Hey friends! HAPPY THURSDAY!
Okay, anyone else needing a few new ideas for working out/staying active at home right now?
The last time I posted about working out at home was over two years ago…and honestly, most things have stayed the same. The only difference now? I don’t have any outside of the house choices, so I’m really having to hone in on what I’m doing here (and try to not get bored). I thought I could share some of my ideas and then maybe you could share yours too? Andrew and I are clearly getting desperate/bored/creative as last week he did yoga with me and I did two strength classes with him. When he asked me to do a strength class with him, I actually said “you’re not going to yell at me, right?”. Haha! He didn’t. I have never lifted weights with Andrew before and 100% assumed he did this…
…he did not 😉 .
Seriously, go back and look at this post again if you haven’t seen it in a while…
…because I still like it BUT in the meantime, her are some of the current things I’ve been doing…
#1: I’ve been waking up early and making it a priority before my kids get up. The first week of staying at home, I was taking advantage of the “nowhere to be” and sleeping later. The problem with me is that once my kids wake up, they present me with approximately 4 million reasons why I should be doing something else besides working out, so I wasn’t being very consistent or it was hanging over my head all day (I hate when things hang over my head). The second week we were at home, I started waking up early again and having my coffee, reading my Bible, working out and taking a shower BEFORE they woke up which just made my day seem so much better!
#2: We’ve been making an effort to do PE each day. My kids’ school gives them daily PE suggestions but they also are allowing us some creativity/flexibility to do what works for our family. I’ve been making an effort to make sure my kids read, write and do math, so I started making an effort to make sure we did PE things too.
We have gone on a lot of walks, bike rides, scavenger hunts, hit the volleyball, shot the basketball, played with a kickball…we have played outside. On a few days, we even had enough warm weather to…
…swim! But for the most part, our days have been spent outside…
…walking around our neighborhood or doing stuff on our driveway that involves both PE and even some school work…
#3: My favorite workout app is still Peloton! You do not have to have a bike in order to have the app. Right now, I’m cycling a few days a week but then also doing their yoga classes (Kristin and Anna are my favorite!) and their strength classes (with and without Andrew!). I like a variety of the weight instructors but really like all of their “plans” where you can for instance, pick like a 6 week ab blast schedule and every day, it gives you a new class to do (all 5 to 10 minutes long) or you can pick a strength training schedule, running schedule, etc. If you allow notifications on your phone, it reminds you to do these things every day. I really like going to the gym (normally) and having someone tell me what to do (I’m not a good self-motivator at the gym), so having the instructors tell me via the app every day REALLY helps me.
#4: I am still pinning my favorite workout stuff on Pinterest too! You can see that board below. There are so many easy (and free) ideas!
Okay, a lot of randomness, but that’s how I’m staying active which for me, helps keep me positive and upbeat during the day. In the past, I’ve used a variety of different apps and Youtube videos (Beachbody is a great one!). If there are some you love, please share! As much as I love the Peloton app, I would also love to shake things up and try different options too! Let me know what you love!
Side note, I had a sweet blog reader suggest we have a dog race and so yesterday, that was part of our “PE” time. I posted the video on my IG stories but it was a super fun way to get outside and going before school…
…Frenchie won, Poppy was a very close second and Yankee had no idea what was going on 😉 .
See you guys tomorrow!

Your active at home post from a couple of years ago is one of my favorites! I’ll have to go back and look at it again for some more motivation. One question- is there anything on the Peloton app that doesn’t require any equipment or mat at all? I have the 3 month free trial right now and haven’t really used it because I didn’t find anything that didn’t require at least a little bit of weights, bands, etc. I’ve been thinking of buying an exercise mat for quite a while, but just haven’t done it. And truthfully, I haven’t spent a lot of time looking through the app.
Mix and Match Mama says
YES!! The yoga classes, body weight classes, the outdoor running classes, there are stretching classes, ab workouts…yes!
Dana says
Thanks!! I’ll go check it out much better than what I previously had. 🙂
Lindsay says
Hi Dana,
I’m using the free Peloton app right now too! I’m using the outdoor WALKING classes (I find them under the “Outdoor” option). I’ve also done several of the yoga and core workouts. I didn’t use a yoga mat and they didn’t require any weights. I hope you like it as much as I do! I’m a beginner and these have been great for me.
Regina Moorman says
I started a FB page! Fitness and Social Distance- Let’s Get Moving! I invited a bunch of ladies of all ages and fitness levels (then they invited their friends) It has been the most Amazing thing!!
We challenge and encourage each other every day for the last (we hope) 30 days of this craziness!
30 minutes a day is all we ask. Do whatever your thing is and check in with a post! We do mini challenges along the way!
It’s been life changing! Bless up??
Christine says
I have heard Brooke Burke has an inexpensive app that allows you to do a 10\20\30 min workout. She designed for busy moms.
Erika Slaughter says
Would it surprise you if I told you I was cheering for Frenchie the whole time?
Mix and Match Mama says
I just LOL because of course you were!
Danielle says
Good Morning! I love Peloton too and use the app! How do you schedule programs?! That is amazing!
Mix and Match Mama says
You need to go to the app (or bike) and find a program you want under the “programs” tab (on the app, it’s at the bottom).
Lindsay says
How do you say “count me in” or something similar to get the notifications on your phone? I see to view program but i still have to click the class or bookmark it. After reading this *awesome* blog, I tried chatting with Peloton support but they were confused. Any idea?
Mix and Match Mama says
For me, when I start one of their programs, I give the app permission to send me notifications and then every day, it does!
Courtney Marie says
Our boot camp that we go to is offering classes via Instagram live Monday to Friday at 5pm EST and Saturday mornings at 9am EST. It’s SO nice to be able to keep that part of our routine and it seriously feels like the trainers are right there with us which helps keep us motivated. Their classes are seriously the best and every day it’s different. Check them out on Instagram: @blairsbootcamp Everyone is welcome to join! (And you have 24 hours to view the classes if 5pm isn’t the best time for you).
Kelly Sites says
I love Heather Robertson on You Tube. She has 20 min weight workouts and a million other ones. I do her arm workout every single day. I also love Sarah Beth Yoga for a great yoga stretch or workout daily.
Mix and Match Mama says
Okay, I need to look up both ladies!
Kelly says
I do BBG by Kayla Itsines. It’s a 12 week, at home workout. You need minimal equipment and it only takes 30 mins. I have 2 boys (3&4 years old) so I need things to be short & effective! It’s a circuit program. It’s set up to workout MWF and then T/TH/Sat you do a form of LISS for 35-45 mins. I always choose to walk while the boys ride their bikes. Happy Thursday!
Mix and Match Mama says
I did that for a while and loved it! It’s a really awesome program!!
Mollie Lieux says
If you haven’t done the 30 minute Greatest Showman ride go do it!!! I did an on demand ride from 2018 and it was so much fun!!!!! Hard but fun! Ha!
Mix and Match Mama says
I’ve done it TWICE! That one is so much fun!!!!!
Alexis deZayas says
We’ve been rollerblading and it’s SO much fun!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I would kill myself but GOOD FOR YOU GUYS!!!
Christy says
I LOVE everything about this! I enjoy the Tone It Up videos on youtube. They also have an app and it’s nice because the workouts are categorized. Quick question, do you guys follow a daily schedule for school? I am curious on ways to make our days at home run more smoothly! Have a great day!!!!
Sarah Nienhuis says
Our local Burn BootCamp is doing all of their classes over a live Zoom call. They watch your form, encourage you to do more…it’s almost like you are at the class! They also rented out their weights and equipment so you can have gear during the classes.
Mix and Match Mama says
Love that!!!
caitlin s davies says
I included a link hopefully it works to a free 20 minute mommy and me workout from glow body PT for all the moms out there! She has 3 children who are all in the video. She has a lot of free workouts including a free 21 day challenge with clickable videos. Glowbody PT was created by Ashley Keller who is former army with great efficient workouts. I have really been enjoying and thankful for them especially during this season we are going through!
Sara Burnette says
I have a great workout app suggestion for you! Aaptiv is an audio fitness app that is just awesome. It has everything- running, strength, yoga, cycling, meditation (the sleep meditations are amazing), Pilates, etc. It has programs and challenges within the app. I’ve been using it for almost 2 years and it’s saving me during this at home time. It’s a bargain at $99/year but it’s been half off – I signed up again for the year at half off. I haven’t tried Peloton because it’s a little pricey but maybe I’ll check it out, I heard they have 90 days free! I hope you check out Aaptiv! ?
Mix and Match Mama says
Writing it down! I’m going to check all of these out!
Jill says
Yankee was hilarious and Smith’s reaction to his dog was even more funny! I use the pop sugar fitness videos on youtube, they have tons of variety and most are between 25-35 mins. I have also been using the Kira Stokes app. If you don’t follow her on Instagram you should. She gives tons of little workout snack movements and has recently been doing IG live workouts with her clients a few days a week.
I am still trying to work myself up to waking up early to workout and get organized for the day. Your are my motivation, someday I will get there!
Happy Thursday!
Mix and Match Mama says
That dog had no clue what was going on!!!
Ahna @ Hammers N Hugs says
Thankfully this hasn’t thrown my workout routine off as I haven’t been to a gym in over a decade, but I really feel for people who love working out with friends. This is so hard for them. Hang in there if if you’re reading this and that’s you! Zach and I have been slowly creating our own home gym over the years. I do 2 days a week of fasted cardio (love p90x30 which are all 30 min workouts, or YouTube for HIIT workouts), and then 2 days of strength training which I create myself but again YouTube has great at home strength training plans too. My husband loves the app 6 Pack in 30 Days and basically starts over each month. I believe abs start in the kitchen, but that app definitely helps ?.
Nicole Sherman says
Love the Jillian Michaels app!
Jess Wade says
I don’t have a Peloton bike or tread, but during this “stay at home” time they are letting new users use the app for free for 90 days! Like Shay said, the app has a wide variety of great classes and you just watch the video and do what they do!
I also discovered Health House on Instagram. Since people can’t come to their gyms right now, they post live workouts on their IG stories every day. You can do it live with them or do it later (the videos stay up 24 hours). It’s like you’re at a class with an instructor and they’re upbeat, great music and I’ve been LOVING them! Tough workouts, but it’s been very effective for me. You can use weights, but all the exercises can be done body weight as well, so no equipment needed.
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s awesome! I didn’t know that?!
Margaret says
Very timely post! I’m doing zumba via zoom with the instructor I’ve used for quite a while, but I’ve thought about branching out.
Laci says
The dog race was the highlight of my day!
Mix and Match Mama says
Hahaha! Mine too!
Sue says
I have used FitnessBlender workouts on YouTube for years and love them. They have a website too which helps you easily find the workout you want. They have tons of all different kinds of workouts. They are the best!
Emily says
My absolute favorite at home workouts! I love the programs they offer as well because they are super affordable and I don’t have to think about what workout to do!
Meagan says
I started using the Fit52 app for workouts. It was designed by Carrie Underwood and her trainer. They offer different options depending on length and skill level. You can sign up for a 2 week free trial period. It’s been a great way to stay motivated and active.?
Alexa Jae says
I’ve been like you going on lots of walks but to get an actual workout I’ve been using Obé. All of the classes (besides yoga) are 28 minutes or they have express classes that are 10 minutes! I’ve been doing it during my lunch break and it has been perfect.
Mary says
Which yoga class do you do?
Mix and Match Mama says
I like to do their 45 minute advanced or intermediate classes with a variety of their instructors.
Hannah Dobberstein says
HASfit on Youtube is also a great free resource! They have all kinds of different programs with minimum equipment required. It’s also done by a wife and husband, so caters to both males and females, if you and Andrew want to work out together ?
Tammy says
Can you or have you already done a post on sports bras? Searching for good quality with support!
Thanks!!
Mix and Match Mama says
My very, very favorite is the hyper focused one from Athleta!!
Jodi says
I am loving the Down Dog App for Yoga!
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s what it’s called? Writing that one down too!
NicoleinWI says
I have been using DailyBurn which has a 60 free trial, lots of equipment free options and they have a new workout everyday.
Through weight watchers I got a 90 day subscription to obé fitness app – they have live classes all morning long that help make you feel like you are doing it with people. The lighted box is fun too. (Also most can be done sans equipment) oh and the dance classes are super mood lifting.
Finally the FitOn app is free and has tons of great options for everyone!
Sarah Langley says
I recently downloaded the Peloton app.
And I LOVE it!!! I love how it coordinates with my Apple Watch, and how I can schedule workouts. I’ve also done some of the cardio dance workouts with my daughter, and we have had so much fun!! The strength training is legit. I did the arm one and I was so sore for 2 days!! I am loving all the options!!
Sheaffer Sims says
“Are you going to yell at me?” I laughed out loud.
Mix and Match Mama says
You understand though, right?! You know him!
Jill says
I love seeing all of the outside options you have! We are kinda limited to inside activities because the weather has been in the 30’s! We do manage to get some walking in on the warmer days in our subdivision…our doggies are LOVING that we are home and can go on walks!!!
katarina kneer says
The Orangetheory app! You can access their at-home workouts even if you are not a member. They list all of their previous videos online as well!
Talia says
My gym is offering virtual workouts, which I love! Like you, I go on a lot of walks. Also, the FitOn app is really great. I enjoy Cassey Ho – Blogilates on YouTube as well. So many great options for working out when you can’t get to the gym. (but I really miss my gym and the classes they offer. I love group fitness!)
Cheri Bliss says
I have been doing Refit at home for over a year now. Three women in Waco, Texas started it. They have videos on You Tube and you can also workout live with Refit on Demand. It is very similar to Zumba.
Jen Sickle says
I love the PIYO classes on Beach Body with Charlene Johnson.
Elspeth says
It has been so hard to stay active while at home. I’ve been going on walks, and doing free weights as well as always moving and trying not to sit still for too long.

I am loving the SWEAT app. There are multiple trainers for different workout styles. I find them challenging, which I love! There are ‘at home’ programs too!
Caroline Zielinski says
SHAY, I love blogilates videos on YouTube. She has great workouts and many don’t need any equipment at all. I just got the peloton app because I really like to create my own strength circuits. Is there an instructor for strength that you have liked so far?
Mix and Match Mama says
I like her too!!!!! I even have her app on my phone!! YES! For strength, I’m not as partial to any certain trainer…Robin, of course, is great, I also like Emma Lovewell too!
Kayla Bruce says
Love, love Bad Yogi Studio with Erin Motz website/app. She is currently running a free 14 day trial, and there are SO MANY (over 200) different types of yoga classes in there for every type of yogi.
Lisa Sipe says
I use to go to an hour long Step Class which I sorely miss! So I have been doing Leslie Sansone Walk videos! She’s so motivating and does brisk walking workouts. I’m doing 3-5 miles and literally am drenched at the end. I burn 400-500 calories in 45 minutes!
Kelli Franz says
Tone It Up app….it’s free right now too! ?
Laura says
I’m a Les Mills on Demand devotee and they always have free trials if you want to give it a shot. They have dance, kickboxing, weight training, aerobics, HIIT, and more. Their kids section (Born to Move) is always free and they’re great age appropriate workouts for kids on days you can’t be outside. One of my favorite trainers to follow, Don Saladino (he trains Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively among lots of others) is putting up free bodyweight workouts daily on his IG (@donsaladino). They’re fabulous and totally things the average person can do at home – and no yelling!
kristen cheney says
I love the Les Mills on demand app. It has biking, yoga, body pump (my favorite), body attack, HIIT workouts, barre, etc. so much variety. It has been a great for at home. I am trying to do one of those and get a walk in everyday just to clear my head after distance teaching.
Heather says
Would love to follow you on Peleton! Will you share your handle?
Mix and Match Mama says
I occasionally ride under @mixandmatchmama for fun but 99% of the time I ride under something else. I’m going to try and incorporate more under the mama handle during this time!
Leslie H. says
Tie Dye! Socks, shirts, easy for most ages!
Get out Halloween costumes and have a parade!
Mix and Match Mama says
My kids would love that!
Colleen says
I have been trying to talk myself into getting up early to workout because otherwise I put everything the kids need me for first! I use Nike Fit Club sometimes to mix things up at home. I sure miss my gym people though; I’ve always done so much better in group fitness classes!
Laura W says
One thing that might be fun for the kids (it’s fun for me as an adult) is to take a deck of playing cards and assign each suit an exercise (e.g., hearts – jumping jacks, clubs – situps, diamonds – pushups, spades – high knees) then you have each kid draw a card and they do the number of reps the card says for that suit’s exercise. As an adult you go through the whole deck on your own, but if you have all four kids doing it, it makes it more manageable. The exercises I listed above are just examples and could be changed/modified based on age, skill level, etc.
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s clever!!
Jen Cole says
I’m so desperate for nice weather in our neck of the woods! Our kids have not gone outside in at least a week……we’ve had rain, sleet, ice, snow, a low of 12 degrees yesterday…….it’s been so hard being cooped up in the house!!! 🙁
Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog says
I need to follow your example! With all the gyms closed, I’ve been a slob… literally just laying around lol! ❤️✨

I love Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube – she’s easy to follow, and really funny too!

I like her too!!!!

This is a great topic and looking forward to seeing what everyone has been trying. My sons are both athletes. My oldest is a college football player so I have been collecting olympic weight plates from anywhere and anyone. We have a weight room set up in the garage. I normally run and do P90X. My boys are doing workouts from their high school and college athletic trainers and have even been doing P90X. I have been lifting weights with them for something different. My brother is a personal trainer in Wisconsin and since his gym is closed, he posts daily metabolic workouts that I share on my FB page. I would like to get to a set schedule instead of a lot of randomness. I look forward to reading everyone’s input. Thank you!!!!
Ashleigh D says
I’m really enjoying The Sculpt Society app by Megan Roup. She also provides a first month calendar for beginners, so you know exactly what to do each day. Highly recommend!
Joanne says
We rely on hiking whenever our weather is nice and typically hike for at least an hour… lately it has been cold, rainy, high wind advisories, and even snow flurries so I really am feeling stuck. I have tons of exercise DVD’s and options but nothing motivates me as much as getting outside. That dog race sounds so fun.
Raylene says
Do you actually have the Peloton bike, or just the app? Pure Barre has a free 7 day trial and their classes have always been a favorite, and Kelsey Lee on YouTube is great too!
Mix and Match Mama says
I have the bike too!
Tasha says
The Nike training club app!!! Usually they have free workouts and premium workouts(that you pay for) but with everything going on they have made all of the premium workouts free. You can filter it by type- endurance, strength, mobility(yoga) or by equipment-none, basic, full. There are ones that are videos with an instructor leading you or “whiteboard workouts” that just give you the exercises to work through!
Dana says
I am a big group fitness class person (give me all the Les Mills!) and haven’t ridden on the road since moving to a new city/state 5 years ago. My husband and I recently dusted off our bikes and joined a local bike challenge. We have three young kids so we have to trade off ride times. The Strava app helps keep me motivated because there are also challenges available on there. One of my favorites was a challenge to run/ride all the streets in your neighborhood. The map looked so cool when it was finished. When you finish a challenge, you earn a digital trophy, which is always fun. It has kept me active during this time and we’ve found that we really love a lot of the bike trails in our “new” area. I also have met up with a neighborhood mom here and there to ride since keeping appropriate social distance is easy while biking. Afterwards, we get a nice chit-chat from across the street to talk about all our homeschooling mishaps.
Taylor says
Yes I love the Peloton app! I do 3 back to back 20 minute body weight workouts to get my 60 minutes in and it’s the best way to get my heart rate up. I’ve also been walking A LOT. I don’t know what it is but going on walks makes me feel like life is a little bit “normal.”
Mix and Match Mama says
I haven’t done them consecutively before, great idea!
Raquel Whatley says
I love Kira Stokes. I did HIIT type workouts for years but just don’t want to kill myself and my body like that anymore. Kira has a way of sneaking cardio in to her classes. You’ll be sweating and wonder how because you never left the ground. Her workout has been good for the knees. Your blog is my treat from work mid day.. Thank you!

Did Andrew shave his head? Were getting to the point that my husband needs a haircut and I’m clearly not a barber/hairstylist so his might get shaved!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yup. Ha!

The Bar Method studio I go to is offering IG Live classes and I’m also loving the Peloton app. Shay, who are your favorite instructors on the app for strength training classes or even body weight classes? I’ve only tried the yoga and stretching classes. Thanks!
Katie says
The Nike+ app is great – I’ve used it for years. I’m using both Peloton and Nike+. I like Nike’s bodyweight strength classes. And, it’s got a free premium trial going on now for COVID. We do the workouts as a family – 2 toddlers, dogs, hubs …haha!
Paige E says
I am really loving BeachBody 100 Workouts with Jericho right now. I am on my 2nd time through. Its been the longest I’ve stuck with a routine in a long time. I get up super early and do a workout M-F and then on the weekends just try to stay active with riding bikes, walking and yard work. It works for me. The workouts are never more than 30 min and they are never a repeat, the music is good and it mixes up yoga, weights, and cardio. Highly recommend!
Meg says
I have been doing the Beach Body programs for over a year now and I love them! There are so many to choose from and they are great no matter what your age, skill/fitness level, ect. My hubby and I do them in our basement each morning together (even though we are doing different programs). It’s cheaper than the gym and so easy to wake up and do :-). It also comes with a coach to help you choose the programs you want to do and nutrition programs 😉

Well when we didn’t have snow…yes snow still… we were outside picking up sticks, walking and getting garden ready. Indoors we play the Wii. We bought the Michael Jackson Experience Dance off ebay (before all the craziness we’ve had it since January). LOVE IT!!! It is so much fun to sing along. LOL!! Although…some are tougher to sing since they require more thought (I mean I can’t like MJ) and energy. LOL!!! We like the other Just Dance as well, but this one is so much fun…plus kiddos get to listen and do the Thriller dance!!! LOL!!!
I just saw this posted to our local library… thought the new homeschool families could use. I think we will spell different names or hey spelling words. https://www.730sagestreet.com/spell-your-name-workout/

I really love BarreAlley! Kendra is a former gymnast and mom of three. She puts together great workouts that are easy to do at home. I just need to get motivated to get back into. As a mom and Corporate Event Planner who has, well, nothing to plan, I’m floundering a bit. I’m not a morning person, but may give your morning routine a try. You’re right- once the kids are up it’s really hard to get my own things done. Thanks for sharing!

I find the quarantine has helped me get creative and out of a rut of always doing the same classes at my gym. I started running again (or plodding ha) once a week and have created some of my own routines. My gym started doing Live classes 2 weeks ago and that has been fantastic too. I’m actually working out a little more now – life is slower (while also more hectic) so I’m finding more time???

We’re still getting cold weather and even a little snow where I live… which makes staying home all day every day so hard! I look forward to the days we can play outside and go on family walks and bike rides! Enjoy your warm Texas weather for me! 🙂

Quick Question
Do the children have designated play clothes? Meaning when they come home from school they take off school clothes and then put on play clothes?
Mix and Match Mama says
When they go to school, they stay in those clothes all day long.

Hi, I also love the Peloton App (I have the bike & the tread) & I do the sweat app.
I’m wondering about post workout sweaty hair ?
I too like to wash my hair at night so it can mostly air dry. I don’t have a set workout time of the day, usually decided by our busy family schedule for the day.
You mentioned that you workout early & shower before kids wake up.. do you have a trick to combating the sweaty hair from your workout without washing it until bedtime.
By the way, the dry bar shower cap is great for when you’re trying to keep hair from getting wet in the rinse off version of showering! It’s lined with a terry material.
Thanks for any tips!!

Hi Shay, I was wondering if you ended up keeping your Apple 5 Watch? I have a Keiser bike and use the Peloton App, but saw that the watch can be used for metrics with the App now.

I’ve googled and searched all over the app, how the heck do I get class notifications on my phone? I want to do the 4 week and crusher class and there isn’t a place to sign up or anything, it just lists the classes. Help! Sincerely, Peloton Obsessed ?
Mix and Match Mama says
Do you get Peloton notifications on your phone? I get them on my watch too. Do you get just the normal notifications about anything? When I start a class, for instance, my watch automatically syncs up and starts tracking my heart, my calories, etc from the app.
