It’s What’s Up Wednesday!
The last Wednesday of the month, my friends Mel, Sheaffer and I host this link up where we share some random and fun stuff that’s up with us today. If you blogged WUW too, make sure you link up at the bottom of the post! Every month, we answer these questions…
…plus a bonus question.
So, here we go…this is what’s up with me today…
1: WHAT WE’RE EATING THIS WEEK:
We’re eating all the home cooked meals this week. #amen
As much as I love traveling, there is just nothing like eating meals at home. This week, some of my favorite fall food is on the menu. You can see my Meal Planning Monday for the week HERE.
And if you need some fall food inspiration, you can click HERE for my favorite fall recipes (both savory and sweet).
Give me all the fall food this time of year.
2. WHAT I’M REMINISCING ABOUT:
Did someone say China? Because that’s all we’re reminiscing about these days :).
3: What I’m loving:
Kensington and I still can’t stop wearing our booties. Kensington wore her booties almost every day in China. She swears they are the comfiest shoes she has. I didn’t take my booties to China but you better bet I’ve been wearing them daily since our return. I love bootie season so much :). Mine come in three colors and I bought the wood suede version.
And I also love my polish color. It’s OPI’s Let’s Be Friends.
4: WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:
We’ve been recovering from jet lag. Whew! IT IS A BEAST! Just when you think you’ve got it beat, it sneaks up on you and takes you down. We’ve all been in a bit of a fog the last week. The other night, I walked in and Madeley was on the floor wedged between the chair and and the ottoman. I asked Andrew what she was doing and he was like “she was playing and then just laid down”. Girl…I feel you!
5: WHAT I’M DREADING:
Hmmm…I don’t think I’m dreading anything right this minute.
6: WHAT I’M WORKING ON:
Thankfully, I arranged my schedule so that I’m not working on a lot right now…I’m kind of on a maternity leave of sorts and enjoying time with my baby. I wrapped up another cookbook the day before we left for China. (Praise the Lord, I wanted it done and turned in before we left and I just.barely.made.it.) I have some speaking events coming up, and will do a little promotion for Eats, but basically, I’m just focusing on my travel agency between now and the rest of the year.
Speaking of my travel agency…
…I just love it when sweet families send us pictures from their vacations! Right now, we are booking trips for new clients to Walt Disney World or any cruise that sails in the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii or Alaska. Just email us at mixandmatchtravelagency@yahoo.com for more info. My job is so happy :).
7: WHAT I’M EXCITED ABOUT:
Eats hits bookstores THIS SATURDAY! If you pre-ordered on Amazon, you either already received your copy or will be getting it very soon…but as of October 1, you can actually go to your local bookstore and grab a copy. I am so proud of this book. I hope you love it too!
8: WHAT I’M WATCHING/READING:
I only have 3 more episodes of The Good Wife left and friends, IT IS SO GOOD! I am seriously going to be sad when Alicia Florrick leaves my life. I just love and hate binge watching because when it comes to an end, it’s always so sad. As for what I’m reading, my September Book Review will be on Monday and it might be my best batch of books for the year…so you do not want to miss it!
9: WHAT I’M LISTENING TO:
Oh. My.
I mean…you all know how much I love me some Michael Buble and his new album comes out in October…but right now, you can pre-order the new album on iTunes and instantly get the first four songs on the album. I’m obsessed. Now, I’m about to be obnoxious and name drop here…but a few years ago I became friends with both of his sisters and they know how much I fan girl, so they text me little behind the scenes pics and snip-its from things and it’s like my favorite thing EVER. This album is amazing…you all need it :). I can’t wait for his 2017 tour!
10: WHAT I’M WEARING:
Well…the weather is finally changing a bit here in North Texas, so I’m enjoying some of my favorite fall things…
…like these gray jeans and my leopard top (with my booties, of course!). I showed a picture of the back of the jeans because I know some people want to see pockets and such. They’re super comfy with just the right amount of stretch. And I didn’t realize my plaid shirt was back there until just now, but it’s cute, right? It’s from J. Crew.
And then two days ago, I ordered these two scarves for fall…
Hello pretty fall scarf. I love you.
I thought this red one looked like the holidays (it comes in grey too).
And speaking of scarves…this one I bought last year…
…well, it’s back in stock this year too. It’s soft, it’s plaid, it’s pretty….it’s basically perfect.
11: WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND:
Going on a road trip.
I mean…nothing says a week back home from China like a big road trip, right?
Andrew is being inducted in the inaugural class of his high school’s hall of fame this weekend, so we are loading up and heading to Missouri to watch him be honored. Plus bonus, now all of our Missouri family can meet Miss Madeley.
12: WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT MONTH:
The list is LONG my friends:
Madeley’s 2nd birthday
The State Fair of Texas
Pumpkin Patch visit
Southlake’s Oktoberfest
Our annual Harvest Party with friends
Halloween and trick or treating
13: WHAT ELSE IS NEW:
Oh goodness, everything feels kind of new right now…I’m just trying to keep my head above water.
Bonus question this month: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FALL FOOD:
Well…I have hundreds of recipes perfect for fall 🙂. Here are just a few of my faves:
Pumpkin Bread with Marshmallow Buttercream Frosting
Pumpkin Chocolate Chunk Cupcakes
For my Wickedly Simple Halloween Treats, click HERE.

Tracie says
Good morning Shay. I thought of your story (infertility to a multicultural/adoption household!) while reading today’s passage from the one year bible (particularly the first few verses). Thanks for daily inspiration on all levels of managing this crazy life from the spiritual (one year bible) to the fun (scarves!).
Kerri says
I received Eats last week as I preordered from Amazon! Thank you! Excited to make some things! I live in Boston so I am so excited to see October too it’s the prettiest month here! You should do a book tour here and see October baseball! The Sox are doing good! Also, congrats to your beautiful family on the new addition of Madeley! I am a blog follower and I love how your honesty and hearing about your journey to adopting.
Sheaffer says
You looked SO CUTE yesterday in your leopard top, grey jeans, and booties! I loved all the fall colors with the sleeveless top. It was a perfect outfit to ease into fall (and darling)! And oh my goodness! I forgot about your road trip this weekend! Can’t wait to read about it next week!

I’m like half awake here in Jersey. Of course your blog is one of the first things I check as I’m getting out of bed. My eyes were like this ???? when I saw our picture! Haha! Wasn’t expecting that. ???? (We had such an amazing time for our first trip to Disney. Having help planning this trip totally made it less overwhelming! Disney is no joke. Not for the faint of heart. ????)
Anyways, I want to say how encouraging it has been to see your adoption journey. I may or may not have cried at some of your posts. We are starting the process too so I appreciate your honesty and your joy through it all. *hugs*
emily @ a little bit of emily says
Madeley looks right at home cuddled in her K State blanket! Hope the road trip to Missouri is a good one – it’s really starting to feel like fall here which is so lovely!
Narci says
Cute, cute!! You look precious in those grey jeans friend!! Love!!
Loren says
I went out and bought the booties last week! Love them. This might be to personal but with all the new purchases you make (and I as well, and almost all of us ha) how do you keep it all organized, keep your closet fresh and the newest stuff available… What I’m saying is, I think we need a closet tour? I know you’ve done house tours/room tours in the past, but I think its time we see your closet and how you keep it all organized 🙂 Based on what we see in the back, everything looks so neat and orderly and organized (maybe by season?) I just need a little help in that department and wonder how you do it. I feel like I am buying new but can’t really get rid of the old and now I am over my head with stuff and everything is wrinkled and hard to find. Send help. Or coffee.
Mary says
I feel the same! I don’t know what to get rid of. How do you know?
Danielle McDermott says

Welcome home and thank you for sharing your family with us and the cutest new addition, Madeley. I received my cookbook last week and have already made several yummy dishes. Love the plaid scarf for fall. Also, can you please share the size you purchased in the jeans and I’m also wondering if they stretch out a lot with wear? Thanks again!
Mix and Match Mama says
They’re 26 and no, they haven’t stretched out as I’ve worn them!
Angie says
Because of you I switched on The Good Wife last Friday while cleaning up my room. Let’s just say about 8 minutes into it I stopped cleaning and got cozy in bed for a few episodes. Love this show! I didn’t think I could see Julianna Marguiles as anyone but Carol Hathaway from ER, but she OWNS the role of Alicia.
Angela Ellingson says
I LOVE your new cookbook! And Michael Bublé is my favorite, too! My hubby and and I saw Tour Stop 148 in theaters last night and it was so fun. We were sitting in the back row and I looked around the theater and thought, “these are my people.” 😉 Now I just need to see him live finally! 2017!!
Rebecca Jo says
Y’all never stop, do you? 🙂 Have a great road trip this weekend.
Love Madeley just laying there. Wouldn’t it be great as an adult to just stop & drop whenever/wherever we want? 🙂
So excited about your book!!!
Andrea says
So blessed by you and I don’t even know you. God is good. Thank you for inspiring me to post today. Here’s my what’s up Wednesday.

Just bought all 3 cookbooks for my sisters bridal shower this weekend! I can’t wait for her to open them!
Also, you may not share this (and that’s okay!) but I was just curious if madeley will have her own room like the other kids, if so is that something you may share with us?
Praying for your family ????????????
Mix and Match Mama says
I will do a post all about it! It’s on my to-do list :).
Erin Port says
Love all the pictures of sweet M, age is precious! Also love all the info you have provided on adoption, we are in the prayer stage ourselves. These posts have really stirred my heart…like many tears ;)!

Jenny says
Madeley’s face is just the sweetest! I’m glad you are getting some time to hang out with your sweet baby. Can’t wait to hear more about how she’s adjusting. xo
Lindsay @ Lindsay's Sweet World says
Girl, you are one busy lady! I swear, you guys have so much going on! All such wonderful things, though! I know you’re thankful for all of it. I hope Madeley is settling in well!
Nicole says
Okay, so I have to say your ability to mold and be flexible with your kids and just life in general really encourages me to do the same! You just seem to have a good balance with things. Yet still get things done. 🙂
In this transitional season of being home more, what do you do about working out? Your normal routine? Those are things you have really helped me with juggling.
Thanks Shay! So happy for you and your sweet family.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well, thank you. Believe me when I say, it’s a daily struggle. I really try not to be too hard on myself about working out. You can only do so much, right? I just can’t beat myself up all the time. There are always seasons in life that you have to just go with.
Megan Butler says
Girl!! you are going to beat me in finishing The Good Wife!! I have 6 episodes left…what are we watching next???!!! And I think I need to download Buble so I can listen to the first 4 songs all the way to girls weekend!!
Allie says
Thanks for hosting today! Love the leopard top and can’t wait to start cooking with pumpkin again! Every time you post about your Disney trips, I get so excited! We’ve got our money saved up in an account and can’t wait to have you and Erika plan our trip for us in 2018!
Mel @ The Larson Lingo says
Way to go on finishing up another cookbook! Proud of you!!!

Have you watched the new show THIS IS US? Ohmygoodness it is great! There have been two episodes already. Its a must see 🙂 Comes on Tuesday nights at 9c. I recommend watching the first two episodes first if you haven’t seen them yet. Everyone is comparing it to the next best thing to Parenthood.

Oh my word… I’m pretty sure marshmallow frosting is what pumpkin bread has been missing! Heart eyyyyyes!!!
Stacey says
Your Pumpkin and Sausage Pot Pie is my favorite!
Marika Scotton says
I have a completely random question but thought I would ask 🙂 Because you always post amazing pictures of your home and all of the kids rooms, I was wondering if Madeley will be getting her own room, and if so how will it be decorated? 🙂 Also, I CAN’T wait for your Book review coming up, always my favorite along with all the Nordstrom items you convince me to buy.
Mix and Match Mama says
Hahaha! I love random questions! I’m going to post pics soon, so you’ll see!
Jessica says
