Workin’ It Wednesdays: Weekends!

Workin' It Wednesdays

It’s Workin’ It Wednesday!

The second Wednesday of every month, Erika and I host a link up where we talk about how we’re workin’ it in certain areas of our life (and then ask you to share your advice/tips/tricks on the subject too).

So far this year, we’ve discussed these topics:

January: Keeping our New Year’s Goals
February: Keeping our marriages strong
March: Balancing work and home life
April: Spring cleaning
May: Planning/prepping for your summer vacation

and today…

A weekend in our life!

(Because clearly we knew our brains would be too fried/useless by this time in the summer that we didn’t a no-brainer topic 😉 .)

So, you guys know me…if it’s fall or Christmas, then my family is tracking down any festival/Oktoberfest/parade/fair/pumpkin patch within a 100 mile radius of our home to visit over the weekends.  I cannot get enough fall/Christmas cheer in my life.  #impossible  But…during the summer, our weekends are very different and VERY low-key.  So, here’s a little look at this last weekend.  I did an okay job taking pictures (I would forget and then remember and take a bunch and then forget again).  Who wishes it were the weekend right now?! ME!

We kicked off our Friday night with pizza on our town square with my parents and Samuel.  I have exactly zero pictures from that event. #imafailure

We typically don’t eat dinner with my parents on Friday nights, but Madeley had spent the night with them the night before and they were returning her, so we met for an early dinner.  After that, we drove home but it was only like 6:15…so we decided to change our clothes and go play golf!

Ah!  We love golfing!  We played the nine holes that has our old house on it.  We lived here for 7 years :).  This was the house where I brought home baby Kensington and baby Smith.  We have so many good memories here!

My big guy loves to golf!  He’s so much better than me! Ha!

Ashby couldn’t play because of her arm, but she was the cutest golf cart buddy.  She attempted to keep score…it was basically the score sheet with a million hearts drawn all over it.

We went home, showered, the kids watched a movie while Andrew and I watched House of Cards and then the big 3 slept in sleeping bags in our room.

The next morning, I was up and at ’em with my coffee and…

Pinterest.  I love pinning.  It’s my favorite form of social media.  I did work in my office until I smelled something delicious…

…and it was my sweet hubby making everyone his Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Pancakes.

I had a pancake with honey and strawberries.

At this point, Andrew took Smith to their deer lease to check on things and the girls were still sleeping, so I…

…went to go use our stairmill and then do a little yoga outside (I love yoga outside!).

At 9:15, I went upstairs and this one woke up!  This was her first morning to wake up in her big girl bed!!  She had asked to go to sleep earlier the night before, so she slept on the bottom bunk for the first time!

Andrew and Smith came home around 11:30 and we headed to lunch at our country club.  Love these girls!

For some weird reason, we were the only ones in there at this time, so Smith played with his pocket racer.  Do you know what those are?  They’re little cars that go in your pocket along with a little thing to charge them that is also the remote.  My mom bought him one for his birthday in January and he basically always has it in his pocket.

I love this guy!   And yes…I had my swimsuit under my clothes.  I wanted to be prepared for later in the day 😉 .

This girl couldn’t wait to eat her breakfast burrito!

Those two are sweet together 🙂 .

After lunch, we went to Trader Joe’s.

And then we came home and while the younger two napped, we swam!  (Ashby can’t swim because of her arm at this point, so it was good timing!)

And then it started raining…

…but then they decided a little rain made swimming more fun!  (That’s air guitar he’s playing.  Ha!)

I didn’t want to swim in the rain, so I read while I watched…

…and then when it stopped raining, I jumped in too!

Around 4:30, we got everyone dressed and decided to drive to Dallas for dinner.

Mexican food with my fam!

(Wearing that same old dress that I love so much with those fun pink earrings!)

The other side of the table 🙂 .

After dinner, we walked around Highland Park Village (where the restaurant is located) because the weather had cooled off and it was so nice outside!

Behind all my people.

On the way home, we stopped at Pokey O’s for ice cream!

The next morning, we got up and headed to church.  I love the Bible app on my phone.  This was the verse for the day…

Wow.  I could write a whole post on just this verse.

We were early to church (I don’t know how?  We’re either 10 minutes late or 15 minutes early.  It’s a mystery to me!)  The big kids came with me to my class as I got my food out for the day (I bring my class food every Sunday morning).   My dress is HERE.

After church, my family ate lunch, went and picked up our groceries (I had done the online grocery ordering) and then Erika and I went to Starbucks to meet a friend who was in town.

After that, I came home and found this munchkin on the floor watching a Barbie movie.

While I was making dinner that night…this girl walked in.  I mean…it’s never dull with Madeley James around.

We ate dinner, everyone took showers and then Andrew made his homemade ice cream before bed.

Whew!  That is a summer weekend with the Shull family!

Next month, our topic is getting geared for back to school (say it ain’t so!) and then coming up this year…

The fact that you get such a huge field to play golf in makes me so envious. I’ve never played golf – except mini-golf while on vacation, and that’s only once – because Hong Kong doesn’t have enough green space for the sport. It looks so fun, glad the kids got to experience the activity!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 12, 2017 at 5:26 am

A place you rent and prep all year for hunting season (basically, a big piece of land).

  • Cori Baird July 12, 2017 at 5:13 am

Do you have a favorite at home yoga app/routine/utube you love?

    • Mix and Match Mama July 12, 2017 at 5:25 am

      Yes! Kristen McGee!!

  • Bethany July 12, 2017 at 5:35 am

Isn’t it weird when you are in a restaurant all alone? What are those shoes in the workout picture?

  • Elspeth Mizner July 12, 2017 at 5:42 am

Love this! Such a fun and relaxing weekend. Have you started the new season of House of Cards? I would love your opinion on it. I’m in the middle of the season and I’m hooked!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 12, 2017 at 5:55 am

I only have two episodes left! I love it…but you have to pay attention because they are so many references to previous seasons.

      • Elspeth Mizner July 12, 2017 at 6:06 am

Yes! I completely agree! If you don’t pay attention you could miss something huge!!!

  • Erika Slaughter July 12, 2017 at 5:53 am

You did a great job remembering to take pictures!! I could not remember!! But this weekend you documented looks great…swimming, Mexican, and reading are all my faves.

  • Francie July 12, 2017 at 6:00 am

Such an exciting weekend, love your family pics!

  • Kelsey Dunn July 12, 2017 at 6:04 am

Good Morning! I noticed your Le Crueset Dutch oven and tea kettle in the background of the picture of Andrew with his pancakes. I’m getting married in February and we are registering for Le Crueset Dutch oven, soup pot, and kettle and I’m wondering if you could share the colors you have and if you feel like your white kettle gets dirty? We want white, but I’m afraid it will look dirty/darker over time! Thank you so much, Shay!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 12, 2017 at 6:05 am

My kettle is actually like a French blue (it must be the lighting) and I love it! I do have a matte white dutch oven as well and it still looks great!

  • Beth July 12, 2017 at 6:30 am

A fun yet relaxing weekend with your kids! I love how you give them down time and then things to do, so you keep changing things up, so they don’t get bored. Do you typically wear your Apple watch while swimming? I’m so nervous that I’ve never worn mine in.

    • Mix and Match Mama July 12, 2017 at 7:01 am

I have the Apple Watch 2 and wear it in the water all the time!!!

      • Eryn July 12, 2017 at 9:31 am

I was going to ask the same question! Mine is the original watch and I don’t think it’s waterproof!

        • Mix and Match Mama July 12, 2017 at 11:11 am

The 1 is not waterproof, but the 2 is!

      • Beth July 12, 2017 at 5:11 pm

Thanks so much! Mine is the 2, but I’m such a scaredy cat to get it wet!

  • Heather Bramlett July 12, 2017 at 6:31 am

What a great weekend! Swimming, Mexican, and Golf! My 12 year old plays ALL the time! We have a junior golf league that he plays tournaments in!

  • Sheaffer Sims July 12, 2017 at 6:33 am

What a fun little weekend! Madeley is such a little ham! Your topic next month makes me have anxiety. #boo

  • Tracy July 12, 2017 at 6:34 am

What kinds of food do you take to church? I’m on a rotating schedule for church breakfast and need some fresh ideas! Also, have you shared Andrew’s ice cream recipe? I haven’t loved any that I’ve tried so far. I need a good one!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 12, 2017 at 7:01 am

I take a ton of food that I’ve made for my blog!! A lot of breakfast casseroles, small bites (sausage balls, pig in a blanket), breads/bars/etc and more! Check my Food tab across the top and then click breakfast on the right hand side!

  • Allison July 12, 2017 at 6:46 am

Hi Shay! Some time could you share tips on how you keep your kids safe around your pool? Thanks!!

  • Narci Dreffs July 12, 2017 at 6:56 am

What a fun weekend! It looks you guys had a blast!

  • Billie July 12, 2017 at 7:06 am

I just started following you and love you and your precious family! Next week my family and extended family leave for Seattle and Alaskan Cruise–what was your Seattle favorite?

    • Mix and Match Mama July 12, 2017 at 7:12 am

My kids loved the day where we went to the Space Needle, ferris wheel and aquarium!

    • Priscilla July 12, 2017 at 10:30 am

When we went to the Space Needle, we made reservations and at lunch there. My kids loved it. The prices were not that expensive for lunch.

  • Danielle Kirchner July 12, 2017 at 7:08 am

What?! Madeley sleeps until 9:15?! That would be glorious!!!

  • Kim July 12, 2017 at 7:10 am

  • C July 12, 2017 at 7:36 am

Hi Shay – what Bible app do you use? Thank you 🙂

  • Jen July 12, 2017 at 7:36 am

Hi Shay! Such great ideas!! Ok your Apple Watch, I know you can change the band but what color of face did you get? Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 12, 2017 at 11:14 am

      It’s rose gold!

  • Megan July 12, 2017 at 7:38 am

My oldest is also better than me in golf and has a pocket racer on his birthday wish list. We head back to school in 15 days! How has summer gone by so quickly??

  • Angelique July 12, 2017 at 7:55 am

For a lazy weekend, you guys were pretty busy! I’d love to hear what your favorite Trader Joe’s finds are. I feel like we all have a couple things we can’t live without there. My favorite is the Parsnip Chips. They are low carb and make me feel a little better about eating a ton of them. 😉

  • Mindy Tierney July 12, 2017 at 8:19 am

Can you post how to make homemade ice cream. We have an old ice cream maker. My daughter is 12 and I honestly don’t know if it had been used since she was born. It was a wedding present back in 2002! I don’t know where to begin with it. Simple vanilla with M&M’s would even work for us! Any pointers would be great.

    Happy Wednesday.

  • Tanya July 12, 2017 at 8:22 am

This is my first ever reply to a post but I wanted to share that My morning isn’t complete until I read ur posts. Every morning at 7am I’m up walking the dog before work so when ur posts come in around 6:40 it’s perfect time for me to read and get my day started.
My Question is, is your Apple Watch waterproof? I see you have it on while in the pool.
Thanks for all the time to write your posts and share your life.

  • Wendy O. July 12, 2017 at 9:14 am

  • Michelle July 12, 2017 at 9:28 am

I have a question… I’ve heard mixed reviews on using the griddle that is part of the stove. Is it hard to clean? Besides pancakes, what other things do you make on it? Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 12, 2017 at 11:12 am

We use it for chicken, shrimp, fish…everything! I do not find it hard to clean as long as you clean it when it’s still hot.

  • Abby July 12, 2017 at 9:31 am

Looks like an amazing weekend to me! Where are your navy wedges from? I noticed them in the picture with Ashby laying on the floor.

Santa brought them Pottery Barn Kids sleeping bags (the furry animal ones) a few years ago and YES, they love them!!

  • Monica July 12, 2017 at 12:27 pm

Thank you for dressing your girls in MJ. It helps me form my defense with my husband that I’m not the only person around that orders from every release! 🙈💸💸💸

  • Angela July 12, 2017 at 12:45 pm

Yoga outside sounds fun. I’ll have to try that some time. I wish we had a Trader Joes near where I live, but the nearest one is several hours away.

  • angela shields July 12, 2017 at 1:12 pm

We have a pool too but I seemed to avoid it because of the chlorine in my color treated blonde hair. I use and love the shampoo and conditioner that you recommended (Moroccanoil). Do you do anything else to your hair when you have been swimming to get the chlorine out? Do you have a sunscreen that you love too? Thank you Shay!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 13, 2017 at 5:46 am

Yes!!! That happens to me all the time if I’m not careful! My best tip is to put conditioner in my hair (wet or dry) before I get in the water.

  • Emma Schroeter July 12, 2017 at 1:36 pm

Can you do an updated post on your Apple Watch and how you style it (with different bands, other jewelry, etc.)?

  • April July 12, 2017 at 1:46 pm

    I love House of Cards.

  • Whitney Pegram July 12, 2017 at 2:07 pm

I’ve been reading through the book of Proverbs & LOVE that verse!! Looks like y’all had such a fun weekend!

  • Ashley July 12, 2017 at 5:00 pm

Would love an update on Ashbys arm! You have such a great platform to make a positive influence on this community.

Also, when did you make your food for your church group? You had such a busy day on Saturday!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 13, 2017 at 5:45 am

I made it on Saturday morning after I did yoga but before we went to lunch :).

  • Tina July 12, 2017 at 5:22 pm

My son has asked for a pocket racer for his 7th birthday coming up. Based on the amazon reviews, I’ve been hesitant to purchase one…but it’s the only thing he’s asked for!😕 I’m glad to see that Smith has been playing with his since January! So many reviews said they don’t last.

    • Mix and Match Mama July 13, 2017 at 5:45 am

      Smith has loved his!!!

  • Erin Port July 12, 2017 at 6:57 pm

What a fun weekend and yay for a little girl coffee time on a Sunday afternoon :). M looks so excited to be in her big girl bed! xoxo ERIN

  • Alice July 12, 2017 at 8:01 pm

What time do your kids go to bed and wake up? Do you stick to the same sleep schedule in summer as during school? At what age did they stop napping?

    • Mix and Match Mama July 13, 2017 at 5:44 am

In the summer it varies more. I try to go to the gym twice a week which means they wake up at 7:00…on the other days, they sleep as long as they want. They go to bed later during the summer too (closer to 9:00). They all stopped napping when they got to Pre=K which means Miss Ashby is almost done with naps!

  • Shan Rocha July 12, 2017 at 9:58 pm

Completely off topic but wondering if you have any dining recommendations while in and around Disney world? I hate that I couldn’t use your services to plan out our Florida trip (being from Canada)…. have you guys visited Legoland Florida? Just wondering if it’s worth the trip ! TIA!

    • Mix and Match Mama July 13, 2017 at 5:42 am

So many! Chef Mickey’s, Akershus, Crystal Palace, Cinderella’s Royal Table 1900 Park Fare!

  • Sarah July 12, 2017 at 11:27 pm

You look so pretty in that picture with Ashby. And Kensington looks so grown up in the picture by the pool.

  • Justyna July 13, 2017 at 2:09 am

    Hi Shay!
Off topic but—I have a (monthly) friends dinner club on Tuesday. Our theme is “summer fruit”- I can make anything…entree, app, dessert as long as it has some fruit spin on it. Any recommendations from your recipes????
This is an afterwork event so I have to prep night before 🙁

P.s someone is already making watermelon and feta salad.

    • Mix and Match Mama July 13, 2017 at 5:42 am

My first thought was my Watermelon Cupcakes :).

  • Erica Werner July 13, 2017 at 12:12 pm

  • Meg July 15, 2017 at 1:14 am

Where is Smiths suit from? My son would love it 😉

    • Mix and Match Mama July 15, 2017 at 5:30 am

      I believe that’s Old Navy!

  • Nicole July 16, 2017 at 9:43 pm

Do you work out most Saturday mornings?

    • Mix and Match Mama July 17, 2017 at 4:43 am

No! Sometimes, but more often than not, I don’t.

  • Aparna July 17, 2017 at 4:11 am

Wonderful weekend! Love reading about your family shay!

  • Detroit Duchess July 27, 2017 at 4:05 pm

My husband and I just finished the first season of House of Cards – it is like Scandal on steroids! I just downloaded the Bible App and have started the One Year Bible. I am so surprised at everything I am learning. I really haven’t read the Bible like this since I was a teenager and seeing it as an adult I have a much different perspective. That picture of Madeley is cracking me up! Definitely one to be framed.
