Have Yourself a Merry Little Weekend!

Well, ’tis the season for lots of holiday cheer all weekend long!

On Friday afternoon, we surprised the kids with ice skating after school followed by dinner and lights.  On Saturday? We were supposed to have the McKinney Light Parade, but due to weather, it was cancelled.  No worries, we still hit the town and had so much fun!  Scroll below to see!

Happy Monday, everyone!

These two girls were so pumped to get to ice skate!!  We took them to the Dallas Galleria for skating which was a good thing because it was cold and rainy outside.

Our elf left them all gum that morning…hence gum in every.single.picture.  Ashby had it stored in the interior pocket of her jacket.  Hahaha!

This one had no interest in skating.  “I fall down” she said.  Yeah, Madeley.  Me too.  I fall down when I skate too.

Our four skaters about to take the ice!

The cheering section 🙂 .

Never dull with this one.

Off they went!  My bigs are independent skaters…

…sweet Ashby is still learning and since she cannot fall down (like that would be the absolute worst thing for her), her daddy helped her around until she said she was done.

She was so proud when she got off the ice!  She was like “Mom, I did so great at the end!”. Ah!

The Galleria is hit or miss. Sometimes, it’s SUPER crowded and then this last time, there was hardly anyone there.

They had so much fun skating, and Madeley and I had so much fun watching.

After their skate…

…we stopped for them to get a cookie.

We love cookies 🙂 .

After this, we walked around the Galleria a bit and then headed down the road to our very favorite spot in Dallas…Highland Park Village…

…it was so cold and raining, so I didn’t take a lot of pics outside, but HPV is GORGEOUS during the holidays!  We ate yummy Mexican food and then drove around looking at lights.

See all the lights back there?!

She was mad because she wasn’t sitting close enough to me.  Hahahaha!  Any closer and she would have been in my lap!  This girl LOVES her mama, and sitting right up next to me during a meal is one of her faves.  But seriously…she was sitting right.next.to.me and wanted to be even closer.

All bundled up outside before we left to look at the gorgeous lights!

On Saturday night, we had big plans to see the annual McKinney Light Parade, but unfortunately due to weather, it was cancelled.  However, that didn’t stop us from having loads of fun!  My parents decided to brave the weather and head our way.  We went to the square all bundled up and made our own magic.  First stop, Sugarbacon for dinner…

Ashby had her own ugly sweater on from Target 🙂 .  She was so happy about it!  We had a really yummy dinner, then dressed warm, grabbed umbrellas and walked the square (it might have been raining and cold, but it was still festive!)…

This girl in her Boston gear.  I’m so proud 😉 .

My parents are always up for anything!

These two were excited to have their own umbrellas for our stroll.

Of course, we stopped at Mom & Popcorn for some candy!

Our cheeks are nice and rosy and comfy cozy are we!

We had such a fun night!

That’s a little look into our weekend!  I hope your weekend was fun and festive too!! xo

How do you decide what activities you allow Ashby to participate in vs ones she has to sit out of? With her not being able to fall, I can imagine it’s a tough call sometimes. Like with ice skating, it’s so awesome that Andrew can help her and make sure she doesn’t fall on her own, but isn’t there still a risk someone could accidentally hit them? I hope you don’t take offense to my question, I’m just genuinely curious as to how you weigh your decisions 🙂

    • Mix and Match Mama December 10, 2018 at 11:55 am

It’s super tough! Ashby has two main doctors and they both always encourage us to let her be little and enjoy now because Ashby’s condition gets more severe the older she gets, so we try and keep that in mind. There is a balance. For ice skating, we decided that since it wasn’t crowded and Andrew is a pretty good skater, that this was something we were going to let her do. She was unable to attend a friend’s birthday party a few weekends ago because it was at a trampoline park…so, it goes both ways for her. Little bits of fun stuff like this really make Ashby happy (and like “one of the big kids”), so when we can, we really try and let her participate safely.

I love reading your blog all year, but especially at Christmas time as it reminds me so much of when my kids were really little and we had all the time in the world to “do Christmas”. I can tell you are soaking it up and that is wonderful! I have high schooler, a late middle schooler and a college student now and it is special for different reasons, but their own lives are so busy with schoolwork, friends, sports, theatre, not even being in the same state (sob!) that the daily Christmas activities are not possible. As a mom I really miss it and tend to try to cram as much as possible into the few days post finals/pre-Christmas. Luckily my kids humor me and are game. You regularly comment that you know this time is fleeting so I know you are aware, so enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!! Every season is lovely, but the years when they believe and love all the wonder of the season are so precious. Please keep posting! You have a ton of readers, but a least one very nostalgic reader in California eating it up.

    hi shay!!!

love your blog and all your holiday posts. reminds me of when my kids were little.

i love all your makeup and hair posts, but i’m wondering if maybe you could get your mom to show us all of her favorite face products? she looks so beautiful and her skin is just amazing!

    happy holidays!

hi shay!! love your holiday posts. they remind me of when my kids were little.
i especially love your favorite face and hair post. do you think your mom would ever do a post about her face routine?
she has the loveliest skin and of course her inner beauty shines through. thanks.

    • Mix and Match Mama December 10, 2018 at 11:51 am

Ah! I can always ask her!!

  • Leanne Gilchrist December 10, 2018 at 10:35 am

Wow! I’ve got so much to say about this post! I’ll try to be super brief! Kensington! Her poses! She reminds me of Liv from Liv and Maddie! She so bright and shining and SO FUN! That red sweater on you, it looks gorgeous. Ashby is such a living, walking testimony of brave! I love her proud face after she got done skating! Your town is so sweet and pretty and lovely right now. Why is it that the umbrella is such an awesome thing for kids? My two little girls, Lucie and Pennie Jane, they’d play with the umbrella for keeps! Lol, cheap fun! It’s so fun because you’ve got the 3 girls, in all their glam and girlie-ness and fashionista fun, and then, Smith, he’s all guy! LOL! The picture of him and Kensington in the candy store, and he’s just standing there with the biggest smile on his face, it’s great. And Madeley? She makes me squeal and smile and sigh. Okay, that’s it, that wasn’t very brief, but thanks, Shay, for letting us in on your special weekend!

I completely understand if you don’t want to answer this question & totally respect that. As a kindergarten teacher I’m curious how you handle recess for sweet Ashby? I’m always looking for creative/fun things for those with restrictions to do that makes them feel apart too.

    • Mix and Match Mama December 10, 2018 at 11:51 am

I think that’s a super great question! We had a meeting the very first week of school to set restrictions/expectations with Ashby’s teachers and Ashby. The school nurse even spoke with one of Ashby’s surgeons on the phone for clarity and information. Ashby knows what she can and cannot do at recess. For instance, she can swing, but she cannot attempt the monkey bars (things like that). When I ask her what she did every day, she almost always says “played” with some of the other girls. I think they play school/house/etc instead of actually using the equipment.

You are so great about making memories with your kids! I love it. You also make me want to go see ALL the DFW neighborhoods! lol

  • Sandra Knight December 10, 2018 at 11:56 am

I went to the McKinney square on Saturday. We were visiting my husbands aunt and I said I must go there since you talk so much about it! It was raining and took forever to find a parking spot but I did get to go to the candy store and I got the McKinney mix popcorn and now I’m kicking myself for not buying more!

  • christina December 10, 2018 at 12:29 pm

Here’s my fun fact about the Dallas Galleria: when Kristi Yamaguchi won the gold medal in the Olympics in 1992, she came and performed at the Dallas Galleria. My sisters and I were mildly obsessed with figure skating, so my mom and her best friend took all the kids over there in the early afternoon to wait to see her that night. We had front row “seats” and it was so AWESOME!
