Hey, hey, hey Monday!
I am trying really hard to stay upbeat and positive both here and in “real life” at home. I think, for the most part, I’m doing pretty well, but I just wanted you to know that yeah, I totally get that this sucks…I’m just trying to be light in a dark time. Just like you guys, so many things aren’t as they should be and our family is disappointed about things not going as planned over here too. I just keep telling myself that it’s out of my control, so I need to focus on the blessings I do have…but my heart breaks especially for my kids and things they’re disappointed in. As a mom, that’s so much harder than your own disappointments. Anyway, enough, dark, here’s some light…today is my MARCH BOOK REVIEW!
The good news though is that because I went on a trip and then also had so much extra down time, I read SEVEN books this month!
A few disclaimers/thoughts/things to mention before we start:
1: I really loved just about each and every book that I read this month!
2: There were more “rated R” books than normal. I try and always get my books from your suggestions and for whatever reason, this batch seemed more rated R than other batches. For those of you who don’t care, awesome, but for those of you who do care, keep reading because you still might want to read some of them (they’re that good!) and the last one is for everyone.
3: I read one book this month that if it’s not in my top three for the year, I’ll be shocked!
4: Please leave me more suggestions and recs today! All of these books were suggestions from YOU!
Okay, ready? Let’s go…
I kicked off the month with Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid.
Hmmmm…okay, I thought this book was interesting. I would probably say that if I had to rank all six books for the month, I would put this one last, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t like it…it just wasn’t quite as entertaining to me as the other ones. I would actually love to hear your feedback about this novel because when it was over and I sat down to type my notes, I was drawing a blank. It’s definitely a story about racial tension and how completely unfair life can be just because you are at the wrong place at the wrong time…but I thought it could have been a bit “meatier”. The author goes back and forth between the two main characters, and I enjoyed both of them and their perspectives, but I kept waiting for just a bit…more. The book moves quickly and there’s really never a dull moment, so it’s not that it’s boring by any stretch of the imagination, I just thought it could have had a bit more substance to it. I’m going to go ahead and label this one R for language and subject matter. I don’t know, even as I sit here and type this, I know I’m being vague, but I think it’s because I thought the story was good, just maybe not as deep as I would have liked. Have you read it? What did you think?
When I wrote my notes for The Friend Zone, I put “just like a Hallmark movie but rated R”. Ha! This novel was cute, happy, quick to read, funny and without a ton of substance, but it made me feel happy when I picked it up. The two main characters have always been friends and stayed in the “friend zone”, but of course, as all great Hallmark movies do, it gives you the happiness but is also pretty predictable from the word go. If you just want an easy read, here you go. You will fly through this one as you fall for both characters (and their friends/family). I love, love, love me a happy book 🙂 . (But remember, it is rated R!)
Know My Name was one of the best books I’ve read in a long, long time. It was unbelievably hard and emotionally challenging for me to read, but I’m so glad I took the time to do it.
The author was made famous in the media a few years ago as the survivor of the Stanford sexual assault case and in this memoir, she goes into great detail about the entire process of not only the assault but how, in being a part of the prosecution’s case, her life was almost ruined. I have never been a victim of sexual assault before and yet this book was really hard for me to read, so if you or someone you love have been, I would proceed with caution. This memoir could be really validating and healing, but I can imagine that for some of you, it could stir up emotions and feelings you aren’t wanting to face right now. This book is definitely rated R for content but that really shouldn’t stop any of you for honestly considering it. There were many moments when I was reading that I had to stop and do something else because it’s very real, very raw and very graphic. Please know, the attack is, of course, extremely graphic, but it’s also the aftermath that really hurt me to read as well. When the book was all said and done, I had an entirely new perspective on whether I would prosecute or not if I were in her shoes. Before reading the book, I would have said “Of course, I would prosecute! Without a doubt!”, but then after reading the book, I had an entirely different perspective which would make me pause and really pray should I ever be in the same position…because her story is a lot about how the victim can become the villain. I think it’s so important to read hard books about real life from time to time.
Friends, if American Dirt isn’t in my top three books of the year, I will be SHOCKED. I absolutely loved it, didn’t want to put it down, and told everyone I know to read it. I think this was the number one rec by you guys last month, so thank YOU for telling me to read it because it was amazing. As much as I love those light little chick lit books, when I read novels like this, I’m reminded why I love to read so much. This is a fictional story that will suck you in on the very first page. It’s about a mom and her young son who live a really nice little life in Mexico but all of a sudden find themselves on the run from a Mexican cartel and have to escape to America. This book has everything in it…it’s suspenseful, it’s about love, it’s endearing, it’s tragic, it’s about being a mom, it’s politically provocative for sure and it’s so well written. I know a lot of people see the border as black and white, but I think it would be hard for you to read this and not see the gray area as well. This is another book where you wonder if “doing the right thing” (not bowing down to the drug cartel) is really the better choice? It will make you think because honest to goodness both this book and the one before it made me wonder if the “right” choice is always the “best” choice (I mean, I know it is, but GEEZ it can be so hurtful it almost kills you). This book just reached in and spoke to my soul…especially as a mom to a young boy, I kept thinking “what would I do?”. I loved it. Again, probably rated R for content (I hate labeling books, but I know so many of you are passionate about not buying books that are rated R, so I will keep doing it!), but how can a book about running from a drug cartel not be rated R?! The subject is so intense yet so relevant.
Whew! Okay, after two REALLY hard to read books, I needed LIGHT in my life, so I read…
…here’s the thing. Christina Lauren is a relatively new author for me (it’s actually two authors writing as one). You guys introduced her to me last year and since then, I think I’ve read maybe five of her books. While I love them because they’re easy and light, super quick reads…I’m starting to grow a little annoyed with each one. (Don’t hate me!) Josh & Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating was such a quick read, and I needed something light/easy/happy after the previous two books, but at the same time, I knew how the story would end when I read page one. They’re just maybe a bit too predictable without a lot of substance and always rated R. Am I just being moody now? Did the previous two books ruin me to light fluff? I sure hope not and please keep recommending them to me, but this one just felt a little blah. Basically, Josh and Hazel are best friends who try and fix each other up with other people. I bet I don’t even have to say anything else and you can guess the rest of the story 😉 . It was cute enough, but I didn’t have all the happy feels when it was over about recommending it to you.
I wanted to throw in a suspenseful novel this month for those of you who like things a little dark, so I read The Wives.
Okay, I thought this was the perfect plot for me. Erika is the yin to my yang and can only read chick lit in small doses while I can only read scary in them. I thought this one was just suspenseful enough for me (I don’t like them super dark and twisted), but the plot moved forward enough and didn’t get too wacky/complicated/crazy. Erika hasn’t read this one and maybe she would think it was a wee bit lame (she likes them twisty), but I thought the pace was perfect. It’s about one man and his three wives. They’re not polygamist per se because maybe they know about each other or maybe they don’t, but that’s the gist of it. I don’t want to say anything else about the plot as it is a mystery. If you like any sort of Gone Girl-type book (that’s like a whole genre in and of itself now!), then here’s another one for you 🙂 .
Well, well, well, I don’t say this lightly or just because she’s a friend of mine, but Melanie Shankle’s new book, On the Bright Side, is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I loved every single page. (I love all of Melanie’s books, but this one right here really spoke to my heart!!) This memoir covered a lot of things personally relevant to me: being a mom, being a wife, being a friend to someone dying of cancer, having a great group of besties who support one another, being a dog lover, being tired, wondering if you’re doing it all right…it was the perfect mix of all things important to me written in one book with funny stories and lots of wit. Melanie just has this way of being super real while also being super encouraging with her faith. If “church-y and preach-y” bother you, then you will love her. She loves Jesus, but she doesn’t mind sharing stories about how she learned hard lessons after too many tequila shots. She’s just very REAL. I think you’ll find this memoir encouraging, funny and uplifting no matter what stage of womanhood you happen to be in.
Whoa! Seven really different books this month! I’m super, super grateful to all of you because they’re all your recommendations!
As always, you can see the other book reviews I’ve done so far in 2020 right HERE along with my TOP THREE books of 2019 and a list of every book I read in 2019 🙂 .
Okay…what should I read next??? Please comment and share!!
Happy Book Day!! xo
Holley says
Oh my gosh, all of these sound soooo good!!! Putting them all on my list especially American Dirt! Btw I love that you rate the books by saying if they’re R or not, I feel it gives me a good warning which I like! Just curious, are you still reading everything on your kindle?
-Holley @ beesimplyorganized.com
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! This month, I read everything on there except for Melanie’s new book! That’s the only book this year, I’ve not read on my kindle!
Susan cravens says
This Tender land by William Kent Krueger.
Such a good book, and I didn’t want it to end. And, it’s not a book I would normally even read but for some reason I did and I can’t quit recommending it to people.
Maria says
In Five Years by Rebecca Serle (March Good Morning America book club) loved it!!! Such a good book. The Jetsetters by Amanda Ward (Reese’s book club) just started it and can’t put it down. A mother wins a European cruise and takes her adult children with her. You would really enjoy it!
Monica says
YES! In Five Years was such a good book!
Rayne says
I agree, I listened on audible and really enjoyed!
Colleen T says
Just finished the Overdue Life of Amy Byler which I enjoyed. It was an easy read and somewhat predictable but imagining a mom vacation is what many may need right now. Started The Giver of Stars and loving it, favorite book of the year so far.
Did you know there is a lot of controversy surrounding American Dirt? So much so that she had to cancel her book tour. The controversy is interesting to read and the actually made me not want to read the book but after your review I’m intrigued. I wonder what you think of the controversy after reading it and if you saw some examples of stereotyping or were unaware of the controversy completely and if the controversy would sway how much you enjoyed the book or rate it at the end of the year.
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m in a FB group where I do specifically try and stay away from any book I’m currently reading or plan to read (because as Andrew would say, I like to go in “fresh”), but American Dirt had so much chatter that I just left the thread for a while until I finished it. I 100% can see where the controversy lies, but it was an exceptionally written book about some amazing characters with grit, tenacity and bravery. It made me want to read more of her books!
Jill says
I’m friends with Jeannie Cummins SIL. The controversy surrounding this book was INSANE. She was getting death threats. Her book A Rio in Heaven is true story of her brother (my friends husband) and cousins. I haven’t read it but it’s also supposed to be amazing, if you like true crime.
Mix and Match Mama says
I really liked her writing style. I was engaged the entire time! I need to check that book out too!
Johanna says
Dear Shay.
I have been reading your blog for a long time, all the way from Cologne in Germany (your favorite food-country 😉 ).
Thank you for your book review, I have been looking forward to it all month. Right now I am home in social isolation with a toddler, while my husband has to work long hours (working in the food industry). All while being 39 weeks pregnant, waiting to give birth now any day. In these crazy times (not even knowing if my husband may be present at birth), reading is my refuge. So thanks for giving me such good book suggestions!
Johanna
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh Johanna! God bless YOU and your family!!! Sending you so much love this morning as you await your new arrival. xoxo
Lindsay says
Thank you, Shea, your book recs never disappoint!!! I’m reading ALLLL the books right now to try and stay sane. Just FYI… the title of the post says March 2019, and I think you meant March 2020.
Mix and Match Mama says
Ugh! I corrected it! Thank you!!
Can says
I always enjoy reading about your book picks and always end up adding many of them to my list. So thank you!! I just wanted to point out that it is March 2020 – your post says 2019. 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Well doesn’t that just sum up my life right now. Hahaha!
Erika Slaughter says
The perfect Monday motivation to get all my chores done early is this review! I can’t wait to read Melanie’s new book. It’s up next!
Peyton Cline says
Sun Down Motel. It is a scary one which I know you don’t usually go for, but it’s so good!
Lisa DeArmit says
In Five Years by Rebecca Serle. Such a unique plot… chick lit with a does of mystery / thriller. Easy to read in one setting! Love it!
Lindsey Schneider says
I just finished In an Instant. I couldn’t put it down, it was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time!!
Cari Ferrell says
I finished that book this morning!! So so good! I keep thinking about it as I go about my day.
Jen says
I read Cancel the Wedding and loved it! I have been going back and reading your old book reviews to get ideas of what to read next. 🙂
Some favorites I’ve read lately include:
The overdue life of Amy byler
The story of Arthur truluv
Ugly love by Colleen Hoover
I’m fine and either are you
Anything by Lauren layne, but beware these fall more into the category of Christina Lauren, but they’re still so good! I’m just finishing up the stiletto and oxford series, which overlap with the same characters…her books are quick reads but not necessarily all light and airy.
Chelsea says
KA Tucker – the simple wild, and the follow up book – wild at heart
Lyssa Kay Adams – Bromance book club, and the next book in the series – Undercover Bromance
Diane Chamberlain – Big lies in a small town
Colleen Oakley – you were there too
Tanya says
I can’t wait to read Friend Zone for something light, and Know My Name for something meatier. I tried American Dirt, but didn’t finish…maybe I’ll give it another try. My best read last month was Dear Edward and The Perfect Couple (which I’m sure you’ve already read!) Thanks, as always, for the recommendations. My latest book reviews ~
Tanya – The Other Side of the Road
Tammy says
Loved Dear Edward! Great book
Clancy says
I read The Friend Zone in March as well, and I really liked it, but proceed caution, I cried. It does have a somber sub plot as well.
Beth Miller says
I just finished “This Won’t End Well” by Camille Pagan. It was SO GOOD! You think it’s a cute, chick lit book, but it is actually so much more and tackles hard issues like workplace harassment, strained friendships, new friendships, and abandonment. I definitely recommend it! It’s easily one of my favorites for the year so far!
Tiffany says
I love your book posts! Currently listening to Know My Name (read by the author). I agree w everything you say about it. I just got American Dirt. As soon as I finish what I’m listening to & reading (Daisy Jones), I’ll move American Dirt to the top of my pile.
Valerie Stults says
Thank you for recommendations!! I read friend zone and you were spot on. Quick good read!!! I wanted to recommend the Silent Patient! It was good had good twist!! I put American Dirt on my list!!! Thanks again. Love your book reviews!
Mix and Match Mama says
I loved The Silent Patient!! I hope you love American Dirt!
Kaylyn says
My favorite so far for 2020 was Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough!
Amber LaRussa says
Shay, Have you read Jessica Simpson’s autobiography yet? Open Book? I’ve heard lots of good reviews and I downloaded it last night, but haven’t started it! I look forward to your book reviews every month and it sounds like you read some great books that I will add to my “to read” list that is ever growing! LOL! No better time than now to pick up a good book. Praying all of this is behind us soon enough! Take care and stay safe!
Mix and Match Mama says
I did last month!! I LOVED it!!!!!!
Molly says
I love your reviews. I’ve read the majority of these books. Just an FYI. I might add a trigger warning for The Friend Zone since it deals with infertility.
Also, there was a ton of controversy surrounding American Dirt. The author even had to cancel her book tour due to the controversy. I know it is a fiction book but this became a huge deal in the book world.
Mix and Match Mama says
I am a part of Ashley Spivey’s Book Club on FB and purposely didn’t read any of the reviews/comments about it as I knew it was bubbling up in pop culture as controversial and I wanted to read it with an open mind. I loved it. I really loved it.
Stacy Meek says
If you have never read In the Sanctuary of Outcasts by Neil White, it is a really entertaining memoir. I spotted it on my shelf and recommended it to my book club. Its interesting and an easy read too!
Julie says
The Sanctuary of Outcasts is one of my favorite books of all time! I have recommended it before as well but not sure if she reads books that are not recent?? It is such a good book!
Keryn says
The Island of Sea Women, The Alice Network, The Book of Lost Friends.
Carly says
My 2 recs this month are The Two Lives of Lydia Bird and Maybe You Should Talk to Someone. Both SO good!!
I read Such A Fun Age for my book club and I would say we almost all agree with what you’re saying. It definitely could have been more than it is. If you are interested in books on racial tension I highly recommend The Hate You Give. It is HARD, it is definitely R rated, but gosh, it’s necessary.
We read American Dirt for my book club this month and I am SO mad we can’t meet to discuss it because I want to talk about this book with people. It’s just so good and so hard and man am I glad I read it!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Maybe You Should Talk To Someone is SO FANTASTIC!!
Becky says
If you get Apple tv, Oprah has two episodes with the author of American Dirt that are good. One discusses the problem people had with it and part 2 talks about the books and interviews real people who have made the passage.
Mix and Match Mama says
Really?! I”m super into documentaries these days!! Thank you!
Sarah Gicius says
You can watch these interviews on AppleTV. Super interesting.
Peg says
“Kiss the Girls and Make Them Cry” is the last book written by Mary Higgins Clark before she passed away recently. It is awesome!!! But then she was an amazing author!!
I agree that “American Dirt” is one of the best books I’ve read recently too. Thanks for all your suggestions!
Aparna says
Peg, I so agree with you! I have read all of MH Clark books! She was one of my fav authors for that genre…didn’t know she had passed away.
Anita Chaplin says
You should read Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore and In Five Years by Rebecca serle
Lindsey Buckmaster says
This is a great article that has helped me with my feelings during this time. And I agree—so hard to see the disappointment that my kids are experiencing. It’s like everything they’ve worked for and looked forward to this year is no more. But you’re right—so important to try our hardest as moms to stay positive and upbeat! Praying for your sweet family and you!

Thank you so much!!!!!

I just finished The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes and loved it! It’s a fictional story about a period in American history that is not often written about, taking place in a coal mining town in Kentucky. Great read!
Jess Ackermann says
I am 60% into Such a Fun Age and feel the same- it’s just kind of MEH… but I am interested and look forward to reading it. I keep waiting for something BiG to happen. Hmm.. maybe I shouldn’t hold my breath. As far as recommendations- I just read Followers by Megan Angelo. It was so Interesting. It is set in the future and is just really a crazy story ( I think as a blogger/ influencer you might really like it).
Kristine says
Love your book reviews! I just finished Untamed by Glennon Doyle. So good! And just started Dear Edward…loving it so far!
Amy says
A Fall of Marigolds. So good!
Naomi says
I hope you don’t mind if I ask you this question – as a Christian don’t you feel convicted about reading R rated books? And if it doesn’t bother *you*, do you worry about recommending them to others? You have a huge platform here, women are looking to you for guidance in all areas of their lives. This is a huge responsibility….and it seems like some of these recommendations could cause someone young in their faith to lose their footing on their walk with Christ.
Mix and Match Mama says
I personally only read what I feel right about. There have been some books that I’ve started and stopped because I didn’t feel like they were for me (I just never mention those books here bc I didn’t read them all the way through). I feel like as a mature, adult woman, I can read a variety of books for me to enjoy and then also to pass on to readers as I know I have a very mixed audience of women who like a variety of books. I speak a lot about faith and following the Lord on here and feel very confident I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing for Jesus and sharing His light to the world.
Kelsee says
Yay! I’m so glad you read Know My Name, American Dirt, On The Bright Side and The Wives this month. I loved all four of those! I have heard great thing about Such A Fun Age, but haven’t read it yet. Its still sitting in my TBR pile.
This month I read:
The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni: 4/5 stars, This book was very different than I expected and I really enjoyed it.
Perfect Tunes: 3/5 stars
Maybe You Should Talk To Someone: 3/5 stars. I know you loved this one, but it fell a bit flat for me.
On the Bright Side: 5/5!!!! I love Melanie. All of her books just make me feel happy, which I really needed this month.
In Five Years: 5/5 stars. Please read this book if you haven’t already!! Its so good!!
Meg & Jo: 4/5 stars. I loved this new version of Little Women.
Can’t wait for your book review next month!!
Rachel says
Have you read Room by Emma Donoghue? Read it in about 2 days and then watched the movie on Netflix…so good!!
Taylor says
I’m so glad you loved American Dirt. I’ve been passing it around to every one I know.
Kari says
The author of friend zone has a cupcake bakery named Nadia cakes. They ship all over USA and have the most wonderful and fun cupcakes especially for April Fools Day.
Susan Crivella says
A Good Neighborhood
The Alice Network
We Must Be Brave
Red, White, & Royal Blue (rated R)
Kathy says
I am very grateful during this time of self distancing that I was blessed with the love of reading. I love your book reviews and have read so many you recommend. Have you read The Wicked City and The Wicked Redhead by Beatrix Williams? I loved both and can’t wait for the next in the series.
The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell and The Guest Book were also excellent.
I read the Wives and although didn’t hate it, it got lazy in the end as so many in the thriller genre do. I love a thriller but this let me down.
I read Once in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren and won’t read any more. I can do chic lit on occasion but this didn’t hold my interest and was too predictable. Unlike One Day in December, which I really liked.
I will put American Dirt on my list.
Thank you and be safe.
Erin LLoyd says
YAH!!! Book review day…my favorite day ever!!
Eileen says
I loved In Five Years by Rebecca Serle and The Two Lives of Lydia Byrd by Josie Silver. Also I felt the same way about Such a Fun Age . . . I’m not even sure I could give a summary or explain what it’s about after reading it. I liked it? I think?
Kristen W says
I read Such a Fun Age, as well this month and I agree it was just okay. I wasn’t overly impressed. I’ve been on a rut with books this month. I just finished All this Can be Yours by Jami Attenburg and the only reason I finished it was because Of being in isolation and I only have a few books at home that I haven’t read. Yes I have access to books online and will probably end up reading online by not my fave, I prefer an actual book to hold. Lol!! Look forward to reading several on your list?
Yvonne says
Hi Shay, thank you for another great book review! Great timing for everything that is going on right now! I LOVED American Dirt, I felt is was so impactful, really stayed with me! I too needed some chick lit after reading that book.
I downloaded the Bright Side on Audible another wonderful book, loved it as well! Take care of yourself and your family, God bless!
Kate K. says
The first two are more of YA books, but deal with very adult issues! “ATBP” is one of the best books I’ve read in a LONG time! I’m a 9th grade English teacher, so I try to alternate “adult” books and YA books that I could potentially recommend to my kiddos.
“All the Bright Places” and “Holding Up the Universe” by Jennifer Niven
“Firefly Lane” by Kristin Hannah
Allison says
Would love to see if you have any other pg-13 recommendations for teen reads… Thanks!
Super helpful to have some book suggestions during this downtime for my daughter that loves to read.
It’s so hard to find somewhat clean books these days 🙂
Kristy says
All the Bright Places just about DID ME IN! I loved it so much and it stayed with me for a long, long time! Netflix made a movie but my daughter told me not to watch it because it would ruin how I felt about the story (she didn’t like the Netflix portrayal). I try to stay up on YA lit since I have teenagers.
Kristy says
All the Bright Places just about DID ME IN. I haven’t cried that hard over a book in a long time! So, so, so good! I try to stay up on YA lit since I have teenagers and ATBP has been one of my (and my daughter’s) favorites! I haven’t watched the Netflix movie but my daughter gave it 2 thumbs down. 🙁
Kasey says
I’m a romance reader and Christina Lauren was a fav of mine since Beautiful Bastard (their first novel) but I agree their writing isn’t the same anymore with their new books.
You should read The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros or When Ashes Fall by Marni Mann! Both amazing books that tug at your heart!
OM says
The Herd… so good, it is a little light, a little suspense. Oh, and on this note if you haven’t read it already – The Whisper Network.
Carmen says
The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. It will start slow but is such an amazing story!
Suzy Bennett says
In Malcolm Caldwell’s book, Talking to Strangers, he talks about the Stanford rape. Having read her book, you may be interested in what he says. It’s a good read about seeing things in different lights.
I look forward to your reviews. Agree on Such a Fun Age.
Allena says
I agree about Christina Lauren – their books are cute but not much substance so I don’t read too many of them together. I also really liked The Friend Zone and there’s a sequel coming out soon about the best friend, I’m looking forward to reading it. I follow the author on IG and she’s really funny and also owns a cupcake bakery! I read 11 books this month and several were really good – The Overdue Life of Amy Byler, Where the Forest Meets the Stars, and Flight Girls were my favorite for the month!
Kim says
I recommend I married adventure by osa johnson. A much needed escape from this world we are in right now!
Sheaffer Sims says
I would say I might start reading during this quarantine, but I’d be lying. 😉
Mix and Match Mama says
Hahahaha! I know you better than that 😉 .
Ashley F. says
Ok not a book rec, but you have to get the game Spot It for your kiddos! We played it Friday night with our 12 year old and he loved it. I know everyone is looking for things to do indoors right now, and we have been playing a lot of games! Ordered it from Amazon.
Jill says
Man, I felt the same way about Such a Fun Age. Even the title implied the child would have more to do with the plot… but it didn’t. I felt like the guy was kind of the villain and kind of just a normal guy. I agree, a little off and not my favorite.
Looking forward to American Dirt now! (And you reminded me I’ve never read Gone Girl, this May be just the quarantine to do that!).
Did I get the recommendation for Conviction here? That was good too (by Denise Mina)!
Lisa Willey says
I LOVED In An Instant by Suzanne Redfearn. It’s about love, family, hard choices, and carrying on after tragedy.
Also, A Woman Is No Man! Wow!
Kate says
I read Such a Fun Age this month too and felt the same way! I have seen it on so many “must read” lists and I finished it kind of feeling like I didn’t understand why so many people loved it. Just a little dull.
Tamra says
If you enjoyed American Dirt you may like Queen of the South on Netflix. I’m reading The Family Next Door and am enjoying it. I think it was on one of your lists. Take care!
Lori L says
I loved Ghosted by Rosie Walsh! I think you would really like it. Thank you for your book reviews, they are a bright spot on these rough days! Take care and stay safe!
Sharon says
Just finished American Dirt and liked it, I thought you could really tell that it was not written by a latino and not written by someone who has first and experience of the migrant experience. I thought the character development was lacking which makes sense hen written by a white woman. I am now looking to read books by latin authors on the same subject. I absolutely loved such a fun age
Amanda @ Cupcake N Dreams says
I’m still reading some of your previous book review books! I may have to add On The Bright Side because all I can take is lighter fare right now. Wishing you all well as another week starts in this crazy world.

Hi Shay,
Read Long Bright River by Liz Moore and She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb. These two books are both heavy reads, but I have both of these books in my top 5.
Laura Paredes says
By the way, I LOVED American Dirt, Know My Name, and The Friend Zone. You read some good books this month.
Mix and Match Mama says
I did!!!! You girls gave me some great recommendations!!!
Julie says
Hi! First, thank you for being so open, honest, and inspiring to us all. I love that your blog is a bright and happy spot in these dark times. But I also love that you’re “real” and share with us how you have hard days too. I think everything is so day by day right now. On Friday, I had a great day with the family. People accomplished things. This morning is OFF THE RAILS! And I hear my poor husband trying to get the kids to do their schoolwork while I deal with an urgent work situation. OFF THE RAILS-lol!
Anyway, so excited for your book review! I’ve been on the fence about ‘American Dirt’ but will definitely read now. I have loved lately:
‘The Two Lives of Lydia Bird’ (Josie Silver). I’m halfway through this and I love love love her writing and characters! This one is a bit sad but I’m truly enjoying it. ‘One Day in December’ is one of my faves!
“The Ride of a Lifetime” was a great biography full of amazing advice from Disney’s CEO. Side note-Disney is paying all its cast members through mid-April-how wonderful is that?
I LOVED ‘On the bright side’ SOOOOO much. Could there be a more perfect time for this book?
Have you tried Arthur Truluv or any of Elizabeth Berg’s books? Arthur is a feel-good book about an unexpected friendship between and elder widow and a young teenage girl.
Thanks for the book review-books are needed more than ever now. And I’m SO glad I listened to you and got a kindle. So easy to get books now. Take good care!
Mix and Match Mama says
It sounds like we have so much in common!! I just added some of these to my list!!
Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog says
Ooh, I need to get my hands on these, especially now that I have so much more free time! Thanks for the reviews! ❤️✨

I just finished the Friend Zone as well and you forgot to mention how sad it was in parts… I was crying! I also thought Know my Name was just incredible, emotionally draining and raw, but so well written!
Mix and Match Mama says
I didn’t cry in this one…but I did cry in Know My Name and American Dirt. I loved all three books!
Beth Carroll says
I felt exactly the same way about such a fun age. I read for book club and it is almost gone from my mind. I don’t even know if I can talk about it cause it just was ok. It was on the top seller list crazy.
Did you read City of Girls yet? Really good…
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m so glad I wasn’t alone with my opinion!!
Bri Eason says
I just finished “In Five Years” and it was the best book I’ve read in a long time! I had no idea where it was headed, but loved every second of it. Highly recommend!
Joanne says
I have been reading quite a lot of darker meatier books lately and while I love them I was just thinking last night that I need to find some light, funny, and easy reading books. I really want something to make me laugh out loud; which isn’t always easy for a book to do. Sounds like you read some really great and meaty books this month too!
Robin says
“The Dutch House” is so good on audible. It’s read by Tom Hanks!
Lauren LeCroy says
You may have already read this one, but Something Needs to Change by David Platt is really good and an easy read. Also currently reading Raising Worry Free Girls and it is so so helpful and eye opening. Recommend for anyone with daughters who have worry or anxiety!
Ana says
If you’re truly reading these books, have they made you a more compassionate or open-minded person? Asking based on historical comments you’ve made. I think it’s great if reading provides insight into the world outside a sheltered bubble.
Mix and Match Mama says
Of course, I’m reading these books! Yes, reading has totally opened my mind to things as well as age, experience and maturity. Thank goodness, we all evolve and change as we get older. Who wants to still think the same way they did 20 years ago? Not me. I want to grow.
Susanne says
What a bizarre comment. Why would you think she’s not really reading these books?
Casey F says
The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg
The Gilded Years by Karin Tanabe (based on true story!!)
Julie says
I just finished “You Are Not Alone” by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. Highly recommend!
Susanne says
I just finished it too! Really good!
Patty says
I love, love, love Melanie Shankle’s newest book. Hers are all good, but this one really touched me. She’s so relatable and I love how she writes with humor, yet is clearly serious about the subjects she touches on. Truly gifted!
Paula Barry says
I found Know My Name very powerful and brave.
I recommend The Dutch House by Ann Patchett,
Recipe For a Perfect Wife by Karma Brown
I’m reading ‘My Dark Vanessa’ by Kate Elizabeth Russell – another tough read, but very believable I think.
Bri C says
I recently read Know My Name as well and I think it’s one of the best books I’ve read in my lifetime. I wanted to buy a million copies and send them to all my friends/family. I agree it can have a different effect on each individual but I think it’s an eye-opening book to read. Im glad you read it and felt similarly.
Laurie Birt says
The Girl With the Louding Voice
Rayne Osborn says
I second this, my favorite of 2020 so far. The writing is totally different, but so good. You will love the main character!!
Leslee says
I know it’s oldER but I wanna read the autobiography The Million Dollar Mermaid about Esther Williams. Can you just read it for me so I know if it’s good? Haha
Avery says
I totally agree about Such A Fun Age!!!! So many people who I normally have similar taste in books to recommended it, but I was not super impressed. I prefered The Hate U Give a hundred times over.
Amy R says
The author of the friend zone owns Nadia cupcakes where I live in Minnesota. She’s a hoot and makes delicious cupcakes!! You should follow her on Facebook!
Cathy says
Have you read Roomies by Christina Lauren? It’s my favorite of theirs. The best books I have read in a long time are The Simple Wild and Wild at Heart by KA Tucker. Really good, meatier romance. I really look forward to your book reviews each month. You have great taste in books!
Kate says
Hi! Love your book reviews and the comments that follow, I get so many good recommendations! I read Good Girls Don’t Lie from the comments last month and it was awesome, I loved it so immediately read three more from that author and they were all great!
Reading the Honey Don’t List by Christina Lauren right now and it’s great! An easy read for some stressful times!
If I didn’t have books I’d go crazy!
Two other recent good ones, The Admissions and The Islanders by Meg Mitchell Moore.
Karen says
You should read “You are the girl for the job!” by Jess Conolly. It’s a wonderful faith-based book that’s just full of great truths. It will have you saying AMEN as you read it 🙂
Michaelann says
Thank you so much for the book ratings, I greatly appreciate it!
LG says
I agree with you on ‘Such a fun age’. The book was easy to read but missing something…the premise was good but missing something. I read it super quick but I think it’s sort of like those movies that show all the good parts in the trailer? No suggestions on great books this year as I’ve read about 20 but nothing with wow quality. I also laughed about Christina Lauren because I have read about 5 of hers in the last year and thought it was you that suggested them! Thanks for these reviews in this crazy crazy times!!
Mix and Match Mama says
What was it missing? I can’t put my finger on it…but something. Right? Just something wasn’t there that I missed.
Chelsea says
I am wanting to read more books by Meg Mitchell Moore because one of your favorite authors (and mine!), Elin Hilderbrand, recommended some books of hers recently. Unfortunately, our library is closed indefinitely and I dislike spending money on books so I’m impatiently waiting for them to open their doors again. Thanks for the recommendations!
Alexis says
I loved The Friend Zone. I guess I didn’t think it was as light as you did…don’t get me wrong, it’s not like American Dirt or anything, ha, but I did think that with the infertility issues, it had more depth than a typical chick-lit book like Christina Lauren’s (although I love their books!). I just thought The Friend Zone was deeper than that.
You need to read The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker. SO good!!! I think you’d love it.
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s probably because I read some really heavy books this month, I just kept thinking as I read it “Hallmark movie” which, don’t get me wrong are my favorite, I just wanted a bigger twist in the end or something unexpected. I thought it was good though!
Amanda @ That Inspired Chick says
My favorite Christina Lauren book was The Unhoneymooners and none of the others have QUITE lived up to it for me! I loved The Friend Zone too! Both of those were in my top 3 chick lit novels last year!

I recently read “Evvie Drake is Starting Over” by Linda Holmes. It still reads like a Hallmark movie, but I think it’s a bit “meatier” than most rom-coms. I also really liked “The Bookish Life of Nina Hill” by Abbi Waxman and “The Last Time I Lied” by Riley Sager. Thank you for this post today!! It was a bright light for me.
Allison says
Just wanted to thank you for including the ratings on ALL your books now… It really makes it helpful!
Melissa says
Would you say The Wives is R rated as well?
Always my favorite post of the month! Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
Hmmm…I would probably say PG-13. There are some naughty words and a lot of things are implied, but it’s not as R as some of the others I read this month.
Elspeth says
Great suggestions. I am looking for new books. I agree with Christine Lauren, great books but predictable.

I comment the same thing every month 🙂 but please, please, please put Joshilyn Jackson on your list of authors to read. I have LOVED every single book I’ve read of hers. Start with Someone Else’s Love Story. She writes with such wit, her characters are vivid and stay with you long after you’ve finished reading, and there’s almost always a little unexpected twist in her books. They aren’t fluff, but they make you feel happy! She is, hands down, my favorite author.
Mix and Match Mama says
I just put it on my list!!
Lorena says
I was super excited to read Such a fun age but halfway through the book I couldn’t get myself into it. I’m struggling to finish it, it has a good storyline but something is missing for me. Maybe I’ll try again ??♀️.
Mix and Match Mama says
After reading everyone else’s comments, I say move on to something else.
Robin says
Big Lies in a Small Town by Dianne Chamberlain. So good !
Megan Patti says
Boy Swallows Universe – not something I would normally go for, but it was great and it sucks you right away!
Nancy Crain says
The Dutch House
Gina says
In Five Years by Rebecca Serle was great! Highly recommend.
Lori says
Also, read On The Bright Side this month and loved it. Melanie is so gifted and hilarious as always! And thanks again for your monthly book review – always look forward to this each month. Taking notes for my future reads…
Jennifer Wilder says
Out of all the books you’ve read (or can remember) what would be your suggestion for a feel good fiction for times like these when our spirits need either a laugh or a good love story?
Mix and Match Mama says
I love Elin Hilderbrand 🙂 . She is my FAVORITE author and all of her books will make you happy!
Robyn says
I agree. I don’t know what the deal is w Such a Fun Age. It needed more. It had the racial tension but the plot it’s hung upon is so weak. A nanny at grocery store late at night. Weak to start with – seemed to have weak plausibility. The characters were all very hard to like as well. I don’t know. I didn’t love it. I do know it’s already been picked up by Lena Waithe for TV series.
And American Dirt is on my list. It has some controversy surrounding it. Latino writers weren’t thrilled w the author. I’m curious. Always love your book reviews.
Mix and Match Mama says
I was afraid no one would understand my feelings with Such a Fun Age, so I’m relieved to know I’m not alone!!
Katie says
I just read Regretting You by Colleen Hoover and loved it!!! I am reading the Wives now!
Jennibell says
LOVE your book reviews. Love them. Now that you’ve read American Dirt maybe you should go back to some of the controversy for balance. It shouldn’t take away from your feelings, I don’t think, just give you perspective.
About the disappointments…we are in a season of them, aren’t we? Praying for your family and all those affected, whether with the virus, their livelihood, isolation, anger, and disappointment. Our children are looking up to us and our reactions will shape them, I really believe this. I think the uncertainty is the hardest part for me right now. I’m a planner :). And look at it with your adult perspective – do you *really* remember your 5th grade graduation? Your kindergarten dance recital? They seem “big” now but in five years….not so much. Your kids WILL remember this extra time at home, when they did “school at home” when you were together more….and those reunuions will be even sweeter when they happen 🙂
Thank you for your review and blessings as you struggle to “balance it all”.

I recently read Orphan Train. Loved it.
Jen says
In Bloom By Katie Delahanty and Autumn in the City of Angels by Kirby Howell (2 authors writing as one)

The Keeper of Lost Things
Have You Seen Luis Velez
Take Me With You
Loved your book reviews!! <3
Shirley says
The Keeper of Lost Things is by Ruth Hogan. There’s another book series by the same name – I haven’t read those!
Julie says
My favorite post of the month! I love your suggestions and getting new ones. Thank you for sharing light. Praying that God intervenes and heals our country. I have to suggest Kate Stewart. I have read her underdog series and they are SO good. The Guy on the right, The guy on the left and the guy in the middle was just released. I know the title is kinda funny but they are really good chick lit. R rated but great stories. I couldn’t put them down and want to read more from her. I loved the friend zone and can’t wait to read her new book The Happily Ever After Playlist. There is so much hype about that one! I have to disagree with you on Open Book. I listened to her on audible and liked her before but came away being totally turned off. She seems to not be in tune with reality at all and seems spoiled and whiny. I was so disappointed in her lack of will to work on her marriage with Nick. I felt it was selfishness, immaturity and so incredibly sad that she was basically over it and wanted out. Can’t wait to read some of these and read all of the suggestions others leave you.
Mix and Match Mama says
Yay!!!! My favorite post too!!!
Cindy Bruemmer says
I have to agree with you on Such a Fun Age, it was just kind of meh! I had high hopes for it, but it just kind of fell flat. I’m glad to see someone agrees, since it got such high reviews!
Mara Kreiling says
Completely agree about Christina Lauren’s books. They are all SO predictable (like the ones that involve a “surprise” pregnancy… that you could see coming…. b/c it’s foreshadowed ). Cute and good chick lit but maybe not have the plot so transparent!
Sheri says
Have you read ,The Dearly Beloved? It was so good.
Leigh says
I LOVE about 1/2 of Christina Lauren’s books and the rest are meh, the older ones – yuck! Remind me which ones you’ve read and I’ll give you some recs. Thanks for this list! We need it right now.
Ashley says
Have you read In Five Years? Same author as The Dinner List, which I haven’t read but saw on your review and have it on my “wish list”. In Five Years is so good. It’s an easy read – I read it one day (sorry family). But, it is so good! Such a clever spin on the age old question of “where do you see yourself in five years?” I could not put it down!!
Erica says
My favorite post! I just ordered American Dirt and am currently going through the comment section filling my Amazon cart with all the great recommendations!
Have you read anything by Sejal Badani? The Storyteller’s Secret is one of the best books I’ve ever read, I think of it often….. and Trail of Broken Wings is also very good. I recently finished The Tuscan Child by Rhys Bowen and was pleasantly surprised, loved it!
Kristen says
Last summer I read all three books by an author whose kids go to m school in Birmingham, Alabama. Her name is Lauren K. Denton. All of the books take place in Alabama and are usually set in the summer. The are sweet stories with really well-developed characters and are super PG. You could feel good recommending them to anyone and even Kensington might enjoy reading one with you. Hope you’ll check them out! Her 4th one comes out in June!
Nancy S says
My favorite post! I also loved American Dirt. While still appreciating there may be faults, the story she told was so important for people to read. Before the tour was cancelled, the author spoke at Politics and Prose bookstore in DC, and you can watch the presentation on their site. Two recommendations: Long Bright River by Liz Moore and Writers and Lovers by Lily King. Both were very compelling reads, and Writers and Lovers, in particular, was beautifully written.
Finally, for anyone running out of books to read or wanting more immediate access to newer books, scrib’d is offering a free 30 day membership without having to provide a credit card.

Thank you shay for your recommendations…I love this post of yours as well as all the recommendations by everyone else…thanks to you ladies, I read The silent Patient, An unwanted Guest and The Roomies, all of which I enjoyed a lot…next plan to read In five years as it comes highly recommended here. xx
Rebecca says
Sea of tranquility and the bronze horseman (a trilogy) are the best books I’ve EVER read. We have very similar taste based on your reviews if it helps :). Also – about these two- by the description you wouldn’t necessarily think they’d be as good as they are – but TRUST me. And read the reviews too if that helps sway you!!
Loved loved loved American dirt btw- thanks for recommending- bought it the day you put out your post and finished it by the next day! Will stay with me for a very long time.
Emily Domeyer says
Love reading your monthly reviews! Added some to my list! One favorite of mine that I read this month was Jar of Hearts!
Sherry says
Hi Shay, I’ve been picking all my reads through your monthly reviews for awhile now, and it seems like you should get credit for those. Alas, I have a Nook eReader so must leave your sight with my list and go to Barnes and Noble to order. Is there an easy way for you to add a Barnes and Noble link so you can get a small commission. On purchases? I’m sure I’m not the only one who can’t use Amazon to order my books.
Also, I’m sure sorry for Kensington’s diagnosis but look forward to more GF recipes from you!!!

Song of a Broken Heart by Lora Jones
She’s a Christian lady who went through great loss. It really made me evaluate what I’m doing to serve the Lord.

Ok I just finished Beach Read by Emily Henry and I think you would really like it! It has all of the components to make up a good happy book to get lost in!!
