Well, today is the day.

The day we have been counting down to since like October.

Today…is Frenchie’s birthday

When your mom is a nine year old, these things take priority in life.

So, since today is an all-consuming Frenchie day at our house, I thought it was the perfect time to take a minute and give you an update on our newest furry family member.

We are all in love with Frenchie Macaroon.  Even Smith (who likes to pretend he’s not a fan because it’s “Kensington’s dog”).   She has slid right on in as another Shull in our house.

That being said, Frenchie is 100% a mama’s girl.  I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous about handing a nine year old a dog to take care of, but she has done an amazing job!

There were growing pains, of course!

“I have to clean up her poop?!”

“I have to walk her even when it’s raining/hot/cold/I just don’t want to?”

“I have to chase her down the sidewalk when she goes after a rabbit?”

Having a dog to call her own has really matured Kensington and helped her grow in areas where she needed a little push.  Having to remember to feed a dog, bathe a dog, walk a dog, clean out her crate, pick up her poop and everything else has made her more responsible and I think more aware of what it takes to care for people (and pets) around here.

Now, the weirdest thing to me about getting a second dog has been how much easier I think it is than having only one.

My mom is shaking her head and disagreeing right now.  Ha!  But truly, having two just seems easier than having the one.  Poppy seems so much happier and more content now that she has a friend.  They play, they wear each other out, they lie down next to each other and rest…they’re two peas in a pod.  I can’t imagine us ever being “one dog” people again.

Frenchie has been fun for the whole family!  Here are a few Frenchie facts:

  1. Poppy is the alpha dog and she’s okay with that.  She takes her cues and commands from the senior dog including letting Poppy enter the house before her, letting Poppy decide when they’ve had enough time in the yard and it’s time to walk back up to the porch and if Frenchie has a toy and Poppy wants it, she happily pushes it her way.
  2. She loves sleeping in her crate!  Poppy sleeps in a dog bed next to my side of the bed, but Frenchie heads on into her crate every evening around 9 and stays there until 7:00ish.  Poppy wakes when we wake and follows us around, but Frenchie enjoys her sleep.
  3. Frenchie doesn’t bark.  Poppy is super friendly, gets overly excited, loves to know what’s going on/who’s in our house/who’s at the door/had LOADS of energy where Frenchie just sits back and doesn’t care much.  She’s not the dog who barks, who gets overly excited and rambunctious…she lets Poppy do all that work while she chills.
  4. She’s a year old now, but still a little thing.  Poppy weighs around 10 pounds where Frenchie only about six.  She’s all fluffy fur 🙂 .
  5. Frenchie loves to cuddle!  Poppy wants to sit by me  Right this very second as I type, Poppy is asleep at my desk chair.  When I move into the kitchen, she’ll follow and sleep on the kitchen rug.  Frenchie though wants to sit in your lap.  She is a true lap dog and prefers that seat to any other.

The relationship she has with Ashby has been especially surprising.  We had no idea how much Ashby would love taking care of a puppy.  In all the ways it matured Kensington, I think it really spoke to Ashby’s heart too.  Kensington is the mama…but Ashby is a close second.  Whenever Frenchie wakes up in the morning, I have to shut her in my office with me or else she runs right up to Kensington and Ashby and whines until they wake up.  And when they’re not home?  She sleeps in Kensington’s room.  Poppy always sleeps in my office with me while I’m home and the kids are at school, but Frenchie?  She sleeps upstairs under K’s desk.

Happy 1st birthday, Frenchie!  We all love you so much!

I agree that two dogs are better than one! Our Wrigley is alpha here. She is a 12 pound Morkie. Penny Lane is a 4 pound Yorkie. They are inseparable. We had a bump in the road when Penny decided she wanted to be alpha, but they worked it out and all is well. Happy birthday Frenchie!

Those puppy’s are adorable! And I love hearing about how it has helped Kensington and Ashby mature. My 7 year old son says he wants a dog, I am thinking that we are still a couple of years away from that. But, it is nice to hear how it has been for other kiddos/families. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a great day of celebrating!

  • Ramona August 16, 2018 at 5:26 am

Precious ! We were surprised at how much we enjoyed being a two dog family , also. When it is dinner time , they sit together and stare , and look like quotation marks – ha!

Thanks for sharing – it is fun to see how dogs live with and bless other families 🙂

Happy Birthday Frenchie! The photo of your whole family where Kensington is holding Frenchie, Frenchie looks like she’s smiling! Also, the last photo of Kensington with Frenchie melted my heart…it is just so sweet!!!

Happy Birthday, Frenchie! Where did you get her white dog pen from?

    • Mix and Match Mama August 16, 2018 at 7:41 am

      I think Amazon!

  • Amy August 16, 2018 at 7:40 am

So many sweet pictures!! Trying to convince my husband to get a second dog. How old is Poppy?

    • Mix and Match Mama August 16, 2018 at 7:40 am

      She’s six!

  • Rebecca Jo August 16, 2018 at 7:44 am

Ahhh – Happy Birthday Frenchie! I cant believe its been nearly a year since you got her.
I totally agree – having more than one isn’t a problem once you have one well trained dog. They teach the other dog. Its why we have 4 – I always say, I could have 6 dogs & be totally content with that – they take care of each other.

  • Em August 16, 2018 at 7:48 am

Do you have a fenced in yard? Where do the dogs stay when you travel? Both your puppies are adorable!! I have a one year old Havanese and he changed our lives!

    • Mix and Match Mama August 16, 2018 at 8:25 am

We do! And we’ve been using the app Rover! It’s amazing for finding people to watch your pets while you’re away!

  • Kristine W August 16, 2018 at 7:55 am

We are a family of 3 Boston Terriers. We just added the 3rd in May. Adopted a 8.5 yr old sweet guy. I have had 3 before and it is actually easier at times for me. Someone always has a friend at home when one goes to the vet etc. I used to take them both so one would not be sad. My oldest will be 11 tomorrow 😭. Happy Birthday Frenchie!!

  • Laci August 16, 2018 at 8:02 am

    Happy Birthday Frenchie

  • Andrea August 16, 2018 at 8:08 am

Oh, she’s so cute!! Happy Birthday Frenchie🐶🎉🎈

  • mary August 16, 2018 at 8:16 am

I was always under the impression from your blog that Poppy was Andrew’s dog and no one else was really that into Poppy, but I love this blog! I love hearing how much Poppy is thriving having a sister. They are the cutest!

    • Mix and Match Mama August 16, 2018 at 8:25 am

Poppy is Andrew’s dog…but she likes me more. Hahaha!

  • Anna Jones August 16, 2018 at 8:38 am

Frenchie seems like the perfect little puppy!! I think it’s so sweet how obsessed she is with Kensington. Sleeping under her desk and on her bed when she’s not home is just precious!

  • Kellie Liso August 16, 2018 at 8:59 am

Happy Birthday Frenchie! Pretty amazing how a pet can enrich your life in more ways than you ever imagine! But does this make you a “pet grandma?” Hahaha

  • Danielle August 16, 2018 at 9:00 am

We just got a Coton! I had never heard of them until your blog, but found a breeder after reading about Frenchie and Poppy. She is so sweet and wants to be right next to us ALL the time.

  • Kathy August 16, 2018 at 9:15 am

She is such a beautiful dog! What is her breed?

  • Angela Ellingson August 16, 2018 at 9:21 am

So sweet! Those pictures of K in the backyard with Frenchie are so adorable!

  • WhittyWife August 16, 2018 at 9:35 am

I so agree with you on two dogs being easier than one! We have 3, and while they’re all super affectionate and love being with us, they also amuse each other. They’ll run up to their room (yes, they have their own bedroom – haha!) and play together whenever we’re busy. I love what a sweet little mama K is. Great idea using this to help grow her! ❤

  • Kay August 16, 2018 at 9:42 am

Okay, did Frenchie have brown spots on her face as a puppy that are now white?! My extended family has two dogs of this breed, so I’m super curious!

    • Mix and Match Mama August 16, 2018 at 12:52 pm

Yup! Champagne spots stay on Cotons but the other colors fade to white.

  • Ariadna August 16, 2018 at 9:52 am

Such a sweet post! Happy Birthday Frenchie! We used to be a two dog family but we lost our furry love Rocky last November, so now we’re a one dog family. I thought we would get another dog around 6 months but I don’t know if it’s because we can’t see ourselves “replacing” Rocky, or if it’s because we’re really enjoying our one dog right now. Was there anything specific that you guys did when you first introduced Frenchie to Poppy to create such a sweet doggie relationship?

    • Mix and Match Mama August 16, 2018 at 12:52 pm

We really made sure Poppy was good with having another dog in our yard, around our house and stuff. We let her play a lot with the neighbor’s dog and she ate it up! She also loves playing with Andrew’s brother’s dog too. Our first dog, Tulip, hated other dogs. We could just tell Poppy was happy to be with other dogs too.

  • Anna S August 16, 2018 at 9:55 am

Kensington seems like a great dog-mom. 🙂 It makes me feel good knowing that you think two dogs are easier than one! We plan to have two Australian shepherds after we get married. 🙂

  • Alison Trauger August 16, 2018 at 9:57 am

Ohhh, that last photo of Kensington and Frenchie is simply adorable! A little lady and her puppy. 🙂

  • Amanda Wilson August 16, 2018 at 10:45 am

Love this!!! I would be so proud of Kensington because that could have went the other way with constant fighting. Happy B day Frenchie!!

  • Brittany August 16, 2018 at 10:54 am

This is so cute!! What kind of dog is Frenchie? Looking for my soon to be 9 year old!

    • Mix and Match Mama August 16, 2018 at 12:50 pm

      They’re both Coton de Tulears!

  • SS August 16, 2018 at 11:17 am

What kind of dogs are Frenchie and Poppy? Did they potty train easily? We have an 8.5 year old son and I am thinking I will break down and get a dog for him soon. He begs me daily. But we would like a small dog with sweet temperament who we can potty train. Also do you mind sharing where you got Frenchie or Poppy from? Thanks!

    • Mix and Match Mama August 16, 2018 at 12:50 pm

They are both Coton de Tulears and YES! They are just the sweetest and both potty trained fairly quickly!

  • Lindsay @ Lindsay's Sweet World August 16, 2018 at 11:33 am

Happy birthday, Frenchie!! She is such a sweetheart!

  • Cameryn Bartschi August 16, 2018 at 11:45 am

Love how taking care of a pup has matured and helped your kiddos. So funny that you think 2 dogs is easier than 1….maybe it’s like kids, you are already in the mindset so what’s one more?

  • sally cavenaugh August 16, 2018 at 11:48 am

We bought a Coton after you told me your breed and we LOVE Love Love our dog. He is so smart and loving. Perfect for our family. What breeder did you buy from? We bought from a lady outside of little rock but my sister wants a Coton too and lives outside of Dallas. Thanks. Sally

  • Lorena August 16, 2018 at 12:20 pm

Love this! I have been thinking about getting a 2nd dog but fear my 1st pup won’t get along. Any helpful tips on bringing in a 2nd dog into the family?

    • Mix and Match Mama August 16, 2018 at 12:50 pm

We let Poppy play with our neighbor’s dog quite a bit beforehand to make sure she was good with other dogs. Our first dog, Tulip, was not good with other dogs.

  • Crystal August 16, 2018 at 12:55 pm

    Happy 1st Birthday Frenchie!

Shay, that last pic you captured of K in the yard kissing her sweet pup, it’s just priceless!
I love it when a real, sweet, moment is captured like that. It seems to sum up their relationship perfectly ♥️

  • Hanna August 16, 2018 at 1:49 pm

Love!! We recently got another sister puppy for our dog. And their relationship is just the sweetest. What kind of crate do you guys use?? I love how spacious it looks!

  • andrea August 16, 2018 at 3:13 pm

dogs (usually) do better when there are more than one. they are PACK animals…..

  • Francesca August 16, 2018 at 3:18 pm

Happy birthday Frenchie! Totally random question, but how far along are you with Grey’s Anatomy?! Is this obsession still real?? #McDreamyForever

      Hahahah! Season 7, episode 5!

  • kellie carrara August 16, 2018 at 3:45 pm

oh that is just the sweetest! happy birthday frenchie! We now have two Bi-shus and I am in the same camp — TWO is better than one! Our 3 year old Daisy-Belle was so lonely, then we got our boy Bentley, he’s 2, and they are just the best of friends. Daisy-Belle is our chill laid-back girl, while Bentley likes to be in control…but they are the perfect siblings and addition to our family. Have fun celebrating her — hope there are pup-cakes after dinner tonight! 🙂

  • Nikki August 16, 2018 at 6:32 pm

No way?! How cool is that???!!!

  • Jeanie August 16, 2018 at 6:57 pm

I love both of your dogs! I heartily agree and believe that everyone should have at least two dogs to keep each other company. I have three currently.

  • Janet August 16, 2018 at 7:56 pm
