clarisonic!!! I'll have to try out the dry shampoo you recommended. One of my middle school girls has extremely oily hair, while she showers everyday she doesn't like having to wash and redo her hair daily. Thanks for the suggestion!!
Sheaffer {Pinterest Told Me To} says
I need that wet brush in my life IMMEDIATELY. YES to the clarisonic. Gonna have to try the white strips. You and Erika have the whitest teeth!
Anonymous says
Oh I like the idea of the shade of shay on keeping the car neat with kids!
Melissa says
I love white teeth too and also love my coffee!!! Is it bad that I drink it through a straw to help them stay white longer?!?!!! 😉 I'm going to have to try that Opi Polish color. 🙂
Jenny Rackers says
I just ordered the face tanning pads and rose salve! Do you use the face pads in the morning before moisturizer and makeup or at night and sleep with it on?? Thanks!!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I use them before I moisturize in the morning :).
jen says
Love, love, love this post! And all the shades:) yes, please do an organized car/tips post. I need that one badly. May God continue to bless you and your family. I just love your tips, advice, positivity!
Jenny Rackers says
Whoops! I also meant to ask if you feel like using your retin a and clarisonic end up taking off the tan faster? I use those products too and was always worried it would take the glow right off??? Thanks!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Even with using my Clarisonic every day (and Retin A), the glow stays on at least four days.
kristen says
Can you tell me a little more about how you put oil on your hair every morning? is it just a little bit to tame flyways? I'm familiar with the Moroccan Oil, I'm just never sure how to use it.
Devon says
Hi Shay! I love your blog and have been following for a few years now. My mother's maiden name is Smith and the name has been lost in the family (she is 1 of 3 girls). Meeting your sweet boy, Smith, has inspired me to use the name for a boy 🙂 Separately, the Drybar dry shampoo is life changing! One of my favorite products as well!
Kathy Olson says
I always love these posts!
Chasity Munn says
Question about face tanning pads – I have some but haven't used them yet because I use my Clarisonic daily. Won't the Clarisonic just exfoliate the tan right off? Or do you just use them on days/times that you want to look like you got a little sun?

To anyone wanting to buy a clarisonic- I just did a few months ago as per Sheaffer & Shay's recommendations….and I've loved the "entry level" one for $99- mine from sephora. It's called the Mia. The next one up is the Mia2 with 2 speeds for $149, and I agonized over if I needed the extra speed. My normal skin has done superb w the $99 one and I don't even know what I'd use the 2nd speed for! So, if you want one for as little as possible- dont feel like you're being cheated out somehow by not buying the fancier models. Maybe this helps someone out there 🙂
Angela Ellingson says
I bought a wet brush after you recommended them before and it has transformed hair brushing time for my 4 year old. Thank you!!!

Anyone tried Essie's Splash of Grenadine? Please reply- I'd love to hear you girls weigh in on this shade!!! 🙂
Katie Surly says
I just bought the white strips (needed more- thanks for the reminder!), face pads, and opi wipe-off. LOVE these types of posts! Keep em coming 🙂 Thanks!

My oh my oh my how I love my Moroccan oil products too!!!! The absolute BEST hair products for me!!! Smells yummy too! Another really yummy smelling hair product that I have used for almost ten years now is Aquage "Beyond Shine" shine spray–just spritz it on styled hair for some extra shine…..smells so, so good!

I MUST try those Glow Pads. I self tan my body from March through October (North Carolina) but not my face. These look great.
My latest favorite is It's a 10 brand keratin spray. I have super thick, super coarse hair and this stuff straightens my hair like silk.

Love my Moroccan oil,,,,and opi Polish is the best. You must try funny bunny…the perfect neutral!!!!!

I just came across this blog post yesterday about natural teeth whiteners for those who don't/can't use white strips. http://www.mommypotamus.com/whiten-teeth-naturally-turmeric/

I love posts like this! I am alway hesitant to try new products, but someone else loves them it makes me want to try them out. I will look into dry shampoo. My hair in the winter can get so gross. It's a mixture of dry and oily. If I wash it too much it's dry, but if I don't it's oily!
Also, I am a HUGE fan of the wet brush! I have a small one for travel and large one for getting out of the shower.
You're blog is such a blessing! I love trying all of your recipes (I have never made something I didn't like) and tips.
Happy Tuesday!
Jordan Hyde says
Activated Charcoal is awesome for teeth whitening! Open capsules and mix with a tiny bit of water to make a paste. Put on teeth with q-tip and leave on while you shower. Rinse and then brush teeth. Absolutely no taste and makes a major difference in about two to three uses!
ginnbelle says
Since there are many choices now for Crest Whitestrips which one do you find works best? I must try Mod about You and definitely that spray from Drybar. Love your blog I look forward to it each and every day!
Kelly @ The OK Momma says
Ah I've been on the look out for a good dry shampoo! Thanks for sharing! And my mother in law gave me a clarisonic for Christmas and it is LOVE TRUE LOVE. Just the greatest thing ever.
Corinne Hubbuch says
I love moroccan oil too!! been using it for forever! But another product I stumbled upon recently was this great dry oil called bamboo smooth kendi oil. It's a dry oil mist that you spray on and it works so well to tame frizz without being oily to the touch! definitely give it a go 🙂

I also love these kinds of posts! One of my current favorite beauty products is the Kiehl's Olive Fruit Oil Deeply Reparative Hair Pak. If you read the reviews anywhere, they speak for themselves! It makes my hair so soft and unbelievably shiny. I also have wavy, thick hair on the coarser side and this helps make it very manageable! I am also loving the Suave Keratin dry shampoo. Very different (MUCH better) from the Suave Professionals dry shampoo just FYI. But I also want to look into the Dry Bar one you mentioned. 🙂 I'm also going to look into that nail polish! Thanks Shay!
Laura says
I recently followed all of your tips on nails from another fifty two shades of shay post but I don't think you commented on what base coat you use. I was just wondering what you use for your base coat. I recently bought the Seche ultra V top coat you suggested and love it! It has made my nail polish last so much longer! Thanks!

I had a love/hate relationship with Crest White Strips too (coffee and red wine lover right here!) until I found Colgate Optic White toothpaste. I noticed that minor stains were completely gone after a few days of using it! I haven't used white strips in awhile now and I'm totally happy with the color of my teeth!
Aqua Blue Glow says
Everyone is raving over the Clarisonic but no one has said why! Can anyone please explain what this product does and why people like it? Thx!
Anonymous says
I agree. I'm not sure what it does exactly.
Mrs. Kay says
You have to get Crest white strips for sensitive teeth! They work really well, but you use them less time/longer period so they don't bother your gums at all. I promise you will love them! I was ready to give up on regular strips as they bothered my gums so much, and the sensitive gums version saved me. At CVS or amazon 🙂

LOVE this shade of Shay! Always interested how you keep your pretty! I'm excited to try the glow pads, anything to brighten up my face!

I want to order those tan towels.. perfect.. thanks shay

I seriously want one of each of these products. Well, I already have the Clarisonic Mia and LOVE it and the Wet brush I have for my daughter, but not for me… yet. Next time you do a giveaway, you need to give away a basket of all of these goodies! 😉 I can't wait to read up on your makeup next time. You have such great taste, Shay!

Love all the recommendations!!
Have been using the glow pads since I read about them on your blog last year! Love.
all-time favorite hair product:
Kenra Platinum Blow Dry Spray
It's like a sponge and cuts drying time dramatically. Smells heavenly as well!
Christy says
I ordered the oil and glow pads. I can't wait to get my daughter a wet brush because she is super tender headed. Thanks for sharing!

What do you use to take your makeup off? Also, what do you use to wash your face? BTW I love all OPI products. My children love the "wet brush" you recommended. I plan on getting some and putting them with little Easter gifts I give to my nieces (perfect timing as summer and pool time is upon us). Thanks for the recommendation on the "wet brush".
Sara Lindberg says
I would love to know what top coat you use for your nails? The top coat I have always bubbles and my nail polish doesn't last more than a day. Love your Blog!
Michelle says
Have you ever tried the Makeup Eraser? It is fabulous. Just add water to this microfiber washcloth and it removes all makeup-even waterproof. It goes in the washing machine and comes out looking brand new. I just got one of these and love it!

I am soooooo excited to try the Triple Sec! I also live in McKinney- are there any salons here that sell it? Thanks 🙂

I've read your posts on the clarisonic but I'm terrified to try it, and it's expensive. I am 31 and have red, dry skin that is prone to break outs. Any suggestions?

You should ask Erika ..Shays friend she will know how to help you

I agree with all of these! Except OPI's Mod About You chips really easily for me. My new go-to OPI is Viking in a Vinter Vonderland for my fingers. It is gorgeous and I get a ton of compliments on it.
Re: the white strips… I have used these for years but they have not been working great for me lately. My dentist said they work better on younger teeth because they're more porous. Makes sense because I have definitely not been seeing the results I used to with them.
Amber says
You can also get a stronger strength of white strip from your dentist office. 🙂

Love those nail polish remover wipes! Very cool.
I love my Rodan & Fields! I ordered from Erika, and I just love how my face feels!

Thank you for the wet brush suggestion! I bought one at Target today, and it worked like magic on my daughter's hair tonight!

I love Crest Whitestrips too but the sensitivity is almost too much to bear! I just picked up Whitestrips "Gentle Routine" ones and hopeful they will deliver results w/o the dang sensitivity!

I still love all of my original picks but thanks to many of your suggestions over the last two years, I've added a few more to my list.
