It’s the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!!
Oh my word, it’s here.
Okay, this pic above was the first day of school LAST year, but you better believe, we’ll take our traditional front door pics this morning too (and I’ll post them later!).
Things are super weird today…as the first day of school will be at home virtually but at least that’s better than nothing. It’s going to be different, but we’re going to have good attitudes about everything (me included!). If you want to know what we’re eating today, I’m sharing it here…
…in my First Day of School Menu post!
From our traditional breakfast, to our after school snack, and then of course, our favorite first day dinner, you can see it all in THIS POST.
Yesterday morning, I was laughing out loud. I woke up all kinds of melancholy because even though our big summer vacation was cancelled, we didn’t have our annual road trip, camps cancelled, no volleyball games, no church activities, the house flooded…all things are WEIRD and WRONG, we had a really good summer, and I’m sad to see it go. I was telling Andrew this and then I said “my one regret is that I didn’t sleep in more” and he goes “my one regret is that I didn’t throw an extra tarp on the roof”. Guys, I couldn’t stop laughing. You know how sometimes you just get “tickled” by something and cannot stop laughing? That was me at 4:30 yesterday morning when my husband nonchalantly said he should have thrown an extra tarp on our roof. Here’s what I’ve learned this summer, no matter how crappy things can be, as long as I have my people, I have everything I need. Summer 2020 you were probably technically our worst…but I will take great memories of you with me too.
From here, I’m going to leave you guys until MONDAY. I feel like I need to make sure we get our feet under us this week with virtual learning for four kids, so I’m going to take a little blogging break and come back here Monday morning. In the meantime…
…look at this precious picture right here. Guys, these kiddos were all about to start kindergarten when we took this and now, they’re all heading to SIXTH GRADE! Where did the time go?! It goes by so quickly. All of you new mamas enjoy every minute.
Have the best back to school day! I’ll see you all on Monday! xo

Happy First Day!!
My teacher heart feels so badly for all who don’t get to start in person!
Here’s hoping you all have a smooth and fast day!

My babies are 30 and 25 now and I wish I could go back, so Moms and Dads out there do cherish it all. You blink and your daughter is walking down the aisle. Sooo, back to the Shulls – enjoy the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s what life is all about. Cherish every day. Every day is a gift!!!
Amy says
Aww I feel the same way. My boys are 20 and 24, somedays I just wonder where the time has gone.

Our kids start back to school today. Yesterday I had them each take a minute to write about their ‘5 month summer’. I’m so glad I did. No one complained about all of the bummers, they all wrote about all of the cool experiences they had while at home….more times to play cards with dad, making silly posters for kids in the neighborhood who had quarantine birthdays, a surprise slushy day, so much time for swimming, etc. While summer wasn’t normal exactly they truly made great memories.

Have a Great School Year.
God bless.

Good luck to all your kiddo’s! And to you too with virtual. You all will be fine, you have each other and…coffee!!!

Now that comment of Andrew’s made me LAUGH OUT LOUD!! So funny, my husband says things like that and I am so thankful to have my family during this crazy time in our world. Good luck with virtual school, I hope it is short lived and the kiddos get to go to “real” school soon. I moved my 5th child into his dorm yesterday and it was kind of an out of body experience with all the masks and such! Thankfully the Lord knew all this and has a special plan for all or our children experiencing this new world we live in. Love your hopeful attitude!!
Ruth says
Happy first day of school Shay and kiddos! Goodness, you guys have been through it this summer, I love how you’ve maintained a positive perspective!
Amy says
Andrew’s a pretty funny guy…how can you not laugh at that. The picture of all the kiddos for Class of 2027 got me, oh how fast the time goes. My “baby” is in his 2nd year of college this fall and I can still flash back to his first day of kindergarten like it was just recently. Best wishes to you and your sweet family as they kick off the new school year 2020 style.

?Happy 1st (virtual) Day of School Shull Crew? Thinking about you all and hoping you have a smooth start to the school year and a fantastic school year!! Our original start day was yesterday but it’s been changed to August 26th and just this week it was changed to a virtual start. I too will have 4 kiddos starting school virtually: 1st grade, 4th grade, 7th grade and a freshmen in high school- how did that happen so fast??!!
Deb says
You have the best attitude about all of the things going on (or off) this year. You remind us that there is still so much to be thankful for, even when our world seems to have gone crazy. Thanks for keeping us smiling through the ups and downs of it all. Those precious kids are graduating in seven years?! That’s how long I’ve been reading your blog!! Hold those babies tight!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, Deb. xoxoxo

Oh I remember that picture when you posted on your blog years ago!!! That was just before children for me and I just sent my first to Kindergarten!! To see Kensington in 6th grade is crazy!! Can’t believe it!!❤️
Mix and Match Mama says
I hope your kinder kid had a great day!!!! It goes by fast, mama!!!
Alison T. says
I think Andrew probably nailed it with that one! LOL. It’s good to find humor amidst the horror. 🙂 I hope the first week of (virtual) school goes well for you all! It’s definitely a strange year, but basically one that every person in this world won’t forget!
Mix and Match Mama says
I could not stop laughing…which is a nice change from the crying about the house. I needed that laugh…because it’s really all going to be okay.
Dana says
Girl, I just sent my 5 year-old off to college yesterday! ? It was the weirdest thing.
Happy back-to-school!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh my gosh! I can’t imagine?! I’m going to blink and be there, friend!!
Allena says
We were supposed to start today, but our school pushed back a week to be better equipped for virtual, so we have another week of ‘summer’. I’ll have a 6th grader, 2nd grader, and PK3 (but all at the same school, only 1 drop-off for this mama, hallelujah!!!) I’m taking the first 2 days of school off from work so I can hopefully get organized for our 4 weeks of virtual (really hoping it’s only 4 weeks!). Funny story – I am an avid watch of DCC: Making the Team and on their IG page they are showing segments from previous seasons, and there was a montage about Brooke and your whole family was in the clip from going to their showcase thing and you were pregnant (assuming Kensington). I was like ‘I recognize those people in the stands’ haha.
Mix and Match Mama says
No way?! That’s too funny!!! I was HUGE! I think I had K about two weeks later!!
Pamela S Heath says
I sure do miss the first day of school “Momma Breakfast” picture at the local hangout!
Best of luck, lots of prayers & patience!
Mix and Match Mama says
Me too. That is always one of my favorite traditions.
Jaren says
Hope that first day goes well!! I can’t help but feel the same about the summer and the 3 months before that. As much as I hate this pandemic and all the things it prevents us from doing, it was such a gift to spend this time with my family. God is present in the good and the bad. I’m really going to try to find a daily gratitude in the midst of these next few months as we go back to school.

Hope your kids had a great first day! Thinking of all the mamas and the teachers this school year <3

Just read all of these sweet comments after reading your post, Shay. Your kiddos have such a wonderful, mother, father and family! You have such a great attitude and it has paid off in how terrific your are at parenting and life! Our babies are 31 and 36 and would I have benefited from all of your posts when I was raising them! I envy the mamas who are in their 20s and 30s and early 40s raising their kiddos during your long run of Mix and Match Mama!
Here’s to the 2020-21 school year, however it plays out! You’ll shine, Shay, and so will your kiddos!
