One of my favorite posts each month is my Monthly Goals…which I’ve decided this year to call my To-Do List…because that just seems to more accurately describe it. Over the last two years of doing this, you guys have given me THE BEST ideas! I’m telling you, so many of your ideas and suggestions are now permanent parts of our family. So, thank you!
Here is my January to-do list…
1. Make a list of cold weather activities. So, I need some things to do when we can’t go outside but need to burn off energy. Things like going to the library, visiting our local bounce house, making some winter crafts (suggestions welcomed!) and stuff like that. What do you guys do with your kiddos when it’s cold outside? I need to be prepared before the weather strikes!
2. Walk or run on days I skip the gym. I love my group classes at the gym, but on days that I can’t make them, I need to still get outside and be active. During December, I was lucky to have made it to the gym once a week thanks to the gazillion things going on, so I need to just be better about that.
3. Find a face mask with lots of moisture. Ugg to dry winter skin! I’m open to any suggestions! I just need a good moisturizing face mask (homemade, store bought, I don’t care!). This dry weather combined with the heater going inside is sucking the life out of my skin. Help!
4. Go meatless twice a week. So, in December, I tried going meatless twice a week and kind of loved it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed animal protein at all (I heart a good juicy burger!), but sometimes it’s nice to have a more plant based diet every once in a while. I have several vegetarian recipes here you can try too if you’re interested in let’s say a Meatless Monday or something.
5. Clean out drawers in my kids’ rooms. Yeah, I’m pretty good at cleaning out closets, but I always forget to clean out their drawers. Um, like I’m pretty sure my six year old has size 3T shorts and pajamas in his drawers. I need to get on top of that ASAP!
6. Make s’mores outside. My kids would love it if we had a s’mores night at our house this January. That would be a pretty easy and fun way to entertain them on a weekend night.
7. Have a slumber party with the kids. I’m thinking a family slumber party in the living room would make a Friday or Saturday night extra special this month. How easy (and cheap!) would that activity be for my kids? And they would LOVE it!
What are you doing this January? If you missed yesterday’s post, my New Year’s resolution is to read the Bible all the way through this year. It’s not too late for you to start either! Comment and let me know if you’ve done this before or are thinking about doing it with me! I would love the company :).
And one last thing that should be on everyone’s January to-do list…
…making my Banana Nut Bread. It’s so simple and so delicious and great for breakfast or a snack.
Happy Wednesday!
xo

Hi Shay,
My resolution for 2016 is to read the New Testament! I am going to start smaller and maybe go with the whole bible in 2017 🙂
As for a moisturizing mask for winter… I love dermalogica' skin hydrating mask.
Happy January,
Melissa
Happylife38 says
I am with you on this, Melissa!! New Testament first. Also, and I am kind of embarrassed to say this, I have a hard time understanding and following the Old Testament. Any suggestions on bibles that aren't a children's bible, but is one that is understandable and easier to read than most? My main problem with not reading the bible has been the way that most are written. Very hard to follow. In that case, I put it down and don't come back. I am not a "reader" as it is. I get very antsy. Would love some input on this from anyone. Any suggestions on which bible to choose would be so welcome.
Mix and Match Mama says
I swear by the Life Application Study Bible in the New Living Translation! There is commentary by each verse. This version is so easy to read and explains things so well! Check Amazon or your local book store!
Ana Bland says
If you want an easy-to-understand translation for your Bible, especially for the Old Testament, I suggest The Message. It is a great, easy-to-follow translation. English is my second language and I love it because I understand it perfectly. It's written in simple, almost modern English. Happy January, everyone!
Amanda says
I love this version too!
Lauren says
For the past 10 years, I have read the "Daily Walk Bible" and I LOVE it. It is in the New Living Translation and has commentary and little "tid bits" of info as you read along. Every seventh day, there is a little devotional that is called "a look back" that helps you break down what you just read for the week. They are short and easy to read and you can also play catch up that day in case you get behind that week. I am a firm believer that being in the Word every single day is life changing. You will come to truly appreciate the Old Testament the more you read it. I begin every year with a different colored highlighter and highlight as I read. It is so fun to look back over a year and see what verses really spoke to me. I color code the years in the front of my Bible so I can see what stood out from year to year. Just my ten cents I wanted to throw out there! Good luck!
Wallups from Puyallup says
I am newer to the bible. My pastor suggested "The Story". It is the best and comes with a study guide.
Happylife38 says
To Ana Bland, Amanda, Lauren, Wallups from Puyallup, and Shay: I want to say "thank you so much" for your suggestions and input, it is so appreciated! Ana Bland, English is my second language also, but I can't even use that as an excuse, because I have a hard time understanding the Old Testament in my first language just as much, plus I have now been here in the US longer, than I lived in my country of birth, so I really can't blame the English language 🙂 However, I like the fact that you said that "the Message" is easy to follow even for us, who didn't grow up speaking English.
Lauren, your ten cents are worth much more to me 🙂 I like that you said that the Daily Walk Bible has a "look back" to go over what you just read the previous week.
Wallups from Puyallup, I like that your suggestion "The Story" comes with a study guide. And Shay, I like that your suggestion the "Life Application Study Bible" has commentary by each verse. I will look into all of these, and just wanted to thank everyone so much for their input.

Girl!!! My upstairs is half crazy organized and half proceed with caution! Drawers are being cleaned out and every basket and cranny I can find. I do not enjoy the task but afterward it'll feel so good!
Happylife38 says
Yes, yes, yes, I am so glad someone else has this problem. Half the place is OCD, perfectionistically organized and clutter-free, and the other half is obstacle course, bomb went off, burglar came to the house and didn't steal anything but just threw all the stuff from the drawers to the floor. Once and for all: I am getting my place, my w.h.o.l.e. place under control, de-cluttered and organized! This is my new year's resolution and it has already started and I am sticking with it if it kills me!!!
Kristin says
It's not a mask but I love Clinique moisture surge lotion!
Becca at One Girl says
I second this!!! I am not sure it is a daily use (especially in the summer) but it's amazing!!
Bryan Cathey says
I will second moisture surge (you can add it throughout the day without getting greasy) and also recommend Clinique Turnaround Overnight. I use it yearly at night but all day in the winter. I moved from Florida to tennessee last year and it saved my skin!
Julie says
Clinique Moisture Surge Intense for dry skin has been amazing this winter! FYI, I normally have combo skin but in the winter, my skin dries out and the Moisture Surge Intense has been great!
tales of dillonhood says
another fan of the clinique moisture surge lotion! it feels so good when it goes on, but i do sometimes need to apply another moisturizing on top. my skin feels that dry with the crazy cold weather in the pacific northwest! they do make a moisture surge overnight mask too. i got these as samples & i may buy the full sizes!
Eman S says
Love moisture surge too!!! The lotion and mask are both amazing! I use both at night!
Sarah Kuykendall says
I'm going to follow along to get some winter ideas. I could use a recommendation for a moisturizer, too. Pretty sure that banana nut board will be in my oven soon 🙂

I'm going to try "to do" rather than goals this month!! I LOVE my Erin Condren planner. Do you carry it in your purse? I bought the bands so I could, but it still seems bulky.

I'm anxious to hear what your other readers have for advice for a moisturizing mask!
I'm also with you, I need to clean both of my girls drawers out in their bedrooms =)

I love your goal to read through the Bible! My women's bible study just finished Seamless by Angie Smith (LOVE her) and I wanted to tell you that it would be a perfect companion as you read through the bible. It was one of my favorite bible studies and I really loved the videos too, you can find them on the LifeWay website. The study really helps piece all of the bible together as one story and I found it very empowering! Xoxo
ClintandGina says
Oh and we camp out in our big pottery barn tee pee in our playroom once per month. My girls think it is the best night ever!!
For workout….I mix 21 Day Fix with walking running. My running tools are the app Runtastic. It's free and tracks everything. I also got Fitbit HR for Christmas. I LOVE it!! Gets me moving and I try to hit 10,000 steps per day. My girlfriends have one, so we can become "friends" and challenge each other!

Fresh: Rose Face Mask … Bonus fact is 61 five star Nordy reviews!?

I second that, Emily! Fresh makes some awesome products. I like their milk bath too. Soothing.

Love the Rose mask too!

Sone years ago during a deployment, we needed to spice up the long winter so we made up a holiday and called it Cold Day – original, no?! We measured how many mittens long we were, made ice homemade ice cream, cut out snowflakes, did puzzles with snow scenes, printed coloring and activity sheets from the computer, etc. We have purchased fake snow in a can from the dollar store (specifically the one with tree in its name) – it's messy, so a disposable tablecloth is handy – and I let the kids play with little animal figures in a container filled with it. All of our food was thematic; we have more pancake molds than I can count, soup with penguin crackers (Wal M), sugar cookies, hot cocoa, etc. I started keeping a basket of thematic books out when they were little, too. It was fun for them when the books rotated to a new season. Cold Day was and still is (a scaled back version) an annual event.

Love the snores and slumber party idea!! Perfect for a cold January night! Xo

I'm off to make my list!!!!!!

My dermatologist recently recommended CeraVe Moisturizing Cream for my face. She said to apply it at night. I'm not gonna lie- I'm a "face snob" when it comes to products I use on my skin and to know I can buy this at WalGreens or even the grocery store already had me at no way I'm using that. I decided to give it a try before spending tons on another–oh my word–my skin is COMPLETELY transformed! It's soft as a baby bottom and fresh & dewy. Plus this cream doesn't clog pores and has no fragrance. $15 for a big jar. Who would've thought!!
Jenn W-K says
I second this!! I have sensitive skin and my dermatologist recommended CeraVe so I've been using it for a while with great results.
I love me some Sephora, so an inexpensive moisturizer that works great is right up my alley…more money to spend on lipgloss!
Meagan @ The Clanahan Fam says
Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask from Origins – SO good! Love your January goals!
Heather Lockhart says
I agree! Love this mask.

I wish I loved January like you do 😉
We have a great Children's Museum and an Aquarium that we frequent during the winter months. Another thing you can do is go to the "indoor" parts of the zoo. My kids love reptiles, bats and Manatees!
Tara Smith says
Art suggestion for you and the kiddos…something I want to do with my future kiddo…Michaels has those canvas blank frames on sale right now. You can take cookie cutter shapes or letters or the bottom of canned goods or simply hands or feet and let the kids pick paint colors and dip the bottoms of any of those things and stamp art the canvas. Have them sign their name like an artist in the corner and voila! Art for their wall and a memory in time that is captured for y'all!

I have had fabulous results with adding one drop of pure Frankincense oil to my daily moisturizer. I can not beleive how great my skin feels. I need to do it to my legs too. They are always so dry in the winter.
Elaine Welte says
Try Roman Chamomile too!!!!

It's not a mask but my dermatologist recently gave me samples of VaniCream and I LOVE it. I'm really not a "product" person but I'm 33 and I need to start ramping up my skin care. The package says: Moisturing skin cream for sensitive skin – free of dyes, lanolin, fragrance, sarabands and formaldehyde." I don't know what lanolin is and I SURE as heck didn't know I needed to check to make sure things were free of formaldehyde so….#Learnings! It's seriously great for this low-maintenance, mid-30's lady
Nicole Prša says
YES, YES YES to VaniCream! It is the BEST!

Hi Shay!
I love your blog and following your kiddos. Will you join me in praying for Micah? All the odds are against him, but I believe in a miraculous God. As one of Micah's former nurses, he truly made an impact on my heart.

Also, I read the Bible in a year, but I did a plan that broke it up into 7 categories. I really enjoyed it.

I love Tarte Maracuja Oil for winter moisture! I like that it's just oil with no other ingredients, and it absorbs into your skin and doesn't feel oily at all. Your face feels so soft when you wake up in the morning!

Happy New Year! In the last few years I've read the bible through in a year, twice for the first times in my life. The first time I printed a one year plan from the Internet for reading in one year – in chronological order (as events are believed to have happened) and read through The Living Bible.
The second time, I used my iPad with the bible app, which was wonderful! You can choose many different plans (I chose chronological again) and your preferred version. I try to stick as close to KJV as possible, but The Living Bible is easy reading and you can swap between versions if you want to. The plan gives you the calendar date as you go and it checks off and shows dates as they are completed. You can also highlight (a whole choice of different highlight colors) and create notes that are saved just for you!
I needed a new plan this Jan 1st and there is a plan for reading the four gospels in 30 days, and that's what I am currently reading.
God bless you for constantly growing and encouraging others to do the same!
Briana Lee says
I work in the beauty industry, so I've been lucky to try tons of skincare products. My recommendation for dry winter skin is to have an ultra-hydrating moisturizer like Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream (really good for cold weather as it was designed for skiiers + mountaineers) and mix it with two to three drops of a good face oil like Jurlique's Balancing Face Oil or Aesop Fabulous Face Oil. A great mask is Avene's Soothing Moisture Mask or Dr. Jart's Water Fuse Water-Full Hydrogel Sheet Mask.
Hope this helps! 🙂

Try GlamGlow Thirsty mud mask (in the blue container-sold at Sephora). It's a little pricey but a little goes a long way and it works so well and really rejuvenates the skin!!
Morgan Godbold says
I've been on a hunt for the perfect moisture mask too! I've tried the Glamglow thirsty mud and the Origins drink up intensive overnight skin mask to quench skin's thirst! They were both good, but the Origins one is by far my favorite and I highly recommend it!

I am going to organize our closets and I am not looking forward to it. I really like the ART creme masque by Young Living.
Elaine Welte says
I have been wanting to try their ART line!
Teresa P says
I use the ART face wash, serum and moisture cream along with the creme masque and I love them all!
Sarah Barber says
I use Mary Kay's Moisture Renewing Gel Mask for added moisture! You can leave it on for 10-15 minutes then rinse off or leave it on overnight(which I LOVE!) It's clear so it doesnt rub off on your pillow, and your skin feels amazing the next day 🙂
Carolina Anet says
Hey Shay! I'm so happy to hear that you're choosing to go meatless twice a week. Most of us aren't opposed to animal protein. I love it and don't believe humans are herbivores by nature. I'm going vegan because I can't live with myself knowing how those poor animals live and are killed everyday. You're doing a beautiful gesture for you, the planet and the animals.
Also, for a good moisturizing mask, try the Glamglow Thirstymud (it's the blue one). You can use it for 20 minutes or overnight. It's amazing! 😉
Kristi Mitchell says
A good body butter will keep all of your skin moist throughout the winter. You can either buy one without all the harsh chemicals that regular lotions have in them, or make you own (which is what I do).
Spencer Cox says
Thanks for the idea to read the bible in a year – I've never seen that kind of bible before! I always read bits and pieces throughout the year but I am not consistent at all – and I've never actually read it all the way through. Is it ok to admit that? 🙂 Hope you and your family have a great 2016, Shay!
Brooke Allen says
I, too am reading the Bible in one year! It is something I have never done and really am looking forward to it. Do you read each day in the morning or evenings? My 2-year-old loves going to Jumpstreet in Allen. It's great for not so nice weather days (or any day!) and to get out some energy. I'm looking forward to reading everyone's suggestions on face masks…my skin is quite dry right now too.
Stacey O'Neill says
philosophy-hope in a jar. its expensive, but a little goes a long way!
Jennifer Crowe says
Hi Shay! Love your blog! I swear by the good, old-fashioned Ponds Rich Hydrating Cream. My skin is so dry – even in the summer, and it is the only thing that works! I use it at night before bed, and in the morning I used Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture for Sensitive Skin. Works like a charm! Hope this is helpful 🙂 Have a great day!!!!
Bethany Bedford says
I absolutely love the slumber party idea, I might have to steal that one. I too am having a hard time finding activities to do with my daughter during the winter. She's two and we live in a small town, with not that much to do. We do crafts, build forts, have dance parties, but I would love to hear what you come up with ideas for the winter. 🙂
Debbie K. says
I'm sooo ready to get my house in order! Christmas is coming down this weekend. As for the heavy cleaning and organizing… that will happen when my son heads back to college mid January. I have been working on piles that needed to get done; Christmas receipts, Cards, etc. I'm read for fresh and spring.
Max's mom says
I have been using Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for the past few months and it is amazing! I bought it for my body (elbows and knees) because it is fragrance free, but I tried it on my face and couldn't believe how wonderful it was. It is a thick cream but it soaks right into your skin. I thought for sure that I would break out because it is a thicker consistency, but nope, my skin is completely clear and super soft. In fact one of my friends just asked me if I started using something new because she noticed a difference in my skin. It is so convenient just having a big jar of the stuff in my nightstand and applying one product all over from head to toe.
Kaleigh Turner says
Reading through the whole Bible was my new years resolution last year. I loved it! I thought I'd have a hard time making it a habit to read my daily passages every morning (I'm not a morning person), but I got it done and it made me actually look forward to the mornings. I used the YouVersion Bible App to keep me on track. It felt so good to see day 365! This year I'm working on studying the bible more and memorizing verses. Can't wait to follow you on your journey to read the whole bible in 2016!

I sometimes add some avocado oil (just a drop) to my face and neck (and sometimes hands and chest) after my regular facial moisturizer! Also, I just got the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask from Sephora and I love it. It's super moisturizing, stays on all night and isn't heavy at all!
Olga says
Great list. I will be following along for ideas on activities for the kids and new moisturizers. It's 31F right now and I could step up the hydration. Something that has helped me so far is to use cleansing oils that won't strip my skin instead of regular cleansers – loving Clinique's take the day off or the body shop's Camomile Sily Cleansing Oil. Another great moisture addition is Hydraluron Moisture Serum under your moisturizer.

I read the One Year Bible in 2015 (but the NIV by the same publisher) and LOVED it, the daily old, new, psalm, and proverb sections made it so easy for me. I was missing it and thinking of starting again from the beginning when I read your post and decided to order the NLT from amazon that you linked. I figure why not read a different translation for 2016, so thank you for the idea! I still like use guided Bible studies but there is something so much more personal about reading and interpreting the Bible yourself. Great idea!

I am reading The Daily Bible, 365 days of reading in chronological order. It has been an awesome way to start my day. My 3 kiddos have even been asking me to read out loud as they eat breakfast before School. I have loved reading your posts about your adoption process with Ashby. I too have adoption on my heart and am praying that my husbands heart will soften to the idea. Your family is beautiful! Thank you for all of your inspiration!

I use coffee grounds as an exfoliant and Coconut oil as moisturizer. Works like a charm. I use it on my whole body and my skin feels great!

I use the mud soap, the cleansing milk and essential moisture cream and they work like a dream in the dry, cold Idaho winters.

Try Farmhouse Fresh for a mask! It is made in McKinney! I love their Dirt one! Their foot scrub was on Oprah's Favorite list!

I went on a mask binge this summer. I tried so many. I like the Sephora masks. You unwrap it, and place it I your face for 10-20 mins. I usually do mine before bed to relax, or even in the morning on the weekend to start the day. Also- the Origins Red Clay mask… It's a peel off, and your skin will feel so soft.
I also use the oils (Tarte Marajuca, Fresh Seaberry). All available at Sephora!
Ps- love your blog! Been reading for a year now, and I always thought I wanted to adopt, but now, I really feel it in my soul after watching your journey!

That was my goal last year! I used a Max Lucado daily bible and it was such a great way to start my day!

Hi Shay… love your blog! I totally get the face moisture issue… Colorado is cold and dry and it wrecks havoc on my skin! For added moisture…look at the Beautycounter line. I happen to sell it, but I absolutely LOVE it. All the products are made from non-toxic safe ingredients and there are a couple of products that I use daily in the winter to keep my skin soft. 1st- the #2 lustro oil (#1 and #3 are for super sensitive or angry skin types). I know- putting oil on your face is so scary, but this really works. I use it daily under my moisturizer and it works wonders. 2nd- I use the Nourishing Cleansing Balm nightly. It not only takes off my makeup, but it adds moisture. You can even leave it on overnight for added moisture. Hope this helps and good luck knocking things off your January to-do list!

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask! It's SAVED my skin when I was on Accutane therapy (skin so dry, it hurt, and makeup flaked like crazy!)
You don't even have to wash this off, it's like a leave-in moisturizing mask you put on before bed, and in the morning, your skin will feel 100x better!
I even got my boyfriend on this haha.

For a fun indoor activity make snow with your kids. There are a lot of recipes on Pinterest using baking soda and conditioner. I liked the one that added glitter as an option. 🙂

If you soak Crayola (this is the only brand I've tried… Just because it says "nontoxic") Watercolor pencils in water for a couple minutes, just until the tips are soft, and then put your kids in front of a mirror (I'll turn a full length one sideways on my bathroom or kitchen floor) and let them paint their own (or each other's) faces. Seriously, so much fun. I learned about this while I taught preschool at USU, but have used it with my own kids so many times since- and they LOVE it. I hand them a cheap makeup wipe when they're done and it wipes right off. If you really want a great day, lay down and let them decorate your face. It's pretty relaxing 🙂

I live in Idaho and I SWEAR by Apricots Overnight face mask and Never Grow Up Creme by Perfectly Posh!! I even put it on my boys as they're struggling with winter skin too. Very moisturizing, naturally based, made in the US, no parabens, sulfates, pthalates, or petroleum based products, and everything less than $25. I'd love to send you some samples to try! katie@driventoposh.com perfectlyposh.com/katiegarcia

Reading the bible thru was also one of my goals for 2016. I downloaded a free app called. BIOY – bible in one year. I really like it. It has a devotion to go along with the scriptures each day. Each day is broken into 3 scriptures..a Psalm, new testament and old testament.

Arbonne hydrating facial mask. The best! Sooo soothing and moisturizing. 🙂

Try Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight mask – it has apricot kernel oil & smells amazing! It's way more natural than most department store brands. I like to use their Modern Friction Brightening Pads first, then slather on the mask before bed. I wake up with skin that feels like a baby's bottom. It's also great on dry hands.
Brittany Tinsley says
For dry skin you definitely need to try Arbonne's hydration mask! There are a lot of companies today that are "natural" and "chemical free" but Arbonne is truly the cleanest, safest and most effective products I have found. They have been around 35 years and have been vegan, paraben free and mineral oil free from the very beginning. They are formulated in Switzerland (the absolute highest standards of skin care in the world) but all made here in the USA. I guarantee you won't be disappointed with their products!
