Today’s post is all about Smith.
I do so many posts on the little two girls because of adoption and health stuff, so from time to time, I like to post about just the bigs. Last month, I posted all about Kensington and today, it’s all about my boy.
This year, Smith is in second grade, and he just turned 8 in January.
Smith is the kid that I just don’t have to worry about.
My sweet girls all give me something to worry about from time to time…but not this kid. He’s just always fine. He is always so happy, cheerful, focused, funny, reliable, dependable, and easy going. He bounces from school to sports to violin to friends to homework all without a fuss. He is just easy.
Smith is everyone’s favorite at our house. All three girls want to play with him, they want to go outside with him, they want to sit with him on the couch…he’s Mr. Popular at the Shull house. He’s also the mediator. When the girls are bickering over toys, what they’re playing, etc…Smith can typically swoop in and sort it all out.
Smith really likes a challenge. Last year, he wanted to start learning how to play the violin and this year, he wanted to learn how to snowboard. He just really likes to get in there and learn something new.
Random/funny things about Smith:
1. I still carry him to breakfast every morning. Which is ridiculous, I know, but he always asks me and I know there will come a day when he stops, so I’m going to keep doing it until he does.
2. He’s funny. This kid has a very mature wit that always catches me off guard. He makes me laugh all the time!
3. Right now, he’s reading Where the Red Fern Grows. He loves it! He hasn’t gotten to the end yet 😉 .
4. Smith’s favorite meal is anything with shrimp and/or pasta. He likes poultry too and steak, but ground beef is not his favorite (and since the other five of us love ground beef, he eats it a lot for dinner). The other night, he asked me what was for dinner and I described it to him (a ground beef dish) and he said, “Yum, that sounds so good. What am I having?”. Ha! See? He’s funny 🙂 .
5. Smith is such a good big brother! Both of the little girls are obsessed with him…and he loves it.
Clearly this kid isn’t perfect (because, who is?!), but he’s perfect for us. When Smith walks into a room, it makes things better, easier. Oh sure, he also shoots me with Nerf darts, puts rubber snakes under the kitchen sink, I found his toothbrush laying on the rug the other day (how the heck did it go from his bathroom to the downstairs rug???), he threw Poppy’s stuffed animal up to the ceiling beam the other day where it sat for about a week and he notoriously gets all the way to school in the back of the car only to realize once it’s time to jump out that he’s not wearing shoes (YES!), but this kid is a rockstar at our house.
We have one boy…and he sure is a special one 🙂 .

Smith sounds like the perfect brother, and it’s obvious his sisters think so too! It can’t be easy being the only boy, hah! 🙂

I love that he wants you to carry him to breakfast! So sweet. He’s going to be an amazing husband after having all those sisters!
AngieN says
When you say “carry him to breakfast”, do you mean pick him up and carry him down to the table? If so, I am right there with you!! I carried my son until I couldn’t pick him up any more and now I do the same with my 4 year old grandson! If he says, “Hold you, Nonny!” (He still says it that way, too) I am going to do it because I know it won’t last forever! Love that you do it 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! Like down the stairs and to his spot at the bar. Why? Even Madeley walks down by herself. Hahahahaha!
Elspeth Mizner says
Love these updates on your kiddos!! Is he more like Andrew or you personality wise?
Mix and Match Mama says
He’s totally like Andrew in the personality department 🙂 .
Sheaffer Sims says
I just stopped carrying Carter downstairs (he’s too long for me to do it now without fear of falling down the stairs), and it makes me want to bawl. You keep carrying that boy!
Kristen says
I still carry my 8 yr old daughter down to breakfast every am. I’m only 5ft and her feet are dragging but I wouldn’t give it up for the world.

I have a wonderful boy too! He was such an uncomplicated kid between two sisters, so easy-going and fun. He’s now 29 and still has that unflappable personality…he’s an engineer. In my family we think boys are awesome! (And so are the girls?)
Kara says
LOVE that he had no shoes on when he got to school! I’m sure it was frustrating in the moment but those are the things that one day you’ll look back on, shake your head, and laugh! I’m so glad you can see all the other positive things about your boy and share them with the world and not just his “negative” qualities! Way to go mama ? I have a 16 month old girl and a little boy on the way. Please keep sharing your family stories, they’re so inspiring.

I have 4 girls and 1boy!! Those boys are just a breath of fresh air sometimes!! They do tend to not get caught up in the house drama!! They do drive you crazy in other ways though….my son can get to school without his back pack….buddy really???? And the balls ? ? ⚾️ ⚽️…..always have them with them or throwing them….always!!!
Becky says
It made me smile when you said you still carry him!!!❤️❤️❤️ Mama’s and their boys!!
Nicole says
This may be THE BEST post of yours that I ever read (and I LOVE them all). BUT this was great. Made my day! I would take a little boy like him in a heartbeat…and do it all alone as a single mom too (and that’s saying A LOT coming from a child-free person…never would I want to be a single mom…but for this fun kind of boy…I’d do it in a heart beat). YOU ARE VERY LUCKY…and so is he having YOU and YOUR FAMILY! MUCH LOVE!
Debbie K says
You just keep carrying your boy… I held mine on my lap and rocked him until one day I didn’t… it goes so fast. You just don’t know when that last time will come. He would look at me and I would say,”Do you just need some Mom time?” He would shake his head and we would snuggle in the rocker. He is now almost 22 and I cherish those times.
Bri says
Hahaha! His dinner comment is hilarious, but the no shoes thing is what really made me LOL.
Melissa says
All those pictures of him are just the cutest! It’s easy to see why he’s the girls’ favorite : )

Totally carry my boy to breakfast every morning! I love it as much as he does. He’s already (at 5!) at the point that he won’t do many kisses in front of people. I’ll take NY free snuggles I can get!

Sweet Smith!! I try to pick up Mason all the time too. Most of the time he thinks it’s funny to just go limp though so I’m trying to lift dead weight. He doesn’t understand that Mama needs this!! He’s my last baby. I need him to cooperate. 😉 That Inspired Chick

What a sweet, witty, and precious young man you’ve got. Sounds like he’s really going places in life too. My sweet boy turned 18 today, so don’t blink!! Enjoy every moment with him and each morning that you can still carry him to breakfast?

I love your stories about Smith. I have three boys and they’re all grown up now. You are right to cherish every moment because they will be gone even faster than you can imagine. Reading your stories brings back so many memories. You are right that Smith has a very witty humor. Your stories made me laugh and then made me cry because it reminded me of one of my favorite children’s books Love You Forever. If you haven’t read it yet, I think you will love it.
Kristy Moore says
Never met him, probably never will, but seriously love this kid.

Nothing like those sweet boys!!! My son is off at college but we still talk or text everyday !!!
Ok if he likes Where the Fern Grows (and is not too traumatized by the ending LOL) have him read Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls. Another great book!
Kirsten J says
Smith is an amazing guy! And. When I was in elementary school (4th grade? 5th? Way back in 1970 or so) our class read Where the Red Fern Grows. And the author Wilson Rawls came to our school.
Kelly says
When you have a “larger” family (we have 6 children), it’s just a gift from God to have one of them be the “easy” one. Love this post about your boy. May he always want his momma to carry him and have the gift of making you laugh;).
Whitney Pegram says
Boys ARE easy!! Cooper just turned 8 & he’s always been so stinkin’ chill!
