Happy Tuesday, friends!
Guys, we go back to school on Thursday!
Whaaaaaaaaaat?!
I’m not ready.
We’re starting the year virtually from home…but I’m just not ready to say goodbye to the laziness of summer. Throw in the fact that we’re supposed to start some MAJOR work downstairs to repair the flood that is supposed to be VERY LOUD and VERY MESSY and the Type-A girl you all know and love might go a tad nuts. You know how sometimes you cry over something and really, it’s not about that at all…but you just hit your breaking point and cry over something silly instead of the actual serious problem?
Last week, I cried over pumpkins.
I feel like I don’t even need to explain this to you…because you know me so well.
I am a planner. I am an organized and prepared person. I don’t like this position I’m in where I’m having to make decisions about things I wasn’t prepared to make decisions about. I don’t like mess. I don’t like clutter. I don’t like noise. I like peace. I like cleanliness. I like calm. I like the zen little state my home is 99.9% of the time in. I don’t like having so many people in my space when I’m trying to think. I don’t like dust/dirt/debris. I was just in a bad mood about the situation (I try to stay upbeat, but even I can get down from time to time) and my breaking point was when I realized my fall decorations weren’t coming out this year.
And you know how much I love my fall decorations.
It’s super stupid and silly to cry over that…but I did. And now, I’m telling you in case you cried over something stupid last week instead of the “real” issue too.
Sigh.
Anyway, school starts Thursday.
Today though, we’re going to talk about THE MOST ASKED QUESTION FROM THIS PAST WEEK.
My hair.
Bahahaha!
SWEATER//JEANS//BOOTIES//JACKET
Oh my goodness, you ladies have been cracking me up this last week about my hair!!!
I noticed that my friend Amy’s hair was looking SO GOOD the other day, and she said all it was was her A Wave We Go waver.
Um, what?
I’ve never heard of that.
I looked it up on Amazon and it was at my house the very next day.
I’ve used it several times over the last 10ish days or so and according to your DMs and blog comments, you’re a fan! You also want to see me actually use it, so I made a video!!
You can watch my little tutorial below…
I hope the video helps! I know it helps me to actually see people use tools and products.
In the video, I use VERB GHOST OIL, A WET BRUSH, ORIBE TEXTURE SPRAY and am wearing THIS TARGET DRESS.
My main tips for using this A Wave We Go is to make sure you pull out the knob on the end all the way to make the crimps the loosest, reverse the way you use the tool with each strand (so that they’re not uniformed) and leave out the ends of your hair. I set the temperature around 375 degrees. I explain and demonstrate all of these tips in the video!
I have tried it on Kensington’s hair too…
…and she loved it 🙂 . Side note: on Sunday afternoon, she got a trim. I didn’t realize how much she needed one until I saw this pic! Ha!
All good vibes with my new a wave we go 🙂 . It’s fun to try new products…especially ones that make getting ready even easier!!!
If there are other products you want me to check out and/or try, please let me know!
Okay, I’m off to enjoy my last non school night of summer!! xo

Oh my gosh Shay this is crazy– I was JUST talking to my sister about how we used to use one of these in high school and I wanted to try it again… But then I tried it and I didn’t do it right– it looked horrible!!! So happy you did a tutorial! Going to try it again today ?

I cry about things instead of the “ real” thing ALL. The .Time ! I once cried because Wendy’s was out of baked potatoes …. ?
Mix and Match Mama says
Well, they do have really good potatoes. 😉 Thank YOU for sharing this with me!!! xoxo
Kathy says
I’ll have to show my daughter your video. I think she’d like that waver.
I was trying to think about your fall decoration dilemma. That is my favorite thing, too.
Is there one room you could decorate or maybe a screened in back porch? I’d really like to see you able to do at least some of your decorating. And maybe, they will make a lot of progress this month and you will be able to decorate after all! I will probably be thinking of solutions all day because I’m already looking forward to dragging my bins upstairs in mid September. lol
Mix and Match Mama says
I think I’m going to pull stuff down and get creative. I just can’t not do it. My heart would be happier if I did it…even in random/small ways.
kathy says
I will pray for divine creativity:) God cares about your love of pumpkins.

We currently are in the process of buying and selling a house. Having to leave abruptly with four littles. Then come home to just leave again. Here I’m VA nothing is fully open so no where to go to stall time. No family around either and haven’t found our tribe since moving here. One contract fell through. So had to start all over again with our house. And still haven’t found a house. And I’m 15 weeks pregnant. I’m like you and have tried so hard to stay upbeat. But I cried over cereal the other day. Sigh. Just know you aren’t alone. Praying for you and your precious family.
Mix and Match Mama says
Oh Brea, I’m so sorry for you!!! YES! Not having anywhere to go, even if just during the day for a bit, complicates everything. It’s so loud at my house, and my favorite place to work, Starbucks, isn’t an option…and how will my four kids do zoom calls with all of that noise??? So many things are harder simply because we can’t just “go”. I’m going to PRAY for YOU right now!
Laura Toler says
Brea I live in Southside Virginia. Hope you will soon find Southern charm and friendliness. When my children were young, we met friends through our children, church, daycare, and school. So sorry the virus is negatively impacting your move. Hope things will soon better for you and your family.
Elspeth says
I have reached that breaking point too and it’s not fun! Hang in there Shay! We are all rooting for you! This too shull pass…enjoy the last few days with your kiddos!

So so cute!
I think I need this wave curler!!
Amazon makes shopping too easy!! ?
Ashlan says
Great video Shay! I used one of these almost 20 years ago in high school, love how everything is coming back! The Oribe brand is amazing. It’s pronounced OR-BAY 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you 😉 !! It’s one of those things you think you know until you have to say it! Ha!
Manda Stegall says
Love it!! Thanks for the tutorial!
Amy Owens says
Love your hair! And girl, on September 1st, you pull out your decor and decorate that kitchen like crazy. Do your kitchen and bedrooms…it will make you happy to see fall all around in the rooms where you spend your most time! Sometimes we all need a good cry!
ALisha says
Your makeup is on POINT today! So cute!
Mix and Match Mama says
Awww! Thank you!
Amie says
Yes I totally get this!! After our flood in September last year we kept being told ‘oh you will be in before Christmas’ and guess what? That did not happen. This was our first Christmas in our new (to us) home and we couldn’t even put up a tree or decorations, it made me so sad. BUT we made do and I am just praying this year we get have our tree 🙂 I say you should still put up a few fall things in the spaces you are living in to make you happy. You could fix up the outside somewhere some too!
Katelyn Magerko says
I would cry too if my pumpkins could not come out. I feel for you. It’s one of my favorite things and knowing you can’t put them out is super disappointing. Hang in there!
Kristen says
You should try Playa Endless Summer Spray to give your waves some definition… it’s an awesome sea salt spray that doesn’t leave hair dry or crunchy. Just spray on finished waves and scrunch a bit, then dries quickly!
Mix and Match Mama says
Looking that up now!!!
Kim C says
I hope the house being in disassembled right now doesn’t defeat you and your holiday cheer. Even if you have to resort to fall window clings, do something!! As much as you love fall, even a tiny bit should make you feel better. And I’m sure I’m not the only that would like to see your creativeness and how you decorated around the construction =] Happy Tuesday!
Jen says
I have a question unrelated to the hair waver but closely related to your virtual learning situation. I’m in coastal NJ and have decided to do virtual learning 5 days a week for my kindergartener (we were given a choice between that and 5 full days a week in classroom). My question: what laptop/computer do/are you using for your kiddos? My MacBook is super old (got it freshman year of college and now I’m 35). It hasn’t been used in years and I obviously need something reliable. What would you recommend? I’m leaning toward another mac
Mix and Match Mama says
Our district is providing macbooks for every single student this year, so that’s what they’re all using. I love my Macbook too! I have the 13″ Air and love it!
Romi says
I have a possible solution to the construction noise. Amazon sells noise reduction ear plugs for construction sites. DUBS is the brand we used during our house remodel. They are Excellent for construction site noise reduction. You can still hear clearly and talk but it softens the loud noises. Rustig makes a foam earplug for construction and home repair noise reduction but I haven’t tried them. I know DUBS work for sure. Getdubscom is the site to see if they sound like the right fit for you. My son was in a band and that is how we found out about them. He had us all wearing them for his shows so we didn’t go deaf. Not sponsored or affiliated in any way, just passing along helpful info. Our house was also under construction through the entire holiday season. What started as a 3 month project turned into 8 months. I was bummed about not decorating. We had one white plastic pumpkin the construction crew would move somewhere funny each day when they left. It kept me going and made for a few laughs. We still hosted 29 people for Thanksgiving in the mess (nobody wanted to miss the tradition) and it was surprisingly great. Christmas was celebrated with a tiny fake tree. I was so happy to decorate the following year in my “new” home! This too shall pass and you will be so happy when it’s all over.
Mix and Match Mama says
Awwwwww! Romi, thank YOU!!!!!!
Kim says
Would you say that this is faster and easier than curling your hair with the wand, or is it just a different look? I am tempted to try it, but I am not very talented with the hair tools I have, so not sure if it is worth investing in another one or not.
As far as the fall decorations go, hopefully you will find a way to display at least a few (even if that wasn’t really what you were crying about, it still matters). One year we were in temporary housing for the fall and winter holidays, and although it was disappointing not to have all of our decorations out, I bought a couple of new things just for that temporary space, and every year when I pull those decorations out of our bins I remember that short time in our lives, and how much just those couple of decorations cheered me up when I didn’t have access to all of my other ones in storage.
Mix and Match Mama says
I think it’s faster! I have sent back more tools because I couldn’t figure them out, but this one was so simple! I really think it would be hard to mess this one up!
Jess Ackermann says
Love the white peplum tank you are wearing! I don’t see a link- do you mind sharing?
Mix and Match Mama says
It’s J Crew!!
Lara Fisher says
Hi Shay! Out of all your years of blogging, have you ever done a “behind the scenes post” where you give an inside look to how you plan out your blog posts and any other inner workings that go into running your blog every day? I would love to see that!
Mix and Match Mama says
I haven’t done that, but I could! Writing it down!!
Cara Payan says
Shay I hope and pray you can find ways to make your pumpkin heart happy. You’re love of fall is one of the things that kept me coming back to your blog when I first found you. You’re holiday excitement helped me embrace it in our own home and we celebrate all of them with enthusiasm, fall and Christmas are our favorites of course. Maybe you can have your followers send you photos of their pumpkins and you can enjoy their fall decor while you await the construction to finish. Sending you love & prayers.
Can you share your bracelets you wear next to your apple watch? I noticed they dandle a bit and they look super cute. Thank you!
Mix and Match Mama says
Thank you, Cara!!! I love these ideas!!! Okay, those are both Kendra Scott 🙂 .
Amy Stone says
I know you have linked it before but I can’t find it. Where is that adorable white top from in the first picture you posted today? I’m PP and I think it would be such a nice top right now!!
Mix and Match Mama says
J Crew!
Victoria Szczechowski says
I wear my hair wavy like this pretty much every day in the summer, but my key to getting the style is showering and sleeping in a damp french braid. Works just as well and no heat damage! Loving your wavy look, Shay.
Star says
I was in a rural bar/restaurant the other day for lunch. Lee Greenwood’s “I Am Proud to be an American” started playing over the speaker system. Talk about fighting back tears! I think all the issues in the United States hit me all at once. Luckily I regained my composure and avoided the ugly cry.
Jenna says
I really hope you can still find a way to enjoy some fall decorations this year! And thank you for the hair tutorial! I’ve been so curious about that tool and whether it would work well for my hair. It looks like a quick way to style it for something different!
Stewart says
So I bought this and I really do think I am going to love it but my hair is coming out a little “crimpy” (if that makes sense?), any suggestions???
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes! Make sure you pulled the knob at the very end all the way out (I believe that’s clockwise) and then make sure you’re reversing the way you do it (per the video) to make things not uniformed.
Dawn says
Sorry so do you turn the top knob clockwise or counterclockwise. Thank you!! Love all you do ?
Mix and Match Mama says
I’m thinking about it here at my desk, but turning it clockwise should make it pull out further and then turning it counterclockwise should make it go back in. I have it pulled all the way out as far as it goes.
Amanda says
Just got my wave and go waver! In fact I had amazon overnight it ? It’s so much fun! So much faster than wanding my hair and stayed in much longer! Thank you so much for the recommendation ?
Mix and Match Mama says
YAY!!!!!!!!!
Kelly S. says
Totally off topic, but I love the rug that is in the background on your mirror pictures! I’ve been on the hunt for a new rug, so wondering where you got it?
Mix and Match Mama says
