The first goal I really knew I had last year was to “get my hair wet”. I’ve mentioned this before, but at the end of summer 2013, my sweet three year old told me that my friend Karla was the fun mom because “she got her hair wet” every time we were at the pool. Ouch. That hurt.
So, my goals started last June and my first one was to “get my hair wet” each time we were at the pool…and you know what, I did and my summer was awesome. So, it’s one year later and I’m still jotting down goals…they have me reading more books, inviting more people over for supper, staying off my computer on Sundays, visiting libraries and museums, cleaning out closets, planting a vegetable garden, practicing yoga, spending more time outdoors, staying on top of doctor visits and much more.
Let me know what your goals are for this month (or this summer!). I love new ideas!!
Before we get to June, let’s recap May…
1. Plant a veggie garden: I did! So far, so good! Thankfully, the rain and cooler temps have helped out tremendously. Most importantly, thanks to your tips here, my garden is much improved. I moved out some things (like the watermelon!), added some things (like strawberries and cucumbers!) and really took to heart each and every tip you gave me. If you want some great gardening tips, read the comments here. Seriously, you girls are a-mazing!
2. Find a great sunscreen: Well, thanks to the non-stop rain, I haven’t been able to test out as many as I would have liked. I purchased several (thanks again to your recommendations!) but we haven’t spent time outside because it won’t stop raining. I will say, that the few sunny days we’ve had (and there have been few), my favorite so far is this one…
That was May, now here is June…
1. Spend one on one time with all 4 of my loves: Now that school is out, it’s going to be harder for me to spend one on one time with my kiddos. Typically, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the big kids have been in school and I have had the day with just Ashby. Or on MWF, when Kensington has been in school, Smith and I have had a few hours each day while Ashby naps to play games, craft together and whatnot. Now, I’ll have all three all summer long, but I would still like to have that special one on one time with each of them (and Andrew too!). So, my goal this month is to do something individually with each of them.
2. Visit the eye doctor: Confession number one…at my annual physical last year, I failed my eye exam (first time in those 32 years that I have done that). Confession number two…at my annual physical this year (which was last Tuesday), I failed it even more (oh no!). Confession number three…I have never been to see an eye doctor or had a real eye exam. So…now that I’ve failed it twice and have started to notice that maybe a few things at a distance aren’t as clear as they used to be…I need to get my hiney to an eye doctor.
3. No social media/phone time from 4 to 8: I’ve noticed that sometimes, I get slowed down by texting, answering the phone, scrolling through Instagram or whatnot in the evening. You know, it’s after dinner and I’m leisurely cleaning up and texting at the same time…which is not an efficient way to spend my time. My goal is to put the phone down later in the afternoon and not pick it back up until after the kids are in bed.
4. Watch extra kiddos: I want to help out some of my friends by watching their kiddos several times this month. It’s hard during the summer to run your errands and such (plus, I have two friends who are packing and trying to move soon, so that’s even harder!) when all of your kids are home from school (and who wants to pay a babysitter?!), so I’m going to volunteer to watch extra kids this month. My kids will love having play dates with their friends and my friends will enjoy the kid-free time to get some stuff done.
5. Find a good tinted moisturizer: I don’t know about you, but I live in an area that sees temps soar to over 100 most days during the summer (and rarely dips below 90 even at night!), so wearing foundation and powder is just too much. I’m a girl on a mission to find a nice tinted moisturizer for my face. Suggestions always welcome :).
6. Get my hair wet: I’m getting my hair wet this summer. My kids will only think it’s fun to hang out by the pool with their mama for a few more years, so I better soak in every moment and get in that pool and play.
Those are my June goals. What are yours? I’d love to know!!
It’s June 1…so Meal Planning Monday is all about summer food! Woohoo!! See my easy breezy menu here.
Love you ladies. From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely love each and every one of you. I feel so grateful to do life with you each day. Happy Monday!

I love the Bare Minerals complexion rescue. It has SPF 30, and add this glow to your skin!
Darcy Sexson says
I was going to leave the same comment Kristina! 🙂 This stuff is amazing – it's all I wear on the weekends – plus a little mascara. 🙂

I second that!!! My friend told me about it a month ago and I've been using it since 🙂
Nicole says
Agree with all of you! 🙂 Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue is the best.
Brianne R says
I got a sample of the smashbox BB cream and its light but gives a good coverage. Our temps have been in the 90's with the nasty humidity and so I stop my normal foundation routine by June. I'm buying some of the BB cream for the days I want to put something on.

I wish I could say every night I have been putting my phone down, but I will say on the nights I do it's just better to have no distractions and just be there in the moment with my family,!

I swear by Bobbi Brown tinted moisturizer! Stayed on all summer when I lived in hot, humid North Carolina!

I use Everyday Minerals based in Austin, TX. They do not have a tinted moisturizer, but I have often mixed my minerals into my favorite moisturizer. Works fine for me.

Love the no phone from 4-8pm goal!! I'm going to try that. I fall into that while cleaning up (and sometimes preparing) dinner. Thanks for idea! 🙂

My go to staple in FL heat is the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. Love it!
morgan says
I second that! I have oily skin so I use it all year round. In the dryer months I use argan oil as a base but in the summer I usually just use the tinted moisturizer!
Liz F. says
I second the Bobbi Brown recommendation. My husband is typically oblivious to switch ups in my make up routine but when I began wearing Bobbi Brown's tinted moisturizer 2 summers ago, he complimented my complexion!
Jennifer Cannon says
And I forgot to add.. the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer is great for this girl! Our weather is here in GA is constantly humid and gross. Can't wear much on my face in the summer. That is my go to!
Good luck 🙂
Sarah Macinnis says
I absolutely love Bare Minerals complexion rescue! It's light coverage and also has sunscreen, SPF 30 built in! It's my go-to!!
Sarah Kuykendall says
I am going to follow your example and make my own June goals! So excited! Also following along to get recs on a tinted moisturizer, preferably one that's not super spendy! Happy Monday!
Sarah says
Laura Mercier & Bare Minerals are my two faves. Thankfully, I've gotten to the point where I don't wear foundation at all – just tinted moisturizer & some mineral powder. Living in Savannah, that's a major plus – especially in the summer. If you're looking for something that provides a little extra coverage when you're going to be out at the pool, I've paired a LaRoche Posay tinted sunscreen with just regular gel moisturizer. Happy June!
Mary Jensen says
I really like Clinque CC cream…I also use their Face Primer under that…
Beautifully Seaside // Formerly Chic Coastal Living says
You'll feel so much better once you have a new pair of eyeglasses 🙂 Sounds like a great list and I'm sure you're going to have the best summer ever. I was just thinking the same thing yesterday about turning off the cell phones for part of the day. God bless you! Hope you have the best week. 🙂

I love these goals (and also can't believe how BIG Smith is getting!)

I would recommend the Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturizer. Added bonus, there's also a broad spectrum SPF.
Shelby says
I am a mama to five kids and that one on one time is so precious yet so hard to come by. My solution has been to assign each of my kids a night and on their special night they get to stay up 30 minutes past their bedtime and do something with Mom. They can opt for watching a TV show with me, playing a game, having Mom join in on their imaginative play or we can just snuggle and they can use the opportunity to talk to me. We started this about a month ago and it has been such a huge hit. Each of my kids (ages 3-13) loves when it's their night with Mom and I have really enjoyed it too. My favorite part is that when I have had "one of those days"…the days when you feel like you yell all day and everyone is miserable…it's a perfect way to end the day. 🙂
Kelly @ Familiar Joy says
I love that, Shelby! I only have four kids, but it's so hard to get that time in. I might steal your idea! Thank you!

I always thought I was using a "good" one until I read the reviews here about the ingredients of common sunscreens. I'm not one to be overly paranoid about products but I couldn't ignore the info here:

I stumbled on the best tip ever to nix that shine we all get from oil, sweat & such- especaily in the summer and/or for really oily gals- CORNSTARCH! I know it sounds super weird, but it works like no other. After your tinted moisturizer, just dip a blush/foundation brush in cornstarch (yes, the regular old kind in the baking isle at the supermarket) and buff all over your face. It will dissipate and become invisible. Great for in between touch ups throughout the day too. Thought this tip might help some of yall that live in really humid climates……:)

Hands down Nars tinted moisturizer! It has SPF amd actual coverage but is light and airy – love it!
Kristin and Lori @ F-it! says
We both love Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer as well! It's got SPF 25, I believe, so it's good for average days but not necessarily beach/pool or when you're going to be outside a long time.

Kiehls makes an awesome BB cream that I use during the summer. I've tried other brands, but keep coming back to this one. And for sunscreen, my kids LOVE Sun Bum. They love the smell and don't fight me or on putting it on or whine if we have that. It can be harder to find, but both Ulta and Bed Bath and Beyond had it last time I was there.

Crazy but true, Loreal Magic BB cream is my fav. Gives you a tan glow and it is $8. Can't beat that.

I like Laura Mercier as well, feels light yet good coverage. I also liked the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue, very light feeling. I'm sure you know but concerning sunscreens, I was just at my dermatologist and she said using spray is like painting your walls with a sprayer, you don't quite get the coverage you need. She recommended using lotion for the first application and then spray for the reapplication throughout the day. I LOVE the spray when I'm trying to cover 3 kids and myself but I'm going to take the extra time this summer to do lotion on everyone before we leave the house. Lastly, I wanted to know what you wash your hair with after you swim? My one hesitation to getting my hair wet is the chlorine just ruins your hair. My kids use Ultra Swim and that seems to work ok for them. Any other recommendations? Thanks!

Looking forward to hearing what you find on tinted moisturizer! I have tried a few – looking for a bit of coverage without the greasy feel – with no luck! 🙁

Bobbi Brown tinted moisturizer! I wear it every day and don't even touch foundation – it's so great and has SPF as well.
Heather says
I've tried a whole bunch of BB Creams and the one I keep coming back to is Garnier Skin Renew BB Cream. I know, I was surprised too. I live in Eastern KS and it stands up to our heat and humidity, doesn't feel heavy, doesn't make me too shiny, and is just the right amount of coverage.

Senna Barely Base is my all-time favorite tinted moisturizer! for our Texas summers. Smooth and light but still enough coverage to make it worth it.

How do you keep your goals top of mind during the month? Just habit? I need to set some goals but I find that when I do, I right them down somewhere and then get so busy in the day to day that I just forget about the goals. I definitely need to make them a priority!

Dr. Green at Pinnacle Eye Associates off Lake Forest is the bomb! Just in case you're looking for someone to take care of your eyes. My husband found out he, in fact, didn't need glasses (though another "grocery store eye dr" told him he did) when he went to her. She's thorough, friendly and won't try to sell you glasses if you don't need them. My daughter did need glasses and got them from her. My son didn't need them, though his school said he might. I just love an honest business person!
Christine S says
I absolutely LOVE Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream!! It moisturizes, blends away imperfections and has a good amount of sunscreen–I'm fair-skinned like you and I need it. I wear it everyday, mostly with just mascara and lip gloss, and I have gotten so many compliments on my skin. At $8 it's definitely worth trying.
Erin says
Definitely try a tinted BB or CC cream!!!
Kim Francis says
It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream is amazing! The best thing about it…..SPF 50+. It has great coverage and if you have oily skin like me just a little dusting of powder and you are good to go! I love that in the summer I can put that on and not have to worry about applying sunscreen on my face because it is all built in! Half a pump will cover your whole face and neck with coverage.

I've never used it before, but my cousin swears by Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. My mom mixes Clinique BB and CC cream and uses that instead of heavy foundation.
Your message to us at the end is so sweet, Shay. We love you and your family, too. Thank you for sharing your precious world with us. I was telling my dad (a pediatric intensivist) over dinner the other night. He immediately became intrigued and asked to see pictures of her. I quickly whipped out my phone and showed him her arm and he immediately started asking me more questions about her. It warmed my heart to see him care about your daughter so much. She has quite the support team and several prayer warriors in hers, and your family's, corner.
I've listed my monthly goals over on my blog!

Shay, I have to thank you for posting so openly about your road with skin cancer and encouraging us all to get checked. I went in to get checked myself after putting it off and at the age of 35 I just found out today that I have skin cancer. So I wanted to add my voice to yours – get checked!! I'm not a 'sun lover' so I was shocked. I'm what you would call 'very fair' so I think most would be surprised to hear it! Thanks for the sunscreen recommendation! I'm headed to pick that up today and a rash guard top! Also, for a tinted moisturizer, Tarte is the best! And it has SPF too! I love it and wear it year round!

Love your blog! As an optometrist myself, I will encourage you to have your little ones get an eye exam as well in the near future, always good to make sure their eyes are healthy with a dilated examination, seeing if their eye muscles work well together, in addition to seeing if glasses would help. Looking forward to seeing how it goes for you!

Love the goal setting by month. I set goals for the week, but the list tends to be tedious with everyday stuff. Your monthly goals are more substantial and important. Might have to steal this idea. As for tinted moisturizer, can't go wrong with Laura Mercier, oil free version. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!

Neutrogena dry touch SPF 30 or SPF 100 🙂 I dont like the feeling of sticky and oily sun screen so I use this one ! But.. I live in Canada so I don't use sunscreen too often unless I'm on vacation so that may be why I hate the feeling of it haha.

Hourglass's Illusion Hyaluronic Skin tint is my current go to for a tinted moisturizer for summer! It is more than just a moisturizer, I think that my skin has improved with wearing this for the past month! It goes on super smooth, and has really great coverage for not being a regular foundation. Feels so light on and looks great. Hourglass is also one of Sephora's Made with Love Brands, which I think means that they are still created by their founders and are smaller companies. Its worth a try, and Sephora will always make you samples to try at home before you purchase.

As a wife of an Optometrist it is very important to get yearly eye exams not only for changes in vision but other health reasons as well. There are so many health issues that can be found by routine eye exams much earlier than yearly physicals. If you don't find a local Optometrist, I know a pretty good one in Carrolton, Tx! We would love to have you and your family come visit our office. I know Carrollton and McKenny aren't the closest but wanted to invite you anyway.

Glad to hear you're getting your first real eye exam! I'm an optometrist, and we definitely recommend yearly eye exams for everyone, not just to check for glasses, but to make sure everything inside your eye is healthy too! And definitely make sure you get your kiddos little eyes checked too! We recommend a complete eye exam for them before kindergarten. The screening at the pediatricians doesn't count. Good luck!!

I myself do not use a tinted moisturizer. I have tried various CC creams and have found that with the heat and humidity of the south I just sweat it off. I use Estee Lauder's double matte foundation. I wear it almost everyday, whether its cold or hot and it stays put. It is also very light.

I LOVE my Merle Norman tinted moisturizer. It's the Sheer Defense with SPF 15. It's the only makeup staple I can't live without and it's not at all oily or heavy. It perfectly coats and moisturizes my skin and protects it from the sun at the same time! I do switch between two shades in summer and winter to match my skin tone.
Love your June goals! I'm trying to be more intentional with social media/ text and phone time as well.

I have been using Revision Intellishade Matte SPF 45 for a few years now, and I love it!!!! My mom's esthetician gave her a sample for me to try, and I'm so glad I gave it a whirl! I highly, highly, highly recommend!
