Whew! We. Are. Back.
On Saturday night, we returned from a 10 day vacation with 18 members of my family to Seattle and then on an Alaskan Cruise.
That’s right…18 of us went.
It was a once in a lifetime, super fun, a little crazy, very loud, never dull trip that we will remember forever.
18 people.
6 kiddos.
3 strollers.
A ton of whales.
So many bald eagles.
7 cabins.
1 trip to the cruise ship medic.
2 lost pairs of sunglasses.
1 recovered pair of sunglasses.
1 pair we’re still trying to locate.
A little sea sickness.
About 400 rounds of cards and/or dominoes.
Bowls and bowls of chowder consumed.
Icebergs.
Cold weather.
A birthday girl.
More ice cream gobbled up than one could count.
And much, much more!
So, how did this vacation come about? Well, Andrew and I had decided to take our kids on an Alaskan cruise and then last July, my parents got wind of our idea and kind of hinted that they would like to go, so we said, sure, come on! Then, my grandmother said she wanted to go…so, we said, absolutely! After that, we just started inviting people because…why not? We booked us all on a 7 night round trip cruise out of Seattle last July and then before we knew it, we were departing 11 months later. We spent the first day and a half in Seattle before we boarded the ship so we could get to know Catherine’s hometown better and so we could celebrate Ashby’s 5th birthday.
Here we go…loads of pics from days 1 & 2 in Seattle. As always, if we’re wearing something new that you may or may not want more info about, I’ll add a link.
Happy Wednesday friends! It’s so good to be back with YOU!
About a third of us flew together to Seattle…and when my grandmother showed up at the airport, I was so delighted to see that she had made herself a Barrington Bag too!! I had no idea! Look at our three bags. Aren’t they all so fun?! Best totes EVER!
Airport selfie with Grandmother and Ken (affectionately called Papaw by the littles).
Our flight left at 10:30, so we grabbed brunch beforehand. We were pumped! Side note: we finally bought a selfie stick 😉 .
Annnnnnd…three and half hours later, we landed in Seattle and this was the best pic I could get. Ha! We landed, checked into our hotel and were ready to hit the town.
First stop, Pike Place Market! Apparently, we brought the cold snap with us to Seattle. Everyone kept saying how warm it had been up until the day we landed. It was in the low 50s with drizzle but that didn’t stop us!
Catherine, Sean and Samuel were already in Seattle and they met us there. Madeley couldn’t wait to greet Samuel!!
We, of course, watched them throw fish 🙂 .
Madeley was loving her day in Seattle!
We visited the very first Starbucks! Aunt Shay and Uncle Andrew thought it was so cool…Samuel, not so much.
Love that boy of mine!
Family of six er seven. We’d keep him if they’d let us 🙂 .
After enjoying the market, we found a park for the kids to blow off some steam. My big three climbed right in…
…and then Uncle Seanie did too.
After the park, we visited the gum wall. At first, Kensington was not sure about this place. Pictures do not do it justice. It is crazy big!
Our crew checking out the gum.
That’s me…adding my piece!
Sweet Ashby adding her piece too.
Finally, we made our way to dinner at Cutters Crabhouse. This seafood and steak place was Catherine’s suggestion and it was delicious!! We all loved it! Catherine’s family met us there and we had one big family dinner. In this picture, Ashby is all like “are you taking my pic?”…
…and then she’s all like “oh, well, let me say cheese then!”.
Miss Madeley loves her daddy!
My last picture with my four year old. The next morning, we woke up and…
…this girl was FIVE!
And she was LOVING it!
Our birthday girl!
Just the six of us spent the day together celebrating Ashby before our family dinner that night. We had loads of fun things to do! First up, breakfast in our hotel. And I loved my black top HERE and my scarf HERE. I’m going to be wearing that top a lot!
It’s always so fun traveling with this guy!
Gotta love the selfie stick!
Our first stop of the day was the Space Needle! We only waited in line about 5 minutes before we took the elevator to the top. It was really easy to get in and out of there.
Four excited kids about to head up!
There was so much to learn as you walked through to the elevators. We were soaking up the history!
View from the top!
This face!
The birthday girl taking a look at Seattle!
The Space Needle was the perfect start to our day!
We walked back by the gum wall to see if Kensington’s gum bubble was still there. It was! She was pumped about that!
After that, we walked to the big Ferris wheel out on the pier. My kids loved this! We went around 6 times before we got off.
Well…Kensington was a little nervous because it takes you out over the water. Ha! I was a little nervous too!
The birthday girl was having a blast!
And she’s smiling now!
After the Ferris wheel, we walked to lunch on the pier at Ivar’s. I ate fish at every single meal while we were gone. I could not get enough! At this lunch, I had a cup of crab chowder and fish tacos. Yummy!
Happy sisters!
And after lunch, we walked down to the Seattle Aquarium. We liked it because it was very hands-on.
We all got to touch lots of fun sea creatures!
Birthday shenanigans!
Smith loved taking pics of the fish!
This kid’s a keeper!
So, after our fun-filled day, we headed to dinner at Primo’s Pizza with my family to celebrate Ashby’s birthday (okay…this would be the one meal I had without fish 😉 ).
This restaurant was another Catherine pick because it was pizza (which Ashby loves!) and close enough for all of us to be able to walk to from the hotel.
One half of the table 🙂 .
Everyone brought a few little things for Ashby to open and then we sang happy birthday and celebrated with gelato.
This little dog was a huge hit!
By the time we got back to the hotel, our kiddos were wiped. We went to bed excited because the very next day, we were boarding our ship!!
That’s part one…see you tomorrow for part two!!
Really and truly, you have no idea how much I miss you when I’m gone. I love you guys so much!
xo

They’re Nike! Love them!!

I’m so grossed out by the gum wall! I don’t know if I could have put anything on it without touching other gum!
Heather says
Shay, do you know the style of your LV bag? It looks like the perfect bag for travel. Love the crossbody style and exterior pocket.

How do you manage cruising with kiddos who still need car seats? Do you bring them with you or can you rent them from the ship so when you get to the different ports you have a car seat?
Thanks!!
Jenna

On this trip, we never got into a vehicle at the ports. It was all walkable :).

I don’t know how you do it, but I LOVE it! All kiddos so happy and smiling. I love the love and Seattle has been on my list forever. Last year I made it to Portland and it’s basically my dream city, as I would imagine Seattle to be as well. I can’t wait to see the rest of your vacation pictures. XO

Sue Campbell says
Looks like a fun couple of days! Too bad you didn’t get to gorgeous Seattle on a sunny day.
Amber says
So fun to hear about the first part of your trip! We just did a Mexican riviera cruise this February with 16 members of my family and had a blast! We are talking abou an Alaskan cruise for our next all family adventure! I’m curious though about whether or not you hit a lot more choppy weather. Our last night we on our Mexican cruise we hit a bad storm and everyone was so motion sick and miserable. I’m just wondering if Alaska would be harder in terms of smooth sailing?
Mix and Match Mama says
We didn’t hit any storms but we had one night of choppy seas.
Sarah says
So glad you’re back! What a fun trip! In the photo at the gum wall, I think it’s your mom (pictured from behind) that has a backpack purse. If it’s her, could you let me know what brand? Thanks so much!
Darcy Sexson says
So fun! We live in Oregon, about 4 hours from Seattle and it’s always a favorite go to for girls weekends. 🙂 (The original Nordstrom is there too!) Looks like your family had a great time!
PS – we stay at the Hyatt House Seattle Downtown. They’re right under the Space Needle, have free parking for your vehicle and have a shuttle van that will take you all over downtown so you can leave your vehicle parked. In addition to Pike, and the Needle (which I’d recommend having brunch in the Needle restaurant, it’s delicious and includes the admission to the Needle), we like to hit up the Duck boat tours (guides are hilarious, and it’s a great way to see a lot of the city/water in a short time period) and have dinner or dessert/drinks at Tolouse Petite on Queen Anne Hill. For kids, the science museum is great too. Looking forward to hearing about the cruise! We want to go on one in the next two years so I’m excited to see your experience.
Melissa Sexton says
I love Seattle! Such a great city to explore! I’m sorry if you have covered this in a previous post, but do you fill your eyebrows in?
Mix and Match Mama says
Bobbi Brown brow gel 🙂
Heather says
Do you use the blonde? Or taupe? Or another shade? I have similar hair color and skin tone as you and your eyebrows always look great!
Mix and Match Mama says
Blonde!

Sounds so fun! Random question, but do you have any tips for sharing a hotel room with littles when you travel? We have a one year old and a three year old who both nap and go to bed relatively early (aka it’s still light outside). And it’s tricky to keep them from keeping each other up! Any tips or suggestions?? Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
We usually forgo naps in those situations. If they’re truly exhausted, they’ll go to sleep regardless of the room, but if they’re keyed up, we skip them!
Michelle N. says
We miss you too!

Amy Rae DeVito says
What a wonderful trip! I love the photo of Smith & Kensington pointing to Ashby on her birthday. It was so precious. And I love how in the second photo Madeley is pointing to Ashby in the one after that! So very precious and adorable and it melted my heart.
I went to the Caribbean for my college graduation with my two nephews (brother, sister-in-law, and my dad) and there’s nothing better than getting to spend quality time on a trip together. My nephew N, who was almost 4 at the time, loved going down the water slides with me (since he had to be accompanied by an adult). Vacations with family, just like any times with family, make such great memories to cherish and look back on.
I missed your posts while you were away but I am always excited to read your vacation recaps (as well as all of your other posts!) 🙂

Can you tell me about Andrew’s watch? My fiancé is a watch collector and wants an all gold watch but all the ones he’s found look grandpa-y. (Side note, if it’s automatic, I got Lane a watch winder for his birthday and he loves it because he doesn’t have to wind and reset if he goes a few days without wearing it.)

Oh, we missed you too! Even though I knew you were going to be absent for awhile, I pulled the blog up anyway-just because! My family did the Alaskan cruise a few years ago, too…so many of us that we wore matching shirts on the first day just so we could spot each other. Your trip practically mirrors ours so far. (Only our daughter turned 21 while cruising!) Can’t wait to read tomorrow’s post! I’m eager to hear which port was your favorite!
April says
I missed your blogs. So glad you had a good trip.
I’m jealous you got to go to the first Starbucks… lol?
Terry Pitzer says
Looks like an awesome trip! We enjoy traveling big, too. We treat our kids and grandkids to a family vacation every other year. We’ve always rented a house in Hilton Head, but decided to change things up this year. We took all 21 of us to Disney in January. Our kids grew up going there every 2 years with their cousins, and they wanted that for their kids too.
BTW, I love your scarf! Source please?
Janet Inman says
I was in Seattle at the same time you were. There were a few cruise ships docked that we were told were sailing to Alaska. Maybe it was yours! We were there visiting my son and daughter-in-law and attending University of Washington’s graduation. Who knows–we might have been at the same place together. We love visiting Pike Place and the gum wall. Isn’t it disgusting!? Ivar’s is also one of our go-to places while there.
I’m glad you had a great time on your cruise. Nothing better than traveling with a large group of people!
Can’t wait to hear more about it.
