Happy Wednesday, friends!
It’s the March edition of Let’s Look!
If you don’t know what this is, once a month, Erika and I do a little link up where we “look” at different aspects of our lives (and then if you blog, you share and link up too!). We have been doing this little linky party for years now, and it’s always one of my favorite posts each month because most of the topics are YOUR suggestions!
In January, we looked at HOW WE ORGANIZE FOR THE NEW YEAR.
In February, we looked at WHAT WE EAT IN A WEEK.
And today, we’re looking at…OUR FAVES FROM HIGH SCHOOL & COLLEGE.
What does that mean?
Welllllll…when we put out there what you wanted to see on Let’s Look this year, many of you wanted to know what our favorite things from high school and college were, so we’ve looked way back to the ’90s and have some faves for you!
Hello, Shay circa 1999 🙂 .
One of my faves? Dancing! I danced from 3 until I graduated at 18 and was the First Lieutenant of our school’s very large drill team my junior and senior year. I did everything from tap to ballet, lyrical, modern, hip hop, jazz…I did it all. I was busy with other activities (student counsel, NHS, church youth group and more), but when I think back to high school, dancing always comes to mind first.
Want to know another fave from high school and college? These two…
…Ethan and Ellie 🙂 . They were my favorite fave. I babysat and was a nanny for several families off and on, but I was continuously a nanny for Ethan and Ellie (both adopted…which I LOVE!). I started taking care of Ethan when he as six months old and then Ellie came along 2 years later and by the time I was 22, I claimed them both as my own (and their parents too!).
I traveled with their family, I got to know all of their extended family, a big part of why I made the decision to go to college where I did was based on my proximity to them…they were a HUGE part of my life.
Today, these two are 23 and 25…what the heck?! I still love them both 😉 .
So, those were a couple of big things, but here are the fun/random small things…
What was my favorite:
Drink: A large Sonic Diet Dr. Pepper with vanilla
Fast Food: Sonic’s breakfast burritos. Random…but true. I used to eat those or their grilled chicken wraps all the time.
Starbucks order: Skinny Vanilla Latte
Place to shop for clothes: American Eagle
Band: Aerosmith
Subject: French
Thing to do on a Friday night: Dinner and a movie (I used to love going to the movie theater)
Shoes: Dr. Martens
Author: John Grisham
Magazine: Self
Perfume: CK One
Skincare: The three part set of Clinque (soap, toner and moisturizer)
Color Nail Polish: Revlon Vixen
TV Show: Friends
Movie: Legends of the Fall
John Huges Movie: 16 Candles
Restaurant: I loved me some Cheesecake Factory
Pet: My cat named Chloe
Style Icon: It went from Alicia Silverstone in Clueless (high school) to Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde
Other random things I loved back in high school and college…I loved me a VHI or MTV video countdown. I could get sucked right into those in seconds! I could also get sucked into TLC’s A Baby Story or A Wedding Story. Do you remember those?! I would accidentally “binge” those way back in the day.
What else?! If you have any other “what was your favorite” from high school and college questions, ask in the comment section, and I’ll answer!
Awwwww…the good ole days 😉 .
Coming up this year on Let’s Look…
…next month, we will be posting our date night ideas 🙂 .
If you blogged with us today, make sure you link up below!

Such a fun look back at happy times! Your daughter looks just like you at this age! I am a few years older than you and very thankful that we didn’t have social media then. We just enjoyed people and had fun. And I miss the movie theater too! Life was so much more simple(:
Mix and Match Mama says

Oh goodness…A Wedding Story and A Baby Story. The girls in my [small Christian college] dorm used to watch that every afternoon.

We are the same age so reading this was a walk down memory lane for me! My sorority little sister and I used to binge Wedding and Baby Story as well and I nannied for two little boys all through college as well. Loved them to pieces and they will always hold a special place in my heart even though they’re young 20s now. Bless it

I remember Ck One. My thing I loved in high school were my combat boots that my dad got me from an army surplus store. Good thing I played sports to walk in those things all the time. I loved my parents always allowed my friends to come over and hang out. We were all just happy watching movies and laughing together.
After graduation…country line dancing was hitting it big. I spent a lot of time dancing at a local place and it was so much fun. Live bands and dancing!!
Mainly, i found my true ove in college and have been with him since!!!

Legends of the Fall- still my fave movie of all time. And A BABY STORY- I forgot all about that show. I used to watch it constantly.

These are so fun!!! Did you wear a lot of brown? I was so into brown instead of black and now I wonder where all the chocolate brown clothing went? ? I think it’s so funny that babies wear all these neutral colors (including brown!) now, too. It’s so weird how trends make things seem normal and then we look back like, “What in the world was I thinking?!”
Mix and Match Mama says
OH my gosh! YES!!!!! I wore a ton of brown!!! That is so funny and so true!
Margaret says
I jut have to say AEROSMITH!! Love the Boys from Boston to this day (though I’ve seen them in concert and Steven Tyler has a foul mouth)
Carly says
Question on college favs. With your family history growing up with travel and adventure, why select a local college a few miles from your home instead of all the endless options in other states? If it had to be in Texas why not at least pick another region of the state so you could experience something new and different? We had a hard non negotiable rule in our home, we had to go to college in another state. It was an opportunity to see and experience life all on your own and expose yourself to new adventures and people, food, etc. That experience for all us quickly became the favorite and best thing we ever did for college.
Mix and Match Mama says
A boy. I did it for a boy. Where were you in 2000 to slap some sense into me?!
Ellie says
Where did you think/hope you’d be when you were 40 when you were 14!?
Mix and Match Mama says
A stay at home mom living in Irving, TX. 🙂
Margaret says
I just have to say AEROSMITH! Though Steven Tyler has a foul mouth in concert =(
Mix and Match Mama says
I’ve seen him in concert several times…and there is just something about that dirty old man that I love. Ha!
EW says
Yes to Legends of the Fall! Loved your list!
Mix and Match Mama says
Tristan. Aidan. Samuel. Yes.
Sandy says
What about yourt college days? Where did you go, Live in a dorm or apartment, room mates, any activities during college, when did you graduate?
Mix and Match Mama says
I was BORING in college. I went to the University of North Texas and lived in the dorm my first year. My second and third years, I lived at home (I graduated in 3.5 years). I always worked two jobs and never did anything fun. Ever. I went to school, worked and had a boyfriend (who wasn’t Andrew). I was so lame. I met Andrew (when I was finally single again) and he introduced me to SO MUCH FUN (living vicariously through him at Kansas State). If I had to do it over again, I would have done the entire thing from start to finish different.
KK says
Shay, this is an awesome post! Did you watch TGIF growing up – Family Matters, Full House, Perfect Strangers, Step by Step, etc. – on Friday nights? What was your favorite Friday night activity (if it wasn’t like me – TGIF with friends and pizza -ha!)?
Mix and Match Mama says
Yes!!!! I did all the time!! When I was younger, dinner and a Blockbuster video trip was my favorite way to spend a Friday night. When I got older, hanging out with my friends or going to the movie theater was my fave.
Malorie F says
My next door neighbors growing up, the kids I always babysat and nannied for were also an Ethan and Ellie, both adopted from Bulgaria! These two defined a lot of my youth and this year we’re attending their weddings! Loved these flashbacks.
Jenny N says
I forgot about TLC A Baby Story! I used to watch that all the time.
Joanne says
I used to love both A Wedding Story and A Baby story! So many of these things I honestly wouldn’t be able to think of my favorites… but I KNOW I never got to eat at a Cheesecake Factory until college because it was a spring break trip to Vegas with my husband’s family that I was introduced to them. That chain did not make it’s way here to the East coast for a verrry long time after that. Like I had kids before I heard of one that was an hour drive away.
Coreline says
I loved this .. you need a cat again 🙂
Mix and Match Mama says
Kensington is allergic or we would! I love cats!!!!!
Jessica Foster Lee says
You had me at the 3-step Clinique skin care regime. Do you remember the sleek plastic container the soap was in? I WOULD BE LYING IF I SAID I DIDN’T HAVE CK ONE ON MY VANITY RIGHT NEXT TO THE ELIZABETH ARDEN SUNFLOWER,. THANKS FOR TAKING ME BACK
Mix and Match Mama says
YES! YES! YES! You could slide the bar of soap right inside. My friend Amy introduced me to it when we were like 14 and I saved and saved to buy it. I probably used those same three products for almost 10 years!
Natalie Lyles says

Laci Murray says
