Happy Tuesday, friends!
Okay, today’s post is about something that I’ve only recently learned to love and appreciate.
Dry shampoo.
Up until about two months ago, I just wasn’t really a dry shampoo girl. I would hear my friends talk about it, buy different versions, try them, but never really use them. I really always just thought it was easier to wash my hair than use dry shampoo. I mean, don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing I enjoy more than skipping a hair washin’, but when push came to shove, I was in the camp of “I’d rather wash my hair than it feel sticky and ick because of dry shampoo”. So, I had bottles and bottles but didn’t really use them.
And then we had a global pandemic.
And then I had absolutely NO PLACE TO GO.
And then my roots grew out, my hair was icky at the ends, and I literally could have cared less about washing it.
And then, I tried dried shampoo again under these conditions.
And now, I’m obsessed.
Back in the day, I would wash my hair on let’s say Monday and then again Wednesday, Friday and probably Saturday night (for church the next morning) and repeat. Um, well, since I stay at home, see no one and do not care any longer, giving dry shampoo a go seemed more reasonable than constantly washing my hair for no reason.
These three are my new holy grail of dry shampoos…
#1: Drybar’s Triple Sec
For years, whenever I’ve mentioned dry shampoo, I’ve always told you ladies that my favorite was Drybar’s Triple Sec…which isn’t even really a dry shampoo 😉 . I actually think the reason I’ve liked it for so long is just that…I can spray it on my roots and it doesn’t leave that gritty, icky feel on my scalp (because it’s not technically dry shampoo). In the past whenever I needed a little pick me up, wanted my hair to smell really nice (the blanc scent is AMAZING!!!), give it some volume (either when wearing my hair down or gathering it up for a ponytail), I would spray this on. I always use it on dry hair (not wet) and either at the end of the day when I need to give my clean hair some oomph or on day two (or three) for some lift and volume. I’ve been told by several ladies at Drybar that it can also double as a hairspray too (but I always use this hairspray instead). So, it really is a multipurpose spray (and did I mention the smell?!).
About a year ago though, I had several of you suggest I try…
#2: First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo
Now this stuff, made me realize that sometimes, a dry shampoo can be almost as good as shampooing. I really love this Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo and have been using it on all of my day two hair since you told me about it. You really need to read the reviews because they’re so well stated, but this is cool because the charcoal really absorbs any oils you have, it doesn’t leave a gray/white residue that often comes with dry shampoo, has a nice light scent and I can brush through it after spraying and my hair doesn’t feel gritty or gross (just clean). I typically just give my roots one or two sprays, brush through it and then can style my second day hair. Easy!
Okay though, I was totally sold on this one and not looking for any others until I started seeing all of the reviews about…
#3: Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam
Holy cow, this stuff is COOL!!! I’ve never been so excited about a dry shampoo until this one!! I have been telling my friends, my mom, my sister-in-law, basically if you have hair, I’m telling you to try this stuff. It’s hard to explain because it’s a mousse that goes on wet and dries right away and actually cleans your hair (verses just soaking up the oils). I made a very short little demo video for you to see because it’s too weird/crazy/fantastic for you not to see in person…
Whew! That’s cool, right?! I laughed at myself when I watched the video back because you can clearly see my enthusiasm. Haha! I am practically giddy over it!
I love finding silver linings in life and I guess you could say, being stuck at home as made me find the joys of dry shampoo 😉 .
Just in case you were wondering, I still love the Keune shampoo and conditioner for days when I really want to wash my hair. Sometimes, it’s really hard to find though, so in April I tried this one along with the corresponding conditioner and love them too! Not only do they both smell amazing, I feel like my hair has been super hydrated as well (even with all of the chlorine I’ve been subjecting my hair to recently!). So, there’s that too!
Okay, have you tried any of these? Have you tried the mousse??? Is there another I need to try??? I always love your feedback! In the meantime, have the BEST Tuesday!! xo
Lauren says
Have you ever tried Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray? It sounds really similar to the Drybar one. I was wondering how they compare? I love the Oribe and would totally give the Triplesec a try!
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes!! I have! I have used it on and off for years. I like the way Drybar’s smells better (though Oribe’s smells good) and pick it up 8 out of 10 times verses the Oribe.
Angela says
No to be a negative Nellie, but be careful with dry shampoo. I was using several days a week and started noticing bald/thin spots in my hair. The dermatologist said it’s not for everyday use. It will kill hair follicles and cause thinning in the hairlines. It took several months for my hair to return to normal. I only use in special situations now.
Lauren says
I was all set a few weeks ago to check out online at Sephora with the foaming dry shampoo but the reviews were terrible so I decided to skip it. I wash my hair 3 days a week, normally (pretty much only wash if I have plans to leave the house, this was before Covid), but even so my hair gets super oily on day two – it’s terrible. Dry Shampoo never worked for me. So I thought the foam would. Maybe they have a trial size I can test!
Mix and Match Mama says
Try that and see! I was super skeptical but I honest to goodness love it!
Darcy says
I’m gonna have to try both of these. I was a never a dry shampoo person really until all of this and I’ve now gotten my hair trained and can go almost 4 days. I used to think people were crazy when they said you have to train your hair. Kenra makes a mousse too and I was kind of giddy excited like you about it but it really works!!!
Erika Slaughter says
I haven’t tried the mousse in that brand but I’ll have to. I tried another brand and wasn’t a fan but that Ouai is supposed to be so good.
Beth Knecht says
I am not a dry shampoo girl and keep trying to become one! I wash my hair and dry it everyday, which takes about an hour. Blah! I’m intrigued by the mousse; I need to give that a try because I hate the grittiness of dry shampoo too!
Mix and Match Mama says
That was always my holdup too!!!
Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog says
Thank you for the reviews! I wash my hair every two days so this is really helpful! ❤️✨

Katelyn says
I appreciate this video! I couldn’t understand the foam piece of the Ouai but I now need to try it because I hate the feel of dry shampoo in my hair. I am obsessed with the Ouai wave spray, AMAZING! I could only imagine how good this dry shampoo foam will be!
Mix and Match Mama says
I hate that feeling too!!!
Sage says
This might be a dumb question, but do you use dry shampoo after an intense work out? I feel like it might be gross to spray onto my sweaty hair/scalp and expect it to feel clean. I live in FL and run outdoors every morning, so there’s a lot of sweat happening. Would dry shampoo work?
Mix and Match Mama says
I would have said absolutely not because for me personally, if I had a really sweaty workout, I would have to wash my hair. That being said, the mousse one I would use because since it does get your hair “wet” it feels really clean after (and not just masking oils).
Joanne says
Hi there! Piggybacking on this comment to say that I use the IGK dry shampoo before a workout. I spritz it in my hair in the spots where I know I sweat a lot (temples, crown, etc) and it absorbs a lot of the sweat too. Makes it easy to blow dry any sweat after my workout and extend my hair another day. I live in TX and sweat the most from my head so it definitely helps!
KimW says
Oh man – I was excited about this post until I saw the price of your picks. Would love to see a review of more reasonably priced dry shampoos! $28 for a single bottle of dry shampoo is just not in most of our wheelhouses.
Amie says
I have been using TRESemmé Dry Shampoo (black and yellow can) and love it!! Should only be around $6 or so.
Tracy says
Check out Batiste brand. Great dry shampoo at a good price point.
Alexandra C says
I’m a dry shampoo savant, and while I do like the Dry Bar Triple Sec and the IGK one she mentioned, I’m forever grabbing samples of dry shampoo in the Ulta check out line. Not Your Mother’s Dry Shampoo in the BLUE can is far and away my favorite low price point dry shampoo. I don’t like the green or purple Not Your Mother’s because the scent is not great, but the blue (Beach Babe) smells like coconut.
Chrissy says
Try TRESemme Dry Shampoo-you can get at the grocery/drugstore and under $5. I’m personally a fan of Living Proof’s but that runs in the $20s. I forgot to pack in on vacation and bought the TRESemme one, and wow! I was impressed! 🙂
Brooke says
Batiste! I think the cherry smell is the most pleasant because it isn’t very strong like the other batiste scents.
Shanna says
I’ve also been told that the Dove one works wonders. That’s the one I’m picking up next. I like Batiste, just want to switch it up some. I tried the green Not Your Mother’s, but felt it made my hair oilier.
JUDY says
Those are the three that I use too. They are the best. Depending on what day I am at usually determines which one I use. I workout daily and do the peloton daily and these have been a lifesaver. I can shampoo twice a week instead of daily.
Mix and Match Mama says
No way?! I love that we both love the same ones!!
CampDallas says
I keep wondering why I didn’t use dry shampoo when my kids were babies?!!! It’s so great!!!! I swear by Living Proof…have you tried it?!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I am now wondering that too! I haven’t tried Living Proof’s!
Dana says
So, I really don’t understand why people don’t like to wash their hair? I have tried not washing it daily so many times and hate how it doesn’t smell fresh and feels yuck. I think it’s so funny how many times I’ve tried it, trying to convince myself that it’s better to wash less often. 🙂 That Ouai product makes me want to try one last time, but I’m not so sure. Maybe one day! You make it look really neat though.
Mix and Match Mama says
That was me too, Dana!!! But now,I have nowhere to go and this dry shampoo is rockin’ my world!!!
Candas says
I love the living proof one as well! I’ve been eyeing the Drybar but I’m am scared of change haha. I think I’ll give the mousse a try though, your video was very convincing!
I’m another who can’t stand the gritty feeling, so if I use dry shampoo, I wear my hair up that day. I’m interested to see if that one makes it feel good enough I don’t have to.
Also, the trick about putting it in the night before – pure gold. It definitely helps and I’ve found that if I do it it right, I can sometimes get a THIRD day out of it (if I haven’t worked out really hard and feel like it’s just gross.)
Susy says
Absolutely agree! It’s so relaxing to let the water run down your neck! And get the squeaky clean.
Sally Reyna says
I haven’t tried any of these…but I did come across a good tip recently. I read to put the dry shampoo in before bed so it soaks up the oil while you sleep!!
I think it does make a difference!!! ?
Mix and Match Mama says
That’s a fantastic tip!!
Meghan Yanicko says
I do this when I’m trying to go a day or two between washes and it makes a huge difference for me! I spray a little Batiste before bed and then again in the AM… will have to try the ones you mentioned!
Jen says
It is so interesting to me how different products work so differently for everyone! We finally got a Dry Bar in my town and after I tried them for the first time and loved the smell of their products, I bought their dry shampoo. But I hate how it makes my hair feel (I have super fine blonde hair, though, so it doesn’t take much for my hair to feel like it has build up)! LOL I typically pick up the Dove brand at Target because it works fine, smells good, and is only around $5, but after seeing Living Proof from someone on Instagram, it is now on my list to try!
Debbra Weber says
I have been using the Dove (Coconut Scent) too. I really like it and I have tried A LOT of dry shampoos! I have the Quai dry foam mousse in my Sephora cart now and will definitely give the Living Proof a try at some point.
Jennifer says
I just bought the Dove one, too. It does smell nice. But I’m not sure what I think of dry shampoo yet.
Melanie says
Innersense Organic Beauty has a great mousse dry shampoo! It is the only dry shampoo I’ve ever liked. It made my roots feel super clean and gave me some volume.
Lauren K says
Well this is going in my cart right now! I’m so glad you posted the video demo because I would have definitely been scared to do that to my hair if I was pressed for time. I love the Ouai products that I’ve used so far (like the wave spray) and will be trying this one too! The smell is so wonderful on their products
Mix and Match Mama says
I knew it needed a visual! It’s crazy and the first time, you’ll probably think it’s all wrong, but I promise you, it works!!
Catherine says
I absolutely LOVE Klorane dry shampoo! I hated them all before trying this one as I didn’t like the sticky/tacky feeling and I really didn’t want ANY scent. Klorane leaves your hair feeling fresh and clean with no scent. The best!! Having said that, I am in Australia so not sure if you have that brand though. It is French so you probably do. Would love you to try it too!
Courtney says
Detox Dry Shampoo by Dry Bar is my favorite. I love both the original scent and coconut colada (it smells like summer). I was never a dry shampoo fan until this year. I love it! You should definitely try it out. I got mine at Ulta but I’m sure you can find it other places.
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you so much!!!
Sara Husser says
Living Proof has long been a recommended one. I have tried many and it’s the only one that has worked for me. But I am really intrigued by your three! I’d love to hear how it compares to the Living Proof one!
Sharon says
Yes!!! I absolutely ADORE my Living Proof dry shampoo, but now I may try one of these out to compare. Would love some travel sized ones.
Allison says
Dang!! That #3 foam dry shampoo’s number one ingredient is diatomaceous earth lol!! That’s what we buy at Home Depot to kill roly polys ha! That is crazy. But thanks for the review, I am in need of some new ones to try! Will try 2 and 3!
Shannon says
Now I totally want to try that dry shampoo mousse!! I am not a dry shampoo person, either, but it looks really good!
Two requests for future posts:
1. Favorite drugstore products
2. Wedding rings story — and this would be fun to include some of your blogger friends on (like Erica, Andrea, Narci)
Thanks, Shay!
Annaliza says
Not a dry shampoo but have you tried olaplex? Thankfully I have great genes and don’t have to dye my hair, yet. But when I did in the past my hair would always break no matter how much I took care of it, so I avoided coloring my hair. Until Olaplex! I use the 3, 4, and 5 (hair mask, shampoo & conditioner). 1 & 2 are used at the salon when they color your hair. My hair isn’t breaking at all from my highlights. You should check it out.
Mix and Match Mama says
I have!! I’ve tried many of their products. The hair oil is AMAZING!!!
Michelle O says
Cornstarch Baby Powder will work in a pinch. It’s not gritty and doesn’t flake. It may go on white, but give it a couple minutes and when it soaks up the oils, the whiteness goes away. Great to use if you run out of dry shampoo or mousse.
Mix and Match Mama says
Well isn’t that brilliant!
Alexis Meacham says
I tried YGK after seeing it on your blog and the smell – it is soooooo good! BUT – I felt like I couldn’t run my fingers through my hair because of the build up 🙁 So I had to go back to my trusty favorite – Amika! It is sooooo good! No buildup at all! Also, the best tip I learned was to do the dry shampoo at night and then when you wake up, your hair looks like you washed it! @jasmineraehairco is the dry shampoo goddess on Instagram! Ha! I used to wash mine every day, but now I was twice a week just by following her method and “training my hair.”
landyn says
I’ve been training my hair too!
Clare Butler says
I love the IGK dry shampoo. Every once and a while I’ll try a new one but I always end up going back. It’s great for my dark hair and I LOVE the smell!!!
CAROLYN BECKER says
Bumble AMD bumble-great products including the dry shampoo. Great reviews and doesnt leave that white residue.
Jennifer says
Hey !! I’m curious what you do after a workout. My hair is usually soaked after a workout. Do you use the dry foam then too???
Mix and Match Mama says
I don’t think I’m much of a sweater. I’m usually not soaked after any workout. If I feel particularly yucky after one, I’d shampoo my hair.
Landyn says
Hi Shay! I’d love to know if you do anything special after swimming? I hate how the chlorine dries out my hair, but if I washed my hair every time I got in the pool it would be everyday! Any tips to moisturize between washes? Thanks!
Mix and Match Mama says
Not after but before I almost always put a conditioner in my hair (any one will work…I use something convenient that smells nice). With the conditioner in before I swim, my hair seems to do better after.
Lana says
I always hate that about dry shampoo, too! Have you ever tried Living Proof’s? You spray it on the roots, wait 30 sec, and then rub it in, and my hair feels clean, it doesn’t have that oily look to it anymore, and it has volume and body! If you want another one to try, that’s worth it! Now I’m off to hunt down this mousse to try… 🙂
Amy A says
I love Living Proof Dy Shampoo. For you ladies with fine hair, try their Volume Blast. Amazing!
Debbra Weber says
Thank you for the post! I have tried soooo many dry shampoos. I’m going to give the Quai dry foam shampoo a try. It’s in my Sephora cart. Have a great Tuesday!! : ))
Carrinton Hunt says
You need to try Living Proof! I used the Bumble and Bumble pret-a-powder for about a year and I just picked up Living Proof’s and nothing compares!!
Laura says
I almost never comment, but as a hairstylist, I can tell you that dry shampoo works best when it’s used on freshly dried/styled hair. I know that seems counterintuitive, but it will start soaking up the oil as your scalp produces it and it will keep your style fresher for longer!
Serena says
I use #2 as well and really like it, it’s definitely worth the investment. I also really like Oribe dry shampoo and Living Proof.
I’m a brunette and prefer the First Class over the Living Proof only because it does leave a bit of white residue in my hair whereas First Class does not. But, other than that LP works and smells great!
Not a dry shampoo but have you tried Living Proof Dry Volume Blast? This is hands down my favorite hair product! I have fine hair and will take all the volume I can get and this does the trick! I will spray some in my hair at night before bed and by morning BOOM! I also use it in the morning, but sleeping in it really is just magic!
Janea says
Hi from Prosper, TX! You have to try the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo. It smells great and my hair feels great! I alternate between this and the Dry Bar Dry Shampoo.
Elspeth says
Still haven’t gotten on board yet with dry shampoo but you may have just convinced me! Congrats on the new offices for Mix and Match Travel Agency.

Thank you so much!!!
Arika says
Aveda makes a dry shampoo that I love. It’s a powder, which I know many people don’t like, but I have found it’s great when my hair is really, really oily. It just sucks it all up. I like to put it on before bed and let it work its magic. Plus, the whole Aveda line smells amazing, so that’s always a plus. I also bought the charcoal stuff based on your rec a while back and love that one too. Thanks!
Amanda says
Have you tried the Ouai leave in conditioner? It’s by far my favorite!
Mix and Match Mama says
I haven’t!
Leslie S says
Yeah I’ve always wanted to do the dry shampoo but it never works as well as just washing my hair! So I just wash it ? Plus my hair dresser told me you need a clarifying shampoo and a scalp scrub to combat dry shampoo residue. Nah. I guess I’d rather just wash it!!
Mix and Match Mama says
Apple Cider Vinegar is great to use instead of a clarifying shampoo too!
Whitney says
I actually really like the drybar as well but I picked up the Batiste after reading positive reviews and I love it! A cheaper alternative 🙂
Darcy says
I always laughed when people said it’s all about training your hair but it seriously is. I never really used it regularly either until all this craziness in the world and now I go up to 4 days! I’m going to try your #2 & #3. Kenra makes a mousse also and I was leery the first time but I agree it’s AMAZING!!
Rheanna says
I’ve come to love dry shampoo over the past few years too! ..and struggled to find my favorite. I’d say that I ended up loving Klorane the best, but a few things made me start my search again: 1) the price tag to keep buying bottles of dry shampoo that seem to go so quickly! 2) the environmental impact of all my dry shampoo bottles.. but most of all 3) I DID NOT LIKE the idea that one of the major ingredients in the top brands are propane or butane. I just.. that seems not great. Also, I imagine my propane/butaned-dry shampooed hair going up in flames if I got too close to the grill. SO. I started looking again at more natural options. Right now I’ve settled on Acure Organics Dry Shampoo, which comes in a shaker bottle with powder. It’s got cornstarch, kaolin clay, arrowroot powder, and baking soda, plus a nice rosemary peppermint fragrance. It took me a few tries to get used to the shaker bottle, but it’s really so easy to use. I’ve been happy with it, and I’m happy not to be breathing in the cloud of dry shampoo chemicals too, which I’m sure isn’t great. It would set off my Dyson Air Purifier every time. :-/ The Acure Organics dry shampoo is on Amazon and a great price! Just $7.64! Long live dry shampoo!

Am I the only one? Few things relax me/make me feel better than washing my hair in the shower!
Alison T. says
Like you, I never understood the dry shampoo thing. It just made more sense for me to actually wash my hair. But, the older I get the drier my hair feels. So, I started trying brands to avoid washing daily. Living Proof is my top pick! The cult following is well-deserved. It’s not gritty, doesn’t feel heavy, and has a clean, fresh scent. I feel like it’s actually doing something rather than just masking. I’m kind of excited to try the Ouai foam after watching your video. It seems weird, but neat. Lol
Sheila says
Are you still going to blog about your cruise in Hawaii right before the quarantine? I’ve always wanted to cruise in Hawaii and am dreaming of a vacation!
Mix and Match Mama says
I will be blogging about that!

My go to’s are Living Proof and Amika which smells amazing . I’m putting the foam one in my cart right now. I guess it’s the Pandemic but I’m giddy with excitement about trying it. Lol

I’ve never been a dry shampoo girl either, but maybe I need to give it another try!

Batiste foam dry shampoo is amazing and under $10. I swear by it and it smells Amazing!

I haven’t given dry shampoo much of a chance……but I would like to know the specifics of your bathroom wallpaper! I’m on the search for something to use in my dining room:)
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwww! I wish I had all of the details. It’s been up so long, I don’t think I have any info. It’s fun though, right 😉 !
Erin says
Sherwin Williams has a great selection of wallpaper, tons of options in their catalogs, one of which is Magnolia. We have wallpaper in our guest bathroom similar to Shays in color and design which was from Sherwin Williams. Lots of our clients purchase from there too. Just happened to read your comment:)

I was like you on the dry shampoo, but since this quarantine, I’ve discovered Living Proof and I love it. I also love Triple Sec and never thought to use it as a dry shampoo! (The blanc smell is my absolute favorite too.) Now you have me interested in trying the mousse one. Thanks for the reviews!
Liz Thorson says
Love this post and ALL of the opinions! I’m game for tying some new dry shampoos! Thanks, Shay!

This made me laugh out loud when you said “that could concern you!!!” in the video – if I bought dry shampoo and it went on like that it would totally freak me out. Just cracked me up for some reason – thanks for sharing!
